The Wild 100: Cabin life

Cabin life is a beautiful, smoky, wood-scented change of pace, so it's not like you need a lot of help to slow down and connect with nature. But here are a few things to add an extra glow to the fireside warmth of your cabin life.

Cabin life is only one type of experience that features in The Wild 100, our selection of the incredible things that come with our stays. You can see the full 100 here, or sign up to our newsletter and have them sent to you in inspiring episodes over the next few weeks.

Lark, Yorkshire

51. Double baths

Cabins are places to unwind, which is often taken care of simply by their remote setting and simple design. At Lark though, they wanted to be sure you'd destress, so they created fabulous double baths covered by a roof so they're usable in any weather, but open to the elements enough to let you bathe in the wild peace.

The Woodcock, Norfolk

52. Completely off grid

This is old school cabin life. Not just an escape from the city to Norfolk's quiet countryside, but an escape from the modern world. With no electricity and no tech, you'll be guided by the daylight to evenings of quiet conversation and connection, with nothing in the way of quality time together.

Mount Freedom, Ayrshire

53. An outdoor fireplace

The cabins at Mount Freedom look over the sea to Arran and even Ireland on a clear day. Get yourself a smoky glass of Monkey Shoulder, made just down the road, then light the outdoor fireplace and sit back in your rocking chair, enjoying the peace, the view and the flames.

Falling Water, Yorkshire

54. Flow therapy

Cabin life is about going with the flow. Bright summer days? Lie back and enjoy the smell of warm wood and wildflower, and stare into the fire as it whips up towards the heavens. Frosty winter evenings? Throw logs on the fire, and surrender to hygge, smelling woodsmoke as you drift off cosy. The best flow of all? The river that runs past the house all year round.

Oaken Fort, Powys

55. Breakfast views

For the average house, a breakfast bar is a novelty, something you use in a dash, when you’re headed out the door pronto. But in a cabin? It’s a space dedicated to the art of breakfast. Take advantage of this incredible space, with a modern stylish kitchen – to cook up a work of art to break your fast, and enjoy it with a view you won’t soon forget.

Dragon Cruck, Powys

56. Design dreams

If you’re headed here, it might be for anything. The wild swimming, canoeing – Snowdonia just an hour away. Even if you went nowhere, you’d spend your time marvelling at the construction of this incredible space. But no matter what you do, where you go, or who you bring, you’ll end the day crafting pizzas in the outdoor kitchen.

Waney Cabin, Gloucestershire

57. Carving calm

Go method. Don't just spend a few days enjoying the rustic cabin life, but pick up the crafts and skills of a simpler time. The resident woodworker at Waney Cabin can help you go from stick to spoon in a few contemplative, rewarding hours. You'll come away with two souvenirs, a useful utensil and profound peace of mind.

The Black Hut, Northumberland

58. Cosying up

Beautiful cabin on the edge of a national park not cosy enough for you? What do you want, a mezzanine nook with a giant bean bag in it? Well, ok then, here you go. Look out on the Pennines and Hadrian's Wall, curl up and read in comfort, embrace the quiet of cabin life in one of its most natural settings, the wilderness of Northumberland.

Jake's Place, Devon

59. A life more idle

Jake's Place was practically made for lazy days. Stroll across the garden from the sauna to the deck, soak in the wood fired tub and stretch out on the sofa by the wood burner. All complimented by stunning views of the sea. If you must be active, the owners offer all sorts of classes and courses.
