Overview
You can book the whole Under Starry Skies site, just outside the northwest boundary of the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, with three cabins, Hafan, Derwen and Ty Mawr, all at your disposal. Hafan and Derwen, the sleeping cabins, are off grid, using 12-volt PV panel electric supply, enough to run the facilities and offer a few phone charging ports – which keeps them as perfect spots to wind down and focus on the important things. But if you’re in need of a little more power, you’ll find it in Ty Mawr, the communal space, with full plug sockets, as well as Wifi if you need to do a little hike research.
Chances are, you’ll forget about what needs plugging in where, and get lost in the analogue pleasures. There’s plenty of space for a group to… anything at Ty Mawr. There’s a large table for merry meals after long romps through the countryside, and a sitting area around the wood burner where you’ll relax and decompress (and someone will ‘just rest their eyes’). If you’ve brought kids to enjoy the half-size beds at Hafan and Derwen, then you might be as many as eight, and thankfully there’s bathrooms in each space, so you won’t have to wait long for one!

Meet your hosts
Meet Adam & Lou
Adam’s a sound engineer, exploring the world whilst touring with various artists and Lou has worked as a sculptural artist and arts educator, before their children were born and is looking forward to sculpting again soon! Lou is also a Tourism Ambassador for Carmarthenshire and both her and Adam both love suggesting places to visit!
"We left London in 2012 in search of a gentler way of life for our family, one closer to nature. We’ve both grown up with a love of the countryside and outdoors and would grab any opportunity to head off in a tent, or later our campervan, camping wild and exploring magical & beautiful places.”
They share an interest in eco design and have spent some time imagining the perfect small space in the woods. The cabins are their own design and they’ve enjoyed building them with help from a good friend.
Wildlife & Environment
Llwynbwch is 65 acres of unspoiled land, with native wildflowers and ferns as well as common spotted and butterfly orchids. There are several streams, a small river, as well as swimming holes. An old dairy farm, two thirds have been managed for conservation to promote varied flora and fauna with minimal grazing for the last 15 years. The owners are learning traditional skills including hedge laying and coppicing to sympathetically manage the land and to encourage biodiversity.
Red Kites, buzzards, owls, swallows, nuthatches, fallow deer, and bats are regular visitors. Otters and badgers also live on the land. When butterfly conservationists visited, they identified colonies of threatened Marsh Fritillary butterflies who feed on the blue flowering Devil’s Bit Scabious; and Brown Hairstreak butterflies whose habitat of uncut blackthorn is also threatened. Llwynbwch is just outside the Brecon Beacons National Park which was designated Wales’ first Dark Sky Reserve in 2013.
The cabins are heated by wood from the woodlands and in summer, water is heated by the sun. The cabins have been built from carefully chosen materials, including locally sourced larch and fir cladding. Hafan and Derwen are off grid with 12V solar system providing lighting and electricity. They have living roofs helping them to blend into their environment and keep them well insulated. Electricity for Ty Mawr is from Ecotricity; a provider which uses electricity from renewable sources.
