Overview
From the grass-roofed cabin’s earthy hiding spot to the great meadows wrapped around it, Hafan feels wild and secluded. The hills and the skies here never disappoint, especially in great company, and it’s always enchanting to spot a perfect constellation or a cloud of bats passing by!
A comfy double mezzanine bed and sofa combo, wood burning stove, solar lamps and USB charging points make for an easy fall from the grid. The sofa splits out into two half-size (120 x 95 cm) beds so a couple of little ones can join the sleepover too. There’s a guitar, a writing desk, a kettle and Welsh blankets for you to use as you please. Either way, the bunch of fresh flowers and coat hooks made from branches found in the woodlands will brighten anyone’s day! There’s a compost loo by the cabin but your main bathroom (with a hot shower and compost loo) is at Ty Mawr about 50 metres away, where you’ll also find a small honesty shop, fridge-freezer, WiFi and a swap library.
Sculpture artist Lou and Adam (usually jet setting across the planet with the melodic likes of Little Dragon and KT Tunstall!) have loads of insider tips; from where to buy the tastiest sandwiches to the best clifftops for dolphin spotting. On rainy days, they love their local 1920s cinema where curtains still go up and down and you can buy pots of ice-cream during the interval. A challenge before you leave: uncover Carmarthenshire’s spellbinding Arthurian legend by exploring its magical coasts and castles.

Meet Adam & Lou
Adam’s a sound engineer, exploring the world whilst touring with various artists and Lou has worked as a sculptural artist and arts educator, before their children were born and is looking forward to sculpting again soon! Lou is also a Tourism Ambassador for Carmarthenshire and both her and Adam both love suggesting places to visit!
"We left London in 2012 in search of a gentler way of life for our family, one closer to nature. We’ve both grown up with a love of the countryside and outdoors and would grab any opportunity to head off in a tent, or later our campervan, camping wild and exploring magical & beautiful places.”
They share an interest in eco design and have spent some time imagining the perfect small space in the woods. The cabins are their own design and they’ve enjoyed building them with help from a good friend.
Wildlife & Environment
Llwynbwch is 65 acres of unspoiled land, with native wildflowers and ferns as well as common spotted and butterfly orchids. There are several streams, a small river, as well as swimming holes. An old dairy farm, two thirds have been managed for conservation to promote varied flora and fauna with minimal grazing for the last 15 years. The owners are learning traditional skills including hedge laying and coppicing to sympathetically manage the land and to encourage biodiversity.
Red Kites, buzzards, owls, swallows, nuthatches, fallow deer, and bats are regular visitors. Otters and badgers also live on the land. When butterfly conservationists visited, they identified colonies of threatened Marsh Fritillary butterflies who feed on the blue flowering Devil’s Bit Scabious; and Brown Hairstreak butterflies whose habitat of uncut blackthorn is also threatened. Llwynbwch is just outside the Brecon Beacons National Park which was designated Wales’ first Dark Sky Reserve in 2013.
The cabins are heated by wood from the woodlands and in summer, water is heated by the sun. The cabins have been built from carefully chosen materials, including locally sourced larch and fir cladding. Hafan and Derwen are off grid with 12V solar system providing lighting and electricity. They have living roofs helping them to blend into their environment and keep them well insulated. Electricity for Ty Mawr is from Ecotricity; a provider which uses electricity from renewable sources.

Perfect retreat! We stayed here for two nights when we were in much need of some respite. Hafan delivered and then some! The cabin is cosy and located in a peaceful location. You will feel you have been cushioned by nature. The hosts were absolutely wonderful!

A magical place, so relaxing and everything cosy, stylish and well designed (and much of it handmade by Adam!). The site is a beautiful, peaceful get-away while being in close proximity to Llandeilo & Llandovery, only half an hour from Carmarthen and close to loads of walks & interesting sites. Footpaths close by meant days out walking without the car which we loved. We didn't want to leave after 4 nights & there's loads more to explore in this stunning area. Lou & Adam were the perfect hosts. Thank you both so much!

We had a wonderful stay at Hafan. The home was cosy and sweet and in such a nice quiet countryside location. The owners were lovely too. There was ample equipment provided to cook dinner at the house, and lighting the fire kept the house lovely and warm. Would definitely recommend for a peaceful weekend away, we didn't want to leave!
15/10/2022Lucy
A delightful place to switch off and getaway. The small space has thoughtful touches from the guitar to the welcome note on a blackboard for my arrival. Perfect good value and rustic space to getaway for a few days with a short walk for a local pint, a covered deck for a cup of tea with a view (even if it's raining), the bird hide style window for spotting local species and a simple firepit to while away the evening hours by watching the stars!
29/04/2022Helen
We stayed at Hafan for two nights, the cabin was amazing had everything we needed in there lovely and warm (too warm if your not carful with the logs) so peaceful and the name under Starry skyes is perfect the night sky there is amazing we sat out untill early hours just gazing at the sky. Waking up and having breakfast on the decking while listening to nothing but the birds and the trees blowing was the break we all needed.
22/04/2022Lee
We wanted a easy weekend break within a couple hours of home that offered a bit of a rustic, screen free experience for us but without the need to pitch a tent. Walks from the door, wood provided for a fire, and basic cooking facilities were great, as was the price. It becomes unaffordable at much more than £100/night. Plus, we liked the conservation ethos of Under Starry Skies and wanted to support this.
08/10/2021Maggie
My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hafan in Wales, the scenery was beautiful, the cabin was cute and cosy and the owners were super friendly.

We stayed at Hafan for two nights and it was wonderful. Lou and Adam were there to welcome us and show us around and then we headed off to settle in. Hafan is cosy and compact, and has everything you need! We cooked our dinner and ate outside and it was perfect. The bed is comfy, the compost loo is super close and easy- and there is a shower and loo for guests just up at the farmhouse too. We loved our stay and would definitely return!
17/07/2019Charlie
We had a wonderful time. The cabin was perfect. The setting was beautiful, better than we'd hoped.
27/05/2019SAM
Absolutely wonderful! It was the most beautiful place, brilliant for the kids, and we were so well looked after. We will definitely be going back. There is lots to explore in the area, but if, like us, you have young children, there is plenty of fun to be had without embarking on long walks: little rivers and waterfalls, trees to climb, meadows to play in. And the cabin itself was incredibly cosy and comfortable - it felt like a real adventure for all of us.
08/04/2019Laura
Had a very nice short stay over Christmas, not long enough to enjoy all it has to offer but very comfortable and warm .Owners very friendly, very peaceful lovely walks No rain
24/12/2018Sally
We had an amazing time. The cabin was perfect and in the most beautiful location - the family had a wonderful time exploring the surrounding countryside. We definitely hope to come back!
28/05/2018Francesca
We had an amazing time at Hafan! Lou was really friendly and helpful - she made us feel really welcome and gave us some good tips about local walks and nearby towns etc. The cabin was really clean, comfortable and cosy (especially with the burner going), with great views and it felt really nicely isolated! The outside toilet was really handy and the bathroom up at the house was great - super warm shower. We had a couple of visitors - dog, cats and cows. Added nicely to the countryside! Hafan is the perfect place to stay for a break and some quiet time - we only wish we'd stayed for longer!
27/10/2017Joe
A lovely place to stay. The cabin was homely and functional and spotlessly clean. Everything had been thought of and our hosts were on hand for any questions. We had a really relaxing weekend playing cards and board games and leaving the world of emails and Internet behind - medicine for the soul!!
14/07/2017Rob
Lovely 3 day weekend in the middle of the welsh countryside, the hosts were super accommodating despite our rather late arrival (never trust apple maps!). Lots of nice board games for our daughter & good amenities nearby. The cabin is a perfect size for a small family, really well maintained and clean. We utilised the BBQ and campfire. And took the hosts recommendation to visit Poppit Sands which was a glorious drive - but maybe check the tides before you leave - as it was out when we arrived and the beach was covered in crabs and jellyfish. We found this fun & hilarious - but some might freak out! Great stay at Hafan, would definitely return :)
07/07/2017Jen
Absolutely loved it! Plenty to do (Amazing how much we did in two days!) and the cabin was amazing - had everything one would need! Wood burner stove was more than adequate for heating and the stars at night were incredible. Lou was very pleasant and gave loads of helpful advise!
25/11/2016Tapfuma
We spent two nights at Hafan for a quiet and relaxed birthday celebration. We had a warm welcome from Adam and Lou, and they had left some locally produced chocolate as a sweet gesture for Dan's birthday. The cabin is cosy and so comfortable, the wood burning stove was easy to light and ensured we stayed warm all night.
14/11/2016Serena
We had a wonderful weekend at Hafan, in the cosy cabin, walking, cooking and escaping the city!
28/10/2016Amy
Three Chicks in the wilds of Wales...myself, husband and two year old had a fantastic time at Hafan. We enjoyed adventure nature walks near by, cosy dinners around the wood burner and shared in the joy and fascination of our little girl seeing the stars for the first time "wow". We loved the mix of back to nature and the low tec retreat while being footsteps away from a hotel quality bathroom. The use of the fridge and access to Wi-Fi at the house made our stay much easier while entertaining and feeding my hungry family. Loved that the hosts thought to proved a kids loo seat and fire guard they really thought of how to make our stay stress free.
24/10/2016Danielle
Loved every moment. Views amazing, great walks and lots to see in the surrounding areas. Campfire was a real treat and great hosts.
29/07/2016Jason
Everything about this little getaway was fantastic, great location, scenery and a warm welcome!
22/07/2016Jamie
We had a lovely time at Hafan (despite the weather). Lots to do in the surrounding area, a very comfortable cabin and great to have a hot shower close by. Warm welcome and friendly conversation with our hostess.
08/07/2016Harriet
We loved our stay at Hafan. Beautiful, peaceful surroundings and everything we could possibly need for a weekend getaway. The perfect spot for stargazing and being at one with nature. The location is brilliant too, close to the Beacons, cute artsy towns Llandeilo and Llandovery, and the beautiful Carmarthenshire coast line. Adam and Lou are brilliant hosts too - and we made good friends with their cheeky cat Bobby. We would absolutely recommend Hafan to anyone who wanted to escape the hustle and bustle of city life :)
03/06/2016Belinda
A lovely isolated location to relax and unwind but still walking distance from the local pub for dinner. Ideally situated to explore the local area or further afield to the Gower, Brecon's or Beaches of West Wales. We received a friendly welcome from the owners who introduced us to the site and were really helpful with advice on places to go and things to do. The chickens on the farm were very friendly too.
30/05/2016James
Had a lovely evening staying in the cabin. It is just perfect for a cosy night in. It is very clean and has everything you need. Only wished we had longer there. Hopefully go back soon. Emma and Andy

Absolutely loved it here. The cabin 'Hafan' was so lovely and had everything we needed. Waking up to the sweet view of pretty countryside, what a good way to start your morning. Lou and Adam have great advices of places to visit and are so helpful with everything. Saw some amazing castle ruins. Couldn't have asked for more. Thank you Lou and Adam!

It’s amazing to come back and see what you’ve both created. This is such a homely and cosy place and guests are going to be really looked after. A wonderful place to relax and just slow down. Thanks also for the lovely banana cake!

A lovely place to stay. The cabin was homely and functional and spotlessly clean. Everything had been thought of and our hosts were on hand for any questions. We had a really relaxing weekend playing cards and board games and leaving the world of emails and Internet behind - medicine for the soul!!

Absolutely loved it! Plenty to do (Amazing how much we did in two days!) and the cabin was amazing - had everything one would need! Wood burner stove was more than adequate for heating and the stars at night were incredible. Lou was very pleasant and gave loads of helpful advise!

We had a wonderful weekend at Hafan, in the cosy cabin, walking, cooking and escaping the city!

We had a lovely time at Hafan (despite the weather). Lots to do in the surrounding area, a very comfortable cabin and great to have a hot shower close by. Warm welcome and friendly conversation with our hostess.

Our time at Hafan was unforgettable. We had such a special time and our 3-yr-son will not stop asking us to go back. It was relaxing, comfortable and the scenery was beautiful.
