Overview
On arrival you may well be greeted by Charlie Brown, terrier and proprietor of Cwm Farm. Well, technically that’s Tim, who lives with Charlie in the cottage across the field, and whose paintings festoon the walls of this raised, Swedish-style log cabin. During the summer, a family of swallows live under the roof, and it’s incredibly easy to pass the time sitting on the covered veranda that extends right around the cabin, watching their aerial acrobatics. There's other wildlife you might hear, with cows and sheep in the neighbouring fields, and a kennel next door where happy occupants celebrate their mealtimes throughout the day.
Retreat inside and you’ll find an open plan space, complete with artists’ easel and desk, a comfortable double bed and a wood burner to keep things cosy. Everything you might need for coffee brewing or sausage frying is also on hand and Charlie will be delighted to assist. The mezzanine level, which is unguarded, is reached by wooden ladder and provides space either for extra guests or just to lie back on the mattresses and read a book. The private compost loo and wonderfully hot, gas-powered shower are reachable down a few steps to the side of the cabin.

Meet your hosts
Owner Tim bought Cwm Farm in 1998 and for many years it was enjoyed by the family as a wonderful rural retreat, during which time it has been renovated and the four acres of land brought back under control. It has been lived in permanently for the last few years.
The Log House Studio was the result of Tim's long-held passion for wooden buildings, two courses in Sweden on traditional log-house construction, and three years of hard graft (in between earning a living as a Communications Consultant).

The main elements of the Log House were built from locally-felled larch trees and constructed largely using only specialist axes and manual logging equipment.
Having completed the Log-House, Tim embarked on his next project (with his daughter) to build Inshriach Shepherd’s Hut – also part of the Canopy & Stars collection! In 2020/2021 Tim, Lizzy and Walter joined forces again to create Inshriach Loghouse, another Westman/Micklethwait 'timmerhus'!
Wildlife & Environment
Cwm Farm is surrounded by agricultural land: Welsh Black cattle graze the field to one side and mixed beef cattle or sheep enjoy life on the fields behind. Birdlife is abundant – buzzards, red kites and and other birds of prey can be seen regularly, and a blackbird is nesting on one of the log-house purlins, with a wren nesting under the verandah.

What a fantastic stay! Tim was truly wonderful, super helpful and he has built such a beautiful log cabin. A perfect weekend away for friends with everything you needed in the gorgeous Welsh country side. He has thought of everything with that cabin!

We had a lovely stay at Tim's cabin, a really impressive structure that's hand built. It was spacious but cosy and being surrounded by some great artwork made it a unique spot. It's a good opportunity to feel fully off grid and enjoy some downtime by the fire or wandering round the meadows, lovely!

Such a lovely stay at the log house. Very cosy and great fun to stay in natural and rustic accommodation, in a beautiful area. Very helpful host.

A beautiful place, the owner was lovely (and so was his dog). Such a peaceful and inspirational place to stay. Some lovely walks. Great place if you want to be off grid and away from it all. Local town (about 15min drive) has some lovely pubs.

We had the most incredible stay at the cabin on Cwm Farm. The cabin was hand built by the owner Tim and true to the Swedish cabin style. Tim was very accommodating and left a bottle of wine for us on arrival. The location is perfect and deep in the countryside. Just the perfect get away from the hustle and bustle.

Absolutely fantastic stay. Great to switch off from the world and live, albeit briefly, at a slower pace of life. Great host and mini host . Will definitely be going back
10/03/2023Stuart
We had a wonderful relaxing stay at The Log House Studio and would highly recommend this as a unique off grid experience in a beautiful Swedish cabin in a remote country setting in west Wales … stargazing at night and we were made so welcome by owner Tim and his beautiful dog Charlie Brown.
09/10/2022Sarah
We had a great time, it was every bit as relaxing as we'd expected. The host Tim was on hand when we arrived to show us around and give us the important tips and tricks. Despite being only a brief visit, we felt duly relaxed from the change of scene and change of pace.
30/09/2022Hugo
My partner and I had wonderful time staying at the log house studio, we absolutely loved the log house and it was so calm to stay there. Tim and Charlie made us feel really welcomed.

We absolutely loved staying at the Log Cabin. It has been beautifully designed and built and has the best combination of off the grid but also feeling incredibly cosy. We absolutely loved it.

Had the most fantastic weekend break with our 2 children and dog. Enjoyed cooking on the campfire, playing boardgames together and relaxing at this very special location. Tim and Charlie are amazing hosts.

We absolutely loved our stay in The Log House Studio, a truly special and unique experience. Everything was very well thought out by Tim, our host. We loved that we were greeted by Charlie Brown, Tim's dog. He even visited us for breakfast. The log burner kept us cosy on the chilly winter evenings! We loved playing cards by candle light. We have never seen so many stars in the night sky, absolutely mesmerising! Falling asleep to the sounds of the nearby stream and owls hooting was so relaxing. A real back to nature and back to basics wonderful experience!
04/03/2022Paula
We really enjoyed our stay in this beautiful log cabin. We left all our devices at home and enjoyed playing chess by candlelight, cooking on the log fire and discovering the local villages. The National Botanical Gardens are a short drive away and well worth a day out. Tim was an excellent host and made us very welcome.
29/01/2022Rhiannon
We had an amazing weekend at the log house. Tim, the owner was such a lovely host, nothing was too much trouble. Very friendly and welcoming. The log house was absolutely beautiful and the views were great to wake up to. Lots of fantastic pubs close by too with amazing food and really friendly staff. Lots to do around too, we were never bored. Beautiful.

Tim was a great host. What a lovely and very talented guy. Adds such a nice touch that Tim himself made this cabin using literally a saw and a couple more tools, we love those personal touches/stories. Lovely cabin, real back to basics which is exactly what we were after. Great stuff to do in the area, highly recommend. Thanks a lot Tim and Charlie!
30/10/2021Lester
Lovely lodge, The craftmanship and attention to detail makes this really special. we really enjoyed our stay here, board games, listening to the rain ping of the excellent roof to sitting on the balcony at night with the lamps lit drinking wine. Just perfect. Tim and his dog Charlie are superb hosts and we'd love to return in the future.
25/09/2021Brian
A very pleasant stay at a wonderful location in a beautifully made-up log cabin! Tim was very helpful and explained all that we needed to know to enjoy our stay. Despite storm Dennis, we thoroughly enjoyed cosying up by the fire in the light of paraffin lamps. Highly recommend!

My partner and I stayed at the log house studio for a cosy winter weekend and it definitely exceeded our expectations, it is a beautiful cabin.

Once in a while - and sometimes it feels like a very long while - you find a place that just enchants and inspires you beyond your wildest holiday dreams. Tim's Log House is one of those very special places. A true resting point for body and soul. Tim is a lovely man with a quiet passion for the world he has created and so kindly shares with us poor souls desperate to duck out of the jet-stream of the digital age - and find ourselves again. We stayed for three days and it felt like we had been there much longer... Because we got a genuine chance to decompress and just listen to the wind in the trees and enjoy the warm glow of the cosiest place we have ever stayed in - and long to stay in again. We salute you, Tim! And thank you Canopy and Stars for the introduction.
28/08/2019matthew
Lovely stay for a long weekend, back to basics and away from the busy work life. Disconnecting and just taking it all in, we both really loved it, and it was a shame we had to leave.
02/08/2019Benjamin
We had a wonderful time and did not want to leave. The owner, Tim, and his lovely dog Charlie Brown were great hosts. The cabin was beautiful. It was cosy and warm and we instantly felt at home. It was remote enough to feel secluded but it was only a short drive to the local pub and nearby town.
29/07/2019Carol
Tim and Charlie Brown were a charming duo who took the best care of us at the lodge. The Cabin is magical, beautifully crafted and decorated. it provided must needed rest bite and it was a real wrench to leave.
12/07/2019Helen
This is a idyllic location that is as beautiful as it is peaceful. Wonderful vista's in every direction, with the sound of a bubbling stream as background to bird song. The cabin is adequate in every way and beautifully made. This is back to basic living at its very best, especially if you enjoy cooking on an open fire! The dog was equally as happy, making new friends with Charlie.
15/04/2019Ian
We had a wonderful stay at the Log House. Meeting Tim and Charlie Brown was lovely and Tim made us feel very welcome. The house is gorgeous and to us, being in this simple environment was just the ticket. The weather was not great, but what better place to sit out a storm than in nature with a solid roof over your head. A very special place.
01/03/2019Mandy
We had a very comfortable stay at the Log House, even though it was off grid in February! It's the most luxurious cabin we've stayed in, but also charmingly rustic and simple. Tim has created a beautiful studio there with plenty of space to potter about in and lots to do on a rainy day. He's a very warm host and it is really special to stay in a place that he created lovingly by hand. Every detail has been considered. The wood burner keeps the cabin lovely and warm, and it's more than easy enough to cook on it with the cast iron pans provided. We cooked up a tagine and sketched by candle light. Perfect. There's even a hot shower (that I shared with an enormous spider) - what more could you possibly need! It's important for us to be able to access countryside easily, and there were some good hill walks and castles just a few minutes drive away, even better to find ones next to local crumbling pubs with cracking local ales. Be warned though, opening hours are different to those in the city! We loved our stay and would definitely recommend it. Tim's living the dream and I would suggest anyone should go and check it out for a slice of inspiration. Also Charlie Brown the dog is a dude.
11/02/2019Lucinda
Fantastic location, great facilities and perfect hosts.
02/09/2018Colin
It was truly a beautiful experience. Tim and Charlie the dog came to greet us on arrival, which I really appreciated as we were stuck in traffic and arrived much later than I had previously told Tim. The Log House Studio had a personal meaning to my husband who is Swedish, but I think anyone who stays here will soon develop a personal meaning with the studio! Tim was a great host and struck a good balance between being available for us and also letting us have the privacy. The building itself is truly impressive, surrounded by woodland and a big grassy pitch for my dog to run in. It felt secluded in a very peaceful sense. The studio was very well equipped with everything you could think of, including maps for the local area, ideas for local activities, umbrellas, LOTS of hurricane lamps & tealights which made the evenings very cosy, amazing gas cooker, chairs in all the right places, the beautiful terrace, I could go on...
03/08/2018Joanna
Our time at the Log House Studio was absolutely fantastic. The cabin was amazing and everything we could have hoped for. Absolutely idyllic with an incredibly helpful host that was always on hand to lend assistance with a lovely dog that ket us company on the rainy days. Thank you Tim and Charlie Brown.
27/07/2018Alasdair
Beautifully peaceful place with warm helpful hosts who made the stay that extra bit special. Lovely to be off grid in such a calm and beautiful setting.
23/07/2018Allie
Fabulous stay. Weather gorgeous. Plenty of places to visit. Artistic interest. Tim and Charlie couldn't be more welcoming and helpful.
29/05/2018simon
We stayed at the log house studio to celebrate an anniversary and it was amazing. Tim (and Charlie the dog) made us super welcome and made sure everything was all set. Tim built the cabin himself and it is a stunning place to spend the weekend. It’s nestled in a remote little village away from everyone. We sat in the veranda and watched the sun go down, then cooked a bbq for dinner. Perfect weekend! Everywhere you look there are personal touches, a truly unique place to stay, we’ll be back!
18/05/2018Arlen
Beautiful cabin in the beautiful Welsh surroundings. Tim and Charlie were very courteous and great hosts. Off-the-grid kind of experience which was exactly what we wished for.
03/11/2017Kristian
We had a lovely break in a great location. A really special building.
06/10/2017Ann
When we arrived I was blown away by how picturesque the the log house was. Tim and Charlie made us feel right at home and gave us the grand tour, explaining how everything works. Every detail of the log studio added to the experience of staying there, from Tims amazing artwork on the walls to the hurricane lamps that lit up the room, it felt so well put together and homely. At night the lack of light pollution meant that the stars put on a show that was breathtakingly beautiful. We honestly couldn't have asked for more, I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing break away from all the hustle and bustle.
15/08/2017Liz
a lovely relaxing couple of days 'off grid'. very warm welcome, and charlie dog was super. Tim was very pleasant and friendly and we felt welcome to share his space, instead of uncomfortable. We felt our dogs were genuinely welcome, and they thoroughly chilled out! lovely lovely studio, very interesting, really well laid out. the shower was hot, the loo was fine, cooking facilites worked well as there were options depending on how you wanted to cook. the meadow was a great axtra space, and the location was really nice for a non beach holiday, lots of rivers, mountains, forests to explore.
07/07/2017Anna
It was amazing! Tim must have seen us coming down the lane as he came to greet us with Charlie Brown. He got us all set up and then left us to it mostly, but was always on hand if we needed anything. The place was amazing. It had everything you needed. I got some serious naps in on the bed, on the mezzanine and in the hammock. The place was so peaceful, it was just perfect and the cabin is beautifully made.
23/06/2017Rach
Had the most amazing 2 days at this beautiful idyllic location. Even though we arrived in the torrential rain the cabin provided us with a warm nad very simplistic comfort. Loved the wood burner, candle lights and constant sounds of the babbling stream.Tim and Charlie were the perfect hosts and very attentive to our needs.
05/06/2017Amanda
i usually ignore surveys but MORE than happy to review Tim's log house - we can't wait to go back!! our dogs had the freedom to roam safely and were in their element, it was wonderful to see. Tim (and charlie!) were so accommodating and the loghouse is SO cleverly built and well thought out! A wonderful getaway and we are already trying to plan our next trip!

The log house studio is absolutely stunning ! Tim and Charlie Brown are very interesting and congenial hosts . The bottle of wine ready on arrival was a lovely touch x we didn't have to leave at 11am as Tim said no one was coming in and he said to just leave when we wanted. The weather was fantastic , the area is beautiful . The local pub the cottage inn is a must visit!! My expectations were high for the log house studio and I am pleased to say they were completely exceeded . Thankyou to Tim and Charlie Brown for allowing us to share your very lovely space in the world xx Tracy Savage , Andrea and Laika dog

We had the best time staying in the Log house studio. Everything you need is provided, and Tim makes you feel very welcome, whilst leaving you to do as you wish. Charlie the dog was an excellent edition, providing an immediate friend, bounding up and down the garden. We loved the inside of the cabin, lots of space to relax and a lovely log fire to keep the cabin cosy and warm. Would absolutely recommend staying here, if you feel like you want to get away from it all. We had fantastic weather which made our daytimes very pleasant, however would be great come rain or shine!!!

We were fortunate with the weather so could enjoy a couple of fires too, it was a lovely relaxing break. Charlie Brown kept our puppy very busy chasing sticks round the large paddock. The studio is a great place to base yourself for the local walks too.

Loved it! First experience of glamping and we are hooked! Beautifully built and maintained log house. Extremely comfortable and warm even at the end of October! Spacious inside and out. Very well and generously equipped. Attractively furnished and decorated ( loved the paintings). Charming and welcoming hosts (man and dog!). Lovely location and lots to see and visit in the general area.

Perfect two day get away into beautiful the welsh countryside. thoroughly enjoyed the lack of electricity, mobile reception and wifi! Replaced by cosy wood burner, hurricane lamps good red wine and the sound of the stream flowing by. Tim was perfect host and Charlie lovely company!

If you need to escape then this is the place to go. Cosy, comfortable and welcoming and total utopia. We thoroughly enjoyed the tranquillity, the stars and the simplicity for the two nights we stayed and did not want to leave.

After a 5 hour drive we arrived at The Log House Studio and it was worth every second of the journey. It was in a beautiful setting and had everything we possibly needed. Our 2 boys enjoyed it thoroughly and Charlie made the trip for them. They played with him non-stop.

The perfect hideaway with the perfect hosts. Tim and Charlie made this one very special location for our recent adventure in Wales.

We arrived to a fine welcome from terrier Charlie and charming owner Tim. Every detail had been thought through which made the stay even more special. The cabin is beautiful and incredibly well constructed with an excellent shower and compost loo. Being off grid was great - the log burner and hurricane lamps gave the cabin a very special atmosphere after dark. Tim's garden is also worth a visit alone - he has created something very beautiful. The surrounding countryside is wonderful too although we were write happy to stay put! A truly memorable trip.

The log house studio is a totally amazing place! Full of character, warmth and love. We LOVED it!!! Fabulous part of the world.

Perfect! We arrived quite late a night so it was almost dark and met with a very warm welcome from Tim & Charlie, including a complimentary bottle of wine & card. We we're taken back by the log house & luckily we got there before it was completely dark as it is all candle lit (no electricity). Cooking facilities we're great, the place was very clean (even the compost look & shower area!) and the bed was comfy. It was lovely waking up in the mornings to the sound of a nearby trickling stream. We are certainly going to stay again. A perfect weekend away! Thank you Tim.

Fantastic! Great accommodation, perfect hosts, superb walks and cosy nights by the fire. A perfect weekend for two and a dog!

We stayed for two nights and wished it was more, the studio was so unique, a real studio with history and stories. Tim's presence was warm, we really felt welcome at the studio and at his home. Charlie the dog is awesome and really well behaved. The facilities were more than sufficient, I felt I could have lived there! We will be back for sure.

We arrived at dusk and were very warmly welcomed by Tim and his wonderfully bouncy dog, Charlie. After a quick lesson in hurricane lamps, woodburning stoves, outdoor showers and woodburning stoves, we were left to relax with in the warmth of the Log House Studio with a bottle of wine and a game of scrabble. We were initially surprised by the minimal cooking facilities (more than one of us was expecting some kind of oven) but the camping gas stove boiled the kettle perfectly quickly and we were very happy to enjoy hot cross buns toasted on the woodburning stove. We passed two very relaxing mornings on the veranda enjoying the peacefullness and slow pace of life that the Log House Studio encourages. We enjoyed a good and relatively easy 3 mile walk to the local pub for a very reasonable but delicious local Welsh lamb pie and cider lunch. We all agreed that we would have loved to have stayed longer because after all, where else can we relax in our pajamas until 11am, have a hot shower with a beautiful view and watch the sunset around the campfire without worrying about anything! Thank you Tim and Charlie for a wonderful stay,

"We absolutely loved it. My husband is constantly snowed under with work, my oldest was desperate to go camping where he could light a fire. I didn't fancy canvas, rain and blow up beds. My youngest is easily spooked too. The Log House had no wi-fi, so work couldn't contact my husband and he could switch off, a fire-pit, cosy cover with a real bed, and space for us all so we weren't on top of each other, so my youngest was with us not to get spooked. It was in a beautiful location, and forced a slower pace of life"

Relaxing stay at the log house studio .Tim the owner is lovely and so is his beautiful dog Charlie brown. Tim has put alot of thought into this place and made our stay enjoyable showing us around the cabin on arrival with added bonus of a welcome bottle of wine and then left us to it .Cosy wood burner, stove inside for cooking if you don't want to use the fire pit, well stocked with kitchen utensils, pots and pans, matches, fire lighters and wood, all the things you need Tim seems to have thought of everything.Lovely hot shower.! Visits from Charlie made our stay. Quiet with just the sounds of nature.Enjoyed the art around the studio too.Good spot for country walks or exploring local attractions nearest town not far and very nice.

We had a great time, it was every bit as relaxing as we'd expected. The host Tim was on hand when we arrived to show us around and give us the important tips and tricks. Despite being only a brief visit, we felt duly relaxed from the change of scene and change of pace.

Fantastic location, great facilities and perfect hosts.

Beautiful cabin in the beautiful Welsh surroundings. Tim and Charlie were very courteous and great hosts. Off-the-grid kind of experience which was exactly what we wished for.

We honestly couldn't have asked for more, I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing break away from all the hustle and bustle.

a lovely relaxing couple of days 'off grid'. very warm welcome, and charlie dog was super.

Had the most amazing 2 days at this beautiful idyllic location. Even though we arrived in the torrential rain the cabin provided us with a warm nad very simplistic comfort. Loved the wood burner, candle lights and constant sounds of the babbling stream.Tim and Charlie were the perfect hosts and very attentive to our needs.

i usually ignore surveys but MORE than happy to review Tim's log house - we can't wait to go back!! our dogs had the freedom to roam safely and were in their element, it was wonderful to see. The log house studio is absolutely stunning ! Tim and Charlie Brown are very interesting and congenial hosts . The bottle of wine ready on arrival was a lovely touch x we didn't have to leave at 11am as Tim said no one was coming in and he said to just leave when we wanted.
