Overview
Good things take time, and this good thing took ten years. Surrounded by 1000 acres of woodland, in the countryside above where the River Forth opens up, Brock (Or its sibling cabin, Tod) is ready to give you some unforgettable downtime. It’s almost too easy to lose yourself on the wraparound deck here, listening to the wind rustle through the woods, and wiggling your toes barefoot in the fresh air. Breakfast will see one of you sipping tea in the morning sunlight by the picture window, whilst the other makes use of the well-equipped kitchen, and by lunch you could be exploring the locale for all the farm shops and tiny cafés that are sprinkled in the stretch of countryside Brock sits in.
The clean lines and unfussy interior prove the difficulty of making good design look as simple as it does. Incredible thought went into making the bothy a calming space to enjoy for a few days, sitting in the loveseat armchair entangled with your partner, or in your own world in an Arne Jacobsen armchair. Keep all hard work at bay, and reserve a private chef for an evening, and when you settle down for the night, tuck yourself up guilt-free in duvets made from recycled plastic bottles and look forward to doing it all again tomorrow.

Meet your hosts
Meet Victoria and the Brucefield Estate Team
It's long been a dream of Victoria to establish an eco-tourism hideaway and it's taken over 10 years. Brock was started and the aim to create a cosy den in the woods that was contemporary with the highest standards of insulation, light and bright and built entirely of timber. Victoria, a biologist by background, has a passion for combining history & wildlife with contemporary and environmentally responsible building design to the delight of guests.
Ania will be your on-site host who looks after guests from arrival to departure and can organise afternoon teas to be delivered, and Stephen will be your host for wildlife & woodland activities as well as a fountain of knowledge for cycling nearby.
Wildlife and the Environment
Over the last four years, Brucefield Estate has worked with independent ecologists, to collate data to achieve a baseline demographic of most of the flora and fauna found. This has been fundamental for them to put together a 10-year wildlife plan which aims to protect and enhance the biodiversity on the estate, and which guests can take part in from pollinator assessments, bat walks to tree planting.
The large veteran trees, some over 300 years old, with all their crevices and cracks offer valuable habitat for not only insects but also their prey such as woodpeckers and bats.
The wetlands support an outstanding assemblage of invertebrate species including the Near Threatened small pearl-bordered fritillary butterflies (Boloria selene). Several Nationally Scarce species have been recorded such as the little spine-palp spider (Allomengea vidua), a woundwort-eating weevil (Thamiocolus viduatus), and a wetland beetle (Quedicus fulvicollis). Plants are also an exceptional feature at Brucefield Estate, with 418 vascular plants (plants with distinguishable roots, stems and leaves), and 151 bryophytes (mosses and liverworts).
Several species are Nationally Scarce including the moss (Ulota calvescens) and liverwort (Calypogeia integristipula). The arable field margins support several species that are of local and national conservation status including corn marigold (Glebionis segetum), corn spurry (Spergula arvensis) and hairy buttercup (Ranunculus sardous).
The Brucefield Estate manage an SSSI on the land which is called Craigmad Wood (approx 28 ha). This includes a lowland heath (6 ha) that is managed with cattle to increase the proportion of growth/pioneer phase heather, increase particular species of grass and lichens. The site also has semi-ancient oak trees and the gorge along the Bluther burn has many interesting species. Guests are very welcome to ask about the 10-year wildlife plan.

Our guests say...
Angela
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Brock and would 100% recommend it to others. Victoria, our host, who welcomed us on arrival, was incredibly friendly, accommodating, and well-informed about things to do in the local area. She even arranged a walking tour through the estate for us with Stephen—an absolutely lovely man with a deep understanding of the estate’s history. The cabin itself was well-designed, beautifully finished, and well-equipped—perfect for a cosy winter weekend away.
13/02/2025Martin
absolutely stunning cabin in beautiful woodland only about an hour's drive outside of Edinburgh. A lovely woman showed us inside and took us through everything. we had a perfect stay
04/10/2024Hannah
Arrived to be greeted by the owner to be helped with bags. Given details of local walks and cycle routes. We used the ‘cook over coals’ dining experience one night and would highly recommend.
01/10/2024Martin
A lovely stay in a beautiful setting. Everything was as described upon booking, clean, tidy and some nice touches too with the fresh bread left for us to enjoy. Didn’t get to meet the hosts but they called us as we were arriving to check everything was okay and were very helpful. The suggested walks were a nice easy activity too.
28/09/2024John
First-timers in an eco-lodge, and we absolutely loved it! The scandi-esque bothy was well-appointed, comfortable, with the bonus of very stable wifi (which we were not expecting!)
12/07/2024Dan
This place is such a find! The bothy has been so thoughtfully designed. Everywhere is spotlessly clean and there’s a clear Scandinavian influence that makes for an intuitive, cosy and genuinely cool space. We really appreciated Dawid welcoming us warmly and talking us through the cabin, the area and offering his help. He really struck the balance of being accommodating and kind, but never imposing. And his recommendations were fantastic! We loved exploring the sprawling grounds with our dog, Max, and enjoying the outdoor fire pit in the evening. Easiest five star review ever
28/05/2024Amy
We had a lovely stay at Brock - a beautiful location which was really well located for the sights we wanted to see.
24/05/2024Jasmine
Had the most amazing stay in Brock. The bothy was warm, well equipped and we were made to feel at home straight away. Lovely to have the breakfast hamper included. The location was idyllic. So quiet. A lovely place to relax.
19/01/2024Nicola
We had an absolutely wonderful stay at Brock, Brucefield Estate. The cabin was beautiful, finished to a really high standard. It is incredibly well insulated so retains all the warmth from the wood burning stove. Dawid could not have been more welcoming and gave us a detailed introduction to the cabin but we were then left in peace to enjoy our break.
20/10/2023John
We had a week in Brock which we loved. Nice and cosy with the underfloor heating. We didn’t need to use the log burner. Lovely welcome pack with milk, bread etc. Dog received delicious biscuits, dog bed/bowls and a secure line to use. We lit the outdoor fire pit and enjoyed a clear night toasting marshmallows. Well equipped kitchen, full size fridge. Great walk through the woods on the estate. Saw deer, owls and bats. Visited Falkirk wheel and the kelpies. Also walked up to Castle Campbell(closed in winter) in Dollar, steep but worth it. Can recommend a trip out to Blackness castle and Linlithgow. Also did a coastal drive to St Andrews with lots of places to stop along the way. Great location to explore the area.

We had the most incredible stay here over Easter. We marvelled at all the small and thoughtful details that turned this into an exceptional little Bothy - underfloor heating, discreet strip lighting, and modern appliances to name a few - as well as the lovely welcome breakfast basket of fresh local produce. We loved it so much that we cancelled plans to go out so we could stay in and enjoy this wonderful little cabin. Not to mention Dawid, Victoria and the team were super helpful and attentive. Highly recommend!

We had a lovely weekend in this cosy, beautiful cabin. It had everything we needed, was in a great location and the team who manage the estate were friendly and helpful. Our favourite aspect was the log burner inside which kept the cabin nice and warm.

We had the most comfortable, peaceful stay at The Brock. The cabin was well equipped, cosy and warm and the outdoor space was lovely. We enjoyed breakfast on the veranda and a bbq around the fire pit listening to male and female owls calling to each other. We really enjoyed a walk at Alva that was suggested by our host who was lovely and very helpful. Our breakfast pack was a lovely touch and the shampoo etc which was made from natural ingredients was really nice. Would definitely recommend if peace and quiet is needed with many walks close by

Brock is an amazing bothy in beautiful surroundings on the Brucefield Estate. High end spec on everything, a gorgeous wood burning stove, with the most comfortable bed, along with the treat of under floor heating in the kitchen & bathroom. Great woodland views in a lovely quiet location. Victoria, Dawid & Graham could not have been more welcoming & helpful!

The perfect place to get away from city life, without having to journey for hours to get there. The estate is vast and there are walking paths in place to let you explore it in your own time. The windows let in so much light to the space, even on cloudy days and are perfect for spotting wildlife from the comfort of the sofa!

Arrived to be greeted by the owner to be helped with bags. Given details of local walks and cycle routes. We used the ‘cook over coals’ dining experience one night and would highly recommend.

First-timers in an eco-lodge, and we absolutely loved it! The scandi-esque bothy was well-appointed, comfortable, with the bonus of very stable wifi (which we were not expecting!)

Had the most amazing stay in Brock. The bothy was warm, well equipped and we were made to feel at home straight away. Lovely to have the breakfast hamper included. The location was idyllic. So quiet. A lovely place to relax.

We had a week in Brock which we loved. Nice and cosy with the underfloor heating. We didn’t need to use the log burner.
