Overview
Hidey-hole Cabin is the perfect space for unwinding both day and night. Spend the day watching the wildlife in the fields from the huge picture window while in your king-size bed or canopied deck. Then through the gate to the path round Bewl Water for a pleasant stroll around part of the 750-acre reservoir or the whole 12 mile walk, if you are feeling fit enough! You could walk into Ticehurst Village and visit the great artisan shops and the award-winning pub, although The Bull Inn is only at the top of the road to Downash Wood and makes a good stop for lunch on a short or a long walk around Bewl Water. When you get back, you can fire up the Chesney's log burner and BBQ, sit out under the stars and at the press of a button, transform your picture-window into a movie night screen. There is a popcorn maker and some classic cinema tubs to pour it into for that true movie premier experience.
The cabin has been designed by owners Stephen and Jane to help unwind and immerse yourself in nature, forgetting about the worries of daily life. The outdoor decking, huge picture-window and bi-folding doors keep you connected to nature, while a well-equipped kitchen and bathroom means you sink into luxury without a care in the world. Hidey-hole looks out to a 150-year-old Oak tree in which Stephen's son, Daniel, once said he wanted a treehouse. He never did get his wish of a kids play treehouse, instead his dad built two fully equipped treehouses secluded in 33 acres of land and woodland at Downash Wood. You might see guests coming and going at the private parking area, however, Hidey-hole is tucked away, so you'll be blissfully undisturbed for your whole stay in your very own Hidey-hole.

Meet your hosts
Meet Stephen & Jane
Stephen grew up on a farm in Kent and Jane is a city girl at heart having grown up in London. They bought Downash Wood as a family retreat, while their kids finished their schooling in South London. Their son dreamt of a treehouse in the woodland, so Stephen spent the next three years obtaining planning permission and building their dream secluded treehouses and cabins to share with guests.
Wildlife & Environment
The treehouses and cabins are set within five acres of deciduous woodland known as Downash Wood. Downash Wood is bordered by Bewl Water Reservoir on the north side and Tinkers Lane on the south side. The land is on the borders of Kent and East Sussex, close to three ancient settlements of Three Leg Cross to the West, Ticehurst to the South and Flimwell to the East. Resident deer, active badger setts, plenty of pheasants and rabbits can be found at Downash Wood. Buzzards, woodpeckers, barn owls and other birds can be spotted, and butterflies at the right time of year. There are meadow areas with a variety of grasses and wild flowers.

An amazing 3 nights set in beautiful countryside. I'm an ecologist by profession so it was great to be amongst nature and taking some time to unwind for my partner's birthday.
07/03/2025Max
Our weekend away at Hidey-Hole Cabin was more than we expected- a well-equipped, warm little slice of heaven! We couldn’t fault it for a romantic valentines getaway! Movie nights with the projector are a must almost as great as waking up to see deer trotting past the picture window.
14/02/2025Susannah
We loved our stay. It was private and cosy
10/02/2025Bernie

21/06/2024Jamie
Fabulous cabin located in quiet wooded area adjacent to Bewl Water. Luxurious, fitted with everything you could possibly want, including a popcorn maker and projector/screen although the view from the cabin is more than enough to keep you happy!! Very comfortable, warm, a fantastic home from home. We wished we could have stayed longer!
12/06/2024Marjory
It was perfection. Being out in the open, away from the busy city life was pure bliss! Quiet and peaceful
26/04/2024Shelby
Our stay was perfect. Peaceful, isolated and luxurious. All the little touches in the cabin were simply wonderful - from the incredibly soft sheets, to the hot and powerful shower, to the USB ports, coffee and drinks provided and - especially - the view from the bed and the wonderful projector screen.
08/04/2024Sarah
A two night Valentines stay at Hidey-hole cabin was the perfect relaxing romantic break we needed. Set in the Beautiful Sussex countryside and a very short walk to the shoreline of Bewl Water and onto Three-Leg Cross and Ticehurst. Lovely local shops and great cafes and pubs. Can very much recommend The Bull for friendly staff and great food and local beer. Lots of wildlife to see from the window too. The cabin is the perfect set- up with everything beautifully fitted and provided. Immaculately presented and just the most perfect stay . Thoroughly recommended and we will be back
14/02/2024Paul
Absolutely fabulous! Such a gorgeous special place, well thought out with everything we needed, and perfect for a much needed break to allow us to have time and space without our (lovely!) kids!
19/01/2024Rachel
a very special place to escape from the everyday and reconnect with nature
31/12/2023Ruth
We enjoyed an autumnal stay at the Hidey Hole Cabin in Ticehurst. We wanted somewhere immersed in nature but cosy and modern. We also wanted a place not too far from home. We had a magical time - we watched the moon rise through the clouds I(almost full) and venus make an appearence and later on, the owls hooted through the trees which was pretty special.
25/10/2023leanne
We had such a wonderful stay in the hidey-hole cabin. The little touches really made it extra special & the projector was brilliant! We moved enjoying the autumn sunshine on the Well-being decking. Really was so peaceful & perfect! We will definitely be back.
23/10/2023Sarah
It was wonderful. Exactly what we needed. Back to nature with a bit of luxe!
09/10/2023Rachel
We had an amazing weekend stay at the Hidey Hole Cabin! A tranquil location, surrounded by peaceful nature. We loved all the little extras which gave it a luxurious feel. The welcome goodies (milk, juice, coffee, biscuits - and all from local independent companies!) were great. The cinema screen and popcorn were fun. Extra blankets for sitting on the deck were handy, we loved the log fire & BBQ on the deck. And we loved reading and relaxing in the swing chairs. The only downside is that we had to leave at the end of the weekend!!!
06/10/2023Laura
Amazing place, we really enjoyed staying at Hidey-hole Cabin
18/09/2023Darren
Excellent stay at a wonderful cabin, lovely to see so much wildlife and dark skies for stargazing.
06/09/2023Paul
We had a lovely, relaxing stay in Hidey-hole. Nature walks, seaside excursions and country pub food made for a varied holiday.
14/08/2023Koen
Me and my boyfriend had a lovely stay at the Hidey-hole. It was relaxing and peaceful, the area is so tranquil and we were completely on our own. We loved sitting in front of the big open window and then at night time, watching films on the projector. The cabin was very spacious and had a great BBQ too. We would definitely return again.
26/07/2023Becca
Everything was well-thought out to make the stay very easy and relaxing. The cabin is set a distance away from other cabins and so we felt very private and secluded, which we loved!
05/05/2023Jinlin
Upon our arrival the cabin was lovely and warm, the owners had supplied some local fruit juice and cookies which were a welcome treat. The big windows made the cabin bright and feel more spacious. Having porch areas both sides allowed us to get fresh air into the cabin even in light rain conditions whilst cooking. Cooking was really easy in the cabin and the kitchen was well equipped. The bathroom was lovely and clean, only thing to note was the shower pressure was a bit hit and miss. The bed was comfortable and the view out of the big window was wonderful. We also enjoyed using the projector and screen in the evenings. Our favourite feature however was the inbuilt sound system, it was so nice to have a high quality sound and our favourite music on. The cabin was perfectly set within countryside and it was lovely to spend time watching birds, squirrels and sheep. My partner is easily awoken by noise and some shooting nearby was a bit of a disturbance but only for a short time. We enjoyed using the trolley to transport our belongings from the carpark to the cabin, a clever idea to have on hand as we would have had to take several trips otherwise.
19/04/2023Maris
Amazing!!. So relaxing, we did nothing!. Great to just sit back watch the trees, birds. We are, played Scrabble and just loved being away from the chaos of everyday life
22/02/2023Rhianne
An amazing, quiet and relaxing space that offers everything you need for a ‘getaway from it all’ break.
03/02/2023Shelley
We had a fantastic little getaway at the Hidey-Hole Cabin. The Hidey-hole is such a beautiful cabin, with everything we needed. The wellness deck is fantastic and we loved sitting out there and we're rewarded with a visit from some local deer. After the sun went down the projector was brilliant to enjoy some movies on. One of our favourite Canopy & Stars stays to date.
25/01/2023Charlotte
We had the most wonderful and carefree time from booking homely Hidey-Hole, to enjoying it's beautiful setting and interior, through to making the most of the extras like the log fire and popcorn machine. When you stay away, you always hope for this standard of care and attention, but can so often be let down. Not with Hidey-Hole! Stephen and Jane were the kindest hosts and everything was perfect...we will most certainly be back! Extra special thank you for saving our weekend away when another company cancelled on us last minute.
20/01/2023Emma
Beautiful setting and wonderfully appointed cabin. Cozy with brilliant touches such as the projector screen made it a relaxing break.
18/01/2023Ashley
We absolutely loved our stay here. Was the perfect countryside retreat and a great break from London. Everything was handled perfectly by the hosts and we couldn’t recommend it more. Ticehurst is a lovely little Village with some great pubs. Will definitely be booking again.
02/12/2022Tom
We had a lovely relaxing stay at the Hidey-Hole Cabin. We arrived Friday evening and departed Monday morning. The cabin was great, particularly the large window and the projector. We went for walks, stopped off at local pubs and villages and had dinner at a local vineyard.
21/10/2022Rebecca
The cabin was perfect so well thought out, the projector and sound system were so amazing. Whether we were watching the sunsets with champagne or watching a film with popcorn I cannot fault this place.
07/10/2022Charlotte
Had a wonderful 2 night short break. Very peaceful and didn’t see another person while we were there. Lovely accommodation, everything has been thought of.
31/08/2022Michelle
We had a wonderful stay and it was just what was needed. Some time out on our own away from life's stresses. We loved the look of the Hider-Hole and the fact it had a private out door space, wood burning bbq and was right by some great walks and Bewel Water. It was a great place to just relax and spend time together. The owners were really helpful and accommodating and would highly recommend.
15/08/2022Emer
Really special. Private, peaceful location and the cabin was done to a high spec. Loved everything about our stay.
29/07/2022Kirsty
We had a lovely mini-honeymoon break, The place was perfect for us to unwind and relax after a busy day!
11/07/2022Louise
It was an absolute dream break for us both. We loved the peace and tranquility and joy it afforded us.
01/07/2022Andy
It was totally glorious, had the best time. The amazing weather certainly helped. Excellent recommendations for local places to visit/eat/walk etc. the cabin itself is small but perfectly formed in the most perfect setting.
15/06/2022Katie
Really enjoyed the tranquility with all the luxuries. Wonderful for long walks and peace and quiet just the sound of sheep, the wind rustling the leaves, the sound of birds and a pheasant who seemed to live just outside.
03/06/2022Sharon
We had an amazing stay, walks, pub lunches, movies, shopping and time for us (we have 4 children!) The log burner was amazing and the attention to detail in the lodge was perfect. Thank you for a brilliant stay.
30/05/2022Mandy
The whole experience was lovely. Every detail inside the cabin was carefully thought out, from the popcorn, milk and fresh juice in the fridge, and the tea and coffee available. There were games to play and it was just a lovely few days. We had a BBQ and toasted the marshmallows provided. It was lovely!
25/05/2022Katie
We loved our stay at Hidey-hole cabin. It was beautifully built, surrounded by nature and really clean.
04/05/2022Alex
2 nights after Easter weekend. Nice long walk around the resevoir. Got lost but a nice lady guided us back. Room had everything you needed for the stay and the BBQ was easy to understand and get going.
18/04/2022Aaron
We left after two nights wanting to stay for longer! We loved being able to hear the bird song, look out over the fields without seeing anyone else, and feel cosy and entertained in the cabin (thanks to the projector!)

Lovely secluded location, the view to wake up to is so relaxing and peaceful. This cabin is such a well thought through space with everything you need.

Had a lovely relaxing time at Hidey-Hole cabin, it really does feel like a hidey hole! A couple of minutes walk down a path through a couple of fields and you are in your very own private space. Wonderfully cosy with all mod cons and some luxuries like the projector screen and popcorn machine. The lovely covered decking with wood burner/bbq was great on a chilly evening for toasting marshmallows and listening to the local owls calling to each other. Highly recommended!

20/12/2021Jecca
My husband stayed at the Hidey-hole cabin in December, and it was perfect and exactly what we were looking for. We wanted a quiet weekend away where we could relax, rest, and reconnect. The cabin was spotless and had everything we needed. We were able to cook easily as the kitchen was well equipped. The projector was so easy to easy. We just connected our mac and off we went. We will definitely look to book at Downash Wood again in 2022, perhaps bringing our daughter for a treetop stay. Thank you to the hosts, our weekend was perfect.
10/12/2021Emma

Our stay at the Hidey Hole cabin was absolutely fantastic! The cabin was really easy to get to from London by public transport, so don’t be deterred if you don’t have a car! The cabin is really secluded, surrounded by woodland and gorgeous views. The cabin was equipped with everything you could need for a couple of days away. The projector and popcorn machine were lovely additions, as were the little touches like juices, milk and cookies. The deck overlooking the woods is lovely and was the perfect place to be proposed to! Hidey Hole cabin was the perfect place to relax, recharge and enjoy being out of the city and in nature for a few days. We’ll definitely be back!

We had a wonderful long weekend at the hidey-hole. We were there during a heatwave and the shaded deck and Adirondack chairs were so welcome! During covid, it was so nice to be in, what felt like, the middle of nowhere - no contact with anyone apart from people we passed on the walk round Bewl Water. It was just what we needed! The little kitchen is great and the projector was wonderful. We used the wood fired BBQ, which is more of a smoker than a grill, but when the flames died down, it was a great little fire for making 'smores on. The directions and instructions for check in and check out were clear. The cabin was clean. All around, a great stay!

The most amazing cabin we've ever stayed in! Secluded and private to really escape from the world. Amazing tech for music and movies. Popcorn maker great touch
07/07/2021Amy
Lovely and relaxing, well equipped cabin for two people, and so nice watching the antics of the sheep. Really nice to have an outside firebox/bbq so we could spend time outside in the evenings and watch the stars and wildlife. The Movie screen/projector and bluetooth sound system was a welcome extra.
28/05/2021Kyle
We had the best staycation at Hidey-hole Cabin. We loved the beautiful interior and exterior, and couldn’t stop photographing it. Beautiful scandi style architecture situated in a quiet wood. It rained a lot during our stay so we snuggled up to old films on the projector drinking good wine. When the sun was out we sat on the terrace reading. Perfect indoor and outdoor amenities for a UK stay and everything you need to recharge. 100% recommend and would return! Thank you !

An amazing 3 nights set in beautiful countryside. I'm an ecologist by profession so it was great to be amongst nature and taking some time to unwind for my partner's birthday.

Our weekend away at Hidey-Hole Cabin was more than we expected- a well-equipped, warm little slice of heaven! We couldn’t fault it for a romantic valentines getaway! Movie nights with the projector are a must almost as great as waking up to see deer trotting past the picture window.

Absolutely loved it. This is the third time we’ve stayed here and it just gets better every time.

Absolutely fabulous! Such a gorgeous special place, well thought out with everything we needed, and perfect for a much needed break to allow us to have time and space without our (lovely!) kids!

a very special place to escape from the everyday and reconnect with nature

We enjoyed an autumnal stay at the Hidey Hole Cabin in Ticehurst. We wanted somewhere immersed in nature but cosy and modern. We also wanted a place not too far from home. We had a magical time - we watched the moon rise through the clouds I(almost full) and venus make an appearence and later on, the owls hooted through the trees which was pretty special.

An amazing, quiet and relaxing space that offers everything you need for a ‘getaway from it all’ break.

We absolutely loved our stay here. Was the perfect countryside retreat and a great break from London. Everything was handled perfectly by the hosts and we couldn’t recommend it more. Ticehurst is a lovely little Village with some great pubs. Will definitely be booking again.
