Overview
The Riverside, so close to London you can almost get the tube, is a remarkably peaceful spot for idling away a couple of days and letting everything literally drift past you. Inside, you’ll find a pleasant jumble of history, from Arts & Crafts stained glass to a 70s coffee table inlaid with French ceramics. Outside is the river, where cows graze on the far banks and the occasional paddle boarder floats by. If you feel like joining them, take the double & single inflatable canoes, paddle board or rowing dingy provided and splash around for a while.
Despite being almost in town, this might be slightly wilder living than you’re used to. It’s a ten-minute walk from the nearest parking and solar power means you can’t spend all day on devices, but then why would you want to? The modern world is near enough to dip back into, with The Seven Stars a quick stroll across the meadow and a 1.5-mile walk taking you to Ripley, where you’ll find the Michelin-rated Anchor, The Half Moon on the edge of the green and the 17th century Ship, which epitomises a traditional country pub. Further afield are the famous RHS Wisley Gardens and the Surrey Gin Distillery, National Trust houses and historic sites to explore, but if you’d rather leave it all behind, then fire up the bbq, sit back and watch for the owls and bats that flit past in the dusk.

Meet Andrea
A decade ago Andrea was considering buying a holiday property in the West Country but found this small plot of land next to the river and overlooking the flood plain. She realised that she could be close to water and nature without the long journey to get there. The previous owners had spent their summers and weekends there since the 1970s. There are four cabins, the original buildings were little more than shacks built by town folks who wanted to spend a bit of time in the country and go fishing back in the 1930s.
Rebuilding the Riverside to create a place that could be used in all seasons was a challenge but an enjoyable one. The aim was to use sustainable and recycled building materials. Cedarwood cladding and the cedar shingle roof have now weathered to a silvery grey. Andrea works as a valuer of Art and Antiques and appreciates all kinds of things that have a past life. Arts and Crafts stained glass windows allow light to travel between two rooms. Everything from the solid oak floor to the windows has been salvaged. It was a real adventure sourcing materials and furniture, the 1970’s coffee table has leaf impressed tiles by the French artist potter Roger Capron, who also made the bathroom tiles. An old campaign trunk houses games for a rainy day and a collection of vintage blankets can be used for cool evenings outside.
Wildlife & Environment
You can watch swans and their cygnets from your bed, in summer a fashion parade of different patterned Belted Galloway cows troop past. When you take to the water kingfishers, damsel and dragon flies and the occasional heron, at dusk short-eared and barn owls.

What a beautiful, cosy escape from reality
23/12/2024Anna
An adventure, living off grid but Riverside well equipped for keeping us warm and fed. An attractive location near the canal and lock with various pubs in walking distance. Very restful
02/12/2024Virginia
It was really a beautiful cabin, very tastefully decorated and the facilities well thought through. It was so well situated on the river bank (we even saw a kingfisher!), and we loved the fact it was so off the beaten track, even though we were in Surrey. The local pub (The Seven Stars) had great food and the staff looked after us and our dog so well. The support from Mark, the owner, was fantastic. He was clear and concise in his explaining how things worked, where things were, and local eateries, and he came within 10 minutes to sort the filled compostable toilet. Cannot recommend it enough.

The Riverside is a cosy and peaceful retreat on the water, and we had a wonderful time. Our stay was restful and we enjoyed being so close to nature. The cabin has everything one needs for a comfortable stay, and even provides kayaks for use. There's lots to do nearby, and our host was very informative. But it was a pleasure to spend time enjoying our holiday home, the surroundings and the beautiful view.

Easy to book. Never used Canopy & Stars before. Incredibly helpful host who met us with key and explained everything including good tips for our stay. It was an escape from day to day life. Restful time with option to do activities if we so wished. The house reminded us of Wind in the Willows.
21/10/2024Alice
It was very peaceful there. Felt very much away from it all
30/08/2024Kate
We absolutely loved The Riverside and our hosts were amazing.
19/07/2024Michelle
A wonderful and tranquil few days by the river, overlooking the fields and the cows. You wouldn’t believe that it felt that we were a million miles away yet so close to London. The cabin had everything we needed and more! Paddling up and down the river was sublime.

Mark walked me and my luggage to The Riverside and already I loved it before I even got there. He was very friendly and full of useful information. When I opened the front door it was certainly a Wow! moment. The accommodation was decorated and furnished beautifully but then I saw my view that was to be for a few days and it was an even bigger Wow! moment. Although the weather for two of my three days was rubbish I just sat back and allowed myself to do nothing but enjoy my book, the views and the peace and quiet.
20/05/2024Fiona
Amazing long weekend with my partner, brilliant place to relax and kick back, or be as active as you like. We appreciated the arts and crafts pieces that have been used in the space to decorate. The views over the water from the terrace and the bed were mesmerising.
10/05/2024Caryn
just what was needed, on the edge of the river sandwiched between a river and canal , ment that could do plenty of walk options and delight in nature. Able to slow down and really relax and recharge
26/04/2024bunty
I went with my partner, teenage daughter and an adult friend for a birthday celebration/ short break from London. The location was rather lovely and surprising and only a short drive from our home in south London. (Love a short drive!) It was so nice to wake up by the water, with views of fields and marshes. The cabin was very cosy and generally comfortable, if somewhat eccentric. It was a good base for some lovely easy walks and visiting some interesting places in that part of Surrey. We weren’t too ambitious as we were all in need of some rest
05/04/2024Jane
This was the most perfect stay. It’s a beautiful little cabin on the river. It’s been beautifully kitted out and I love the addition of the rowing boat for use. Mark is the most amazing host. There are so many pub walks which my dog adored. Mark and Andrea have created the most helpful folder for things to do in the area too!
15/03/2024Lara
We absolutely loved our getaway - perfect escape with our young daughter and dog.
16/02/2024Rob
Absolutely magical, the Riverside is a gem and the communication from Andrea and Mark was exceptional. I could not recommend anywhere more highly. The setting is just magical in between rivers and the house itself has been so lovingly and stylishly put together. Came wait to come back.
10/11/2023PA
Mark met us to walk us to Riverside. He couldn’t have been more helpful. It was right on the river and absolutely magical. The locks, the walks, the barges, the cows, the view…. Simply spectacular
03/11/2023Ginnie
Lovely little place to stay. Extremely cosy with the fire lit! Great just to sit by the river and watch wildlife go by.
22/09/2023Lauta
A wonderful relaxing and peaceful few days. Great weather and long days allowed us to make the most of the waterside setting, fire pit and BBQ. Did lots of local walks and enjoyed sitting by the water, watching the wildlife
23/06/2023sandy
We had an amazing and relaxing stay at The Riverside. The peace and tranquility it provided through being able to sit back and watch the ducks and swans go past on the river gave us a great opportunity to disconnect from everything else for the weekend.
16/06/2023Alex
A lovely get-away, peaceful and secluded
01/05/2023Claire
We had a lovely few days in this georgeous hideaway beside the river Wey. It was fabulously off- grid - and worked absolutely fine, and the bedroom overlooking the river was really lovely.
27/03/2023Zoe
We had a wonderful stay at the riverside. The hosts were very welcoming and gave us plenty of on site information. The cabin itself is very well equipped with a super cosy stove to keep us warm during the chilly evenings. Great location with a pub within walking distance and a lovely canal that runs along the property. Would love to come back herrnijnthr summer. Also an excellent selection of games provided! Beautifully decorated too!
24/03/2023Laura
The riverside was very picturesque. It was very peaceful which was perfect for a much needed break. The local village was lovely with plenty of places to eat and drink (we especially liked pinnocks cafe). There were many walks to go on from the cabin which mark gave us plenty of info on. The log fire was great for keeping the place warm and cosy on the evenings. Just watching the ducks and swans go past throughout the day was nice. All in all a great place to stay and would highly recommend.
17/02/2023Shaun
Great stay here. Remote cabin vibe where you feel in the middle of nowhere, with the convenience of a village a 30min walk away. Full equipped accommodation with all mod cons.
20/01/2023Rob
We had a fantastic time. The hosts were very knowledgeable and took us through everything we needed to know, including best places to visit during our stay. They are obviously very passionate about the area.
25/11/2022Hannah
Absolutely fabulous, relaxing stay! Loved the location, boat, and sitting by the fireplace (both inside and outside). Highly recommend!
11/11/2022Katie
Very relaxing and enjoyable stay, thank you. Gorgeous to be right on the water. We loved using the little boats provided to explore the river.
07/10/2022Eva
We had a fantastic stay at the Riverside - it really lives up to its name being between a canal and the river with another nearby. It was so relaxing sitting outside watching life slowly pass by. Everything is so beautifully put together and real care has gone into the design and the placement of everything. Lying in bed looking through the huge windows was also a lovely experience. The dog had a fantastic holiday too - running about in the wild area across the river from the cottage and improving his swimming enormously. We actually managed to tire him out!
09/09/2022Maggie
We had an amazing time at The Riverside, it was everything we hoped it would be and more.
12/08/2022Anjuli
Blissful! Okay, we were lucky with the weather but this glorious bolthole would be idyllic at any time. Delightfully private and restful (very comfy bed with views that made you want to lie there all day) and thoughtfully and imaginatively designed with all you need - and then more, such as rowing boat and telescope. Just heaven.
24/06/2022Helena
The Riverside was one of the most amazing places i have ever been, i booked this for my dog (Bow) as a holiday who had just been diagnosed with cancer, her face when we arrived was one i will never forget. Everything about it was perfect, i can not think of anything negative to say, sunset in front of you while laying in bed, going for a ride in the boat with Bow and seeing the cows in the water and taking walks. was never the need to watch tv or go on our phones. It was so quiet all you could hear was nature and the faint sound of church bells in the distance. Great kitchen and plenty of storage, toilet and shower had no issues, very cosy and clean, we loved the box of games and binoculars. This place is known to me as Bow's happy place and i am so thankful i found it, she loved laying at the french doors facing out to the field at sunset, sitting next to the river watching the water while holding her ball under her paw, swimming in the river with her lifejacket on, i can tell it was one of the most happiest times of her life and i will always remember The Riverside and see it as a place to connect with her. I would like to say thank you so so much for giving me this memory xx
13/06/2022matthew
We had a relaxed, comfortable, peaceful time and the dogs loved it too. Facilities were good, location fantastic and the wild water swimming each day right in front of our accommodation was awesome.
09/05/2022Jackie
We had such a lovely time at Riverside. Idyllic setting and so peaceful, just what we needed after a stressful few years. We're already trying to find dates we can return! Mark was very helpful on our arrival pointing out walks, local history and general things in the cabin we needed to know. Our dog was ecstatic to watch all the swans and ducks go by daily, and it was lovely to sit by the river and play with our baby in such a pretty location. Lots of lovely walks in all directions, with a nice pub at the end of each for a well earned pub lunch! The fact you can hop in a boat from your accommodation and then come back to a firepit was just magical. Thank you for restoring our faith in holidays!
02/05/2022Kate
A beautiful and tranquil place on the water.
20/04/2022Fernanda
We had a lovely time. So special to stay next to a river. Great place to explore or bunk down and stay cosy.
04/04/2022Nancy
Fantastic place to get away and unwind for a couple of days! Great little property with stunning views and character.
30/03/2022Katrina
Had a relaxing time staying at The Riverside. The cabin decor was gorgeous and had an amazing view. Andrea and Mark were very responsive and welcoming. They gave us advice around the best places to visit in the area, which we really appreciated. We loved having the opportunity to immerse ourself in nature, taking full advantage of the kayak, row boat and open water swimming on offer.
25/03/2022Bethany
We had a couple of really relaxing days here swimming and paddling up the river, watching the birds and enjoying the wood burner.
21/02/2022Carla
I stayed for a long weekend with my husband and three year old daughter, and it was absolutely perfect for us. We had plenty of room and space for the three of us, with my daughter having her own sleeping space. There are plenty of activities to do in the local area but we spent most of the time hunkering down and just enjoying the property - it was absolutely magical to just be together in such an idyllic setting.
18/02/2022Abigail
Absolutely fabulous! Peaceful, beautifully decorated and could see ducks from my bed. What more could you ask for! Hosts were incredibly helpful and very welcoming.
09/02/2022Trish
We had a lovely stay. The cabin was the perfect escape from the world with no tv, WiFi etc. it made us play games and just enjoy each other’s company.
26/01/2022Kayleigh
Lovely friendly welcome, great cabin for water based or walking activities. Fully stocked cabin with everything you would need for a short and comfortable stay!
21/01/2022Cor
We had a lovely stay at the Riverside. The location was beautiful, with lots of walks nearby. We were looking for a relaxing getaway and that's what we got!
12/01/2022Lucy
We had an absolutely brilliant time there.
27/12/2021Sue
This was a beautiful weekend away. Mark met us at the gate entrance and showed us down to the property. He carried our bags for us even! Tour around the house and facilities and some local knowledge. During our stay we did some walks, went into Ripley, wonderful dinner at the Anchor - recommend this! Went to the farmers markets which happened to be the Christmas one which was excellent. Really great local produce. Even went for a winter dip in the river which was mighty refreshing. The house is decorated beautifully with reclaimed and vintage items. It is a really special place. Mark was very contactable for anything we needed during our stay. We will be back and recommending to everyone!
10/12/2021Kelsie
We had a lovely and peaceful stay at The Riverside. Everything was perfect. The views from the windows over the river are amazing and being able to walk, cycle and row from the cabin made it very relaxed. Andrea and Mark was great hosts and we hope to come back soon!
01/12/2021Henry
We've just spent a wonderful weekend at The Riverside. Andrea and Mark were great hosts, taking the time to show us how everything worked and point us in the direction of some lovely walks. The place is super nice with a big comfy bed to enjoy morning views over the river and an excellent log burner that kept us snug in the evenings. We're already looking at dates to book in the spring or summer so we can go out exploring in the Kayaks! Thanks for having us.
26/11/2021sophie
We had a great stay location was stunning cabin was just amazing and hosts just so helpfull
19/11/2021Jason
Staying at the Riverside was a home away from home. The location was perfect (both in terms of getting there from London and also the surroundings), it was really comfortable, and had everything that was needed for a long weekend.
29/09/2021Zeynep
A great couple of nights at The Riverside. A unique setup with its quirks but that’s all part of the charm and Mark above and beyond to get us in and settled. The kids spent as much time as possible in or on this very quiet bit of river so it seemed very safe. Fire pit and BBQ for the evening, ideal. So lucky with the weather. Now looking for our own riverside cabin.

We had a really relaxing 2 nights at The Riverside. This is a back to basics cottage with the river literally in your back garden. No TVs and a cozy fireplace with board games and quiz books meant you were able to appreciate the simple things and really switch off from everyday life.

A total little gem of a place, there's part of me that doesn't want to say too much about it because I want to keep it all to myself! It is such a beautiful setting and wonderfully peaceful. The place itself is well equipped inside and out and Mark is super helpful and very kind. We had a great time and would love to come back.

We only had 2 nights at this beautiful place but will definitely be back for more! We were met by Mark who helped us with our bags and gave us a thorough run through about how everything works. We then spent 2 idyllic days enjoying the peace and quiet! Such a beautifully decorated cottage with absolutely everything we could've needed, and the added bonus of swimming and kayaking right on our doorstep was the cherry on top! Fabulous hosts, Mark and Andrea ... we are so grateful to have spent this time at their beautiful cottage.

Liked the idea of a cabin and the interior looked really interesting

Stayed for 2 nights in July, last minute as our Italy trip was cancelled due to covid- this made up for it and we had a lovely anniversary by the water- sunbathing, kayaking and swimming.

We had the most amazing stay at the Riverside. Beautiful location, right on the river with plenty of activities: a row boat, kayaks and of course being able to go swimming! There was also a well equipped kitchen and a BBQ which we used a few times - it was amazing to enjoy outdoor cooking and sunset dining!

The Riverside was lovely. Being right on the water and next to the lock was so special! So many amazing walks right outside the door, and such an opportunity to connect without the distractions of WiFi. A king size bed made it extra special watching the sunset from the bedroom on our last night. Such an unique space, huge windows and an artistic use of wood really bring the natural world inside. It’s really cosy! You definitely feel like you’re on your own overlooking the water. We head into Ripley via the scenic route through the woods, had some delicious food in town, and bought some high quality produce at the farm shop. Our dog Rhia had a blast she loved our adventures along the swimmable lake nearby, and on Papercourt Farm. Andrea and Mark provided dog bowls which is a brilliant touch! We can’t wait to book again.

Mark and Andrea have the most perfect hideaway cabin on the River Wye. We lost ourselves in nature! Being able to pull back the doors and step out onto the river bank with swans gliding by really offered something truly unique. We loved being able to have a go at Kayaking and pottering about in the rowing boat. Thank you for hosting us.

We had a lovely relaxing time at The Riverside. Andrea was very helpful, the waterside location opposite a nature reserve is superb and the cabin is spacious, practical and beautifully furnished.

The location of The Riverside is magical, walking down the canal path you reach a small grassy bank with a few cabins on it surrounded by water either side. Walking into the space you are greeted with full views of the river from the large doors and windows leading out to your own private garden. Sit outside and read a book or borrow the rowing boat and inflatable canoe and explore the waterways! An amazing retreat just 45 minutes from London.

What a beautiful, cosy escape from reality

An adventure, living off grid but Riverside well equipped for keeping us warm and fed. An attractive location near the canal and lock with various pubs in walking distance. Very restful

It was very peaceful there. Felt very much away from it all

We absolutely loved The Riverside and our hosts were amazing.

Amazing long weekend with my partner, brilliant place to relax and kick back, or be as active as you like. We appreciated the arts and crafts pieces that have been used in the space to decorate. The views over the water from the terrace and the bed were mesmerising.

just what was needed, on the edge of the river sandwiched between a river and canal , ment that could do plenty of walk options and delight in nature. Able to slow down and really relax and recharge

We absolutely loved our getaway - perfect escape with our young daughter and dog.

Absolutely magical, the Riverside is a gem and the communication from Andrea and Mark was exceptional. I could not recommend anywhere more highly. The setting is just magical in between rivers and the house itself has been so lovingly and stylishly put together. Came wait to come back.

Mark met us to walk us to Riverside. He couldn’t have been more helpful. It was right on the river and absolutely magical. The locks, the walks, the barges, the cows, the view…. Simply spectacular

Lovely little place to stay. Extremely cosy with the fire lit! Great just to sit by the river and watch wildlife go by.

A wonderful relaxing and peaceful few days. Great weather and long days allowed us to make the most of the waterside setting, fire pit and BBQ. Did lots of local walks and enjoyed sitting by the water, watching the wildlife

We had an amazing and relaxing stay at The Riverside. The peace and tranquility it provided through being able to sit back and watch the ducks and swans go past on the river gave us a great opportunity to disconnect from everything else for the weekend.

A lovely get-away, peaceful and secluded

We had a lovely few days in this georgeous hideaway beside the river Wey. It was fabulously off- grid - and worked absolutely fine, and the bedroom overlooking the river was really lovely.

We had a relaxed, comfortable, peaceful time and the dogs loved it too. Facilities were good, location fantastic and the wild water swimming each day right in front of our accommodation was awesome.

We had a couple of really relaxing days here swimming and paddling up the river, watching the birds and enjoying the wood burner.

Absolutely fabulous! Peaceful, beautifully decorated and could see ducks from my bed. What more could you ask for! Hosts were incredibly helpful and very welcoming.

Staying at the Riverside was a home away from home. The location was perfect (both in terms of getting there from London and also the surroundings), it was really comfortable, and had everything that was needed for a long weekend.
