Overview
Ed and Vicky found an old abandoned cowshed in 2014 and decided they wanted to live in it. A few years later their smallholding dream is coming true. The dramatic reconstruction of their house featured on Grand Designs and now pigs, chickens and ducks roam free on the land around the kitchen and studio where they smoke their own meat and run cookery courses.
The homely cabin sits at the top corner of the farm with lovely views down the Axe Valley, and a bed that boasts valley views through the perfectly-placed window. A simple setup lets you sink into rural life in gentle comfort: a wood-burning stove for the more patient chef, but gas hobs for a quick cup of tea; an ensuite bathroom with a hot drench shower but no WiFi or TV to break the peace. The animals on site are rotated around different fields including the one in front of your cabin, so they'll likely be visiting you in The Gardener’s Shed or perhaps even temporarily living nearby!
A large part of the joy of The Gardener’s Shed is feeling connected to the local area. A fifteen minute walk will take you down to the local pub, but you can also arrange to hang out with Ed and Vicky for dinner. You can join Ed for classes in outdoor cookery, get involved in one of the lively social supper nights up at the house and even end up joining the pig club, in which Ed and Vicky will raise a piglet for you and send you all the meat when it’s ready. The option is always there to simply laze at the shed and watch the world (and the animals) go by, but whatever you do here, you’ll go home happier, healthier, but probably just a little heavier.

Meet Ed and Vicky
On the hunt for a place where they could build a self-sufficient home and business, Ed and Vicky stumbled upon a derelict cow shed with land and an incredible view. Leaving London and undertaking the conversion project themselves, their journey was featured on Grand Designs in 2015, and Mello View was born. Built by Ed's own hands and made of cob and reclaimed materials, it is now their off-grid homestead, providing them with space to run their catering and supper club business, as well as a Pilates studio for Vicky's classes and retreats. They rear their own livestock on the land and grow vegetables and herbs to go into the menus they create as part of their business. With a young son and another baby on the way, Ed and Vicky have truly made Mello View their home.
Wildlife & environment
The Gardener's Shed is surrounded by wildlife. In addition to the Farm's livestock, the property is home to deer, woodpeckers, barn owls, bats and a wide variety of songbirds and birds of prey. The pond attracts dragonflies, newts and frogs. Because Ed and Vicky maintain Mello View using organic methods, the wildlife is abundant and carefully conserved. There is an ancient hedgerow just behind the Gardener's Shed, which makes for seasonal foraging, and wild mushrooms crop up in the pastures. In the views across the valley, you can often spot buzzards and kestrels hunting in the landscape.

We had a wonderful time staying in the Gardener's Shed. Ed treated us to some freshly butchered steaks from one of his cows and endless vegetables from his kitchen garden. We were even treated to a dog for the weekend. It's a special place to stay!

We stayed for two nights in the Gardener's Shed, the location was amazing - natural pond to swim in, fantastic views. The cabin itself is beautiful and tranquil, lovely finish (soft bedding, lots of pillows, excellent shower, great decor, loved the crockery etc) so it all felt very special and just what we were looking for. We took advantage of the other offerings at Mello View and booked an afternoon with Ed where we cooked 5-6 dishes over an open fire after exploring the gardens and veggie patches to pick our ingredients. It's not cheap but a wonderful experience that we got a lot out of and would recommend. I also had a 1-1 pilates class with Vicky which I loved and has introduced me to a new type of exercise that I plan on continuing. Two really lovely hosts and we enjoyed learning about how Mello View came to fruition, and future plans.

The Gardeners Shed is pure escapism, a hand crafted, well equipped and comfortable cabin overlooking a beautiful rural valley. The hosts, Ed and Vicky were very friendly and welcoming and encouraged us to enjoy their five acres of rustic charm. It’s a very relaxed environment, not a highly manicured holiday destination, more like a natural countryside experience where mown paths run through long grass and wild areas. We thoroughly enjoyed meeting the various animals and observing the numerous insects and birds. Their lovely dog (Bumble) adopted us for most of our stay and Ed was happy to share his experience of developing their house, small holding and businesses, (they also host events). The weather was incredible but it would be equally enjoyable when the sun is not shining as the cabin is a very cosy place to watch all the seasons pass by. To top off our experience, Ed, who is also an experienced and talented chef served us a delicious meal which we ate whilst watching the sun go down sitting at the table outside the Gardeners Shed. Thanks to Ed and Vicky for a wonderful stay….Highly Recommended!

We had an amazing two night stay in the Gardeners Shed. Wonderful hosts, facilities, views and experience.

Ed and Vicky have created a quirky, quaint and truly magical cabin. The views are stunning and it it really is a place to rest, unwind and watch the beautiful wildlife on your doorstep. We spent a couple of nights here with our dog and the cabin provided everything we needed and was comfortable and cosy. There's no TV or Internet so bring some cards and games to play in the evening. There's also a freshwater pond to take a dip in which was fun. I would highly recommend this wonderful hidden gem for a lovely peaceful and restful break.

We had a wonderful time at The Gardeners Shed. It’s such a peaceful place with an incredible view. We loved the simplicity of it all. The shed is well equipped and very comfortable with everything you need for a short stay.

Absolutely loved it, bit apprehensive - out of our comfort zone -(in our 70's) BUT what a brilliant experience which we'll be repeating
21/09/2022Paul
We had the most relaxing stay at The gardeners Shed! We combined our first wedding anniversary and baby moon get away and we are so glad we chose there. We had everything we needed for a cute cosy stay with the dog!
04/09/2022Amy
The stay was amazing and genuinely gave me and my family a "drop-jaw" moment when we first witnessed the cabin and the view. The hosts Ed and Vicky were so accommodating and even got our daughter involved with feeding and caring for the animals which she took with pride. Ed and Vicky were there if we needed them and that's all we needed. The food that was produced by Ed was out of this world and the fact that we could help ourselves to fresh fruit and veg on the property was considerably generous.
31/08/2022Luke
We had a brilliant time, the cabin is beautiful and the views are amazing. The resident dog who visited us every day was a lovely addition to the stay and my daughter loved feeding the animals and picking veg from the garden.
29/08/2022Scarlett
We had a wonderful relaxing stay.
13/06/2022Liz
We had the most relaxing and beautiful stay in The Gardener's Shed. We were so welcomed and comfortable, wanting for absolutely nothing. We could have stayed looking at the view all year!
01/04/2022Sophie
Honestly cannot thank Ed and Vicky (the hosts) enough for such a wonderful stay. The amount of work that has gone into the farm is incredible and something they should both be extremely proud of. The Gardeners Shed was more than expected and with my partner previously being an interior designer, she loved every inch of it. We will hopefully be spending some time in the summer back there
25/02/2022Ben
We had an amazing few days in the shed. The location and setup were spot on. Ed was so friendly and helpful, all the extras (eggs fresh from the chickens etc...) were very welcome...

Great place to stay. We thought it might be chilly in November, but it was a cosy cabin. Fantastic countryside views - just what we needed.
01/11/2021Kate
We have just returned from two very relaxing nights at The Gardener's Shed.
26/10/2021Kate
We had a brilliant stay. The Garden Shed was perfect for our family with 2 and 3 year old girls who loved the farm animals and were very excited about sleeping in the bunks bed. The "Shed" was beautifully decorated, full of rustic charm and was very comfortable, thanks to the exceptionally cozy beds and fire. It was the best to lounge in bed with the curtains open, admiring the amazing views across the valley, especially when it was a bit grey outside. We were made to feel very welcome. Vicky and Ed (and Bumble the dog who our daughters fell in love with) were available if we needed anything but they also gave us privacy, the perfect level of hosting. Ed gave us some excellent recommendations for woodland walks with the best trees for climbing and a delicious Sunday lunch at a nearby pub. All in all we had a very special and memorable weekend staying at The Garden Shed. Thank you.
25/09/2021Hannah
Lovely and quirky hut, away from it all. Stunning views! Very quiet with only the sound of sheep, chickens and geese. Friendly owners. Bumble de dog is adorable. Kitchen is well equipped for cooking easy meals. The plates/cups from a local potter is a nice touch, so is the soap in the bathroom. Lovely view from the bedroom with nice bedding. Village with well stocked community shop within walking distance.
13/09/2021Lies
It was wonderful. Such a special, beautiful spot made all the more special by the lovely welcoming owners Ed and Vicky, and their gorgeous assortment of friendly animals. The shed itself has been built and designed with so much care and attention and it's quite simply perfect. It's beautiful, cosy and wonderfully equipped, there's even an outside day bed where you can lounge and soak up the incredible 190 degree views. It's an incredibly peaceful and relaxing spot. Ed and Vicky wouldn't have been more welcoming and encouraged us to help ourselves to fresh veg from their stunning garden. We also helped feeding the animals which we loved, and we both fell in love with Bumble the dog. Lots of lovely walks, pub and towns nearby. Could not have asked for more, and already planning a return visit!
18/08/2021Sophie
Investment every second of my stay, the hut had been totally rebuilt since the last time I stayed but it was beautiful and well thought out and stylish. I love the view from the bed and the peace and quiet there which is what made me come back again this time. The hosts are lovely people too, so laid back and relaxed - a friend joined me for 1 night last minute and they didn't charge extra, you can help yourself to the veg in their beautiful garden and they respect your space but are happy to chat if you want. I spent my time reading on the deck, playing with their dog and taking myself off for long walks in neighbouring Dorset....so we'll located.
15/08/2021Liat
Dreamy!! It was everything we were looking for: super comfy bed with beautiful bedding, amazing views, friendly hosts, gorgeous space, divine outdoor day bed for afternoon naps. Top tip - find the milkshake shack down the road!!
23/07/2021Julia
Wonderful stay, the shed was incredibly cosy with a beautiful view. We did the cooking course which I can't recommend enough, Ed was so knowledgeable and the food was delicious. Bumble the dog was also lovely.

The perfect place to relax and celebrate a birthday. Vicky and Ed are lovely hosts and the shed is a real find. Hours spent relaxing on the awesome day bed taking in the perfect view while chickens, geese, cows and sheep wander around! Bliss

I just cannot find all the words to describe how fabulous our stay was ... the cabin was beyond expectations, amazingly quirky and unique and you are almost living amongst the farm animals ! My daughter was facilitated and loved it so much cried on the way home ..... I can’t wait to go back
02/06/2021Michelle
We had a wonderful stay at the Gardeners Shed. The property has been very well designed and allows for a comfortable and intimate stay surrounded by nature. The views and surrounding area are so beautiful you almost don't want to tear yourself away. But when you do there are lots of lovely walks and nice villages and pubs in the local area to enjoy. Ed and Vicky were lovely hosts, and helpful and accommodating to few mishaps we had! A really lovely experience and sad we didn't stay for longer!
29/05/2021Saskia
We had the best weekend at the gardeners shed, a small farm with fantastic views and free ranging animals literally on your doorstep. Beautiful rural location with a short drive to lots of places of interest. Super friendly hosts plus their dog bumble also friendly, they were fantastic in communicating before arrival and also extremely helpful and welcoming on arrival. We can't wait to come back!
21/05/2021Emma
Absolutely loves our 2nd time staying at the gardener's shed, now it's been extended we had the chance to take our 2 year old who thoroughly enjoyed our 'little house'. We cooked for 2 nights of our stay as most restaurants were shut and the shed was a joy to prepare a meal in with all the essential equipment and utensils needed. We picked our own eggs from the hens and veg for from the garden for our breakfast and fed the pigs our leftover food scraps. A lovely place to stay with kids and lots to do in the surrounding towns.
17/05/2021Georgia
It was incredible. We had a lovely time, the shed, the view, the location was all perfect. I came home feeling completely relaxed and reenergised. A really great holiday.

We had a wonderful stay at The Gardener's Shed - it had everything we needed for a few days away, very comfortable, and the setting and view were absolutely amazing. Having access to the beautiful vegetable patch was great, and we loved having the animals nearby. Would highly recommend.

Had such an idyllic, peaceful time at the Shed. Ed and Vicky have built something really special. They are super friendly and open and were happy for us to explore the garden and help ourselves to the AMAZING vegetables. We also had the added bonus of Bumble the dog keeping us company.

We had a wonderful stay at the gardener's shed. It was just what we needed to get away from work. Big open fields to breathe in and feeling very welcome by vicky and Ed and their dog Bumble. The accomodation was beautifully decorated and filled with quality not quantity. We loved waking up to the sound of cows and managed to squeeze a travel cot in with us so we could all be together. We also had some great restaurant recommendations and local walks. Came home feeling refreshed and inspired

We had the most relaxing stay at the The Gardener's Shed, the views are truly increadable and we were made to feel so welcome! Vicky and Ed made us feel very welcome couldn't have done more. The Gardener's Shed had everything we needed with a very comfortable bed, powerful little log burner and storage under the bed.

Our stay at The Gardener's Shed at Mello View was a lovely break. The view over the valley is gorgeous, and the shed is on a piece of land with different animals, there are cows that can come right up to the deck, and pigs, and chickens and geese are free to roam around where they like during the day. In the morning we collected freshly laid eggs for breakfast. It's a beautiful and cosy cabin, entirely off grid, without having to sacrifice any comforts.

We had a lovely get away for my partner's birthday. It was very peaceful, fantastic views, very cosy and we drove to local places for some site visiting/walks. We also enjoyed having Bumble and Flea come and say hello in the mornings (two of their dogs). Lovely views while cooking on the BBQ and Ed showed us some bits we could pick for a salad from the Garden. The weather did get the best of us on some days but we lit the fire and just enjoyed a cosy night in.

The food that was produced by Ed was out of this world and the fact that we could help ourselves to fresh fruit and veg on the property was considerably generous.

We had a brilliant time, the cabin is beautiful and the views are amazing. The resident dog who visited us every day was a lovely addition to the stay and my daughter loved feeding the animals and picking veg from the garden.

We had the most relaxing and beautiful stay in The Gardener's Shed. We were so welcomed and comfortable, wanting for absolutely nothing. We could have stayed looking at the view all year!

We have just returned from two very relaxing nights at The Gardener's Shed.

Thank you.

The perfect place to relax and celebrate a birthday. Vicky and Ed are lovely hosts and the shed is a real find. Hours spent relaxing on the awesome day bed taking in the perfect view while chickens, geese, cows and sheep wander around! Bliss
