Overview
This classic cabin has been lovingly created by owner Andrew over his many years at Highgates Farm. It’s a clear and simple space of mellow, natural colours and warmth from the large round wood burner. The king size bed is at the back and your lounge/kitchen with hobs and oven to the front, with the en suite bathroom just off the main space. Outside you’ll find the electric hot tub waiting for you to soak and steam until all your stress is gone. You may wonder how the name The Firkin Ferret came about - when Andrew was young he kept ferrets but one day he lost the male ferret, the hob. After a few days, he was found alive and well in an empty cider barrel. As luck would have it, a half size barrel, called a Firkin. From then on, the hob was renamed ‘Firkin Ferret’! As the cabin has a cider-making theme being next to the farms cider press, The Firkin Ferret was born. There are a couple of farm buildings through the trees to your right and about 150m off is another space, the Nancy Blackett, but you’ll feel completely private as you sit by the fire pit late at night under the stars, toasting marshmallows and listening to the sounds of the surrounding woodland and nature reserve.
Those sounds could be anything from otters and badgers to herons, kingfishers and a host of other creatures that thrive here. If you fancy even more animal encounters, head over to Steart Marshes or the wilds of Exmoor for bird spotting or to meet the ponies. There are great days out to funky Glastonbury, the craggy Cheddar Gorge and the caves of Wookey Hole, as well as a host of lovely walks where you can finish with a pint at a traditional local and some fine home cooked food. In season (October/November) you can make your own cider, but at any time of year you’ll be able to sample the local brew and get another real taste of the lovely countryside around you.

Meet your hosts
Meet Andrew, Sam & family
Andrew has been farming at Highgates for most of his life and also runs a forge, but it was his brother, Richard Lee from shepherd’s hut experts Plankbridge, who crafted the Nancy Blackett. They chose the name after the adventurous and creative character in Arthur Ronsome's 'Swallows and Amazons'; a story of an idyllic era, of endless summer evenings and the beauty of youthful imagination. It suits the set up very well indeed. Their latest creation, The Firkin Ferret, was named after a loved pet ferret who was found in a cider barrel after going missing for a few days.
Wildlife & Environment
Highgates Farm operates as a private nature reserve and part of the farm is a protected county wildlife site. Otters, herons, kingfishers, and badgers are regular visitors, so it pays to keep your eyes peeled, especially at dawn and dusk. The Nancy Blackett itself takes pride of place upon an island in a well-stocked carp lake, whilst The Firkin Ferret is positioned on the edge of the nature reserve.

Our guests say...
Alison
It was very relaxing, the hosts were VERY helpful, especially when they tried to help us jump start the car when the battery was flat and let me use the freshly cleaned bathroom when I needed to use as we waited for The AA. They were very rescpectful of our privacy during our stay, they even left us a bottle of fizz and some party poppers for NYE. The cabin was cosy, peaceful and set with beautiful views.
30/12/2024Claire
Absolutely lovely cabin, everything you could need for a quiet getaway! The kitchen was stocked with everything you could need. Lovely touches were added like farm fresh eggs and milk. Hot tub is excellent nice and big and stays hot for ages even when it’s cold outside. We loved the pig! The only thing I’d say is if you want to watch films etc download them on a laptop or tablet, because there’s not much signal and no wifi. Would definitely recommend and come again.
18/12/2024Maisie
A lovely 4 days retreat before the Christmas rush - relaxed mornings watching the wildlife from the cabin window at sunrise, days full of walks of exploring local Somerset towns and tasting the great local produce, followed by relaxing evenings in the hot tub and around the wood burning stove.
25/11/2024David
The whole time we spent there was a delight. So relaxing and the wildlife and privacy was just what we needed. We had a fantastic time. Highly recommended.

Lovely stay, easy to find and everything we needed. Lot's of wildlife around (we even had a little hedgehog say hello while we used the fire pit one evening) The hot tub was a bonus too.
30/08/2024Kirsty
It was really easy to find, the hosts gave great location details. The accommodation was perfect, so relaxing with the hot tub & different outside seating area & a huge firepit.

I booked this stay for my husbands birthday, we both have busy lives and wanted a peaceful relaxing weekend. It was the perfect weekend it was peaceful surrounded by nature, and great location. The cabin was clean and comfortable, the jacuzzi was easy to use and the firepit was nice in the evenings.

Myself and my husband stayed at the Firkin Ferret for our honeymoon and it couldn't have been more perfect. It was exactly what we were looking for, the cabin was so cosy and comfortable and it was a lovely touch to have local cider, fresh milk in the fridge and the owners even left a bottle of prosecco and truffles to welcome us. On site it was so quiet, only the sounds of birds, sheep and turkeys and the pig just by the cabin was so sweet Relaxing in the hot tub at night looking up and watching bats flying around was magical. We are planning on returning for our first wedding anniversary Highly recommended to anyone who wants a quiet getaway and be off the grid for a few days.
29/07/2024Claire
We had an amazing stay. The cabin was perfect. Well equipped, serene location and beautifully decorated.

12/07/2024Laura
Partner and I had a great stay at the firkin ferret. The cabin was well equipped with everything we needed and was nice and cosy. The hot tub was relaxing and the fire pit was great for roasting marshmallows. The signal is very hit or miss in the cabin but it was nice to be able to switch off and relax. We visited Clark’s Village which was great for shopping and a walk around. The stay was great and would definitely recommend.
10/07/2024Dani
We loved our stay at Firkin Ferret. The house was gorgeous and the location was so peaceful and beautiful. We really enjoyed using all of the facilities provided for the house, including the cooking fire, hot tub and lovely treats. Would definitely book again!

29/05/2024Judy
Our stay was quite, peacefully & just what we needed, the cabin was very clean & when we arrived they provided milk, tea & coffee which I thought was a sweet thing to do afert our 3 hour drive.
13/05/2024Maria
My wife and I have stayed at the Firkin Ferret for a weekend last year. This year we decided to visit again and have a quiet few days away. The place is very quiet and afforded a few days rest. It is a good place and a hub to venture out on day trips which we did to a number of the towns around and s visit to the Fleet Air Arm museum.
10/05/2024Ken
The cabin was beautiful, cosy, and really well-presented. The wood burner made it nice and warm; a perfect place to sit and read. The kitchen was clean and really well-equipped. The fresh milk and local cider waiting for us were really appreciated. We loved the hot tub and the table by it we could rest our drinks on. We spent time in it chatting, and lying back and reading. I took a lot of pleasure in watching and identifying the many birds, so thanks for leaving the RSPB book in the cabin for us. The bathroom was clean, the toiletries supplied were lovely, and the shower was great. When we had a small problem with the hot water our hosts were easy to contact and resolved it really quickly for us. We had a such a wonderful time relaxing in the countryside, we didn't even have a look around the local area. We couldn't be happier with our little holiday and would recommend it for any couple looking to get away from it all.
22/03/2024Jackelyn
Fantastic stay here 3rd visit will be booking again for next year the location cabin and hot tub were brilliant and very very clean would highly recommend to anyone just wanting to get away from the hustle of normal life 5*****
13/03/2024Lee
Absolutely lovely stay at the Firkin & Ferret. The lodge was spotlessly clean, extremely well equipped with essentials and some added little extra touches such as local soaps, local cider, some marshmallows for toasting, big basket of burning wood, full jars of tea, coffee and sugar and even a little fresh farm milk in the fridge. The hot tub was clean and warm and very inviting after a long local walk.
19/02/2024KAREN
We had a wonderful, quiet stay here in Somerset and loved the homely setting and hot tub. The nearby farm shops supplied us with fresh veg and meats for our stay and there were interesting sites to visit within a hour's drive.
09/02/2024Danielle
My partner and I spent our weekend at the firkin ferret and we were very happy with everything at the lodge. It has the perfect balance of modern and rustic, with the well equipped kitchen, modern bathroom and easy to use hot tub.
12/01/2024Tim
It was fantastic we really enjoyed it, a perfect getaway!
03/01/2024Marianne
The stay was absolutely lovely! It was quiet and so relaxing. Eating all of the wild life around the area was a lovely experience. Everything was clean and tidy.
08/12/2023Becky
It was honestly the best little get away we’ve ever had. We didn’t need for anything. Everything we possibly needed was there waiting for us. It was so peaceful even with it being on a working farm. It was honestly so perfect and we’re already looking at coming back for a little new years treat.
10/11/2023Jade
We stayed in The Firkin Ferret in Glastonbury, the cabin was lovely and felt remote enough to have privacy but also near to the farm in case of any issues. The cabin was clean and very welcoming.
30/10/2023Poppy
What a lovely relaxing stay! The cabin has everything you could want, surrounded by nature. We had an amazing semi off-grid stay, away from our busy life enjoying what Somerset has to offer. The local pub recommendations were amazing!! We ate great food, chilled in the hot tub and cosied up by the fire in the evening. I would definitely love to return in future!
27/10/2023Claire
We arrived and found the place as described. The sat nav got us to the right location and on time. It you want a comfortable place, that's quiet and wish to get away from the stress of life and relax, then I would recommend the Firkin Ferret for a few days away. We shall plan to return, this time for three days.
02/10/2023Ken
We had a lovely stay on the farm. The chalet is delightful and everything we wanted. It was clean, well equipped, quiet and secluded although next to a working farm. The hot tub was perfect and set on a deck so no stones to walk across. All in all highly recommended.
18/08/2023Chris
The cabin was extremely well presented. Very clean . We had complimentary eggs from the farms chickens. Soap and shampoo with fresh towels and robes. Also fresh milk in the fridge from the farm. A bottle of local cider and love heart sweets.. the showers were powerful and hot. And the kitchen was well furnished. The hot tub was perfect and secluded .
11/08/2023Martin
We had the best stay here for my birthday! Such a gorgeous, clean and wholesome space complete with chicken friends to wake up to and hang out with. Although when we arrived we didn’t expect it to be so close to the house, you do feel so tucked away from everything and have personal, private space. We enjoyed all that was offered. The hot tub is spectacularly hot and inviting, easy to access and again so private. The fire pit is cosy and easy to use with plenty of firewood to enjoy for the 2 night stay we had. The weather for August was raining and cloudy which actually made the perfect ambience but this is also a great space for hot summer days with plenty of space at the front of the cabin to sunbathe and relax. The wood burner in the cabin is very easy to use and creates such a gorgeous atmosphere in what is a gorgeous Cabin. Thank you so much Sam and Andrew for this perfect space.
31/07/2023Courtney
What a little slice of heaven! With walks in every direction, and everything you could want and more at the space itself, The Firkin Ferret was exactly what the doctor ordered to recharge our batteries. Stargazing in the hot tub, meditating by the firepit, hanging out with the resident chickens and reading by the woodburner are moments we won't forget! Thank you Sam and Andrew for a fantastic stay.
28/07/2023Raquel
We had a lovely long weekend at the Firkin ferret. We couldn't have asked for better weather. The hot tub was perfect on the warm evenings after cooking round the camp fire
23/06/2023Melissa
The Firkin Ferret was the perfect place for our child free get away, was very peaceful and beautiful, a little slice of heaven! We will most definitely be returning!
12/06/2023Casey
Lovely stay in a very relaxing cabin ☺️
29/05/2023Vittoria
Wow! What an amazing place! Totally out of the way and so peaceful. We got really lucky with the weather, which made our stay even better. Highly recommend staying here. Although if you don't drive make sure you plan taxis in advance as that's the one thing we forgot and then found it impossible to get a taxi at all, Andrew and Sam were very helpful and welcoming, they even went the extra mile with some decorations as we went for my partners birthday, so thank you so so much!
10/05/2023Stephanie
We recently stayed at the Firkin Ferret for a mini moon after our wedding. The cabin was exactly as pictured and was the perfect location for a relaxing break. The hosts even added lovely extra touches as they knew we were just married. The cabin, location and hosts were perfect. Highly recommend.
17/04/2023Alex
We had a very relaxing stay in a very beautiful setting. Very clean and tidy, the hot tub was absolutely wonderful.
14/04/2023Chloe
A really lovely lodge with a beautiful view. The hot tub was brilliant and its set back location made it feel like we were completely hidden away. We loved using the outdoor fire pit. Such a peaceful location.
07/04/2023Nicola
So peaceful
27/03/2023Stephanie
My partner and I had a truly magical couple of days at The Firkin Ferret for his 30th. The cabin was beautiful with a gorgeous wood burner, comfortable bed, well kitted out kitchen and of course that hot tub (we're back at home now and I'm genuinely mourning it)! The cabin feels secluded and we awoke to birdsong each day - all very romantic . I really can't remember the last time I felt more relaxed. On our final night at The Firkin Ferret I proposed to my partner in front of the fire and he said yes. This place will always be special to us. Thank you Andrew and Sam for a memorable stay.
20/03/2023Josh
We had the best stay at The Firkin Ferret. So peaceful and calm. Amazing listening to the birds in the morning
20/02/2023Emily
Great place to stay everything you need to get away and just relax with no interruptions would highly recommend this cabin to anyone wanting a nice break with peace and quiet
15/02/2023Lee
Very peaceful, relaxing holiday. With a very clean, well stocked dwelling. The owner went above and beyond with nice little touches, including; prosecco, valentines sweets, drinks, really cool tray over the hot tub. The hot tub was lush. Real easy break away from it all as no TV or WiFi meant you were locked into your own little world.
13/02/2023John
We had a lovely stay at the Firkin Ferret. The cabin was cosy and well equipped and the location was peaceful. The hosts were great and their recommendations for local places to eat were really useful. The cabin was well situated to either explore or relax and we enjoyed doing both
27/12/2022Becky
Fantastic stay at the Firkin Ferret over Christmas. Although the cabin is reasonably close to the main house, the positioning makes you feel very secluded. Set on a lovely farm, only a 10 minute drive from amenities, the cabin has everything you need for a peaceful stay away. The hot tub was our absolute highlight and soaking in there with the sound of the birds and sight of all the stars was unbeatable. Even a rain and hail shower couldn't make us get out!
23/12/2022Leigh
We had a wonderful stay at the Firkin Ferret. Despite the cold weather it was lovely and warm and Sam and Andrew made sure we had everything we needed. Would highly recommend.
09/12/2022Liz
We had such an amazing time at The Firkin Ferret for our anniversary. It was such a cosy cabin and the little touches like the robes for the hot tub was such a nice touch. We wanted a chance to switch off and be in the outdoors, and we did just that! Despite the rain, we were able to sit indoors with the fire and completely chill out. Couldn't recommend enough!
16/11/2022Hannah
We had a lovely time, what a gorgeous cabin in a great location. So close to cheddar gorge and Glastonbury! The hosts gave us lots of space and was a perfect private retreat to relax from the busy world! Thank you Sam & Andrew!
11/11/2022Connie
The best stay ever.
07/11/2022Siobhan
A really lovely short stay in a cosy pretty cabin. Our friendly hosts left out treats for our stay and made us feel truly welcome like it was our own place. The electric hot tub was perfect for watching the stars and even enjoying the rain! Perfect quiet nights with nothing but the sound of light rain and the nocturnal wildlife. Perfect getaway from modern life!
31/10/2022Dayne
We really enjoyed our stay - peaceful setting and the property was very clean.
21/09/2022Hannah
We had a lovely stay at The firkin ferret, perfect for a of couple days away. Absolutely lovely location and good paths around for a bike ride. Andrew and Sam had provided the basics we needed. Despite less than appealing weather the cabin was lovely and cosy. definitely will be coming back again, Also the cabin felt private and not like we were in someone’s land

We had a lovely stay at the firkin ferret, it was very peaceful and a gorgeous little place to stay. There was a beautiful little area outside with a jacuzzi which we really enjoyed making use of and just down the path a lovely bench to sit on to enjoy the fire pit. I would definitely visit this place again.
20/07/2022Tanya
it was beautiful! amazing location, it was so private and great facilities, would 1000% go again!
13/06/2022Jessie
Super, tranquil and a great memory
01/06/2022Michael
We had an amazing, relaxing weekend and would definitely recommend to anyone wanting a similar experience. The cabin, hot tub and surroundings were excellent, with all the necessary amenities to hand, plus extras that we were not expecting (loved the cider and biscuits). There was plenty of fuel for the log burner (that we didn't need to use) and the fire pit (which we did) and toasted the complementary marshmallows. The nature reserve was an unexpected extra delight and fortunately we brought binoculars along. All in all, a lovely experience that we recommend 100%.
27/05/2022Diane

We had a brilliant stay at The Firkin Ferret, the surroundings were beautiful, the cabin was brilliant and had a back to nature/basics feel but with a bit of luxury! We cooked over the fire both nights, toasted marshmallows and relaxed in the hot tub.

My boyfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Firkin Ferret. The cabin was incredibly clean and tidy and it's definitely well looked after. We made use of the log burner, hot tub and outside firepit and we were also able to cook our meals easily as there was a variety of different kitchen items available. The bed was very comfortable and we found the decor in the cabin very cosy and inviting. We were thankful for the items provided to us such as eggs, marshmallows, cider and milk. Thank you to the lovely owners for opening up such a beautiful and relaxing space.

Firkin Ferret is a lovely well equipped cabin in a beautiful quiet setting on the farm. We loved both the hot tub and the snoring pig!
18/04/2022Linda
What a wonderful stay! The cabin was even more cosy and comfortable than we expected. It was also very clean, and it includes all the basics we needed. We really enjoyed the quietness, the jacuzzi, the wood burner…a very relaxing break. We definitely want to come back.

A lovely stay in a beautiful part of the UK! Cannot fault the cabin it was cosy, comfortable and very clean and felt like a real escape to the countryside.

We had a wonderful two night midweek stay at the firkin ferret and it was just what the doctor ordered. Great lodge, lovely finishing touches from the owners, VERY comfy bed. Great sized hottub and even the rain didn't stop us. Then spent a cosy evening or two playing scrabble over a fire. Lovely! Highly recommend!

I stayed here with my mum to celebrate our birthdays. We had a great stay. We loved the cabin so much that we chose to cook rather then eat out so we could spend our evenings with the fire lit and for a g&t in the hot tub.

We had a lovely stay at The Firkin Ferret, the location is perfect close to two lovely little villages/towns with little independent shops to keep you busy for the day with fabulous food to choose from. Then you arrive back to the cabin away from all the noise, to the sound of birds chirping with a cup of tea in your hands. Perfect little two night break for me and my husband... Happy 2022.
03/01/2022Megan
The Firkin Ferret is a small patch of heaven. Everything is quiet, comfortable and clean. On arrival the cabin was warm and welcoming and the jacuzzi was waiting for us. In the kitchen we found milk and eggs from the farm, tea, coffee, marshmallows and all the essentials. You can cook while you there and if you bring enough food for your stay you don't have to leave the place. The bed in the bedroom with white sparkling sheets was very comfortable , and the shower was big enough to fit two persons once. You don't have TV or signal for Internet but you don't need it as in the cupboard are few games to play and books to read or you can relax for hours I the jacuzzi. I love it and I cant recommend enough.

I hired The Firkin Ferret as a surprise for my Husbands 40th birthday, we wanted peace and quality time together and that’s exactly what we got. The accommodation was absolutely spotless, the cleanest place I’ve ever stayed. There was loads of amazing touches, marshmallows for the fire, flowers, milk & eggs. We loved the hot tub and it was was so peaceful. We cooked our breakfast on the fire and visited the local towns in the day. It truly is beautiful, I would love to to go back!

We had the best time! It was just the perfect place to get away, the cabin was so clean and lots of lovely touches. The hot tub was a dream, we stayed in it and watched the stars come out, perfect!
20/10/2021Melissa
We had a wonderful time staying at the Firkin Ferret. We never actually met the hosts but we had everything that we needed, including welcoming cider, logs fir the stove and milk!
27/09/2021Catherine
Peaceful surroundings to relax and recharge in. We toasted marshmallows on the fire pit to the sounds of owls
03/09/2021Elizabeth
A thoroughly enjoyable stay in a secluded spot without the ties of modern life- no WiFi, no phone signal, no TV…bliss! However, what was a bonus of modern life was the fantastic hot tub just outside the door. Nice little touches on arrival of biscuits, cider and flowers and of course marshmallows to use over the fire pit. Even indulged in a game of scrabble! Kitchen facilities more than adequate as was the bathroom. Even collected a small punnet of sloes to make our own sloe gin at home.
01/09/2021Laurence
This is an amazing place to stay, very quiet and private, the ideal getaway. The lodge is well equipped with everything you need. It is away from all the light pollution and you can see many stars on a clear night.
25/08/2021Michael
Fantastic place very peaceful and 1st class accommodation Host very welcoming and always there should you have any questions Highly recommend for a nice peaceful break

We had the best 3 nights at The Firkin Ferret. The place was lovely, clean & spotless. With a great hot tub & loads of open space.
09/07/2021Gavin
I stayed for two nights at the Firkin Ferret. I stayed by myself. I had the best holiday it was so relaxing and comfortable. I was a bit nervous going away by myself but I honestly didn’t want to leave. The location is perfect and easy to find. My favourite village to visit was Sommerton. The people are so friendly everywhere in Somerset.
07/07/2021Laura
We had the most amazing experience at The Firkin Ferret……. We booked the stay to get away from everyday work life and that’s exactly what we got …….. we were completely left alone …… we didn’t see anyone ….. the farm was quiet enough in the mornings and it was just such a peaceful stay
05/07/2021Kelly
It was glorious! We wanted a break from the hustle and bustle of London, and that is exactly what we got. A cabin tucked away on a farm, that was built with privacy in mind. We had views of nature right from the decking, and our own hot tub next to the cabin. I truly would go back in a heartbeat, it was so relaxing and off the beaten track, perfect for anyone wanting to really escape. I can't stop recommending this place to my friends and family!
30/06/2021Jess
Spending a few hours chatting in the hot tub with just the sound of birds and the wind in the trees reminded me of just what a Canopy and Stars stay is for. Nature, relaxation and reconnecting with each other without a screen in sight. The cabin is very welcoming (just like our greeting from Andrew and Sam) and cosy with a well equipped kitchen and a very comfortable bed. The great British weather did its thing and made May a bit chillier and wetter than normal but this just meant that the wood burner was even more appreciated and the hot tub even more special and warming. I definitely plan to return in the Summer months when you can have the double doors open, sit and enjoy the view and the peace and quiet.

We had a wonderful stay at the Firkin Ferret. It had everything we needed for a cosy long weekend, from an indoor wood burner to outdoor fire pit, ready-to-use electric hot tub, spacious living area for a little cabin, big bed and fully stocked kitchen.
21/02/2025Alison

We loved our stay at Firkin Ferret. The house was gorgeous and the location was so peaceful and beautiful. We really enjoyed using all of the facilities provided for the house, including the cooking fire, hot tub and lovely treats. Would definitely book again!

Our stay was quite, peacefully & just what we needed, the cabin was very clean & when we arrived they provided milk, tea & coffee which I thought was a sweet thing to do afert our 3 hour drive.

It was fantastic we really enjoyed it, a perfect getaway!

We had a very relaxing stay in a very beautiful setting. Very clean and tidy, the hot tub was absolutely wonderful.

A really lovely lodge with a beautiful view. The hot tub was brilliant and its set back location made it feel like we were completely hidden away. We loved using the outdoor fire pit. Such a peaceful location.

Kitchen facilities more than adequate as was the bathroom. Even collected a small punnet of sloes to make our own sloe gin at home.

This is an amazing place to stay, very quiet and private, the ideal getaway. The lodge is well equipped with everything you need. It is away from all the light pollution and you can see many stars on a clear night.

We had the best 3 nights at The Firkin Ferret. The place was lovely, clean & spotless. With a great hot tub & loads of open space.

We had the most amazing experience at The Firkin Ferret……. We booked the stay to get away from everyday work life and that’s exactly what we got …….. we were completely left alone …… we didn’t see anyone ….. the farm was quiet enough in the mornings and it was just such a peaceful stay
