Overview
The large south facing windows of Jakes Place light up the warm and colourful interior, connecting you to the private garden and stunning views of sea, trees and rolling hills. It’s the sort of place, all soft wood, openness and light, that makes you instantly kick off your shoes and walk around barefoot. You can easily spend your time here idling in the main space, with the wood burner, the sofa and a good book on the go. There is a separate double bedroom with views to the sea and a stunning mural, and a bunk room between it and the open plan kitchen dining area. Outside on the deck you’ll find the BBQ and pizza oven and across the garden are your own wood-fired hot tub and sauna, to ease any tension the calming cabin hasn’t already worked its magic on. At night a fire pit on the bank keeps you warm while you take in the breathtaking views.
The whole space is decorated with colour, flair and the souvenirs of Nick and Dolly’s extensive travels, as well as furniture and art made by them both. They’re close by if you need local tips or have any questions, but will leave you to settle into the tranquility of the space. The cabin is down a windy and tree lined path around the back of their house. In the summer months they host pizza evenings where you can join your neighbours from Jackson's Cabin on a Monday for lovely wood fired pizza in the cob oven. Further afield you’ll find miles of coastal paths and trails through stunning Dartmoor, as well as great surfing at Bantham beach, quiet sands at the less accessible Lannacombe and wonderful views at Mattiscombe. If you’ve worked up an appetite and the pizza oven or BBQ don’t tempt you, then take your pick of the many local pubs and restaurants serving everything from fine cuisine to simple, hearty food by the fireside.

Meet your hosts
Meet Nick
Nick, is an experienced wood-smith, and Dolly, an artist. Nick has been a furniture designer/maker and has always dried his own wood in his woodshed and uses local hardwoods and naturally fallen trees wherever possible. He built the cabin himself, and fitted out the interior using reclaimed wood, and artefacts from Mexico such as the copper sink in the bathroom.
He uses traditional and green woodworking skills to help and teach people to create their own furniture in his fully fitted workshop. Dolly paints portraits and landscapes. She is also a cook, and cooks and facilitates on the core programs at Embercombe, a centre for environmental change and inspiration outside Exeter. She runs workshops from her studio known as The Creative Being Workshops which are central to the programs that she and Nick are developing.
They used to live in Mexico, where two of their three children were born, and developed a love of the land, and of working with their hands, that planted the dream to one day have a patch of earth to call their own. Now they do and seem determined to make the most of it!
The core of The Brake is the original 1909 bungalow, which Nick & Dolly have extended and embellished, while trying to remain true to it in style. Around it an apple orchard has grown up, a pond teeming with life has been dug, and the beech trees which surround it seem to protect it from any outside interference.
Wildlife & environment
The Brake is on the edge of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Views look out towards Start Point Lighthouse and the sea. There is also a vegetable garden – help with this is always welcome!

Emma
We had a lovely weekend. The cabin is beautiful. A great place to unwind.

We had a wonderful stay at Jake’s Place. Everything was just as described and all in perfect working order. We spent four nights there and explored the nearby areas, including Totnes and Dartmouth. We enjoyed using the hot tub and claw-foot bathtub, as well as the wood burning stove when the nights were chilly.
07/10/2024Samantha
We had a great stay with Nick and Dolly. The place was so relaxed and perfect for us and our two energetic small children. Our son has additional needs and he found the environment really comfortable.

We absolutely loved our stay at Jake’s Place! It was the most relaxing retreat, with so much to enjoy without even leaving the front gate. The glorious view out to sea from the bench, with a warming fire pit for late evenings watching the stars; the hot tub and sauna; the comfortable deck chairs in the privacy of the tranquil garden; the wood fired pizza oven, barbecue, and outdoor table and chairs for fun dining al fresco. In addition, there were so many thoughtful touches: crisp and cool - high thread count sheets on a very comfortable bed; soft, luxury towels; a well equipped kitchen with complimentary tea, coffee and condiments; a fresh bunch of flowers on arrival. The unique design features and artworks inside added to the feeling that we were staying somewhere very special. When we could bring ourselves to leave, it proved to be an excellent location for exploring South Devon.

Jake’s place is a little bit of magic in south Devon. Situated on a hill you get a quite unbelievable view from the bottom of the private garden. The wood fired hot tub, sauna and pizza oven make fun fabulous and mindful times for relaxation and recharging. The house is unique and beautiful, decorated and furnished with style and love it’s the perfect place for a relaxing break or holiday. We both felt welcomed and relaxed within hours of arrival, and we were reluctant to leave this charming place.
24/05/2024David
An absolutely lovely space to stay. We managed to stoke the hot tub, sauna and wood burner despite the pouring rain on the first night. Very welcoming hosts but not intrusive, we will be back.
26/04/2024Richard
We couldn’t have asked for more! Nick & Dolly were fantastic hosts, useful tips to light the wood burner which was roaring away when we arrived. The hot-tub & sauna are a lovely addition & we made use of both . The cabin has everything you could need for a relaxing break away. We enjoyed a game of chess & loved all the personal hand crafted touches, design, woodcraft & art . A fabulous area to explore despite having some wet & wild weather we still managed to get & visit some local beauty spots. Would highly recommend & we will definitely be back sometime soon

We have been back to Jakes place a few times now since we first discovered it back in 2015 and it never disappoints. It is just such a delight to sit back relax in the unique and beautifully crafted log cabin but also in easy reach of the lovely towns Salcombe, Totnes and Dartmouth for ventures out. The cabin itself is airy and bright and well equipped and comes with the real treat of sauna, hot tub and wood fired pizza oven. And special thanks to Nick and Dolly who are always so welcoming. The biggest compliment I can pay Jakes place is that it still holds a magical appeal for my now teenage daughters.

It was truly wonderful.

We had such a wonderful time at Jake’s Place, beautifully decorated and set out with a cosy wood burner in an idyllic setting. The hot tub and sauna was such a lovely addition and the hosts were so accommodating with ensuring that we had everything we needed for a great break.
26/01/2024Jessica
What a wonderful, wonderful holiday. Beautiful location with views down to the sea, private, wonderfully green but in the perfect location for us to take our toddler to the local attractions. Jake's Place is a beautiful building made with creative and thoughtful design and wonderful little personal touches like the gorgeous chess board, mosaic kitchen and rustic wooden furniture and fittings. Nick and his family were kind warm and generous hosts. We loved the hot tub (and morning family warm tub!) sauna and having a family pizza night was one of our highlights. The shower was great and the beds were really comfy. We didn't want to leave and will certainly enjoy coming back one day!

We have used Canopy and Stars before but this was by far our best experience to date. The two cabins are unique due to Nick and Dolly's practical and artistic skills. You really feel you have been transported out of your everyday environment to somewhere special - a place to unwind, a haven. The cabins were ideal for our extended family as we occupied both cabins and therefore were the only holiday-makers on site. It felt very private and it was nice that each cabin had its own private garden. Although the cabins feel very centred in their natural environment, you still have all modern conveniences, such as a flush toilet, hot shower and fully equipped kitchen. Nick and Dolly were always on hand to help out without ever being intrusive.

My husband booked Jakes Place for my 50th birthday. We visited with our two girls and dog. From the moment we arrived, we absolutely fell in love with the place. It is utterly charming, cosy and beautifully put together. The delightful owners have made every inch of Jakes Place a gem. The woodfired hot tub was such an amazing treat, sitting under the stars, toasting marshmallows in the firepit and cosying up un front of the woodburner made every moment magical. Our girls loved it and we had a very special time together away from the busyness of everyday life. The small things that are sometimes overlooked were spot on at Jakes Place, beautiful bed linen and bedroom, the best night's sleep we've had in a long time, the roll top bath with beautiful sented bath products...who needs a 5 star hotel, this is so much better..a magical memory and can't wait to come back.
30/06/2023Louise
We had a really lovely time at Jake’s place which was very comfortable and well equipped. Beautiful private surroundings with a lovely view. Loved the wood fired hot tub and sauna as well as the pizza oven.
26/06/2023Alex
We had a wonderful stay at Jake's Place - we loved the privacy and the fabulously characterful cabin with lovingly crafted wooden touches everywhere. The children were very excited about the 'tree' bunkbed and the huge wooden window frames with no glass between their bedroom and the bath. The garden was perfect to run around in and once the children were in bed we had some lovely evenings looking out at the view with the fire pit lit and sitting in the hot tub. Everything was high quality and really comfortable. A real tonic for the soul. Easily accessible to the wonderful Blackpool Sands beach with fabulous cafe and lovely river running along the side of the beach and into the sea. Dartmouth, the ferry crossing and the steam train to Paignton was also a fun day out. We'll definitely be back.
19/05/2023Ruth
Wonderful quaint stay at Jakes Place, private garden, plenty of indoor room, great view and so close to brilliant beaches/towns
15/05/2023Josh
We wanted to book a break away to celebrate my husbands birthday with our two adult daughters. We had a great time with none of the usual distractions. Lovely walks and pretty places to wander round in near by Dartmouth and Totnes as well as other villages. Lots of opportunities for swimming despite the cold! Having the sauna and hot tub in the garden was a real bonus and we all enjoyed it. This made us feel spoilt with a bit of luxury and lots of fun. The attention to detail in Jakes place is really great. This is such a well insulated place that really does keep warm with one wood burner. Very impressed with this. Beautiful hand made wooden furniture throughout Jakes place. So much skill embedded into every corner of the space we had. Lovely open views from the garden with glimpses of the sea. We went for great walks taking in the beauty of the area and enjoying being together as a family which is a rare thing these days with busy daughters getting on with their lives in London. Very special times.
31/03/2023Sophie
It was a wonderful place to enjoy some peace and quiet, perfect to unwind with the sauna and hot tub. The owners Nick and Dolly were very welcoming and helpful.
15/03/2023Dominic
Jake's Place was a complete tonic. I found the cabin very calming and really comfortable to spend time in. The workmanship is superb and Nick and Dolly's style shines through every aspect of the build. Everything about Jake's Place is quality - from the cabin to the garden to the kinves, crockery, pans and bed linen. The area has much to see and do. We loved our stay.
03/03/2023Jo
We loved the place it was so beautifully constructed with lots of quirky features such as the tree branch that could be used instead of a ladder to climb into the top bunk, kids would love it. We also loved the woodburner, pizza oven and hot tub - which were all wood heated. Nick and Dolly were friendly hosts who made us feel welcome. The cabin was well insulated and warm even in January when the temperature fell below zero. The view across the fields is also really lovely.
30/01/2023Neil
A stay at Jake's Place truly is a home away from home. Nick and Dolly go above and beyond to make you feel as welcomed as possible and encourage you to get stuck in with as much of their own life as you like. Whether it's soaking up the atmosphere at their delicious homemade pizza evenings, a visit to Nick's workshop or even just a chat with Dolly about her art and travels, they are the ultimate hosts and love having the guests stay in the cabins as an extension of their own home. The new hot tub is the perfect way to wind down after a day of chatting and a luxurious spa experience for all.
22/11/2022Ellie, Canopy & Stars
Such a beautiful cabin, had everything we needed and was a fabulous location to explore. The log burner was perfect as it got chilly in the evenings. Views from the garden are stunning and panoramic. We would definitely return, it was idyllic and cosy!
18/11/2022Amy
We had a wonderful weekend at Jake's place! The cabin is beautiful and was equipped with everything we could think of. The views from the garden were also so lovely. We were only there for a short time, but we checked out some of the nearby beaches and walking spots and restaurants that were included in the welcome packet sent to us beforehand. Nick and Dolly were also fantastic. They answered all our questions beforehand, checked in to make sure all was okay once we had arrived, but then also gave us plenty of privacy. It was perfect! They even were so kind as to mail a cap I accidentally left behind. It was a great weekend, and we'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking to explore the area - especially with a four-legged companion! Our dog, Disco, had such a great time and was so comfortable there.

A very relaxed stay in a cute cabin. Perfect to unwind and within short driving distance to some lovely beaches. The Sauna was a lovely treat each evening.
28/03/2022Chloe
Our family of 3 had a brilliant long weekend in the Devon Hills, immersed in nature but in close distance of Dartmouth, Totnes, Brixham and Blackpool Sands. The cabin was beautiful and the amount of love that Dolly and Nick have put into the design of the space is truly impressive and inspiring. The mosaic kitchen worktops were a piece of art, the fireplace was magnificent and the carved chess set a marvel. It was safe (for a 3 year old!), spacious and comfortable. The garden has a bench set with views over the hills and it was totally quiet, except for the birds in the morning!
25/03/2022Maggie
A wonderful stay, which despite it's best effort, wasn't ruined by the incessant rain all weekend! Nick was great. Communicative in the lead up and helped us out after we arrived later than planned due to an accident en route which led to a delay of several hours. The place is ideal for exploring the local area and was lovely and quiet for a great weekend getaway.
10/03/2022Marc
We had a great few days at Jake's Place, it was perfect for us and our two young children, it felt very private and was so quiet and peaceful. It had everything we needed, with the added luxury of the sauna - a real treat! We'd love to go back.
21/02/2022Kate
Jakes place was amazing, it is so quirky and peaceful. Within easy reach of loads of great places and attractions. Would recommend to anyone.
14/02/2022Eddie
We stayed at Jake’s place in the winter and whilst the weather outside was wet and windy we were toasty & warm in the homely, quirky cabin. It was a lovely place for our family of 4 and our dog to spend time together and reconnect. It has all the creature comforts and attention to detail and we loved the sauna. The location was idyllic and so quiet. Our hosts were very lovely people. We took advantage of the woodworking course with Nick who is an excellent teacher and the whole family got to make a stool together which now has pride of place in our home. We will definitely return and next time we’ll take advantage of Dotty’s art course.
11/02/2022Rachel
A relaxing four days in a cosy cabin with privacy, and good places to visit nearby
07/02/2022Mandy
We had a wonderful stay at Jake's place this winter. This cosy cottage is a unique find - beautifully crafted. The sauna was wonderful with the blustery weather outside. We were also pleasantly surprised at how spacious Jake's place was.
27/12/2021Mel
A small little path towards a lovely cabin very bright and cozy with the cold spell. Bunk bed was a favorite with kids 3 & 6 year old and we loved the sauna. Lovely sea views and little garden to run around. Guests very helpful.
26/11/2021Elisa
We had a lovely stay despite the change in weather. We were able to visit the surrounding area, visit some lovely beaches and local pubs but also chill out as a family and spend some much needed quality time together!
25/10/2021Rachael
The most blissful stay! We stayed with our two children for a long weekend and were all very sad to leave at the end of the break! It’s such a beautiful cabin, so cosy and one of the cleanest places we’ve ever stayed in. The ‘tree’ bed was a real hit with our boys and the wood fired sauna was fabulous! Can’t recommend enough!
30/09/2021Martina
We stayed here for 3 nights with our two toddlers. It was a beautiful place and the owners spent time talking to us but weren't intrusive at all. The owner has built the place himself and mostly using traditional building techniques. It was a pleasure to stay at Jake's place and I would definitely consider returning.
23/09/2021Andrew
It was lovely, secluded place with nice views and stylish interior. We specially loved sauna and kids bunk bed
09/09/2021Priit
The property is an amazing tranquil oasis, where we felt very relaxed and cozy looking out over the stunning country views. Lots of opportunities for fires, star gazing and sauna detoxing. Having lazy breakfast in the bright sun drenched kitchen / diner was a highlight for the family. We loved meeting our hosts Nick & Dolly and sharing a fun alfresco pizza evening.
27/08/2021David
Wonderful relaxing place, friendly people and lots to do nearby
13/08/2021Charlie
We are just home from the most magical weekend at Jake's place. As soon as you turn into the drive you're transported to another world, which we were so sad to leave, we immediately booked ourselves in again! We've stayed at a few Canopy & Stars places but Jake's place was by far the best. The setting is stunning and the property is a marvel. The kids loved climbing the tree to bed, my husband loved the sauna & I loved sitting with a glass of wine taking in the view at the bottom of the garden.
09/07/2021Jessica
Gorgeous location and really attractive accommodation, well equipped and perfect.
11/06/2021Stacy
We loved our holiday at Jane’s Place- it’s a fantastic location to explore Devon from, but it’s also a great place to just hang out. Very peaceful and relaxing, beautiful views, greenery and nature everywhere.
21/05/2021Orla
It was lovely, very comfortable, peaceful and relaxing. Loved the fact that the building and interior were all hand built and hand created.
23/04/2021Lisa
We had a wonderfully relaxing stay as a family of three in Jake's Place. The property itself is gorgeous, so lovingly made, maintained to a high standard and very comfortable. The check in and out process was very easy and the owners Dolly and Nick were very welcoming. There are fantastic views from the garden and lots of space for children to run around and explore. The property is well situated to explore lots of local walks, beaches and restaurants by car. We would definitely stay here again.
12/04/2021Ursula
This is a lovely place, built by the owners. It's so comfy and homely - surrounded by wood, with so many thoughtful touches. A lovely bath, comfy beds and fabulous bedlinen. The wood burner heats the whole place incredibly quickly. It has a beautiful view, and is a short drive to amazing coastal walks and the River Dart, so very well placed. It's a lovely place and will definitely go back.
03/11/2020Abigail
Great time staying here for a long weekend, just two of us. Loved the way everything had been fitted out, instantly felt relaxed and as if we were abroad. Enjoyed the wood-fired sauna and log burner in the cabin. The cat was, as described by others, very friendly! Would love to go back...
30/10/2020Robin
We had a lovely and relaxing stay with welcoming hosts and wonderful cat called Tom. The house was full of character which we crave when we go away and this was full of it, beautifully built and decorated. Set in a lovely, peaceful location with beautiful views from the end of the garden it was perfect for us. Although the owners live on site you wouldn’t know anyone else was there once you are in the house. We took full use of the sauna and outside shower and the girls loved the bunk beds and chess set. Wood burner was super efficient and easy to work and the highlight for our girls was Tom the cat who was very friendly and was happy to be picked up and sit by the fire with our children, he even came and knocked at the door! Nick was a lovely host who was friendly and a pleasure to chat too. We’d really recommend this place to couples or with two small children and would happily visit again.
19/10/2020Sophia
Best place we have been to using Canopy and Stars. Incredibly relaxing, beautifully built getaway. Having a private sauna was amazing, and we loved having a wood burner. There is a cat unlike any I have known, he is so ridiculously friendly and calming, having him around was like therapy in itself! The owners are kind and welcoming, it's a stunning area. What more do you want? We'll certainly return.
12/10/2020Daniel
Absolutely loved the cabin, was even better than we expected. Felt so cosy and homely, especially with the log burner going and relaxing after a long walk on the coast, will definitely book again, is a perfect place to explore from and a great place to kick back and chill. Was a nice touch that the stove was lit for us when we arrived too. The cat was funny too, made himself very at home on the couch
02/10/2020Jonathan
This is a gorgeous little gem of a place. It was a heavenly hideaway and is so well designed. Nick was a warm, friendly and interesting host and it was wonderful to stay in his well-designed and crafted cabin. The bedroom for the kids was fantastic and the bath was lovely. We felt like we had total privacy and it was very relaxing. The gardens up to Jake's Place were also beautiful.
25/09/2020Jo
Relaxing, peaceful and idyllic getaway with panoramic views. Perfect host Nick was on hand if needed, and so helpful and knowledgeable about the area, but left us to it to experience Jake's Place in our own way. We especially enjoyed regular visits from Tom the cat.
21/09/2020Valerie
We had a wonderful relaxing time. Nick and Dolly were really friendly and helpful but gave us the space to have a really lovely magical secluded stay. The private gardens with sea on the horizon, the incredibly friendly cat and the beautiful bespoke wood work even down to the chess board made this a really special stay.
10/09/2020Will
We had a wonderful time in the beautiful Jake’s Place. Nick and Dolly were incredibly helpful and welcoming, managing the covid-19 restrictions brilliantly. The most welcoming member of the family was Tom - the cat! He loved the kids and they loved him.
17/07/2020Emma
Jake’s place is an amazing space, with a big sunny garden and view towards the sea. The house was so warm with the wood fire going and the big bath is a great touch! Nick was a really kind host, making sure we were well looked after. We are really looking forward to coming back to do some woodworking when we can! We would highly recommend for a long relaxing weekend. We did walks on both the coast path and in Dartmoor (plus some wild swimming).
21/03/2020Tom
Jake's Place was a little piece of paradise for us. We loved the feel of the place; we loved having indoor and outdoor fire to warm us up; we loved the epic bath tub; our little boy loved endless Lego construction and his tree-bed; we loved being visited by the cat; we loved being so close to the coast (Blackpool Sands - what a lush beach); and we loved that the only sound we could hear was the birds.
01/03/2020Fran
We had a lovely relaxing stay at Jake's Place, being able to get away from the hustle and bustle of normal life, relaxing in the sauna, playing board games, enjoying the tranquility of the beautiful setting and exploring the local area.
19/02/2020Sally
Really relaxing and cosy cabin, has everything you could need to get away and Nick and Dolly are lovely.
12/01/2020Jess
Secluded yet close to several attractions, including the Dartmoor Park
20/12/2019Lada
We had a wonderful stay at Jake's Place, I booked it for my partners birthday and left it a surprise. Safe to say he absolutely loved it! It was everything we needed it to be and more. I'm dreaming of the day we can return! The cabin itself was beautifully decorated and had such a warm and cosy feel to it. Our kids (aged 6 and 4) LOVED the bunk beds and thought the cabin was magical, especially when Tom the cat came by to visit. There were also plenty of games in the larder to play and the beautifully handmade chess board kept them entertained for hours! The kids even surprised us when they told us we could get rid of the TV when we got home. This is the ideal place if you find yourself needing to take a step back and slow down a little. We loved coming back in the evenings, lighting the fire and sitting down to relax with a drink and the radio!
29/11/2019Kirsten
We had 4 days of rain but had a lovely time at Jakes Place, the setting is lovely and the accommodation had everything we needed. There is so much to do close by, just a short drive away. Perfect for children and grown ups too! The tree bed was our sons favourite thing, he wants one at home now! We had a really relaxing few days away, thank you Jakes Place!
21/11/2019Kate
We had a wonderful time in this cosy little cabin and would have loved to have stayed for longer. A great location to explore Dartmouth and the lovely neighbouring coast. Fish and chips on slapton sands and flying the kite, the castle at Dartmouth and Coleton Fishacre were all highlights.
14/11/2019Rob
Very relaxing stay, private garden and hand made cabin with great views. Both the very deep bath and the wood fired hot tub vied to be our personal favourites and Tom the cat joined me for yoga.
20/09/2019Dominic
We had a very relaxing and enjoyable stay at Jake's Place at the end of August/beginning of September. The cabin is very quaint, warm and tastefully decorated. It's well equipped too, with the added bonus of having a wood burner - perfect for those chilly autumnal evenings. The views over the fields and down to the sea are fantastic, and the Finnish wood-burning sauna was an absolute winner. Nick and Dolly are friendly and welcoming hosts, as is their charming cat, Tom, who loved to pay us a visit in the evening and have a nap by the fire. The location is fantastic and there's some spectacular driving around the Devonshire countryside and some great beaches nearby. We would thoroughly recommend staying here, and will likely come back here ourselves in the not too distant future.
30/08/2019Johanna
Great cabin, friendly hosts, nice location, good facilities.
22/07/2019Sebastiaan
We had a lovely peaceful few days at Jakes Place. The cabin was very cosy with wood burner and deep bath and we tried out the sauna. We loved the bench at the end of the garden where you could see the lighthouse and the sea in the distance.
20/06/2019Charlotte
Was the exact location we were looking for
27/05/2019Nick
We loved Jake's Place, it was quirky, cosy and quiet. Great location with lovely views.
08/04/2019Suzy
Jakes place was wonderful. The location was ideally suited to explore Devon. The views across the South Hams fields were stunning, made all the better as the sun streamed in through the windows onto the kitchen table in the morning. The accommodation itself was immaculately presented with comfortable beds and a cosy wood burner.
21/02/2019Peter
We spent a lovely weekend relaxing in this beautiful, cosy cabin. The decor is gorgeous and reflects Nick and Dolly's travels and lifestyle. The views are fantastic and we loved waking up, making a cuppa and taking in the views from the comfy bed. The sauna is also a big bonus and a great way to relax after a busy day - we explored Totnes in the day and had dinner in Dartmouth. Nick, Dolly and family were so friendly and there to help with any questions or queries we had - thank you for a wonderful weekend!
15/02/2019Jennie
Such a relaxing place to stay for a romantic weekend. Although it's big enough for 4, it's cosy enough for 2. Sauna was a real bonus, as was the tour of the wood workshop and seeing Tom the cat.
08/02/2019DANIEL
Wonderful, wonderful few days in this cosy place. Great for exploring the area and for resting up and just looking at the view. We loved it.
01/01/2019Allegra
We had the most blissful half-term break, helped by unseasonably wonderful weather! The cabin couldn't have been more perfect and the views from the end of the garden to the sea were spectacular - this is definitely the place to sit with a drink as the sun goes down. There's so much to do in the area and then, of course, you get to come home to your snug cabin and fabulous sauna. We loved every minute and couldn't have asked for anything more.
22/10/2018Tamryn
Jake’s Place was very comfortable, quirky, homely and adequately equipped for our short stay.
23/09/2018Anna
Excellent - very homely and would be good even in adverse weather.
09/09/2018Andrew
We really enjoyed our stay at Jake's Place. The welcome was warm and the property itself was really inviting. The kids felt immediately at home and didn't want to leave. We enjoyed the opportunity to chill out together as a family and the open plan layout was ideal for this. Location was fantastic for getting out and about in South Devon and we had some great day trips out and about including on Dartmoor.
24/08/2018Sam
We had a wonderful stay at Jake’s Place. Owners Nick & Dolly have created a truly magical place bursting with character. The accommodation is well placed for local attractions. We really enjoyed the acticities on site too including Dolly’s art class and the lovely pizza evening. Our two children said it was the best holiday they have ever been on. We had a superb time.
10/08/2018Neil
Fantastic stay in a beautiful location. Helpful welcoming hosts and a lovely cat came to say hello!
06/07/2018Rachel
We had a wonderful week at Jake's Place, enjoying the location, and also the kindness of Nick and Dolly and family. Jake's Place itself is wonderful - charming and well-equipped with a very pleasant garden and great views.
04/06/2018Claire
We stayed for 4 nights in the cabin with our 5 year old son. He thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful tree bed and we enjoyed the relaxing feel of the place. It was quiet and had a lovely ambience to it.
28/05/2018Jen
On Sunday we barely left the cabin, except to go to the end of the garden and set a fire in the grate so we could stay warm as we sat and stargazed. Just a wonderfully relaxing way to spend a few days.
24/11/2017Chris, Canopy & Stars
Jake's Place is a sweet little cabin in the most idyllic surroundings. The quirky interior makes for quite a magical little space, with the colourful tapestries, mosaic kitchen tiles and a tree branch that acts as the ladder up to the bunk beds. Everything was very clean and tidy and all our basic needs were perfectly met. The beds are very comfortable and the cabin is perfectly warm, especially after spending an evening in keeping the wood burner fed. We indulged in a sauna on our last evening which exactly what the doctor ordered. I would recommend staying to here to anyone. I would love to come back and take part in one of the courses Dolly and Nick run. It's a very inspiring space - perfect for a family getaway, personal retreat or a catch up with friends.
05/11/2017Jennifer
A fabulous cottage in a amazing setting. We had a relaxing weekend and enjoyed the log burner, lovely bespoke furniture, the toys and games, the garden and the giant chess set!
27/10/2017Laura
The three of us had an incredible holiday. The warm hospitality offered by Nick and Dolly coupled with the unique, cozy and child friendly accomodation at Jakes Places means this is certainly a destination I'd have no reservation in recommending.
23/10/2017David
We had a great stay for 3 nights at Jake’s place. I had not worked with a wood burner before and as this is the means this home is heated I was happy that the owner could explain me and now I've learned the basics of making a fire :) The house is very homely, there are loads of special details and you can really see they have put a lot of love into this home. When you get your heating going this is really a comfortable home, with a beautiful bath and a separate bathroom (shower). There’s a very good bed. The inventory is quite complete. There’s a fine garden, unfortunately our weather was not so good as to use it fully. All in all Jake’s a very recommendable place!
18/09/2017Pim
A lovely place in a beautiful setting. The personal touches which have gone into Jakes Place are lovely and the owners are warm and welcoming, whilst at the same time it feels like a very tranquil and private spot.
28/07/2017Sharon
We had the perfect weekend celebrating my partners 30th birthday! Jake's Place had all we wanted and more- a lovely garden, a BBQ, a firepit, the biggest bath and it felt like home from home. Its not far away from Dartmouth and we spent two days walking along the nearby coastline. We even went for a swim! Thanks both, we had a great weekend and would love to come back soon.
30/06/2017Claire
We had a wonderful stay, Nick and Dolly were lovely hosts, warm and welcoming. The cabin is beautiful and you can tell that it was crafted with love, the attention to detail is stunning. We visited with our 3 young children who adored the bunk beds, massive bath and the slide in the garden. We didn't end up using the art room and equipment that Dolly offers but it was a great idea and I imagine if we had stayed a few more days we would defining have used it. We had mixed weather when we visited, but we found a wealth of indoor options to keep the kids entertained, the aquarium in Torquay and Woodlands. We also had a fantastic afternoon at Blackpool sands beach. We would be very lucky if we could come back and stay again.
05/05/2017Charlotte
Lovely cabin, beautiful surroundings and garden. Nice and cosy.
28/04/2017Nicky
We had a wonderful time at Jake's Place which is beautiful and in a stunning location. We loved the relaxed and comfortable cabin and looked forward to returning at the end of our day's adventures to sit by the wood burner and spend time together as a family.
28/03/2017Hannah
We had a beautiful stay at the brake, Dolly and Nick's reception was very warm and welcoming! This place is true tranquillity and such a fabulous find and all our week day stresses were immediately lifted! A great place to explore and so much to offer just at the brake itself, from the views, work shops, chickens, pizza and sauna cabin. We could not recommend this place more, so inspiring! My husband and I did a wood course with Nick, which was great, we learnt lots and came away with a beautiful bench we are very proud of, thank you Nick! Our stay in the cabin itself was just beautiful the views and how well the cabin has been constructed and furnished was impeccable! We would definitely recommend a stay here, a slice of paradise and we hope to be back again!
10/02/2017Hayley
we had a wonderful time. Jakes Place and the views from it are absolutely beautiful. There's not a thing I could think of that would improve it. we spent most of our time at the cabin having some family time playing games games and exploring the garden as well as playing with the super friendly cats. we had a couple of adventures to Totnes and Paignton Zoo. Overall it was just a fantastic weekend
03/02/2017gemma
We had a great time at the cottage and it looked just like on the website and if anything was even nicer! The hosts were very helpful before we arrived, even offering to pick up some shopping for us as we got caught up in traffic on the way down. We much appreciated the fact that unlike so may places you can rent there was only just one notice at the cottage with a 'don't' on it - in the past we've rented places from other companies that had lots of 'don't' notices and I hate that, you feel you can't relax. The whole place here was geared to relaxation e.g. the amazing large bath, comfy double bed, comfy chairs/sofas and soft rugs and just the one 'don't' notice. So relax we did!
02/09/2016Anne
Wood and lots of it,wood sliced skirting boards, wood beams, wood doors, wood arches..beautiful,natural and relaxing.Nick and Dolly have made a true masterpiece in this special place. Its somewhere not just for holidays but somewhere you could live.It makes you want your house to be that more woody and reclaimed. It is an inspiring place to stay! The lighthouse at night, the oak trees dropping their crispy leafs as the sun shines on,the uber comfy beds and bright in day, cosy by night kitchen/dinning room,The carefully chosen pottery and and pieces are all noticeable and lovely to use.Great thought pours from the walls and we enjoyed soaking it all in! The location is fantastic and we experienced so much and ate so well. The kids had the best time and have memories forever I'm sure.
26/08/2016Gemma
Fantastic atmospheric place, with eclectic furnishings and decorations combined with finely crafted buildings and furniture. Warm, welcoming hosts. Terrific location.
19/08/2016Noel
What a wonderful place Nick and Dolly have created. A little haven of peace and tranquility in a beautiful part of the country. The cabin is rustic yet cosy, perfect for someone looking for a back-to-nature experience without having to give up too many creature comforts! Our children (2&5) had a wonderful time sharing the beautiful carved bunk beds, playing in the garden and getting to know the animals. Nick and Dolly host a wonderful pizza night in their bake house. We can see why some guest return year after year. We can see ourselves doing the same!
29/07/2016Zuri
A little piece of tranquility! Fabulous place to stay in a beautiful part of the country!
18/07/2016Kelly
We have stayed at a different canopy and stars place every year for wedding anniversary since we married in 2011. This was the best one yet by a mile. We had the most amazing stay at Jakes place. Its extremely well equipped for a family of four and the location is brilliant. We cannot wait to visit again and have booked to spend Christmas there!
08/04/2016natasha
What a place!! It was so nice to get away from everything and whilst there is a house and other accommodation on the site the setting was so quiet and peaceful.. no Wifi or TV! Nick and Dolly were great hosts and invited us for Pizzas one night with the other family in the other accommodation.. location was great a really handy for the local area which we managed to see a lot of places in the 4 days that we were there... The kids loved the bunk beds and playing in the garden as well as looking at the wonderful stars at night! A real gem and we want to keep it our secret hideaway
28/03/2016James
This was our second visit to Jakes Place having discovered this wonderful hide away almost a year ago to the day. It is such an idyllic location for exploring the surrounding towns, countrytside and beaches and the accomodation itself is just perfect. Nick and Dolly are also extremely welcoming hosts. We have 2 young daughters and hope to make Jakes Place an annual family event for many years to come.
12/02/2016Christopher
What a wonderful and beautiful place this is, and Dolly and Nick are equally as wonderful. We were greeted with smiles, and were given Champagne, scrumptious homemade chocolate truffles, free range eggs, and a lovely home baked loaf of bread. Inside Jake's place is so relaxing and cosy, and has wonderful views from the kitchen. We will definitely be returning.
21/12/2015Laila
beautiful place matched by the most amazing and ever changing view from the dining table and garden benches
23/10/2015tanya
Really lovely location, and very accommodating hosts. We had a brilliant day with Nick in his workshop building a stool. The cabin is cosy and has all the essentials you will need, and the bath is completely fantastic! The pictures don't do it justice. Just peaceful and restful with so much to do right on your doorstep. Thank you Nick and Dolly! We are revived!
16/10/2015Amy
Friendly hosts, great location, good for kids. We had a very relaxing time, even with two small children in tow.
03/07/2015louise
Wonderful wonderful holiday at Jake's Place - so much thought and creativity put into the accommodation and the location was so stunning that we felt no need to rush out in the morning and slowed the pace right down. The garden, view and hospitality were excellent and the cabin was rustic enough that it felt like a retreat from the modern world while at the same time providing real comfort and luxuries such as the huge bath and extremely comfortable and beautiful bed. There is so much to do in the area and it really is a stunning corner of England. Would highly recommend!!
28/06/2015Claire
My husband and I had a fantastic long weekend at Jake's Place. We we're looking for a hideaway to relax and unwind after a busy few months, and couldn't have asked for a more perfect spot. The cabin is beautifully designed, with stunning views of the surrounding countryside and sea, and everything you could wish for for a relaxing stay. We hope to be back sometime soon!
29/05/2015Sarah
Our stay was absolutely fantastic! Jakes Place is gorgous - the perfect mix of homely, funky, functional and private. The girls (5 & 10) had a wonderful time playing around the property and with Nick & Dolly's dog & cat. Nick & Dolly could not have been more hospitable or helpful. The surrounding area is lovely too - perfect walking, beaches & sightseeing. We'd certainly visit Jakes Place again..
31/03/2015Sandra
Jakes place was an amazing place to stay, great views, beautifully furnished and unbelievably comfortable and relaxing. Not to far from anywhere to feel isolated, but just far enough away for quiet peaceful nights beside the log burner! The hosts nick and dolly are welcoming, friendly and helpful. The work done on this place is quite frankly astounding. Great place, Great people! 10/10
22/02/2015Thomas
We had SUCH a wonderful stay at Jakes Place. It was a real testament to Nick and Dolly's talents and creativity. Warm, cosy and beautifully presented. It made for a wonderful valentines hideaway for our little family of four. We toasted marshmallows on the wood burner, read some great books, played some pretty good family board games and with the children safely tucked up in the most wonderfully crafted bunk bed we even treated ourself to a glass or two of wine to wile away the evening. The location also deserves a mention. We had fabulous days out to Salcombe, Totnes and Dartmouth and managed a cold hour or two on the stunning beach at Blackpool Sands. It honestly was nothing short of perfect- a true taste of the good life! Thank you so much to the lovely Kary Family. We hope to visit again soon!

"It was wonderful even though it rain most of the time. One morning the sun did make it out and the view out of our bedroom window was amazing."
12/10/2014Steph
"We spent two nights in this beautiful hideaway. On a wintery October weekend, this wooden house was perfect to relax. We were warm and cosy with a comfortable bed, luxurious bath, wood burner, kitchen and a little private garden with a barbecue and a view out over the fields to the sea! I just wanted to stay longer! The house feels very personal too as it was built by the owner, a woodworker."
10/10/2014Emma
"We liked Jake's Place very much! The location ist beautiful, we liked the house with its creative interior, the kids especially loved their bed with the very special ladder. .. Also the garden with the wooden deck is very nice and from the end of the garden there's a great view over the fields towards the sea. Everything in and around Jake's Place is done very original, and everything you could possibly need during your stay is there. Beside all this, is the family Kary very helpful and made us feel welcome. The place is also great for kids- our two boys (5&7 years) enjoyed it a lot."

Simply wonderful

It was truly wonderful.
28/02/2024Caitlin
We had such a wonderful time at Jake’s Place, beautifully decorated and set out with a cosy wood burner in an idyllic setting. The hot tub and sauna was such a lovely addition and the hosts were so accommodating with ensuring that we had everything we needed for a great break.

28/10/2022Rebecca
We had the best relaxing break at jakes place, it was everything that we expected
23/09/2022Bryanne
We had a great time at Jakes Place. It was so beautifully made/decorated and the beds were extremely comfy! We had everything we needed and the view was fabulous.
13/06/2022Hannah
Amazing views, peace and quiet! Lovely nearby towns. Great to get away. Cabin was full of character and very homely.
22/04/2022Daniel

We had a wonderful time at Jake's Place which is beautiful and in a stunning location. We loved the relaxed and comfortable cabin and looked forward to returning at the end of our day's adventures to sit by the wood burner and spend time together as a family.

We would definitely recommend a stay here, a slice of paradise and we hope to be back again!

we had a wonderful time.
