Overview
It’s a clever design, following the principles of architect Walter Segal, famed for his pioneering approach to sustainable and adaptable building. A mainly wooden interior dances with different textures and tones, unexpected curves add softness and from each wide window the trees look in. You may find yourself longing for a dramatic rainstorm so you can enjoy it from inside or feel embroiled in it on the covered veranda. The meadow encourages hundreds of butterflies, bees and dragonflies which, in turn, supports a lively returning swallow population, resident nuthatches, many finches, wrens and song thrushes. You'll find staples waiting for you including eggs from the owners' hens and a loaf of freshly baked bread. Visit The Kings Arms in Stockland, a proper community pub, with home cooked food and regular live music - it's an uphill 2.5-mile stumble home, but that might be fun too.
Join the walking path from the woodland behind you – locally called Turbary. From the site you can reach Goren Farm for a cream tea or homemade cider and walks along mown paths through stunning wildflower meadows. The best treat is right here though – on a clear day, climb to the top of The Crator, a level picnic spot with far-reaching views. Indoors there are books, backgammon, chess, cards, cookery books and bird books – even a guitar with songbooks.

Getting there
Hill's Cross, Shortmoor Cross, Stockland, Honiton, Devon EX149DA
///grove.moons.cheerful - What3Words is a new more accurate version of a postcode. This will take you directly to where you need to park so we recommend using this in your Sat Nav, but always remember to look at the owners’ directions too!
By car
By putting the postcode EX149DA into the SatNav you will arrive in exactly the right place. Whichever direction you arrive from you will eventually be travelling on either the A30 (or the A35 if coming from the southeast). The village of Stockland is very easy to find and is directly signposted from both of these roads. They are about 5 miles east of Honiton or 5 miles west of Axminster or 12 miles southwest of Ilminster. Hill's Cross Hide is located 2 and a half miles before you reach the village of Stockland. After exiting the A30 towards Stockland you travel along a very long straight road called Stockland Hill. After 1.7 miles you take a left-hand turn signposted to Stockland.
If you are travelling from the A35 you will join Stockland Hill from the opposite direction and need to travel 5.3 miles passing turnings to Dalwood, Ham, Broadhayes and Heathstock (and a very tall communications mast) before taking a righthand turn to Stockland. You will shortly pass a house on your left with blue windows (GoldenSquare) and then start descending the hill into Stockland. They are the next house on the left, just after a sharp bend in the road. They are on the left-hand side of a crossroads called Shortmoor Cross and their house also has blue window frames and a sunroom looking directly onto the road with multiple red geraniums in it. Turn left here and the parking and gateway to The Hide are on the left-hand side. Once parked, you enter up some steps and through your gateway before following the pathway along the side of The Hide.
By public transport
Honiton or Axminster both have train stations and are both about 5 miles from the site.
The nearest airport is Exeter.

Food & Drink
At Hill's Cross
The owners supply a basic welcome pack including eggs (from their very own free-range chickens), bread made in their restaurant, butter, milk, tea, coffee, sugar, oil, vinegar, salt and pepper.
It may be possible for the owners to provide a breakfast hamper, please contact them after booking for more details.
Local shops
There is a small village shop in Dalwood which is the neighbouring village, 3.5 miles away. Otherwise, the nearest bigger shop is Millers Farm Shop on the outskirts of Axminster, 5.6 miles away. There is also a Tescos in Axminster. Honiton is also 5 miles away and has a Tescos, Lidls, Aldi. Sidmouth has the nearest Waitrose which is 15 miles away.
Pubs & restaurants
The Kings Arms, Stockland (1.25 miles) - This is the local and will be yours too! Open seven days a week serving delicious home-cooked food and regular live music. A proper community pub which we strongly recommend booking in advance as it gets very busy. You can walk here but it will be uphill all the way home!
The Holt, Honiton (4.8 miles) - The owners very own restaurant and smokehouse so biased probably! But outstanding food and excellent service, for less bias check out TripAdvisor reviews!
Town Mill Bakery, Lyme Regis (14 miles) - Great breakfast and fortification station if you make it early to Lyme Regis. Homebaked sourdough and pastries, can be busy but worth the wait.
Rousden Kitchen, Rousden (8.8 miles) - Like being on the set of apocalypse now with great coffee and food! Loud music pervades over homemade sourdough and croissants, just don't ask to change anything...there is no need. Not vegan friendly.
The Hive Beach Cafe, Burton Bradstock (19 miles) - Beyond Lyme Regis, good quality food right on the beach, wonderful setting, can be insanely busy.
Hix Oyster and Fish House, Lyme Regis (14 miles) - Mark Hix seafood restaurant. Probably one of the best views from a restaurant in Dorset. Enjoy oysters and cocktails in a stunning setting. Quite pricey, but definitely another reason to visit Lyme Regis.

Activities
At Hill's Cross
Immediately behind The Hide is ancient woodland which is locally called Turbary and is common land. There are multiple local walks from here.
The owners would encourage guests to use The Crator, especially as a good place to watch the sunrise a ‘sunupper’ breakfast can be provided as well as a 'sundowner hamper' for guests to climb to the ridge and watch the sunset on the other side of the hill.
Places to visit
Burrow Farm Gardens is just 3.5 miles away. East Devons Secret Garden has 13 acres of lovingly designed gardens with colour throughout the year. Also has tea rooms and a specialist nursery.
Lyme Regis is the nearest seaside town with fantastic fossil hunting, a lively cafe scene, delicious local seafood and its famous Cobb Harbour. You can also take boat rides from the harbour.
A little further is Bridport and West Bay, both renowned for a bohemian feel and lively arts scene. West Bay has great seafood, Bridport has a lively and eclectic market scene with regular Wednesday and Saturday street markets and bi-monthly vintage and antique markets and farmers markets.
Very close by is Honiton (4.5 miles) which is long famed for its multiple antique shops and Axminster (5 miles) has a weekly farmers market in the town square on Thursdays.
Branscombe is worth a visit alone. The longest village in the UK it meanders through a beautiful valley to the sea. You can park at The Village Hall and take a scenic 20-minute stroll to the sea.
Outdoor & active
For active days out the owners would recommend the South West Coast path and the Jurassic Coast. In 2001 it was inscribed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for the outstanding universal value of its rocks, fossils and landforms. It remains England’s only natural World Heritage Site. There are several beautiful stretches really close by. Charmouth Beach is a favourite with family and there is a Golden Cap cliff walk from there.
The beautifully ramshackle Goren Farm. Just a miles walk from the site, stunning wildflower meadows where you can wander through mowed pathways, take a picnic to enjoy on a strategically placed bench or order a homemade Cream Tea or homemade Cider.
Burton Bradstock has stunning sandstone cliff formations and a popular beachside eatery there called Hive Beach Cafe.
A little further into Dorset is the stretch of Chesil Beach to Portland Bill. Back into Devon is the stunning stretch of coastal path between Beer (you can hire boats for mackerel fishing here), Branscombe and Seaton. Each beach with its own character and with far-reaching coastal views.
Locally the owners visit several nature reserves for lovely walks. Shute Woods is (10 minutes drive), Hembury Fort (20 mins), Trinity Hill Nature Reserve (20 minutes and right next to River Cottage HQ), East Hill Strips (15 minutes away). So although there are some lovely rural lanes for dog walking right outside the front door, a short car journey will provide you with many options!
National Parks of Dartmoor and Exmoor. Both are really accessible as day trips and can be reached in just over an hour.

Meet Becks and Joe
Becks and Joe met almost 20 years ago, and they have meandered through some real adventures together. Their first joint enterprise was The Holt restaurant which they still run today, Toast Café came next, before the real challenge of their two children! They bought Hill's Cross in 2017.
But with a young family and two businesses, they always thought it would take them some time. 2020 forced change, cue old friend, talented chippy and expert in restoring unusual spaces, Adam Burgess. Adam has lived on-site for much of the last year and he and Joe have thoughtfully and painstakingly transformed what was already a beautifully designed space into guest accommodation. The space inhabits years of friendships, creativity and love. It is literally a dream come true.
Wildlife & the environment
Hill's Cross has been run as an organic smallholding for nearly 40 years and is located in the Blackdown Hills which is a National Landscape. Becks and Joe have been here for four years and are just starting to find their feet. Their main aim is to operate in harmony with the natural world and to encourage biodiversity as much as they can.
The meadow which is directly outside The Hide encourages hundreds of butterflies, bees, dragonflies, crickets and in turn a varied bird population. They have seen both types of woodpecker nesting in the treeline visible from the Hide. They also have a lively returning swallow population, resident nuthatches, blue tits, long tail tits, coal tits, bullfinches, goldfinches, chaffinches, wrens, song thrushes, buzzards & recently they saw a kite. Birdwatching is very rewarding here! Nighttime visitors include bats and owls. They have seen foxes and deer from the bed within the Hide.

Our guests say...
Helena
Really cozy cabin in beautiful surroundings, fully stocked with everything you could need.
24/01/2025Becky
We had a lovely, relaxing stay at The Hide. We needed to escape the craziness of every day life for a few days and we were able to do just that. The cabin was peaceful and cosy, so much so that even our young, excitable dog succumbed to afternoon snoozes. We also enjoyed a delicious birthday meal for my partner at the owner's restaurant The Holt. A big thank you to Becks and Joe.
01/11/2024Christine, Canopy & Stars
We stayed 4 nights at the end of September for a birthday treat. The Hide is a lovely cabin in a great location in Devon, especially for walks in the hills or just relaxing with a book or watching the stars. Loved the setup, and the kitchen is fully stocked to get you going if you want to cook for yourself. We took day trips to Bridport for the market, and Lyme Regis to walk along the coast. If we had more time we'd have explored this lovely part of the country more but we also wanted to spend time relaxing in The Hide too. A walk to the local village pub which also does lovely food takes about 30 mins.

It was a very relaxing and peaceful stay, I had a lovely time thank you. The hosts were really welcoming and helpful.
20/09/2024Kate
We had a wonderful stay at Hill’s Cross Hide, Becks and Joe were so welcoming and the cabin was perfect. It’s a really stylish and cosy space with everything you need for a relaxing weekend away. The welcome goodies were a really nice touch. It’s one of our favourite Canopy and Stars that we’ve stayed in.

We had a most lovely stay at Hill's Cross Hide. Becks and Joe were wonderful hosts and the accommodation was just great - a nice private area for us with a good enclosed space for us and our dog to relax. We would definitely recommend the breakfast hamper - delicious and kept us going for our stay with fresh bread, croissants, granola etc. Lots to do in the area and good recommendations for things to suit us, the booklet in the Hide was super useful. Thanks so much to Becks and Joe for making us feel welcome, this is definitely one of our top Canopy & Stars places and highly recommended.
16/08/2024Clare Helen
Had a lovely time. The accommodation was very homely and comfortable. Just the right size for 2 people and with everything we needed provided. The welcome hamper was a worthwhile purchase. The setting was glorious - very tranquil and private - but close enough to places we wanted to visit. Out hosts were lovely, helpful without being intrusive. I would recommend the brewery tour they can organise for you. Also their restaurant in Honiton. We also visited Govern Farm for a cream tea on our last day which was very very tasty plus they have a 300 year old cider press that they are still using. We came back feeling beautifully rested. Definitely recommend to others.

Had an exceptional stay. It was the perfect place to escape the city and celebrate our baby moon in the beautiful countryside.
06/05/2024Juliana
We had a amazing 3 days at the property. Everything was catered for and the total silence was great. Becky the host was there to answer any questions. Dexter our dog had water, dog treats
05/04/2024Russ
Ahh we had such a lovely time. It's such a beautiful space, with everything you need. The kitchen is well equipped, comfy bed, warm, and a good shower. It was perfectly clean, and the birds singing in the morning was a delight.

Fantastic location. Excellent accommodation. .
23/10/2023David
We needed a short escape to unwind, the weather was very kind and The Hide was fabulous.
04/09/2023Andre
From the moment we arrived we couldn’t help but ‘switch off’. The owners were there to greet us on our arrival and to answer any questions we may have and to give us handy info about the local area. The location was quiet and extremely tranquil everything we needed was at our fingertips. Our two dogs were also well catered for and they loved the enclosed garden and the local walks. We would go back tomorrow if we were able without question.
25/08/2023Melanie
Lovely location & excellent hospitality. The accommodation was great & it was a perfect spot for my two dogs.
21/08/2023Sally
Loved our stay at Hill’s Cross Hide. Beautiful surroundings; beautiful lodge, clean and sparking- very comfortable. Amazing breakfast hamper filled with gorgeous goodies. The gin was a real treat. Becks and Joe were really friendly on our arrival
07/07/2023Janet
I bought my husband this little getaway as part of his 50th Birthday present. The place didn't disappoint, the owners Becks & Joe were super friendly and gave us fantastic advice on the local area and beaches, they communicated to us before our stay and even allowed us in the hide a little earlier as we were stopping in Somerset prior to our visit to Hills Cross. We had a breakfast hamper and it was so delicious with home baked bread and pastries. Muesli and yoghurt, milk, fresh juice, preserves, fresh fruit and eggs were all included and absolutely delicious. The Hide was stunning, beautifully kept and furnished, we immediately felt at home and the surroundings were just breathtaking. The bed was very comfortable and furnished with quality bedding (we slept so well) and there was lots of little extra touches like books to read, games to play, listen to music or try and lean the guitar! We did have a giggle with the 'true or false' game and also both having a go on the guitar. Our dog was made very welcome too, with a jar of treats, plenty of poo bags, doggy towel and leads if needed - nothing was too much trouble. Thank you so much to the family, we didn't want to leave.

We had a wonderful stay, it was very comfortable and in a really peaceful location.
26/05/2023Helena
We had such a lovely stay.. it is an idyllic location with wildlife all around, peaceful tranquil.. Hills Cross hide is spacious and calming, with nature views all around . Three mornings we woke up to two deer in the meadow. I saw a spotted woodpecker and lots of other small birds.. we think we saw a hen Harrier(certainly a large bird of prey) being chased by a couple of crows. The views from the top of the meadow were stunning. The bed is really comfortable.. we were both so relaxed and would love to return. The hosts were lovely and friendly..
15/05/2023Jackie
We loved our stay! From the moment we arrived, our shoulders dropped & we relaxed completely. What a gorgeous cabin… everything had been thought of. Delicious bread, milk all other basics were there so no dash to find a shop. I love the interior, veranda & location… everything to whisk us away from our normal hectic world. Thank you Becks & Joe!!
31/03/2023Victoria
We had an amazing time staying in Hills Cross Hide. The space is gorgeously decorated and has everything you could need. They really made our 2 dogs feel welcome, which is different to just allowing dogs! The location is perfect and we can’t wait to stay again.
24/03/2023Katie
My partner and I plus pooch stayed at Hill's cross Hide for 2 nights as an out of season break. We found the accommodation easily from the instructions and we met Becks when we arrived; she helped with a dog walk which turned into a pub walk (not Beck's fault!). The weather was not good on Saturday but the Hide is very warm and cosy so we were in no rush to leave. The bed was comfy with lovely linen, the shower was hot with plentiful towels. We ate in on Friday night but chose to go out on Saturday night for a great meal at the Holt (also owned by Becks and Joe). No rush to check out on Sunday, it was all very leisurely. I would recommend the Hide for a relaxing break for 2 plus dog (Lola loved exploring all round it). The weather didn't really matter as it was so cosy.

Hills Cross Hide is a beautiful place to stay. The Hide is amazing, fully equipped with everything you could think of, placed in the most peaceful setting. It was a great base for exploring North Devon! The host was always on hand for any questions and provided the most incredible breakfast hamper. If you’re thinking about it, book it. I can’t wait to go back.
06/03/2023Natalie
We had a wonderful time. It was an Incredible place to stay, the interior was beautiful and the attention to detail was faultless. Everything had so much thought put into it. The hosts had thought of absolutely everything you might need for your stay and more! The location was stunning and the views were the best we have had anywhere we have stayed. Great walks right from the door and fantastic local pub. The hosts were also incredibly welcoming and helpful. We loved it!
25/02/2023Mandy
We loved our stay at the Hide - such a lovely setting (even in the winter months) and a beautifully designed turf-clad and pine-scented cabin. Particular highlight for us was the Otter Brewery tour. We loved chatting to Joe's parents and learning about their brewery. Hembury hill fort was a beech-y heaven and the Branscombe to Beer cliff walk was the other kind of beach-y heaven. Thank you!
10/02/2023Olivia
We had such an amazing stay, Joe and Becks looked after us incredibly well! Hill’s Cross Hide was beautiful decorated and so comfortable, the surrounds were perfect; out in nature but could easily get into surrounding towns. Lots of beautiful walks nearby, perfect for our active dog!
28/10/2022Yolande
We were warmly welcomed by Becks shortly after our arrival at this idyllic location. We found fresh eggs, milk and butter and even gin and tonics. It's October so using the fire pit was not on unless it was a good day, Becks dropped off a basket of logs for us regardless. On our first morning we ventured up the hill, where we discovered the fire pit, to watch the sun rise over the misty valley below, a magical start to the day and a reminder to bring our yoga mats up for a session on the little flat area. We had slept comfortably, and breakfasted on homemade bread made by Beck's husband who incidentally owns and runs 'The Holt' a restaurant in Honiton, well worth a visit. Honiton is 5 miles away and we visited twice for some supplies and a nose around the shops. Our plans for taking the car to Lime and Axminster quickly fell by the wayside as we settled into the peace and quiet of the Hide. We read, knitted, crocheted, talked, ate, did some yoga and enjoyed each others company away from the usual Internet and TV. Everything about this place has been so very carefully considered, there was nothing we missed. A perfect venue if, like us, you enjoy the peace of the countryside.

Really nice location , relaxing , good size cabin and outside space, but also near enough to places to do activities if you wanted to. Hosts were welcoming and friendly..on hand if you required information/ recomendations etc but left you to your holiday if you didn't need anything. Really great stay and would recomend.

Becks and Joe have created a true hideaway. You feel like you are nestled in the trees, away from the world. The Hide has a feel of luxury, with everything you need, and also what you don’t! (Wi-Fi and TV!). We cooked outside on the Oz pig and up in the crater on the firepit looking at the amazing view of the beautiful countryside. Inside there is comfort, all you need in the kitchen and a fascinating range of books and games. We wanted to move in!

We had an amazing stay at Hill's Cross hide. The cabin itself was easy to find, clean, cosy and perfect for the two of us and our dog Milo! There was easy access to the local amenities, with the big supermarkets and coast only 25 minutes away. It was the perfect place to unplug and relax. The star gazing was incredible and its the best night sky I've ever seen!

As a spur-of-the-moment choice for a well-needed break, The Hide turned out to be just what we wanted and more. Sitting on the veranda with our G&T* in hand, listening to the birds in the trees that surround The Hide and watching the bees feed from the foxgloves, we felt so relaxed and comfortable. Buddy, our Jug, also enjoyed the freedom of The Hide's private garden too. The whole place - The Hide, the location, the friendliness of our hosts, Becks and Joe - had such a calming effect that it will stay with us for some time. By the way, the breakfast hamper was so good and came with so much that it lasted us for three mornings! We didn't make it to Joe's restaurant, The Holt in Honiton, but I enjoyed my trip around the Otter Brewery and the recommendation for The King's Arms in Stockland was champion. I know that people often say that they will come back but never actually do. However, on this occasion, I can honestly say that we will be back some time. *Seriously, you must try the New Moon Gin samples Becks' provides. It really is one of the best gins my wife and I have ever tasted, says me looking at the now half-empty bottle we brought home . . .

We had a fantastic few days in this lovely accommodation. The owners really have thought of everything. Perfect location for some peace away from it all. Near to lots of lovely seaside towns in both Devon and Dorset. Local pub was great and food good too. Would really recommend.

This was just what we needed for a few days get away. The hide was lovely to stay in and very welcoming. A great combination of natural and rustic charm with modern convenience.

We came to The Hide from sunny Cornwall to celebrate our honeymoon having got married the weekend before. It has been a wonderfully relaxing stay with lots of lovely walks and visits to the Kings Arms! The little touches of bread, milk, eggs etc were perfect as was the bottle of fizz to celebrate with…thank you for such a kind thought! Becks and Joe have thought of everything and the space is beautiful and rustic.

We spent a wonderful 4 nights at The Hide. It looked amazing online but was even better in reality - plenty of space, nice big private garden and deck, wonderful views to enjoy the tranquil evenings. Becks was so kind and welcoming - we'd forgotten or been unable to find a couple of things for our bbq and Becks provided them from her own garden and kitchen. Freshly baked bread and Meg's Eggs were delicious for breakfast. A great location for a peaceful few days. We ended up not doing much of the hiking we'd planned because we were happy to laze around the cabin and garden so much.

Accommodation was comfortable with very good nights' sleep as a result of very clean bedding and comfy mattress. Great aesthetic in how the hide was put together. Owner's friendly with well-judged personal touches such as local G&T included. Kitchen well-equipped and nothing was missing. Thanks

Amazing!! A real piece of heaven! Superbly clean, well equipped, lovely personal touches, cosy decor, extremely comfortable bed, fresh & fantastic quality breakfast hamper, very accommodating & friendly host! In such a busy world & our busy lives it was so nice to stay at this beautiful, tranquil piece of heaven. Everything you need for the perfect relaxing retreat.

The Hide was an incredibly peaceful and unique place to stay. The decor is immaculate and interesting with a boho touch. Becks and Joe are such accommodating hosts and made sure we had everything we needed and more! They provided us with maps and recommendations for plenty of days out and eateries. The location is beautiful, tranquil and restful. We loved staying here and wish we could live there to be honest!

We stayed at the Hide for a honeymoon getaway, we had an amazing few days in such a beautiful location and superbly well thought out conversion.

I was looking for a little solitude and The Hide did not disappoint. This place oozes solitudeness. Unlike so many old stone holiday cottages, which can be quite dark inside, The Hide is all about big windows, letting you see the woods all around you and letting all that light inside. It has a proper kitchen, with Becks providing the essentials, like freshly baked sourdough bread and freshly laid free range eggs, as well as milk and butter, though I would like to visit The Hide again when the weather is not so miserable and I can cook outdoors, too. And for readers of Idler magazine, The Hide has a small collection of back issues. Hard to think of a better place to idle. No ukulele, but there is a guitar.

Wonderful break in a lovely peaceful location, and a beautiful cosy cabin that looks even better in real life than the photos. The owners could not have been lovelier or more accommodating, to the point of even arranging a gas stove for me to use on a day the power company had switched off the power for most of the day. Everything has been put in place to make your stay as comfortable and relaxing as possible, and I highly recommend ordering the breakfast and barbecue hampers if you don't want to have to venture out too often. One breakfast and one barbecue hamper lasted me Monday through to Friday morning - the steaks are sublime, as is the homemade bread that comes with the breakfast! My dog and I enjoyed my stay here immensely, and my dog was delighted with the sausages left in the fridge especially for her, which was a lovely thoughtful surprise from the owners! Everything from arrival with complimentary G&Ts supplied with a little welcome card, to departure was just perfect and I couldn't think of a more relaxing way to spend a week unwinding than at the Hide. I absolutely plan to book another break here, and I couldn't recommend the Hide enough for a perfect relaxing break.

It was fantastic. You can spend a free stress days in a very cosy cabinet, with excellent service. The meals are marvellous, everything home made, and you can enjoy in the cabinet with worrying of cooking. Also, we enjoyed cooking a steak in the stove outside, watching the start. The locación is perfect close to the beach and very quiet and calm. The owners provide a very good service, personalize to your neededs. Highly recommend it. And also we could travel with our 2 dogs

Cannot rate this place highly enough, such a gorgeous cabin. Joe and Becks were a delight, they made us feel so welcome and were very helpful. Their home made jam and bread were the bomb and the restaurant they own was spectacular. 11/10

The Hide was really lovely, and an inspiring place to stay! Since we’ve been home, we’ve spent more time in lower lighting in the evening to recreate the cosiness we felt there. The dogs settled in straight away and it was a huge bonus having a secure garden they could explore while we had a campfire or evening bbq. Becks & Joe were brilliant hosts - a friendly welcome, anniversary card and lovely fresh produce, then after chatting they booked us dinner and a brewery tour and providing extras like fresh baked bread when we asked. Hill’s Cross Hide was beautiful and so interesting to look around. They’d thought of so many special touches for the decoration but also for guests & dogs - gin & snacks for us, and treats, towels, poo bags and bowls for the dogs! It was fun using solar lanterns and battery powered candles in the evenings too!
06/10/2021Danielle
Beautiful property in an amazing setting - the accomodation was such a high quality, rustic finish and so comfortable and relaxing. The hosts were the perfect amount of engaged - communicating when needed or with helpful information but not contacting us all the time. Lovely welcome pack of fresh eggs and bread. Couldn't have wished for a nicer break and we wanted to stay longer! Can't recommend staying here enough.

Our stay was fantastic, what an amazing space. Everything was perfect at The Hide. Beck and Joe are brilliant hosts and did everything they could to make our stay comfortable. It really was an unforgettable experience. The welcome hamper was amazing and they even left some toys for our baby girl.

We had a lovely 5 days at Hill Cross Hide.
06/09/2021Rebecca
We had a fantastic time at the hide which is both well located and secluded. Becks and Joe were great hosts and had thought of all of the little touches to make our stay relaxed and extra special. Their local knowledge was shared freely and they had insights about the whole area and a huge number of activities - including great food and drink recommendations. The whole space is finished to a really high standard and feels very private.

Our first stay with C&S didn’t disappoint. A fantastic stay in a unique natural building nestled in to the hillside of the Blackdown Hills AONB. Our hosts made us feel welcome from the moment we booked with great communication about what to expect and suggestions for days out and places to eat. Upon arrival we were welcomed by the host and made to feel at home. The Hide is constructed from a blend of woods crafted by hand and a green roof to create a real connection with nature. You are nestled within a ancient tree lined wildflower meadow with your own private outside space. The interior design reflects this connection with stylish furniture, natural art and tactile rugs. The living area is spacious with a selection of books and low level lighting. The kitchen is excellently equipped with a welcome selection of fresh sourdough, eggs, butter and even your first G&Ts. The king sized bed is very comfy and you can watch the birds through a unique window as you enjoy a slow start to the day. The double rain shower is a great refreshing way to start the day. The outside balcony is a great place to unwind admiring the sounds of nature and to have your breakfast. Truly relaxing.

What an amazing place, The Hide has been converted into a relaxing haven. The attention to detail both in its design but in those touches that make your stay feel special were very much appreciated. (especially the G&T!) We had a 3 night stay with our dog, it was amazing for Barley (the dog!) completely private fenced in garden, lovely treats, lovely walks. We booked the hampers both breakfast and BBQ. I would highly recommend booking these usually I fill the car with too much food but I didn't have to do anything. One breakfast and one BBQ was enough for our complete stay and very yummy! We also visited the Holt (the owners restaurant in Honiton) the meal was amazing and also dog friendly. The local Goren Farm where they grow native wildflower meadows was great including their very large cream tea (I would split between 2). Local pub was a lovely walk and extremely friendly. Overall Becks and Joe and their lovely family were such wonderful hosts and made our Anniversary stay so special. Their Hide is beautiful, the bed sooo comfortable and with such a peaceful surrounding and a home full of books and games you wont fail to relax. 100% will return it was heaven!

What a perfect little retreat! Becks & Joe have thought of all the little things when creating this beautiful cabin; from the soft-touch furnishings, to the mix of different wood the cabin is built from, down to the complimentary drinks and fresh flowers on the coffee table. The cabin feels really spacious and has massive windows so you get views of both woodland and meadow, which is fantastic as you feel fully surrounded by nature. This is the perfect place to switch off and truly slow down and recuperate; I turned my phone off, read books, played the guitar, went on walks, watched birds and sipped on gin and tonics -it was bliss!

A quiet countryside retreat to read, write, stargaze and relax in nature. I lay in bed watching deer in the field, sat in numerous comfy spots around the cabin, reading and writing. The kitchen had everything I needed, plus the breakfast hamper was delicious. The Hide has you tucked away from it all, but also easy walking distance to a lovely local pub and a short drive from the nearest town or beach. My favourite spot was in bed with tea looking out across the field and up at ‘the crator’ eating food alfresco, reading and at night stargazing and listening to the owls. The cabin was spotless, clean, warm, and cosy, also the bathroom had a hot powerful shower. The owners were really helpful - and their place The Holt is a nicd spot for food, plus the family gin welcome gift was an added bonus. I stayed three nights and wish I had stayed longer!

Really cozy cabin in beautiful surroundings, fully stocked with everything you could need.

We had an amazing time staying in Hills Cross Hide. The space is gorgeously decorated and has everything you could need. They really made our 2 dogs feel welcome, which is different to just allowing dogs! The location is perfect and we can’t wait to stay again.

Thank you!
