Overview
After four, happy years of welcoming lovely guests, the old Den is being replaced with this wonderful space. Everything at The Devon Den has been designed to encourage guests to immerse themselves in nature. The open-plan cabin’s unique shape, hand-crafted by Jo and Ben, lets you breeze in and out to the woods, wander to the crackling fire pit and dip your toes in the stream, take a dip in the wood fired hot tub, or just enjoy the rocking chair on the veranda, all while surrounded by the sounds of wildlife. A genuine love of, and commitment to, the environment runs through every choice, from the sustainable materials used to make the cabin, to the top end solar power system, a dry toilet and even the little ladders in the pond for frogs and newts.
In the Den there are games, jigsaws and a library including recipe books full of tips for getting the most out of the BBQ and superb local produce. On booking, you will be sent a digital guidebook which works offline, with all the info you need to get the most from your stay - maps to guide you along the nearby lanes and footpaths, details of secret Dartmoor swimming spots, tips on the best pasty shop.
You can nip out to the glorious beaches at Bude, just forty minutes away, or take the Granite Way cycle path from Okehampton along the old railway lines. Your hosts are knowledgeable and passionate eco builders who could give you a crash course on every aspect of sustainable living, but even if you simply linger here for a few days, you’ll come away with a renewed appreciation for the peace and beauty of nature.

Getting there
Devon Dens, Germansweek, Devon EX21 5AL
The Owners do not live on site so please plan your journey in advance by taking into account any holiday traffic, food/drink stops etc. The Owners will need an ETA so make sure to keep in touch with them about your arrival time in advance. If guests are very late due to changing plans, a charge may be incurred.
Main gate: ///crackles.bolt.scout
By car
Directions are easy, although if you are using a phone satnav, you may lose signal for the last bit.
Devon Dens is best approached from the A3079. Use the postcode and take the turning signed Bratton Clovelly. There is a large mast which can usually be seen and the turning is opposite this. The junction is called Castle Cross, Broadbury (make sure it is the turning for Bratton only a mile or so from the site – there are other signs beforehand which won’t work with these directions). Then take the first right after half a mile, signed Germansweek. Devon Dens is three quarters of a mile down that road on the left. Look for the double gates that will probably be open, with an owl on top of the right hand post. Drive in and park on the top car park.

Meet Jo & Ben
Jo and Ben spent years living in Brighton, Amsterdam, Spain, Portugal and Greece, before eventually deciding to grow up in Devon. Jo set up and ran The Pickled Walnut restaurant in Okehampton for five years, whilst Ben ran large building projects before specialising in traditional carpentry and timber framing. They watched traveller friends create and live in beautiful and inspiring tiny homes, and in 2011, after another spell in Europe, Ben made the couple a unique wooden home and Barrel Top Wagons was born. They found the site that is now Devon Dens in the same year, and after a lengthy planning process, permission was granted in 2014. The idea has always been to create a natural site with beautiful structures suitable for year round use; to promote the extraordinary landscape and produce in West Devon; to enable guests to holiday in the West Country without trashing the planet. When they’re not building cabins or welcoming guests, the pair can usually be found enjoying the coastal path, wild swimming on Dartmoor or tucking in to a pasty or ice cream in Bude.
Wildlife & Environment
A strong eco ethos is at the heart of Devon Dens – from using locally sourced timber to create the extraordinary cabins, to the newt and toad ladders in the pond, bird boxes, wildlife log piles and the reed beds that treat the water. There’s a wildlife pond and stream, and extensive planting has been done of trees, flowers and hedge. Plenty of information is provided for guests regarding composting, recycling, energy and waste. It is hoped that guests visit with an intention to share that eco ethos.

We had a lovely short holiday with family and our friends at Devon Dens, we used the sauna and hot tub, the bbq and the kitchen. It was so enjoyable and we would love to return.

We had a great time in The Devon Den. We had a couple of rainy days but that didn't matter as we were so comfortable (we completed a 1000 piece jigsaw). When we could we enjoyed cooking outdoors on the well equipped BBQ. The wood fired sauna and hot tub were such a treat and our boys loved lounging around in the hammocks. Communication with Jo was great and the information provided before our stay was so useful. We loved our stay and would recommend to anyone looking for a quiet off grid trip!
19/08/2024Sophie
We absolutely loved the Devon Den. Such an amazing and beautiful spot - all to yourself. When the kids got over there being no WiFi, we spent more time playing games as a family than we have for months
05/08/2024Helen
Fantastic stay and the owner were so helpful and friendly. Perfect for a family getaway and very well setup.
03/05/2024Ben
We had such a restful stay at the Den. The cabin comfortably accommodated us and our 4 children in the most idyllic surroundings. The facilities were superb and easy to use the highlights of course being the sauna and hot tub which were sublime after a days trek in the rain. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming from the hosts and the homely feel of the cabin made our stay even more comfortable.
22/03/2024Lucy
An incredibly peaceful stay- its in the most beautiful, isolated spot! The house was beautiful and had everything we could need. The sauna and hot tub were so great and other features like the hammocks and the firepit were also loved.
01/09/2023Wilhelmina
We had the most wonderful time at The Devon Den! It is located in a lovely remote location. The grounds are stunning and so well maintained. The den itself is so cosy and welcoming and surprisingly spacious enough even for 6 adults (small ladies!). The sleeping facilities are great, even the sofa bed and chair are comfortable. The cooking facilities were perfect, the shower so powerful and warm. The outdoor space is fantastic. We loved the hot tub but my favourite was the sauna! We ventured for a short walk but what we had come for was to relax and we honestly did not want to leave this lovely place! Jo kept in touch before our arrival and answered all the queries we had, and was very welcoming once we arrived. We would definitely all recommend The Devon Den and really hope to return in the near future.
16/06/2023Helene
We were so impressed by the cabin and grounds - they surpassed our expectations. The cabin was really comfortable and well laid out, with everything we needed and the setting was just idyllic, a real haven. The hot tub was the icing on the cake! We all agreed we’d like to return.

We had a great stay at Devon Dens, although the weather was not great, one evening we fired the log burner up and it was very cosy and we had some drinks and completed a jigsaw puzzle .(quite a few Games and puzzles and books in the Den)

Wonderful calm and peaceful stay. Lived up to our expectations and more. The area is beautiful, not far to amazing beaches, moors, woodlands and waterfalls. Can't recommend this place enough. We will definitely be back. Thanks Jo and Ben for being so welcoming and for creating this beautiful place.

A fabulous weekend, the cabin and land has been a beautiful place to spend time relaxing and enjoying time together. It's certainly a great spot and we will be recommending it to everyone we meet for years to come. Jo is a wonderful host with a well equipped home from home. Honestly couldn't have asked for more. It really makes the difference finding a place like this these days Nothing was too much to ask of Jo, I felt like she would have done anything to make our stay the best it could have been
03/02/2023Tim
Me, my partner and the pooch stayed here for a long Birthday weekend with friends that joined us for one of the nights. The property is stunning, and the land it is on is beautiful. Going to bed after an evening star gazing toasting marshmallows and waking up to a morning coffee with the sound of the stream. The host welcomed us to the property, ensured we had everything we needed and understood how to use the facility properly, she was super friendly and informative. Devon Dens allowed me to live my hippy fantasy and be eco friendly but with a healthy portion of luxury! The Sauna was a highlight for us all. We would love to come back and experience the place in each season.
20/01/2023Poppy
My family and I (6 adults) stayed for 3 days during Christmas. It was wonderful. The cabin is perfectly thought so that 6 adults don't feel packed. It's well equipped, cosy and warm. The best thing is the inside and outside seating options. The 2 armchairs under the cabin's canopy are a delight for an early cup of tea. Jo is constantly looking after you. We ordered many hampers and all were delicious. Everything works well and the surroundings are very charming.

We had a brilliant time at the Devon Den. The lodge was super cozy, in a stunning location. We loved being off grid and away from reality for a few days! The host was super attentive and their attention to detail was incredible. We traveled with a dog and a young baby and the host provided useful equipment for both of them. We made use of the sauna which really was the cherry on top of a lovely weekend. I would highly recommend the Devon Dens and we are hoping to return again soon.
11/11/2022Elysia
The Devon Den exceeded any prior expectations that we had - it was just amazing! We decided on staying at Devon Dens to celebrate my partners 30th birthday and I am so happy that we chose this lovely place. We were a group of 8 and we throughly enjoyed all of the luscious land to relax on the hammocks, have a bbq and do some relaxing yoga! Having no wifi and signal was the perfect detox and I feel that we need to do more often to completely switch off! I would 100% recommend this gorgeous place to everyone if you’re going as a large group and I hope that we can visit again soon. Jo, our host, was very hospitable and made everything seamless. The holiday blues are real!

Lovely cabin in an idyllic setting - very much enjoyed our stay
04/07/2022Gareth
Devon Dens is one of those slightly magical places where you just feel a sense of tranquility and calm. The cabin we stayed in was spacious, light, well-equipped and clean - created a lovely space where we would have been happy to hunker down for the day were it not for the fact that the weather for our week was beautiful. What is even more special is the site - beautiful trees, shrubs, wild flowers, and incredible bird song. We seemed to sync our evening meal with the woodpecker’s! Our kids simply loved exploring, playing hide and seek and splashing in the stream. They amused themselves for hours which was great for us! We really enjoyed disconnecting - there really is no way you’ll get phone signal or mobile data - but we found that a bit of enforced digital detoxing was good for the soul. All in all, we feel we’ve found somewhere special that we would definitely return to. Thank you Jo!
18/04/2022Ed
Beautiful location. Met all expectations- very cosy in the Den. Managed to keep all four teenagers entertained and digital free for five days. Sauna was fabulous Had everything we needed
21/02/2022Amy
We had such a beautiful stay! The accommodation was warm and very comfortable which we were not expecting in February in between storm Eunice and Franklin! Jo is an excellent host who went out of her way to ensure that she kept us updated (storm conditions) and that we had everything we needed. We arrived very late at night due to the storm, but had no trouble getting into the den or finding it. Once inside it was smiles all round.... beautiful fresh flowers were on the table along with a couple of very welcome treats in the fridge. There is so much that we loved and nothing that we didn't! Small details like having salt, pepper and oil for cooking, a selection of board games and jigsaw puzzles, books for all ages, a guitar and lovely warm blankets to get cosy by the fire. Despite the weather, we had the most relaxing and comfortable break. The beds were also so incredibly comfortable that I had to make sure I found out where they were from before we left! Jo has clearly poured her heart into The Devon Den and it shows, her concern and care for the environment is hugely appreciated and so very welcome. We are so pleased that we came and would absolutely love to come back

We had such a wonderful time at Devon Dens, from start to finish it was just perfect. There was just such a special feeling about the whole place and we enjoyed every minute. A real luxury to completely switch off without any screens, WiFi, social media and a chance to have some quality family time playing games and reading, toasting marshmallows on the firepit and enjoying being surrounded by nature.
17/09/2021Debra
We had such a wonderful time in The Devon Den, really warm and cosy with a well equipped kitchen. The den itself is an incredible piece of work and you can tell that plenty of love and hard work went into making it. Jo was a brilliant host and really went out of her way to help us with what we needed. I can't wait to come back and stay another time!!

We're super excited to be adding Jo and Ben's latest space. A wonderful addition to the collection. The feedback for Carpenter Cabin should give you a good feel for what it will be like. Book a stay and be the first to write a review!

What a wonderful place! Had a lovely stay renting both cabins and having the run of the whole place for my 30th. Jo was so helpful and gave lots of advice of what to do in the local area. Had the best kitchen/BBQ area too for cooking for the masses.

Communication with Jo was great and the information provided before our stay was so useful. We loved our stay and would recommend to anyone looking for a quiet off grid trip!

We absolutely loved the Devon Den. Such an amazing and beautiful spot - all to yourself. When the kids got over there being no WiFi, we spent more time playing games as a family than we have for months

An incredibly peaceful stay- its in the most beautiful, isolated spot! The house was beautiful and had everything we could need. The sauna and hot tub were so great and other features like the hammocks and the firepit were also loved.
