Overview
As settings go, it’s hard to deny, Mayfly Cabin has one of the best. Encircled by lofty hills, billowing tree canopies, aside a five-acre lake bedazzled and fringed with emerald life – just a glance from a window or the French doors is enough to refresh and rejuvenate. Outside said French doors, are the patio, where the serene landscape will tempt you out for every meal, cuppa, or spare moment – and if you brought your fishing rod, you can choose between feeding the trout, or the trout feeding you. The site is a working trout farm, so fresh fish is very much on the menu – you can get fresh or smoked trout, as well as smoked salmon (consider bringing a large stack of bagels and cream cheese). Inside the cabin there’s a modern kitchen, to whip food together either for inside or al fresco. Nearby, the kitchen area gives way to the living space, which you’ll likely make use of on rainy days, with books and board games or the evening, when the sun drops behind the hill range and it becomes log-burner-o’clock. Brighter days will tempt you outdoors, to explore the sights of the estate (off limits areas are marked), or only slightly further afield to the many beaches just a short drive away: Woolacombe, Morthoe, Ilfracombe and many more. You’re in between several AONBs at Mayfly Cabin, so whether you’re looking for adventure on surf, or on turf, you’re in the best place you could be.

My stay at Mayfly Cabin was amazing. It was exactly as it was pictured and way more amazing in person. It was the most peaceful 2 days for my partners birthday and we couldn’t have asked for anything more. John and Richard were both very lovely, even though I didn’t get to meet them as they were away they still made sure everything was sorted for us and even checked in with me throughout the duration of our stay. I will definitely be back ans it was 100% worth the 4 hour train journey from Birmingham. Would definitely recommend.

Nothing less than perfect! My girlfriend and I visited for a couple nights away, and everything we saw on the website as just as we had hoped. Lots of private land to ourselves, beautiful landscapes all around, a warm and cosy cabin, and plenty of wildlife around. Could not recommend this any more and can't wait to book my return!

Access to insects and wildlife

We had a lovely stay at Mayfly cabin for two nights, the scenery was amazing and John was very attentive and helpful. Waking up in the mornings to the view of the lake was so peaceful, if you stay here you must walk around the rest of the lake as it’s beautiful. Good location and looked exactly as the pictures showed.

We absolutely loved our stay at the mayfly cabin in Devon. It was such a lovely location and the cabin itself was beautiful. Very cosy and homely, we felt very comfortable there. It was in a great location to visit lots of places in north Devon and the hosts even recommended a few places for us to go for dinner, one being the Pyne Arms which was lovely. The hosts themselves were very down to earth and even though we only saw them at the beginning and end of trip, we knew they weren’t far away and could phone them at any time if we needed anything. We will definitely be visiting again soon!

Me and my partner had the most wonderful time at Mayfly cabin, we came for a weekend of idyllic relaxation and were not disappointed. The cabin was cosy and homely, we settled instantly, feeling right at home. With a picturesque view over the lake we enjoyed watching the waterfowl as we had our breakfast, and adored walking the grounds too. Our hosts were fantastic, giving us all the space we needed to relax whilst letting us know they were there should we need anything. This is a fabulous place for a private getaway in a stunning location, rural enough but also a short drive to local amenities.

We stayed in Mayfly Cabin for 4 nights in December. It felt as if Christmas had arrived! The cabin is lovely, surprisingly modern but very cosy. The bed is really comfortable, the cabin is spotless and well maintained. The cooking facilities are very good. It is in a great location. We walked to Broomhill Sculpture Park through the woods; a great place to visit. The restaurant there is fantastic. The owner is very friendly, he has an interesting collection of music and film memorabilia, which we didn't expect. We also visited nearby towns Barnstaple and Bideford. The Burton Art Gallery in Bideford is definitely worth a visit.

Peaceful and quiet couple of days away , cabin was comfortable and cosy , everything you would need , sadly couldn’t explore far because of the relentless rain , but still a very welcome break
08/11/2023Jenny
We had a wonderful time at Mayfly Cabin. It was as beautiful as the photos on the website. Richard & John were great hosts - super friendly and very helpful.
13/10/2023Frances
We had a lovely relaxed time in this beautiful place
09/08/2023Paul
The cabin was absolutely amazing! The only one on the trout fishery and it overlooked a beautiful trout pond and if you follow the path it takes you through the woods and opens up to an incredible lake. The cabin was clean and cosy and had everything we needed. The owners were friendly and helpful and gave great recommendations. We will be back!
04/08/2023Lauren
It was a lovely quiet location with a wonderful view. The host was attentive but not too over powering. The accommodation was spacious. Lovely relaxing break
14/07/2023Dannielle
This property is located within the confines of a trout fishery and specifically directly in front of one of the small trout ponds. The cabin has everything that you need whether it be for summer ie patio with table and chairs, bbq and fireplace or for winter ie log burner and cosyness. It is located a couple of miles outside of Barnstaple where you can pick up the Tarka trail and cycle or walk for miles. The hosts are always on hand to assist with anything that you need whether that be additional lofs for the firepit or even catching one of their trout for you to cook or bbq. Parking directly outside the cabin and plenty of grounds/lake to walk around. Well recommended.
07/07/2023Andy
We had a lovely time staying at Mayfly Cabin. The hosts were lovely and helpful and the location and accommodation is stunning and secluded. Close to many beaches with just a short drive. Opportunity to get involved in fishing as it’s a working fishery.
03/07/2023Hollie
We had a wonderful time. The cabin is lovely, beautifully appointed and in a fabulous situation. We so enjoyed watching the trout swimming by and other wildlife as we sat outside enjoying a coffee. The cabin is is a great location to go out and enjoy what this beautiful area has to offer. We met the lovely owner who was so nice and friendly. I have already recommended the cabin to a number of people and I would certain like to go back there again.
05/06/2023Deborah
A beautiful cabin in a quiet oasis! The cabin is finished to a fabulous standard with really good and useful appliances. Comfortable bed and a beautiful view of the fish ponds out of the window. Even in the rain it was stunning! We enjoyed the fireplace but didn't brave the bbq or fire pit in the rain. The location is quiet, away from the main road and Richard, who runs the place was super friendly and helpful. Delicious fish to buy onsite, but a 10 minute drive outside of Barnstable if you need extras. The location was good for exploring the North coast. We've already recommended this place to several friends. We'll certainly be retuning!

Emma and I really enjoyed our stay at the wonderful Mayfly. On our arrival we lit the log burner and enjoyed the salmon that was left in the fridge for us by our hosts. We spent a lovely evening cuddled up watching TV and enjoying the very serene views from the double doors leading to the deck. The bed was so comfortable and the cabin was very clean, modern and a joy to be in. We spent a few lovely days visiting Ilfracombe, Woolacombe and various other places in the surrounding area and returning to the cabin every night was just the best. Thanks to Richard and the guys at The Mayfly and both Emma and I, highly recommend that you take a long weekend stay at this beautiful cabin.
31/03/2023Robert
Absolutely wonderful stay. Hosts are so welcoming and friendly and really want you to treat the cabin as your own. Views of the ponds are great and have a great balance between privacy but also spectacle at feeding time.

Really comfy lodge, clean, well-equipped and in a fab setting; lots of nature on your doorstep. Didn't have great weather, but didn't matter.

23/12/2022Y
We had a great stay. Total hygge! Lovely hosts, great location , fly fishing, cosy fire , even bad weather added to the cosiness! Great smoked salmon and lovely walks by the lake ! Would have loved to stay there forever !!

We absolutely loved our stay at Mayfly, the owners were so friendly and helpful throughout and the setting was stunning. It was lovely to be tucked away within the lakes at the fishery and was a perfect location to explore Devon from. Coming back to the log burner each evening as well was a highlight!

We had a lovely stay in the Mayfly cabin. The cabin itself was beautifully furnished and well equipped. The surroundings were stunning and so relaxing. We sat outside on the decking enjoying the amazing views of the lakes and enjoying the complimentary wine and trout which were left in the fridge for us. The owners were extremely friendly and helpful. We met one other couple who were staying in the other cabin but otherwise we had the whole place to ourselves. We very much enjoyed the peace and quiet. For us, this was the perfect place for a break and will definitely be coming back.

Mayfly Cabin is a comfortable lodge in a lovely setting. Sitting on the veranda looking over the lake is so peaceful and having other lakes to explore adds to the experience. The owners were friendly and helpful and having milk, wine and smoked trout on arrival was a nice touch. You have the choice to either stay and relax or go further afield as the cabin is in a good location for exploring north Devon. This cabin offers you the chance to switch off, relax and enjoy the settings. John was very welcoming and made us feel at home. You can explore the lakes, use the picnic benches, why not take your evening tipple by the water to watch sunset.

This cabin offers you the chance to switch off, relax and enjoy the settings. John was very welcoming and made us feel at home. You can explore the lakes, use the picnic benches, why not take your evening tipple by the water to watch sunset.

Absolutely amazing. Loved every moment. Peaceful location with wildlife around. Opportunity to fish if you wanted to. Accomodating hosts, nothing was too much trouble for Richard and John .
