Overview
Nowadays, there’s new glamping spaces popping up all around the U.K. But at Low Nest Farm, they’ve been welcoming guests to their huts for 100 years – how’s that for experience? Somehow this magical space is in the heart of the wild, and only a mile to the local shops, and 500 metres to a bus stop, as well as being accessible by public transport. The space has uninterrupted views across the valley, all the way to the Helvellyn mountain range – one of the most dramatic views imaginable in the Lake district, let alone the country.
Closer to home, there’s a small flock of chickens, runner ducks, and occasionally sheep that run around the yard, and surrounding fields – whose eggs are available, complimentary, upon request (no sheep eggs though sadly). Directly outside, you’ll find the Japanese spa bath, extra deep and extra wide, this soaking tub is somewhere for the mud and stresses to melt away alike, with the same stellar views. Inside, you’ll find all you need and more, the full double bed, shower and toilet, and kitchenette. We get glamping envy just thinking about the view in the pitter patter of inclement weather, as equally as the idea of stepping out the fully opening bifold doors, to the majesty of summer sun setting behind the fells.

Meet your hosts
Meet Alasdair & Heather
Alasdair was brought up in Kendal and spent his youth running around the fells. He moved south to become a professional sailor, where he met Heather. Together they spent many years sailing the UK's coasts before deciding to settle down at Low Nest Farm. They have a shared passion for introducing people to this beautiful location.
Their daughter moved into the farm in 2019, and as a family they holistically manage 90 acres of land around the farm. Thanks to the work the family have done, over the coming years the farm will start to see more native bred livestock, wildflowers, trees, hedges and wildlife.
Wildlife & The Environment
The wildflower meadows attract a wide range of birds and wildlife including herons, buzzards, owls, hawks, swallows, swifts and other bird life. The farm also get lots of deer passing through the meadows. The farm is part of the UNESCO Lake District National Park. At present the water and treatment is all off grid. In the coming years the family aim to introduce solar power and off-grid heating to the farm.
The 90 acre farm is in the process of being rewilded holistically. The family plan to plant several thousand metres of hedgerows, plant a couple thousand trees and help reintroduce wildflower meadows. There are only 9000 acres of Northern wildflower meadows left, and Low Nest Farm will soon account for 40 acres of this. The farm also work with a local rivers trust to help mitigate flooding, by strategically putting in leaky dams to slow the flow of flood water.

Our guests say...
Clare
We had a lovely, peaceful stay at Helvellyn Hut as we explored the Lake District. The view from the hut was remarkable and the hosts kindly kept us well stocked with wood for the burner. There were excellent walks nearby and several options for getting into Keswick. This spot felt nicely out of the way and yet within easy access of lakes in the surrounding areas.
25/11/2024Danielle
The hut was lovely and had everything we needed for a relaxing weekend away. The views were beautiful and it was exactly the escape to the countryside we imagined.
15/11/2024Katy
The stay at the Helvellyn Hut was incredible! The views were amazing and the hut was perfect for a long weekend. So cozy! The log fire kept the cabin nice and warm on a night and the Japanese bath was amazing to sit in and look out across the mountains. Low Nest farms itself is really quiet which was nice for relaxing! The owners were amazing just leaving us to enjoy our stay but if we needed anything right there to help.
01/11/2024Jessica
A lovely secluded cabin with fantastic views!! Booked a few dates away to de stress, really helped as in the process of buying a house. Cosy and peaceful!
09/10/2024Melissa
We had the most amazing time, Heather our host made sure that attention to detail for our arrival was utterly stunning. A perfect 2 days in the wilderness for our mini honeymoon.
04/09/2024Lou
Fabulous location in the Lakes; great and comfortable hut with excellent heat and sound insulation, very cosy. The bath was fantastic! Walks are all around and the 555 bus is on your doorstep to take you to the start of a walk to Helvellyn or as far as Lancaster.
23/08/2024Dan
Helvellyn Hut is truly outstanding! When I saw the pictures of the views on the website I thought surely it can’t look that good but I can confirm they really do! The setting is breath taking, I don’t think I’ll ever have a more relaxing and picturesque bath in my life! The hut is extremely clean and well thought out. It has everything you will need for your stay. The fresh eggs are a lovely touch and the hosts are very helpful. The fridge is quite small so be mindful of this when deciding how much food to bring. You are close to Keswick in the car but you wouldn’t know that when you’re in the hut, it is so quiet and peaceful. I will recommend Helvellyn Hut to everybody!
12/08/2024Grace

We had a wonderful stay at Helvellyn Hut. Even though it rained all week, we were warm and comfortable inside with the log burner and plenty of blankets provided. The view was gorgeous and we spent our one rain-free evening enjoying a soak in the hot spa bath looking out across the hills. Everything we needed was there and it was surprising how much could be fitted into a small space. The laundry room provided was very useful, and the complimentary eggs from the farm much appreciated! Thank you so much for a wonderful holiday
