Overview
Dragon Cruck feels like it grew out of the woods that surround it, which, given the very local sourcing of the timber, it pretty much did. Tree surgeon Mike and his team crafted every inch of the quiet spot among the trees, from the curve of the camp kitchen roof to the dragon joint for which the cabin is named. The result is an open, peaceful space where you can drift from the kitchen to the deck, from the fire bowl to bed. Not forgetting the pizza oven to add to the outdoor cooking experience! In the evening, candles, solar lighting and lanterns plus the glow of the wood-burner fill the cabin and its clearing with a soft light and let the stars shine through. Step outside on to the deck to glimpse a view of the Vyrnwy Valley stretching away into the distance. About 25m away from the cabin you’ll find the compost loo and 100m away the shower pod.
The Vyrnwy valley isn’t just great to look at, but also for wild swimming, canoeing and picnic spots in the hills. Mike is a mountain guide as well as a craftsman and can set you off on hiking routes as challenging or gentle as you like. Snowdonia is just an hour away, but trails straight from the door could keep you busy for days. If you’re looking for a calmer stay, then visit Shrewsbury, ride the Welshpool steam train, drop into Powis castle or explore Montgomery, a quaint castle town with great cafés and a Michelin star pub. To avoid getting back in the car, make the 10-minute walk to the local shop at Meifod, where you can stock up on cooking basics or a bottle of wine. Mike and Rachel thoroughly recommend the Derwen Farm Shop too.

We had a lovely 3 night stay and thoroughly enjoyed our visit to mid Wales it’s a beautiful country. The Dragon Cruck is skilfully made and is pretty amazing, it was warm comfortable a real treasure find! We loved it!

The heavenly serenity and peace of this place hit us the moment we arrived. It was a magical place. We wanted for nothing. Every detail had been thought of by hosts Mike and Rach and nothing too much for them to help us with. So restorative to get back to nature. We will definitely be returning.
29/07/2024Alison
Wonderful, felt connected with nature but whilst also managing to be snug during some downpours.
14/06/2024Abby
Had a great stay at the Dragon Cruck, Mike was friendly and gave us some good walking tips. The place itself is beautiful and so peaceful, everything is well thought through. I was a bit worried about going in October as I thought it might be too cold but the log burner makes it so cosy and snug.
12/10/2023Alice
We had an absolutely lovely time. The Dragon Cruck was magical. Peace and quite and lots of wildlife around to watch. Mike and Rachel were very helpful with suggestions of places to go and see
21/08/2023Penny
Perfect. Every detail has been considered and catered for. As soon as we arrived we were planning our next stay.
14/08/2023Gordon
We stayed for 4 days, 3 nights from 15th July until 18th for our 30th Wedding anniversary. It was superb a total departure from the normal stuff we do but the tranquility the space and the relaxation was fantastic. Its an enchanting place and whilst the facilities are 'basic' its great to get back to nature and doing a bit yourself, chopping kindling etc was a bit unexpected but we loved it and we are definitely going back with friends or family who can have the sleepout across the field. The track isn't as bad as we thought it might be to get there and even the rubbish weather was all part of the stay watching the rain lashing whilst in front of your log burner. Can't praise it enough
15/07/2023Christopher
The Dragon Cruck is a beautifully crafted sustainability paradise, set in a lovely woodland with a glorious view up the valley. We felt truly at ease and relaxed here. Our hosts provided all we needed and left us to it. Wonderful.

24/12/2022Amelia
This is a special place. For us it was the perfect combination of cooking and eating outside, being right in the middle of nature BUT with a beautiful cosy indoor space with a comfortable bed, woolly blankets, fairy lights and all the views. We didn't want for anything - thanks to the info we received beforehand and all the special touches from Mike and Rachel. We will definitely return for another proper break from busy lives.
21/10/2022fee
Dragon Cruck is a beautiful escape from the world and into nature. Beautifully put together to sit in nature with views over the valley. We lounged in the hammock, made pizza in the pizza oven and went for walks up the hill.
26/08/2022Catherine
Absolutely brilliant. The Dragon’s Cruck was beautifully designed with super little details both inside and outside the cabin. The hosts Rachel and Mike had a real eye for detail. The eating area was well stocked with all the kitchen equipment we needed. A beautiful area to walk in, in a lovely part of the country. We will definitely be going back to stay there again.
15/08/2022Louise
Our stay at Dragon Cruck was absolutely fantastic. It was exactly what we needed to reset and ground ourselves after a busy few months in the city. Dragon Cruck is so well equipped with everything you need. You really do only need to take food and clothes with you! The scenery all around is stunning.

If you are looking for a relaxing piece of solitude this is the place for you. Simply amazing place to stay.

Absolutely fabulous place to stay. The pictures were exactly as it was. Beautiful setting, well equipped, comfortable. Clean, warm with the wood burner, fabulous walks. Just a perfect 3 days.
18/10/2021Sally
The building and craftsmanship is so impressive and the small details throughout really make it, from the log lined path up to the property, to the hammock and fairy lights. Lots of thought has been put into it, lovely area with views. Wished we had stayed for longer. Great escape from the world.
01/10/2021Carly
We've done a few glamping trips and this is definitely a new favourite. The setting and the build itself is so beautiful. It felt like an absolute treat everyday waking up here and coming back to the cabin after exploring the nearby lake and waterfalls. We didn't miss anything about home for the four days we were here. A great escape.
17/09/2021Amy
Relaxing, peaceful, beautiful, lovely, wonderful
20/08/2021Noel
A very restful "off grid" experience. All the essentials taken care of but remote enough to be able to switch off and enjoy the natural surroundings for a week. Perfectly private and isolated in a beautiful light piece of woodland with wildflower meadow adjacent.
07/08/2021Sarah
Absolutely magical place. So beautiful, quiet and comfortable
09/07/2021Marie
We loved our stay at the Dragon Cruck, it was relaxing and peaceful and like nowhere else we've stayed before. We loved the magical little touches that made it even more special.
06/07/2021Megan
Perfect, magical place. Totally private and peaceful. A wonderful place built with love and combining the dragon building style with the dragon of Wales. Beautiful surroundings and lovely hosts.
28/06/2021Deborah
We were absolutely delighted with Dragon Cruck. It was a wonderful innovative design, full of exposed wood, beautifully crafted, and set in idyllic woodland on a hillside. The outdoor kitchen was a joy to cook in - particularly the pizza oven - and there was an array of seating, all with lovely views over the valley and fields. Everything was beautifully presented, with many clever, fun touches. It felt a luxurious holiday - but also eco-friendly (good for the conscience and soul) and we really relished the local walks and the chance to just enjoy the trees, plants and wildlife. The hosts, Rachel and Mike, were friendly and welcoming, albeit at a necessary distance during these Covid times!
25/06/2021jenny
We had a magical weekend at Dragon Cruck for our anniversary. The cabin was beautiful and had so many sweet intricate aspects. We enjoyed the peace and privacy tucked away into the forest and didn't come across anyone else the whole time. Using the walking guides and maps we went on a few walks without having to drive anywhere and swam in the river nearby. We made lots of delicious food in the outdoor kitchen including pizza in the pizza oven! We were so sad to leave, would definitely book again!
18/06/2021Steph
Although the weather was great too - we loved this place. The view, the flowers, the woods, the facilities - it was so totally wonderful.
01/06/2021Rob
We had the most wonderful 3 nights here, so relaxing, it was lovely to switch off. The views are spectacular and the accommodation is beautiful. Can’t recommend it enough.
24/05/2021Rachael
A welcome break from the hamster wheel of life. Beautiful setting and fabulous facilities. Very friendly and welcoming hosts
10/05/2021Sophy
We stayed for a long weekend at the Dragon Cruck house. It’s beautifully crafted and very unique, and had all the home comforts you needed. Scenery was spectacular, we didn’t really leave the local area but found plenty of nice places to walk. The kitchen was brilliant and very well equipped and all the little unique decorative touches were so clever and whimsical, we were always spotting new things. The compost loo was a sweet little addition and not too far to stumble in the middle of the night! The little honesty shop was great too, I could have spent hours in there and lots of money! My partner absolutely loved chopping wood and getting the fire going!
16/04/2021Lauren
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at dragons cruck, Mike and Rachel were very accommodating and lovely! The cabin itself is absolutely breathtaking and the views are enough to make you want to stay longer! You can tell the cabin has been made with lots of thought and love as the woodwork is very impressive
09/04/2021Mali
A beautiful and relaxing place to stay. Lovely and warm with the wood burner! A little bit of a trek to the shower, but that's the only down side. Really loved it, and we are hoping to go back in the summer.
19/11/2020Helen
Impressive cabin and really enjoyed using the pizza oven. Staying at Dragon Cruck has been a cool experience.

11/09/2020Alex
We booked a couple of nights for my wifes birthday and we had the most amazing time. We have 2 young children so we had a couple of days getaway just the two of us and it was the most relaxing beautiful place we could imagine... amazing little walks, sitting outside making fires and homemade pizzas in the pizza oven and drinking cocktails. We'll definitely be booking again for next year as it couldn't have been more perfect
02/09/2020Liam
Wonderful, peaceful break from reality.
29/08/2020Dawm
This is an amazing cabin in the woods. We went to celebrate my husband's 40th & had the most chilled out weekend. The weather wasn't the best but we felt very sheltered in the outdoor seating area with the fire blazing. Inside is so cosy & magical with the fairy lights, candles & woodstove as well as the king sized bed which was the most comfortable bed ever! Amazing views across the valley and lots of lovely walking in your doorstep. We will definitely return.
21/08/2020Rachel
Absolutely fantastic!! An amazing location to relax, unwind and explore the local area. The pizza oven is a lovely addition and if you fancy a drink or food out there is a vert nice local about 15mins walk just down the hill over a picturesque river. In the evening you can relax by the fire and take it the surroundings. Perfect location to watch the sunset. We went to celebrate our wedding anniversary and we have memories that we will never forget form staying at Dragon Cruck. We will definitely be back!!
18/07/2020Ian
A place to step out of the race and into nature. Creative genius, dragons cruck was truly mesmarising in every way, from the moment you step out of the car,the silence and fresh air hits you. The magical walk into the woods to find the cruck instantly woke my imagination and excitment for the adventure about to begin. seeing this amazing structure gently placed in such a perfect sight over looking mountains as far as the eye can see,I was in total awe of the craftsmanship, time and effort it had taken to create such a thing of beauty. Warm and inviting it takes you back to basics. Learning to build fires with my hubby, cooking out in the brilliantly made kitchen where you'll find a pizza oven as well as every thing you need to cook a slap up meal or cooking hotdogs over the fire. Waking to the smell of wood and looking out over the horizon helped me to revive ready for work and home life again daily walks leading from the cruck in every direction, easy to find and helpfully mapped out in the welcome book provided. Such a special place and the hosts were brilliant, anything you need they were happy to help! Cant wait to go back!
06/03/2020Keli
We chose dragon cruck because its seemed remote and peaceful, just from the photos it seemed like something out of a fairy tale but the photos really didn't do it any justice, when we got there it was beautiful the view was amazing and it was just everything we had hoped for
02/03/2020India
Fantastic stay at Dragon Cruck. From the moment we arrived we fell in love with the place. The facilities where outstanding and location was perfect. The cabin itself was beautiful and was so warm and cosy, even though we stayed here in the middle of winter. The Pizza Oven was a nice touch, which we used daily. We can't wait to return, such a inspiring place.
31/12/2019Robert
Love every second!! Fabulous property, lovely hosts and a wonderful location. Enjoyed getting back to basics by chopping firewood and spending the evenings playing board games under candle light. Highly recommend and can’t wait to visit again!
28/12/2019Alex
Absolutely amazing stay. Great setting and location. Both Mike and Rachel were lovely too! Very welcoming and friendly. I would reccomend this to anyone.
11/12/2019Harvey
Mike has hand crafted an amazing getaway. All the little details like the fairy toilet to the little dragons. I stayed in wind and rain and the kitchen although outside was well sheltered and had everything you could need. I highly recommend people to stay here.
09/12/2019Felicity
We had the most amazing and relaxing time. Peace, tranquility and billions of stars! Loved every minute.
25/10/2019Steve
We had a short 2 night stay at Dragon Cruck and loved it! It was a really special place, very peaceful and tucked away from the world. The pizza oven was a highlight and the cabin was perfect for the 2 of us. Would highly recommend!
13/10/2019Kate
Unusual property in country location
06/10/2019Karen
The site was beautifully placed to be easily accessible and yet hidden in the trees. The craftsmanship in the building is wonderful, lots of care and attention to detail. I loved the dragons feet hinges to the arched window doors. The weather was appalling but we were warm and comfortable with the wood burner on and enjoyed our adventure with the pizza oven and cooking in the outdoor kitchen. From September onwards, an inside light source, stronger than the tea lights provided, was needed, as it was dark by 7.00. Apart from that it was a perfect get away.
26/09/2019Kate
A wonderful off grid hut in the woods.
23/09/2019Paul
Amazing place to stay. Connect with nature. So comfortable. Hosts very friendly.
17/09/2019Dave&carol
We had a most relaxing 3-day weekend here and felt completely away from everything. It's a remarkable place and impressively crafted by Mike. It's so well equipped too - bring supplies and you're set. We cooked over the fire pit and made pizzas in the over. There's a great walk from the cabin and plenty to see in the surrounding area. Little touches such as a jug of herbs show how much thought is put into this place. We'd love to go back!
06/09/2019Patrick
Absolutely Phenomenal! A truly fairly tale place for a magical honeymoon for a pair of outdoorsy types. The atmosphere was unbeatable and facilities were suited to all our needs.
02/09/2019Dawn
We was absolutely amazed by the dragons cruck, the workmanship is outstanding. It was very peaceful with beautiful views. We loved the pizza oven. The hosts were very pleasant and helpful. What an incredibly stunning place to spend our honeymoon. It was everything we wanted and more. Beautiful scenery to match the outstanding craftsmanship. We loved snoozing in the hammock, baking pizzas, sitting by the fire and calling this a home from home. Totally heartwarming.
13/07/2019Nikki
This place is amazing, beautifully crafted, hidden in the woods. We managed to make a pizza, quite successfully. The fire inside keeps you nice and warm, the bed comfortable and the kitchen has everything you need. Such a relaxing place to stay and just be. Mike was very welcoming and knowledgeable. Highly recommend and have already recommended to family and friends

We had a delightful, memorable honeymoon at the Dragon Cruck. It is such a beautiful creation, so quiet, beautifully situated amidst nature, and absolutely private. Our hosts were kind and discrete, and everything was perfectly prepared for our stay. We would love to go back...

It was perfect, everything was thought out so carefully to create a truly homely and relaxing stay. It was beautifully crafted and we loved the getting back to nature feel of the candles, firepit, pizza oven etc whilst still being cosy with everything we needed. We were made to feel completely at home, and felt like we had our own little world, absolutely just what we were wanting.
11/03/2019Felicity
We had an amazing stay the first time in September, we knew we would be back! It was just as incredible this time around and lovely to see the changing seasons in the surrounding woodland. I also wanted to propose to my long time Girlfriend Lucy, which I did on the second night, by the fire. This place is truly special to us now.
16/11/2018Matt
Fantastic, just what we needed to escape the usual errands of daily life. Beautiful surroundings and the cabin was the product of some very impressive craftsmanship. We were concerned it would be cold but even when it dropped down to minus 6 we were completely unaware of how cold it was as it was so cosy in our cabin. We enjoyed cooking outside taking in the autumnal nature around us.

It was the most wonderful stay and we have stayed in some beautiful places in the past. This was one we will treasure in our memories.. Dragons Cruck was so beautifully crafted and had such luxury to everything that was in the living area and the most fabulous outside space. To wake up to such a beautiful view in an amazing and comfy bed was amazing. The leaves were all colours when looking through the beautiful window with the log fire keeping you cosy. This is a place for true relaxation.. The outside space was fab, you didn't want for anything. The Pizza oven was a blast! it cooked our pizza in a minute and everything else in the kitchen area was great. The room with the loo has the best view ! take some time to enjoy it lol but watch out for the fairies! you will see what I mean when you get there. I cannot recommended this place enough . A massive shout out to the hosts for sharing such a magical place

We had the most amazing stay at the Dragon Cruck! The accommodation itself was an absolute masterpiece of craftsmanship and the facilities were perfect for glamping. It felt very wild and secluded but with the right amount of home comforts. The Pizza oven and log burners were fantastic to use and really added to the experience. The location is great for walks in the forest which we took advantage of numerous times. Over all the best C&S stay we have had so far. we are already looking to return next year!

Dragon Cruck is a very special place - somewhere to relax, reflect, collect your thoughts and re-evaluate life’s priorities. We had a lovely time, tranquil two night’s stay and we will dfinately be visiting again.

It was absolutely amazing; never in my life have I seen such a brilliant place, handmade and made with love over a two year period by the owners. It is newly let and we were only about the 4th paying guests. We were stunned by it’s beauty. It was incredibly well equipped with a fantastic kitchen area, jam packed with everything we needed and more. The towels & linen, even the t-towels were beautifully laundered and crisp & both the washing up area and cabin were a sight to behold. It smelled amazing, a mixture of wood and woodsmoke with a hint of lavender-even a jug of fresh sweet peas awaited us with welsh cakes and raspberries-we loved every minute!! The toilet was like something from a fairytale; like Rapunzel’s loo! The shower was incredible too, great handmade touch and a beautiful spiral roof with an abundance of lovely hot water too. Owners on site and contactable by mobile telephone. Rachel even texted to ask our ETA and they were there to meet and welcome us. Breakfast hamper was incredible; all local produce - sausage, bacon, eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes, butter, apple juice etc, was a delight to cook and eat.

Just got back from an incredible overnight stay at the Dragon Cruck. The location is in a beautiful & secluded part of Powys, with the rather rough & rocky entrance track complementing the final stage of the journey into what feels like the middle of nowhere. Discovering the Dragon Cruck itself is an experience, it's a tree surgeon & carpenters combined work of art, using natural wood shapes to create a unique pair of structures nestled in the woodland. Our stay was very peaceful & relaxing, with more than enough amenities to make it a comfortable experience while still feeling like a little adventure. Highly recommended!

We're super excited to be adding Rachel & Mike's latest space. A wonderful addition to the collection. The feedback for The Sleepout should give you a good feel for what it will be like. Book a stay and be the first to write a review!

The heavenly serenity and peace of this place hit us the moment we arrived. It was a magical place. We wanted for nothing. Every detail had been thought of by hosts Mike and Rach and nothing too much for them to help us with. So restorative to get back to nature. We will definitely be returning.

Wonderful, felt connected with nature but whilst also managing to be snug during some downpours.

Had a great stay at the Dragon Cruck, Mike was friendly and gave us some good walking tips. The place itself is beautiful and so peaceful, everything is well thought through. I was a bit worried about going in October as I thought it might be too cold but the log burner makes it so cosy and snug.

We had an absolutely lovely time. The Dragon Cruck was magical. Peace and quite and lots of wildlife around to watch. Mike and Rachel were very helpful with suggestions of places to go and see

Perfect. Every detail has been considered and catered for. As soon as we arrived we were planning our next stay.

The Dragon Cruck is a beautifully crafted sustainability paradise, set in a lovely woodland with a glorious view up the valley. We felt truly at ease and relaxed here. Our hosts provided all we needed and left us to it. Wonderful.

Our stay at Dragon Cruck was absolutely fantastic. It was exactly what we needed to reset and ground ourselves after a busy few months in the city. Dragon Cruck is so well equipped with everything you need. You really do only need to take food and clothes with you! The scenery all around is stunning.

Absolutely fabulous place to stay. The pictures were exactly as it was. Beautiful setting, well equipped, comfortable. Clean, warm with the wood burner, fabulous walks. Just a perfect 3 days.

The building and craftsmanship is so impressive and the small details throughout really make it, from the log lined path up to the property, to the hammock and fairy lights. Lots of thought has been put into it, lovely area with views. Wished we had stayed for longer. Great escape from the world.

Perfect, magical place. Totally private and peaceful. A wonderful place built with love and combining the dragon building style with the dragon of Wales. Beautiful surroundings and lovely hosts.

Although the weather was great too - we loved this place. The view, the flowers, the woods, the facilities - it was so totally wonderful.

A welcome break from the hamster wheel of life. Beautiful setting and fabulous facilities. Very friendly and welcoming hosts

A beautiful and relaxing place to stay. Lovely and warm with the wood burner! A little bit of a trek to the shower, but that's the only down side. Really loved it, and we are hoping to go back in the summer.

Wonderful, peaceful break from reality.

We chose dragon cruck because its seemed remote and peaceful, just from the photos it seemed like something out of a fairy tale but the photos really didn't do it any justice, when we got there it was beautiful the view was amazing and it was just everything we had hoped for

Mike has hand crafted an amazing getaway. All the little details like the fairy toilet to the little dragons. I stayed in wind and rain and the kitchen although outside was well sheltered and had everything you could need. I highly recommend people to stay here.

We had a short 2 night stay at Dragon Cruck and loved it! It was a really special place, very peaceful and tucked away from the world. The pizza oven was a highlight and the cabin was perfect for the 2 of us. Would highly recommend!

Amazing place to stay. Connect with nature. So comfortable. Hosts very friendly.
