Overview
Peaceful, quiet and secluded, The Duck Hut has uninterrupted and unspoilt views over the rolling meadows leading up to the Shropshire Hills, and the nearest building to you is owner Frankie’s house, just behind you.
Beginning life as fishing and shooting hut in the 1940s, when Frankie found it, it had seen decades of neglect, but had enough to be carefully restored. Now, it’s the very thing you picture when you say you want an escape to a cabin in the wild.
Walk through the fields and up into the hills from the doorstep, prepare food in the indoor kitchen or cook alfresco on the covered gas BBQ or over glowing coals in the fire pit. Sip a cold glass of wine whilst relaxing amongst the trees listening to the leaves rustling in the breeze, or spotting wildlife with the binoculars.
If hunger strikes, there’s plenty of spots in the locale to grab a pub lunch, but you may simply prefer to load up on supplies from the local shop in Chirbury. There’s some patchy phone signal, and wifi by the owner’s house, but this is the kind of place you’ll relish being unreachable, especially, when swinging in the breeze on the hammock, on a warm day.
If you’re travelling with friends or The Duck Hut isn’t available for your dates, try Kinton Cloud-House.

Daria
A perfectly relaxing time in The Duck Hut. After a warm welcome by Frankie, I didn’t see or speak to another living soul for 3 days. No phone signal, no WiFi, no tv. Just me, a couple of good books, the fire and nature. The little wooden seat is surprisingly comfortable! I spent most of my time on it, only stopping to have a cup of tea on the porch rocking chair. I sincerely hope to make this an annual autumn ritual.

Well the reviews did not lie, the Duck Hut really was a delightful place to stay in a super location. And all the details that Frankie has thought about do make a difference, it's been lovingly created, you can really feel it.

We had an amazing stay. Frankie is a great host; The Duck Hut is so chilled, cosy and rustic. Private apart from the sheep; a great place to connect with nature, yourself and whoever you choose to share this space with. No shops local so to make the most of your stay; shop before you journey out of the nearest town Shrewsbury or Welshpool. Highly recommend - Ps no signal so pretty off grid - perfect to switch off but also to be aware of.

Fabulous as usual. We love this place, a real escape, off grid and perfect. All seasons in one day. Comfy bed, great view, sheeps, owls and fresh air. Powys castle is a great National Trust place to visit and Montgomery is great. Delightful.

We had a fantastic stay with Frankie! The hut is perfect with all the amenities you could want, a super comfy bed, and an incredible view. Frankie is a generous host and shared lots of top tips. Absolutely recommend!

The Duck Hut is a stunning, peaceful place to relax and take in the surroundings. The hut has all of your essential, everything has been thought of. The log burner is easy to get started, Frankie has made sure there is everything you need and you can contact her if you need any assistance. It’s a cosy hut, you can cook a full meal in there no problem, the toilet and shower hut is clean and has fresh towels, toilet rolls, hand wash and body wash. The shower is lovely and warm. It’s a beautiful place and we will be booking again.

This place is magical. Frankie has created the perfect cabin - simplicity, beauty, functionality. I felt so restored staying here - the comfort, the views, the walks, the extraordinary ancient oak trees, the stone circle. I can't wait to go again.

Wonderful host, cabin was idyllic and the view was picture perfect. We took advantage of the BBQ and firept which were welcome additions and the hut is so tranquil you could get lost init forever. One of those places you know you have to come back to.

This was the most blissful stay from beginning to end. The fabulous Duck Hut surpassed all of our expectations and had every comfort we could have wished for and more! We tore ourselves away from gazing at the beautiful scenery from the hut (and cute lambs) to explore the area on foot, taking in the creatively carved church, stone circle, hill top and perfectly timed pub visit just a few fields away from our little relaxing sanctuary. Cooking on the BBQ was fantastic and sitting to enjoy a meal and wine watching the sunset a perfect end each day. A fabulous get-away from it all, thank you!
25/06/2023Georgina
This is hands down the best self-catering accommodation I have ever stayed at in the UK. The setting is absolutely surreal, the hut itself is perfect and Frankie the host is a gem. And the two pooches, Onesie and Widget are the cherry on top.
24/03/2023Cuillen
A perfect relaxing escape. It is the third time we have stayed at the Duck Hut and we keep going back because it is so wonderful. Frankie the owner has thought of everything…superb view, lovely sitting areas, a big comfy bed and all the equipment to knock up some fabulous meals and enjoy by the campfire. We will keep going back there until we are unable to climb up the ladder to bed!

My girlfriend and I started the new year in the most wonderful way possible staying here. The Duck Hut is magical and the environment around it is breathtakingly serene. What Frankie has created is a slice of paradise and we hope to return to it one day!

05/11/2021Sarah
Brilliant getaway as always at the Duck Hut - a real retreat and a chance to switch off!
29/10/2021Sarah
Truly very special place. Not only the story of how it came to be at Kinton, the character, despite it being effectively one room, its wonderfully thoughtout, the decoration with the Hare stained glass, the view (wow wow wow) and the wonderful hospitality of Frankie and Wigit the Dog!
20/09/2021karen
We had an absolutely wonderful, chilled few days at the Duck Hut. Frankie and Widget were the perfect hosts
13/09/2021Nikki
It's was bliss! From arrival to exit, Frankie was amazing and warm. The place was perfect. Location ideal. All in all, amazing and definitely worth visiting over and over again.
16/07/2021Quin
magical retreat into nature for a couple of days with the luxuries of this rustic hut. my partner and I certainly took advantage of the facilities from the incredible outdoor gas bbq to the hammock. everything was perfect! a very friendly and welcoming host.
16/06/2021Holly
Fell in love with the hostess and the place itself. A magical pause from a turbulent year has left us in a state of ease. The stone circle up on the Shropshire hills gave healing powers which rippled throughout our stay. It was the most gorgeous place which allowed both the wilderness in and comfort with the beautifully crafted circa 1940s renovated hut. A real treat which we hope to visit again.
14/06/2021Lutia
We choose the Duck Hut because we had stayed at another of the owners properties before. We loved the location and knew the property would have everything we wanted and we were not disappointed. It's a lovely place and beautifully and thoughtfully furnished. Frankie, the host, is amazing. Super welcoming yet totally unobtrusive but its great to know she's on hand for a chat or directions or top up in provisions if required. The view from the Hut looked amazing on the site and it did not disappoint.. We had a wonderful stay and will definitely return.
04/06/2021Mandy
A wonderful week away in a tranquil setting. Just what I needed! The hut was cosy and well equipped, the views were stunning, the local area was amazing to explore, and Frankie was the perfect host.
31/05/2021Jon
Really beautiful, peaceful escape in the heart of Shropshire. Perfect host, welcoming and really friendly. The duck hut was compact and cosy with lots of little personal touches, everything you need, candles, blankets, binoculars for bird watching, the view of the wildlife was amazing. You could purchase freshly laid eggs and home made jam and pickles from Frankie and if you needed anything else you could just ask. Lovely walks to go on and nearby milking cows that were so sociable!
27/05/2021Hayley
We had a wonderful stay at The Duck Hut and Frankie was a great host! The perfect secluded location for getting away from the city with the Shropshire Hills right on the doorstep. The hut itself was comfortable with all the amenities we could have wanted and the all important log burner for cosy nights in.
26/10/2020Tom
Wonderful stay at the Duck Hut, I wish we'd booked longer, 2 nights was not enough. Frankie was a wonderful host, friendly, welcoming and helpful. It was everything we'd hoped for and much more, I would 100% recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing get away. We can't wait to return!
18/09/2020Olivia
We had a really enjoyable stay at the Duck Hut, spending two nights in total for my birthday. We explored the local area on foot, climbing hills and walking fields. The weather made the trip perfect. We had all the amenities we needed and our host was next door if we had any queries. Our host had even put up some happy birthday bunting outside the hut!
11/09/2020Sarah
The Duck Hut has been beautifully converted, with obvious care. I was thrilled to experience some inclement weather so I could get the woodburner going and it truly is a cosy hideway from reality. The views are stunning - sitting on front porch watching the skies change and listening to the wildlife was better than any television show and a clear night allowed me to spot the smudge of the Milky Way behind the more usual stars. Blissful, beautiful 'silence' - not absence of noise, as I fell asleep listening to sheep, owls and all manner of critters. But silence of the usual noise by which we are so often surrounded. The platform bed lent an adventurous feel to my 'book and hot chocolate' bedtime routine, and the seating underneath is ideal for a pillow and blanket fort. The bathroom hut is comfortable, with a great spacious (and hot) shower - much appreciated after a walk into the hills to a nearby stone circle. I visited Much Wenlock and Oswestry for yarn shop indulgences, and had dinner one night in Shrewsbury. Even with those excursions, I was always keen to run back to the Hut for more calm, quiet and joyful relaxation - and a quick fuss with Widget, the gorgeous host dog.
24/08/2020Sarah
Fantastic, warm, cozy getaway. Comfortable and had everything we needed. Just the right balance of rusticity and modern conveniences. Frankie has done an excellent job on the hut and the bathroom facilities. Even in gale force winds and rain we slept soundly after a night in front of the log burner. Frankie is a fabulous host, was there when we needed any advice on the area and welcomed us on our first night like we were part of the family which was lovely after being on the car for 3 hours. We will definitely come back, and recommend it fully for a romantic cozy getaway.
21/02/2020Jack
We found The duck hut very warm cosy & welcoming, temperature outdoors about 4 degrees but with the wood burner got indoors up to 30 degrees. After managing the burner, a bit better, a comfortable 20 degrees. The attention to detail inside was above & beyond the call of duty. Frankie our hostess couldn’t do enough for us. She is a kind sweet lady. There are a few eating & drinking establishments a short drive away if you want to go out and a few towns to visit as well. There is a walk you can take across the fields and right up to the top of the hill that overlooks the Duck Hut. All in all, a beautiful quiet relaxing 4 days to unwind. Getting there is simple if you follow Frankie’s instructions. in fact, Frankie’s instructions start at one of the pubs you can visit. The last part of the journey is up a farm track approx. 1.4km long across half a dozen or so fields. The track is heavily potholed and takes a while but strangely enough after doing it a few times becomes part of the appeal of the place. This trip was for Zoë’s birthday which was on the 14th Feb and in our view, we made an excellent choice.
11/02/2020paul
We stayed for 3 nights but it wasn't really long enough as we enjoyed it so much and didn't want to leave! Frankie, our host, was very warm, welcoming and helpful. She suggested a walk to us that went into the hills so we did that one of the days and thoroughly enjoyed it. The facilities were great with so many options for cooking. We can't wait to come back.
13/08/2019Bethany
The duck hut is excellent - cosy, clean, spacious and everything you need for a weekend stay. Amazing views!

Fantastic place, small but big enough to house everything you need and not feel cramped. Views out across the countryside are fantastic. Lots of facilities with electric hobs and oven. Loved the raised cabin bed with seating underneath. Plenty of walking to be had nearby from the cabin, although some footpaths aren't signed.

We're super excited to be adding Frankie's latest space. A wonderful addition to the collection. The feedback for Kinton Cloud-House should give you a good feel for what it will be like. Book a stay and be the first to write a review!

This is hands down the best self-catering accommodation I have ever stayed at in the UK. The setting is absolutely surreal, the hut itself is perfect and Frankie the host is a gem. And the two pooches, Onesie and Widget are the cherry on top.

Brilliant getaway as always at the Duck Hut - a real retreat and a chance to switch off!

Truly very special place. Not only the story of how it came to be at Kinton, the character, despite it being effectively one room, its wonderfully thoughtout, the decoration with the Hare stained glass, the view (wow wow wow) and the wonderful hospitality of Frankie and Wigit the Dog!

A wonderful week away in a tranquil setting. Just what I needed! The hut was cosy and well equipped, the views were stunning, the local area was amazing to explore, and Frankie was the perfect host.

We had a wonderful stay at The Duck Hut and Frankie was a great host! The perfect secluded location for getting away from the city with the Shropshire Hills right on the doorstep. The hut itself was comfortable with all the amenities we could have wanted and the all important log burner for cosy nights in.
