Overview
Owners Georgie and Jim, who live across the courtyard where you park, have taken their old cow byre and infused it with all the creativity and colour that has gone into their lives as artists. Repurposed and reimagined items are everywhere, as well as an inexplicable ceiling canoe, just for fun. The open-plan lounge and kitchen occupy the whole ground floor, making a huge space for two or even four to spread out on the sofas in comfort. There’s a king-sized bed downstairs and two single upstairs on the mezzanine, accessed by a ladder that must have given the cows a few problems but will prove no issue for you as you clamber up into the cosy space at night.
Have your morning coffee on the stone terrace, watching the chickens peck for breakfast before choosing to retire to the hammock, head off into the Black Mountains or bumble into Hay-on-Wye to cruise the bookshops and have a good pub lunch. Whatever you get up to, the wood-fired Finnish sauna, shared with sister space The Boodge, makes a relaxing end to the day, although the cold plunge pool might wake you right back up.

Meet Georgie and Jim
Georgie and Jim have been here for over a decade. They are both painters whose work is inspired and rooted in the place where they live. Georgie has a pretty and abundant flower garden which provides her main focus and Jim has the landscape, which he frequently trudges off into absorbing a few of its many possibilities. The byre was their studio when they first arrived, but they soon created a purpose-built space in the garden and decided to open it as a let in 2013. Soon after, in the time of Covid Jim created the sauna. He has always loved a good steam and as a young lad living literally in a barn and drinking out of a sheep trough, he used a mobile sweat lodge to wash, which he delighted in taking to various pools for a dip after. The sauna is his sort of grown up version!
Wildlife and environment
This is an ancient site that used to be part of Wales but is now in England. It sits on a promontory and the land drops steeply to the front and sides. The booby dingle and Escley brook murmur in the valleys below. The land all around is farmed organically with small fields, hedgerows and woodland. You’ll see foxes, badgers and the local livestock of course, along with kites, buzzards , redstarts , wagtail, screech owls tawny owls and tiny to mention only a few.

Pip
A really nice place to stay, had such a relaxing time. The owners were really nice people and very accommodating with the cutest little dog called ‘Persie’ who came and checked in on us a couple of times. The sauna and cold plunge was exceptional an extremely nice addition to the stay and highly recommend. Would happily recommend and would love to check out one of their other places to stay one day

Arriving in the Wern Derys Byre felt like being welcomed into an artists home, full of colour, curiosities and character. The beautiful views across the Black Mountains tempted us into long walks whatever the weather. Our evenings were spent around the wood-burner playing games, or better still trying out the real Finnish Sauna a treat for aching legs!
