Overview
As you approach down the track through the field and pull into the little courtyard, you catch sight of The Boodge through the trees, maybe wondering what the twin curved roofs contain. As you step inside, you’re struck first by the openness of the space and then by the craft that has gone into its creation. The ceiling has been blackened by the Yakisugi technique, the walls are covered in art and while windows that face the hills or the private garden are large and low, those that face down to sister space Wern Derys and the owners’ house across the courtyard are high enough to create a sense of seclusion but flood the rooms with sunlight.
The warm, rich glow of the copper roll-top bath and the deep leather sofas reflecting the light of the wood burner might prove too inviting, but explore a little further into Wern Derys and you’ll find the wood-fired Finnish sauna and plunge pool, shared with the Byre. Of course, you might save the steam for when you really need it, after a day of hiking off into the Black Mountains, tiring yourself out with a rummage in the bookshops of Hay-on-Wye or sampling great food in the area’s broad selection of traditional country pubs.

Meet your hosts
Meet Georgie and Jim
Georgie and Jim have been here for over a decade. They are both painters whose work is inspired and rooted in the place where they live. Georgie has a pretty and abundant flower garden which provides her main focus and Jim has the landscape, which he frequently trudges off into absorbing a few of its many possibilities. The byre was their studio when they first arrived, but they soon created a purpose-built space in the garden and decided to open it as a let in 2013. Soon after, in the time of Covid Jim created the sauna. He has always loved a good steam and as a young lad living literally in a barn and drinking out of a sheep trough, he used a mobile sweat lodge to wash, which he delighted in taking to various pools for a dip after. The sauna is his sort of grown up version!
Wildlife and environment
This is an ancient site that used to be part of Wales but is now in England. It sits on a promontory and the land drops steeply to the front and sides. The booby dingle and Escley brook murmur in the valleys below. The land all around is farmed organically with small fields, hedgerows and woodland. You’ll see foxes, badgers and the local livestock of course, along with kites, buzzards , redstarts , wagtail, screech owls tawny owls and tiny to mention only a few.

A cosy night spent cooking a feast and hunkering down by the fire as the rain howled outside. In the morning the cabin was filled with the most morning beautiful sunlight, we enjoyed views of Hay Bluff over a cup of tea in the morning. A day walking right from the door, sampling the antiques and bookshops of Hay and an evening at the amazing fire feast restaurant Under the Nut Tree, all topped off with a wind-down in the sauna. The perfect winter escape.
