Overview
Old Fred is your passport to relaxation, with adventure in the Brecon Beacons or the Wye Valley followed by hot tub soaks and after dinner drinks by the firepit. You can be as active as you want, from strolls in the woods at the foot of the hill or watching the kites feed if the hay’s being cut, to massive hikes through the Beacons or the Black Mountains and kayak trips down the river where you can moor up at pub jetties and stop for lunch. There are walkable pubs too, but the amazing views from the cabin mean it’s pretty much downhill everywhere, so make sure you leave enough time and energy for the climb back up.
The cabin itself has been carefully crafted into a peaceful space where once there were only chicken sheds. The interior is open-plan, with hobs, a microwave and toaster in the kitchen and big comfy sofa in the lounge area. There’s a king-size bed and en suite bathroom with a waterfall showerhead, so you can wash off there before you get the tub going. About thirty metres up the slope behind you you’ll see sister cabins, Pax and Russet. While the three cabins share no facilities, you will probably meet the other guests as you wander through the trees of the newly planted orchard and the wild grass of the meadow.

Meet your hosts
Meet Tim, Liz, Ben and James
The Rogers family have come together from very different backgrounds to combine their love of the beautiful Welsh Marches with their desire to run a business together. Tim ran a legal department in Westminster for more years than he wants to remember, Liz was a fashion designer for several household names. Both were originally from country backgrounds, Liz growing up on a spectacular hill farm overlooking the Lake District. They retired in 2007 to Herefordshire. Ben and James went to Central Saint Martins to study art with Ben following a career in music and James in the charity sector. Both missed being in the countryside and particularly walking the Herefordshire hills and the mountains of the Welsh borders. The pandemic was the driver for them to come together again and pool their resources.
The Arbour, developed over five years by the previous owners Chis and Sarah, was the perfect opportunity to live and work together as a family. Ben and James will be running the business with support from Tim and Liz. They are looking forward to sharing their intimate knowledge of the area and especially the many and varied opportunities for walking, kayaking, fishing, foraging and exploring the fabulous pubs and restaurants.
Wildlife & the environment
The land is south facing and gently sloping, surrounded by woodland and open farmland. There are rabbits in the fields which attract birds of prey and foxes. Owls, squirrels, bats and many varieties of birds abound. In the woods bordering the site, there are Firecrests and deer which sometimes venture into the surrounding fields. There is a resident Sparrowhawk who hunts on the grounds. The long grass harbours slow worms, frogs and toads and all varieties of mice and voles which again attract birds of prey especially Red Kites and Buzzards.
As we develop the business, we are ambitious to expand the ecological potential of the site and hope to install EV panels and EV charging and do further work to encourage the wildlife. We look forward to welcoming you to our beautiful area and the fantastic accommodation and to providing you with an opportunity to really relax in stunning and calm surroundings.

Pictures really didn't do the place justice. It's got a lovely rustic feel to it, nicely laid out & well equipped. We had some very wet, muddy walks (the pub even had a Lounge & a Canoeist bar, so wet!) but to come back, light the log burner then slip into the steaming Hot Tub was bliss! When the sun's out, the veranda is a great place to sit & enjoy the views, even watch bunnies in the field! Place is a proper escape!

We had a superb stay at Old Fred. The location and views from the cabin were stunning. The cabin itself was beautifully furnished, cosy and the bed was comfortable. The fire pit was amazing and we cooked dinner on there a few times. The hot tub was great. Chris and Sarah were welcoming hosts and so helpful and kind. We had lovely meals in the local area and our trip to the Breacon Becons was amazing.

Third time with C&S but this one was by far the best. The construction of the cabin is a work of art. Attention to detail is amazing. No cheap fittings, no expense seems to have been spared. Wonderful setting with panoramic views of the Black Mountains. Will definitely return.

We loved our stay at Old Fred - it was just perfect. We've treated ourselves to a December cabin stay for a few years now enjoy a fire and a hot tub around Christmas time; Old Fred has been our favourite cabin by far. The cabin is beautifully done, and really spacious with a fantastic shower and a wonderful hot tub with a view - we also made use to the games and puzzles to keep us entertained on a cold day. The view from the large picture windows was incredible, and we were kept well stocked with seasoned wood for the log burner. At other cabin stays we've had to pay for extra fire wood, or been given logs that are unseasoned so difficult to get a good fire going. Not to case at Old Fred! Just send a text, and more will be delivered sharpish by Chris, free of charge. The cabins at Briley are really reasonably priced, especially considering how amazing they are. We cannot fault the place at all. There are three cabins on site, so I did wonder if it would feel less secluded than we'd hoped for - not the case at all. They're all very private, and we didn't see or hear another guest at all during our stay. Loved it so much, we will definitely be back!
15/12/2023Victoria
A beautiful cabin in picturesque scenery. This was idea for a romantic, relaxing getaway. The cabin had everything we could need and was beautifully warm even on cold nights.
23/10/2023Samantha
We had the best stay at old Fred! It was exactly what we were looking for, it was so peaceful and relaxing. The cabin was impeccably clean, very well equipped and the hosts Chris and Sarah were so kind and attentive.
13/10/2023Abby
We had such a lovely weekend at the old Fred, the cabin was beautiful and the location was great too. We stay at cabins/Shepard huts about 3 times a year, and this was one of our favourite accommodations and escapes, would definitely recommend
29/09/2023Eleri
Beautiful location with lovely hosts. It's a little pocket of paradise, stunning views. Short distance to some decent walking and hiking and country pubs. Highly recommended
22/09/2023Stephanie
Wow what a place! From start to finish it was just perfect. Owners were extremely helpful at checkin and very welcoming. We were travelling with our 6 month baby and the place was great for us all to explore the surroundings. The hot tub was just what was needed on the night after a long walk as suggested by Chris. We even cooked a steak on the fire pit which was all set up ready for us. We normally never return to the same lodge but on this occasion we said we would go back again in a heart beat.
20/09/2023Patricia
It had everything we were looking for: high quality cabin, rustic but well kitted out, great views, great hot tub, felt private and secluded.
15/09/2023Matt
Wonderful stay. The cabin was remote and peaceful, with a lovely view. Great location for exploring the Wye Valley area too. Cabin had everything we needed and was cosy and comfortable.
28/08/2023Peter
Had a lovely stay at Old Fred. Cabin was clean and well equipped in a perfect quiet location 10 minutes from Hay. Chris and Sarah were easy to contact and welcoming but never interfered and let us enjoy the peace; perfect hosts.
21/07/2023Jonathan
We loved every moment at Old Fred. We were greeted warmly and shown how to use the hot tub. The views were lovely and we enjoyed watching the kites soar over the surrounding fields. Everything you need is provided. The undercover seating outside is great to shelter from the sun or the rain. Despite their being two other cabins in the field we never heard anything from them. There is also a great selection of games, which we enjoyed playing in the evenings.
07/07/2023Marie
Beautiful place! Did not want to leave! The cabin was perfect, had absolutely everything you needed and was spotless. Incredible shower and the design was so cool! The hot tub and view over the hills was the perfect spot for us to chill for our mini moon. So relaxing, wish we had stayed longer :)
16/06/2023Bronte
It was amazing! The cabin had everything we need and a warm welcome by the owners! We can’t wait to come back!
28/04/2023Fran
We had the best stay at Old Fred. Feeling very well rested and grateful for a lovely weekend
07/04/2023Hayley
From the moment we arrived to when we left, Sarah and Chris were so welcoming & made us feel at home. Everything we needed was ready for us to use as soon as we arrived & it was perfect! The views were incredible, the big windows in the living area and bedroom were lovely to have open of a morning to look out upon. Sitting in the hot tip of an evening, watching the sunset & star gazing was just what we needed on this little break. Couldn’t recommend it enough, we even contemplated staying a few extra nights if it were available!
03/04/2023Katy
Such a gorgeous and relaxing weekend! The cabin was perfect, the hot tub was divine (even in the rain and blustery wind!), and the location was just gorgeous!
13/01/2023Michelle
Tranquil, relaxing and isolated. Perfect hot tub view.
13/07/2022Stacey
We absolutely loved our stay at the old fred, it was a beautiful lodge, in a beautiful location and the owners had thought of Everything and they were the perfect hosts, friendly but gave us our space as well.
24/06/2022Laura
We have recently got back from our stay at Old Fred. It was idyllic, tranquil and well just perfect! It was the perfect place to disconnect and relax. The cabin was clean and spotless and the attention to detail was stunning. We couldn’t have asked for anymore and would 100% recommend to anyone. Thanks so much for a fantastic stay!
20/04/2022Courteney
We went for my 20th birthday just a relaxing time away. We went into Hereford and went to an amazing sweet shop and then chilled for the rest of our stay
18/10/2021Seren
Perfect, idyllic, beautiful paradise. Chris and Sarah have thought of everything. The cabin is wonderful, the hot tub is smashing and the views are breathtaking. You feel like the only people in the world, we can’t wait to come back.
13/10/2021Gemma
We had the most amazing time! It rained almost constantly but that didn't ruin the experience at all. There was so much to do around the area but it was also so calm and peaceful and felt like a real moment away from life's stresses. The hosts were wonderful as well.
01/10/2021Ruby
Had an incredible time in a secluded cabin in the middle of nowhere. Hot tub was excellent and away from prying eyes, the cabin itself was incredibly clean and spacious and the hosts did everything required to let us enjoy our stay.
22/09/2021Gareth
Fantastic stay at Old Fred - we did not have the pleasure of meeting Sarah but Chris was very welcoming, friendly and gave us recommendations for the local area. The cabin was immaculate, with everything you could need. A true haven and a perfect escape for us after what has been a very difficult year. We hope to return, we miss the views and the hot tub already! Thank you very much Chris and Sarah!
15/09/2021Jessica
A peaceful stay in a wonderful place. The cabin was cosy and comfortable with fantastic views across to the Black Mountains. We loved cooking on the open fire, eating on the deck, star gazing in the hot tub, and relaxing in this beautiful setting. Swooping swallows were an added bonus, watching their acrobatics in the mornings and evenings. It was all perfect!
06/09/2021Stephanie
At the beginning of the year we were looking ahead and pining for something to look forward to. We booked Old Fred for a long weekend away and we are so thrilled that we did. The cabin is absolutely gorgeous, incredibly thought out and functional. There was nothing we could fault about this little haven. It is cosy, comforting, and idyllic. The views of the Black Mountains were incredible - we loved waking up and gazing out to the horizon. We would love to visit again - there is so much to do in the surrounding area - we barely scratched the surface.
20/08/2021Katharine
Absolutely amazing stay at Old Fred! Chris and Sarah are lovely hosts, and the Cabin is so cosy and in a nice quiet location! The hot tub is also a great bonus and has amazing views of the Black Mountains in the distance. Can’t recommend enough!
16/08/2021Rebecca
First trip away after lockdown. Wanted a romantic secluded Lodge. It was perfect. The lodge was very well done and finished to a high standard. Chris and Sarah were great hosts and very attentive. 10/10
25/06/2021Matthew
It was wonderful. Accommodation was lovely and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Hosts were very nice.
07/06/2021Dan
Fabulous weekend in a wonderful location. Old Fred exceeded my expectation, it had everything you could possibly need, the hot tub was fantastic for a sunny afternoon drink outside but also lovely for some drizzly evening star gazing! We cooked one evening on the fire pit and enjoyed the wonderful views. The cabin has a lovely cosy feel and the wood burner kept us warm in the chilly evenings. There is plenty to do near by, with Hay on Wye only a short drive and many walks, we hope to return one day to see some more of the area, you definitely need the three nights!
21/05/2021Anna
What an absolute gem! We were so overwhelmed with how perfect the cabin is, Chris and Sarah really have thought about every little detail! From the beautiful views of the black mountains to the yummy apple muffins on arrival, we could fault nothing. We will definitely be back again next year!
19/05/2021Nikki
What a magical place. Considering Sarah and Chris only built these lodges in lockdown, they have not only created three incredible places to stay, they have truly created something extremely high quality and are naturals at running the business.
15/05/2021Steve
We absolutely loved our stay at Old Fred! The cabin looks even better than the photos, beautiful wood everywhere and stunning exposed pipes - it's clearly been designed with everything in mind! The windows are amazing, you can sit by the log fire with a cuppa or wake up in bed and enjoy the views. The hot tub is so good, we really enjoyed using it both nights under the stars! We didn't get a chance to meet Sarah, but Chris was super lovely and very helpful with anything we needed. Keep an eye out for their little cat Jeff, he sat with us both nights and in the mornings! A beautiful place to just relax and listen to the birds with a fire burning. Best place we've stayed at in the UK!! Will definitely be back again in the future and wish Chris and Sarah all the best!
12/05/2021Olivia-paige
The place is absolutely magical: a nicely designed house full of little cute details, well equipped, very clean and cosy. The location is perfect - far enough from any big road to enjoy bids singing and silence and stars at night, but close to many public walks, mountains, pubs and many beautiful spots to make your weekend special. Chris and Sarah are amazing hosts - thanks for being warm and welcoming! We'll definitely come back!
30/04/2021Slava
Our stay was no less than perfect, apart from having to leave! Chris and Sarah were the most accommodating hosts that helped with recommendations of local pubs and advised on where to walk and explore during our stay. We were treated to delicious home-baked muffins and tasty cider as a welcome gift and the views from the cabin are just superb! The hot tub is perfectly placed and very relaxing after a long hike. You have everything you need at Old Fred, and the lovely little touches within the cabin made our stay so comfortable. We walked to two local pubs from the cabin, both on lovely walking trails through woodland and fields. A great location and exceeded our expectations!
28/04/2021Elise
Amazing stay! We totally relaxed because of the thoughtful & spacious design of “Old Fred” and the relaxed welcome & careful provision from our hosts, Chris and Sarah. There are beautiful views from the cabin and a variety of stunning walks and activities close by. We walked along Hergest Ridge, climbed Pen Y Fan, ate outside at local pubs, canoed on the River Wye and visited the book town of Hay on Wye. Everything was just brilliant!
19/04/2021Deborah
We had an absolutely brilliant time staying at The Arbour in April 2021. We were in Old Fred and it was superb, really nicely done up with everything you could need for a week away. The views from the hot tub and from the fire pit outside the cabin are spectacular (as is the location in general), so peaceful and quiet but 5 minutes away from Hay-on-Wye and a number of pubs. Also really close to lots of great walking in the countryside. Chris and Sarah are really friendly and helpful and helped make our stay perfect - thank you both very much, and can't wait to stay again soon!
16/04/2021Mike
We're super excited to be adding Sarah and Chris' latest space. A wonderful addition to the collection. The feedback for Russet and Pax should give you a good feel for what it will be like. Book a stay and be the first to write a review!

Our stay at the Old Fred was incredible! We were amazed by the interior and exterior of the cabin, we loved the views and all the small details included such as the hanging pots and pans, the bathroom design and the indoor fireplace! The hot tub was the cherry on the top of our stay, which we used lots and enjoyed after our long hike to Hay Bluff peak! We highly recommend this cabin

A beautiful cabin in picturesque scenery. This was idea for a romantic, relaxing getaway. The cabin had everything we could need and was beautifully warm even on cold nights.

We had the best stay at old Fred! It was exactly what we were looking for, it was so peaceful and relaxing. The cabin was impeccably clean, very well equipped and the hosts Chris and Sarah were so kind and attentive.

We had such a lovely weekend at the old Fred, the cabin was beautiful and the location was great too. We stay at cabins/Shepard huts about 3 times a year, and this was one of our favourite accommodations and escapes, would definitely recommend

Beautiful location with lovely hosts. It's a little pocket of paradise, stunning views. Short distance to some decent walking and hiking and country pubs. Highly recommended

It had everything we were looking for: high quality cabin, rustic but well kitted out, great views, great hot tub, felt private and secluded.

Wonderful stay. The cabin was remote and peaceful, with a lovely view. Great location for exploring the Wye Valley area too. Cabin had everything we needed and was cosy and comfortable.

Had a lovely stay at Old Fred. Cabin was clean and well equipped in a perfect quiet location 10 minutes from Hay. Chris and Sarah were easy to contact and welcoming but never interfered and let us enjoy the peace; perfect hosts.

It was amazing! The cabin had everything we need and a warm welcome by the owners! We can’t wait to come back!

We had the best stay at Old Fred. Feeling very well rested and grateful for a lovely weekend

Such a gorgeous and relaxing weekend! The cabin was perfect, the hot tub was divine (even in the rain and blustery wind!), and the location was just gorgeous!

Tranquil, relaxing and isolated. Perfect hot tub view.

We absolutely loved our stay at the old fred, it was a beautiful lodge, in a beautiful location and the owners had thought of Everything and they were the perfect hosts, friendly but gave us our space as well.

We went for my 20th birthday just a relaxing time away. We went into Hereford and went to an amazing sweet shop and then chilled for the rest of our stay

Perfect, idyllic, beautiful paradise. Chris and Sarah have thought of everything. The cabin is wonderful, the hot tub is smashing and the views are breathtaking. You feel like the only people in the world, we can’t wait to come back.

We had the most amazing time! It rained almost constantly but that didn't ruin the experience at all. There was so much to do around the area but it was also so calm and peaceful and felt like a real moment away from life's stresses. The hosts were wonderful as well.

Had an incredible time in a secluded cabin in the middle of nowhere. Hot tub was excellent and away from prying eyes, the cabin itself was incredibly clean and spacious and the hosts did everything required to let us enjoy our stay.

Absolutely amazing stay at Old Fred! Chris and Sarah are lovely hosts, and the Cabin is so cosy and in a nice quiet location! The hot tub is also a great bonus and has amazing views of the Black Mountains in the distance. Can’t recommend enough!

First trip away after lockdown. Wanted a romantic secluded Lodge. It was perfect. The lodge was very well done and finished to a high standard. Chris and Sarah were great hosts and very attentive. 10/10

It was wonderful. Accommodation was lovely and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Hosts were very nice.
