Overview
Leave your cares at the car park and don your wellies – it’s a 10-minute walk along a scarcely used public footpath (but you can borrow a wheelbarrow, or even get a lift) to this utterly private spot in your very own field with views soaring over the prettiest corner of Dorset. Why not start your holiday in style and have delicious breakfast ingredients waiting for you. You can purchase local sausages and bacon, mushrooms, eggs, bread and butter, and homemade jams from the owners – a feast, which you can cook on the gas hob or outdoors on the firepit over a grill like true pioneers. There are plenty of local footpaths from the farm and you’ll find details of routes in the space. The North Dorset Trailway is a 25-minute stroll for walking and cycling from Sturminster Newton to Blandford. Pack up a picnic and head for the river which also has spots for wild swimming and kayaking. Fishing can also be arranged but bring your own kit.
If you run out of supplies head for a superb deli called Olives et al, less than two miles away by footpath and road, for homemade bread, seriously good cheeses, salads, tarts and sandwiches. For traditional Dorset ales the Bull Tavern is just down the road, or for fine dining try Plumber Manor. Should you be stuck indoors, because of bad weather, then get the wood-burner going, play board games, read a selection of books, listen to the radio or pop a DVD on and settle in for a cosy time. Later you can lie back in the copper bathtub with a glass of wine in hand while you stare at the hornbeam canopy above you and wonder why you don’t live like this all the time. There’s plenty for children (over 7) to do and they can range quite freely, but it would also be a treat to leave them behind and re-discover each other in this little paradise.

Great! Just what we needed
07/02/2025David
Great stay in what felt like a very secluded private cabin in the wild and off grid.
10/01/2025James
Such a peaceful and special place. We absolutely loved our time here. All the outdoor facilities make it the perfect city break. I couldn't recommend it more!
25/10/2024Lucy
We had a great stay at The Heron. Everything was exactly as per the pictures and description online. It was clean, we had everything we needed and more including some lovely locally sourced snacks. On our first morning we drew back the curtains to see three deer walking past just feet away from our cabin, it was lovely watching them from the comfort of our cosy bed with a coffee! As we stayed in mid-October I was a little unsure whether we’d be cold but the cabin was very snug, in fact we only used the wood burner on one of the nights and opened the window as we were too warm! Hannah was very welcoming and friendly. We stayed with our dog who also had a wonderful time. Lots of lovely places to visit nearby, we particularly enjoyed local walks and Sherborne.
18/10/2024Sarah
We had a lovely relaxing break at The Heron, exactly what we needed! The cabin was perfect, everything you could possibly need, and the outside space was beautiful and very peaceful. We were fortunate enough to be there the same weekend as the Sturminster Cheese Festival which made a fab day out, with lots of delicious treats!
13/09/2024Rachael
Wow what a stunning place, the experience starts by following a path down to a stream and across a bridge to your own private field entrance. The Heron is set in a beautiful pond side location, teaming with wildlife we saw all sorts of birds, the crows were particularly funny, hares and the farm cat came to visit. The Heron is really well laid out and equipped, it’s small and cleverly formed, and the outside space is lovely for evening cooking and enjoying the setting sun or if your an early bird the rising sun, there are lots of cushions and blankets to make the outside really comfortable. The general location is good if you are out and about in Dorset nothing we wanted to see what more than about 40 mins away so the Heron was ideal.
17/06/2024Joe
The Heron was such a special spot to have a few nights away and we were blessed with the weather. Having a small toddler we thought would be tricky but the hut is well equipped and as a parent adaption is key! It was lovely to wrap up, sit outside with a fire and have a glass of wine while the little one slept. Lighting the fire each morning to warm ourselves up was a memory from childhood which I hope we have passed onto my son. We ordered two hampers which kept us going the whole trip as they’re generous in size. Thank you Hannah for bringing our heavy bags down while we navigated the path and stopped to look at everything my son pointed at!
19/04/2024Hannah
We had a fabulous family holiday. The outdoor bath, lack of WiFi and tech was much needed. Loved the privacy that the heron gave us
05/04/2024Lynsey
Fantastic place to stay, nice and secluded but not too far out of the way to go for a decent walk to stop by in the local town. Very accommodating hosts and tidy and clean place, will definitely be visiting again.
01/04/2024Hayden
Perfect, secluded and cosy weekend stay, located away from any noise. The Heron was exactly how it was advertised and Hannah was hand should we have needed anything but everything we needed was already provided. We enjoyed cooking in, relaxing in front of the fire and soaking in the outdoor bath at night.
16/03/2024Jamie
My partner and I spent 2 nights at the Heron cabin and it was the most perfect weekend. We arrived when it was dark and a wet, so our host, Hannah, kindly drove us, our luggage and the dog to the cabin. The cabin itself us wonderfully private and secluded, surrounded by luscious green fields, yet it offers a short walk to the amenities of town which is equally as charming. There are plenty of cute cafe's and grocery stores for supplies here. We took advantage of the glorious outdoor bath and cooked a leg of lamb in the Dutch oven over the fire pit - simply delicious! We would both recommend this location to anyone looking for a private, peaceful getaway. Thank you Hannah!
09/02/2024Clara
Stay was awesome! Hannah was great, we arrived late and she still accommodated. Cabin was so cozy, the pizza oven was great to use. We really enjoyed watching movies with the projector. We used the outside tub as a cold plunge, which was great!
16/12/2023Erin
We had a wonderful relaxing stay at the Heron. The tiny house had everything you could need for a remote weekend away.
17/11/2023Eleanor
Just back from the most wonderful weekend away at The Heron. The setting was perfectly peaceful and just what two, sleep deprived parents needed for the weekend. The plan was to do nothing and not leave and the cabin let us do just this in such comfort. We cooked on the fire outside, had midday outdoor baths, sat and watched the birds at the pond, played board games in front of the fire and snuggled up with films in bed! Couldn't recommend this place more and will be back.
10/11/2023Casie
What a fabulous place! Hannah was so kind in driving me round to the Heron as the weather was absolutely dreadful when I arrived but once inside I was cosy and snug. Thankfully on the second day I was able to utilise all the wonderful outdoor fixtures which really make this cabin special. Cooking on the fire pit and taking a luxurious bath in the outdoor tub were the highlights. I also very much enjoyed the hampers. I treated myself to the small breakfast hamper, which had everything you need for two cooked breakfasts for one person and the luxury snack box, which didn't look like much in the box but was crammed full of delicious treats that kept me happy for days! I'll definitely be back for this little slice of peace.
20/09/2023SUSANNAH
Amazing, haven't experienced such a peaceful/ private place before.
05/07/2023Fenn
We had a fantastic stay at the heron. Hannah was lovely, she met us when we arrived and helped us with our luggage. The Heron itself beautiful and it was very private which is exactly what we wanted. It was a perfect little staycation
21/06/2023Katherine
Such a wonderfully relaxing stay at The Heron, where you feel completely on your own and able to soak up the surrounding nature in all it's glory. A highlight was having my morning coffee, sitting in the outdoor swinging char and listening to the birds go about their day. Hannah has created such a luxurious haven with the comfiest bed and cosiest linen, whilst also being off-grid and really away from anyone else. Such a treat!
02/03/2023Ellie, Canopy & Stars
As a family of 4, we all had a wonderful time. From the walk from the car to The Heron nestled by an ox bow lake. And adjacent to the lovely river Stour. A truly magical setting. The Heron is beautiful designed with everything you need. With lovely walks straight from the door. And the town is a short walk away for treats.
26/10/2022Brian
We had the most amazing time at The Heron. It was a lovely break for our little family. The kids have been desperate to go camping/glamping and we decided this would be the best first experience. It absolutely was! The set up was beautiful and we enjoyed sitting out every night watching the stars, having pizza (on the pizza oven) and late night bubble baths. Hannah the owner was very lovely and helpful too. We will definately be returning in the future!
19/08/2022Emily
We had such a wonderful stay here. The location was just perfect, close to a little village but we really felt like we were by ourselves in our little cabin. The place was beautiful and everything we could have hoped for. Hannah was so welcoming and talked us through everything we needed to know. We can’t wait to come back another time.
29/07/2022Lenny
Our stay at The Heron was the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of life! Gorgeous location in the middle of a field, we saw lots of wildlife and the tiny barn was a wonderful experience that left us wanting more of the ‘off-grid, simple’ lifestyle. A great place to disconnect from technology and reconnect with nature.
13/06/2022Olivia
We had an amazing few days at The Heron, it’s so beautiful and they provided everything we could possibly need. A very special place!
08/06/2022Katherine
It was beautifully relaxing, lovely to feel so off grid but with amenities close by. Kids loved their loft bedroom & honestly I was a bit jealous too. It had everything we needed & more.
18/04/2022Debra
The perfect stay. Would highly recommend and would love to stay again!
21/03/2022Jack
We had the most amazing time at the Heron! Didn’t want to leave! The setting was perfect and had everything we needed and more. The bath outside and the inside projector were incredible!

Oh my goodness, this place is wonderful - your own little tiny home in the middle of nowhere! We had such a lovely week here - we all loved the outdoor copper bath, the fire pit (bbq every night!) our daughter was thrilled to have her own 'roof nest' up the ladder and the bed was super comfy. You are surrounded by nature, there's a wonderful wild swim just a field away, the owners could not be more accommodating or helpful - it really is just bliss. And that's not to mention the scrumptious marshmallows that were there to meet us....!
30/08/2021Laura
If you're looking for a real off-grid experience, with a little bit of luxury, this is the place for you. The adventure started when I left my car behind and walked along a much forgotten muddy footpath to find the accommodation. As I turned the corner into the field the little cabin appeared and I knew I had truly found a place to escape. The little cabin had everything I needed for a getaway and I absolutely loved the outdoor bathtub, reading a book snuggled up in the egg chair on the decking and waking up in such a comfortable bed with views of the countryside!

Stay was awesome! Hannah was great, we arrived late and she still accommodated. Cabin was so cozy, the pizza oven was great to use. We really enjoyed watching movies with the projector. We used the outside tub as a cold plunge, which was great!

We had a wonderful relaxing stay at the Heron. The tiny house had everything you could need for a remote weekend away.

We had a fantastic stay at the heron. Hannah was lovely, she met us when we arrived and helped us with our luggage. The Heron itself beautiful and it was very private which is exactly what we wanted. It was a perfect little staycation

We had such a wonderful stay here. The location was just perfect, close to a little village but we really felt like we were by ourselves in our little cabin. The place was beautiful and everything we could have hoped for. Hannah was so welcoming and talked us through everything we needed to know. We can’t wait to come back another time.

It was beautifully relaxing, lovely to feel so off grid but with amenities close by. Kids loved their loft bedroom & honestly I was a bit jealous too. It had everything we needed & more.

We had a fantastic stay at the Heron! The host was so helpful and sent through lots of great information ahead of our stay. The cabin was beautiful in such a lovely setting, so peaceful and the whole site was well maintained. Great location of surrounding day trips and walks.
