Overview
With effortless grace, Great Burrow Stable blends the deep, rich colours of a chic hotel with the peace of the Devon countryside. Inside, you’ll find plush red armchairs, ornate screens and hints of brass picked out by vintage lighting, while outside under the covered porch, nature is left to work her own magic. The dining table and chairs are where you’ll sit in the morning with a coffee, or finish the day with a glass of something while you debate who gets the swing or the bath first. Both are beautiful on a starry night, but equally atmospheric when the rain is drumming on the roof above.
While the cabin has all the modern flourishes – fridge, TV, wifi – owners Mary and Justin, who left London in search of a different way of life, have created a space perfect for unhooking from the modern world and truly relaxing. You can hike straight from the door on woodland trails, hit the coast in half an hour, nip over to Dartmoor, or stroll through the woods to the local pub for dinner. If you prefer to cook, then pick up ingredients from Okehampton’s organic grocer, to add to the local milk and the eggs from the hens you’ll see wandering past the cabin. You’ll possibly spot Theo, a neighbour’s horse who lives in the field next door, while all around you the health of lightly tended land means deer, rabbits, owls and woodpeckers are all common sights. All you have to do is decide if you’ll be spotting from the deck recliner, the swing, the bath or the hot tub.

Meet Justin
In 2008, with two small children, Justin came to realise that living in London was not quite as fun as it had been when he was young and carefree. Justin and his family chose to move to a place that was outside of the orbit of the city and ended up in one of the quietest, least populated parts of the country. With breath-taking countryside and within a short ride to the beach, they chose a lovely old farmhouse with a converted Linhay, Great Burrow Cottage.
They decided it would be fun to have another project and chose to convert their stables into another offering that would be a space where they could indulge their taste for interiors with reclaimed and upcycled materials with a low carbon footprint. Justin and his family are thrilled with the way Great Burrow Stables evolved into a really special place. They are also delighted to welcome guests to their site to enjoy both the Cottage and Stables together as a group.
Wildlife and Environment
The neighbour’s horse, Theo, resides in the field next door and is a sweet and good-natured neighbour. At your feet you may notice the odd chicken passing as the hosts have free ranging chickens – as well as a couple of friendly cats and nearby you may spot the deer, rabbits, cuckoos, owls and the local woodpecker.

A beautiful little cabin set in an idyllic location. It’s even better than the photos! Very fortunate that we had a fair bit of snow which made the log fire and the hot tub even more enjoyable. Great location, easy to find using what3words and great hosts. Would recommend to anyone who is looking for a peaceful getaway to explore Devon, or to simple relax in front of the fire with a glass of wine and a good book.

My husband and I stayed three nights for our wedding anniversary. The cabin was lovely, and we're planning a return visit in the summer to make the most of the decking and outdoor seating. The cabin was quiet, cosy and comfortable with everything we needed for a long weekend. The outdoor bath was the perfect way to start the day. There are goldcrests, blue tits and robins darting around the trees - perfect for watching while you bathe! The wood fired hot tub was also lovely, and the instructions provided were easy to follow. The cabin is in a great location, with access to lots of amenities, and Dartmoor National Park via a short drive. We're looking forward to a return visit!

The cabin is absolutely wonderful. It’s decorated beautifully, very comfortable and even cosy while we were staying in the middle of storm Darragh. We managed to sit outside on the deck in the evening which was sheltered from the raging wind and with a fire pit that kept us warm. We didn’t get to try the hot tub because decided it would be a bit much in the storm but did manage to use the outside bath. It’s very well equipped with more than everything you need in the kitchen and logs for the fire. Would recommend to anyone driving or taking public transport (you can take a taxi easily from Okehampton). Would recommend using what three words over postcode but the host sent out directions before we went.

We absolutely loved our stay at a Great Burrow Stables! It was beautiful and cosy, equipt with everything you need. The snow made the holiday even more magical but meant we had to change our plans - a car journey into Dartmoor. Instead, We enjoyed a slow walk with our dog to the Clovelly Inn pub which served some tasty home cooked food! (Super portion sizes too) To top it all off, we enjoyed some hot chocolates and a few films by the fire. The perfect break!

Lovely and unique accommodation deep in rural Devon. Not an easy place to find, but well worth it as the rewards are delightful once you are there. Surrounded by trees and greenery, the space is modern, eco-friendly and well thought out and very well equipped. The outside bath on the decking was a daily delight, although we were not quite brave enough to experiment with the hot tub. Justin took time to settle us in. All in all a great experience.

Me and my girlfriend had a short 2 night stay at Great Burrow Stables, we were unlucky with the weather and weren’t brave enough to try the hot tub in the rain, but had a great time nonetheless. Very cosy, peaceful beautiful surroundings, and the accommodation itself was very warm and comfortable, especially the bed

We had a fantastic stay at Great Burrow Stable. Such a peaceful spot nestled in the tree and easy access to beautiful Dartmoor. The Stable is full of character - Mary and Justin have thought of lots of lovely little details, like the ropes for the bath and chess to play in front of the fire. We left feeling rested and restored and look forward to coming back again!
14/11/2023Josie
We had a fantastic time at great burrow stables, we very much enjoyed the style and attention to detail that it offered, such as eggs from their chickens and fresh milk. All of the decor was of high quality and felt like love and care had been put I to the design and upkeep of the place.

Such a fantastic holiday, the most beautiful accommodation with attentive hosts. The location was perfect for us and afforded us to feel like we were all alone. We love Devon & we wanted somewhere dog friendly! The tub outside and the cabin from the pictures looked perfect for a romantic baby moon.

Very comfortable, felt like your own instantly, very close to some great walks and having a Waitrose nearby really helped.

I so enjoyed my stay at Great Burrow Stables! It was exactly what I'd hoped for - a chance to reconnect with nature, make time for myself and explore Dartmoor. The cabin was beautiful - I felt calm, safe and surrounded by trees and birds. Fantastic.

We had a fantastic time at great burrow stables, we very much enjoyed the style and attention to detail that it offered, such as eggs from their chickens and fresh milk. All of the decor was of high quality and felt like love and care had been put I to the design and upkeep of the place.

We had a really lovely time staying in the stables. It was exactly what we needed, the cabin was really cosy and the bed was so comfortable. It was lovely watching the horse in the paddock opposite and listening to the birds and sheep. Mary and Justin were really accommodating when we had to change our plans slightly and they made sure we had everything we needed when we got there. Thank you so much for a lovely few days!

Great Burrows Stables is an amazing secluded space. We loved the construction of the exterior and the vintage finds of the interior. Justin was an excellent host.

It was absolutely amazing. The most beautiful home from home, idyllic surroundings and perfect location for days out. Our 11month puppy & 6 year old daughter lived saying hello to the horse every morning, and sitting by the fire every night after a day of adventures. Would recommend unreservedly.

Big thanks to Mary and Justin for such a wonderful stay. Had a wonderful time watching the horse in the next field from the covered deck, and relaxing in the outdoor bath. Can't wait for next time!

Such a fantastic holiday, the most beautiful accommodation with attentive hosts. The location was perfect for us and afforded us to feel like we were all alone. Sitting in the hot tub looking at the stars was a magical experience. The comforts of home meant we could spend more time at the Stables cooking our own meals and making the most of the beautiful setting.
