Overview
Some places boast of south facing gardens, or the restful benefit of a north facing bedroom – but it doesn’t matter which way the compass points at The Hog House, because each direction looks out onto the majesty of the Lake District fells. As a base to explore the area, you simply couldn’t get much better. The space, an ex-shepherd’s bothy, is now a far cry from its previously spartan interior. Downstairs, where once sheep hid from encroaching storms, is now re-floored, re-plastered (though you might feel a draft in the right spot), and equipped with water and electricity. Though upstairs holds a bespoke dining table to eat away an evening as the weather beats the windowpanes, sunshine will have you outside at the table eating to jaw-dropping views.
From the pictures, you could be convinced civilisation is more than a day’s drive, but in reality, you can walk a couple of miles to the nearest pub – The Drunken Duck Inn – where you may even bump into the owner working a shift! Otherwise, there’s a surprising number of places to eat nearby. As for what to do? It’s a veritable wild paradise of caves, rivers, fells, lakes and tarns – more than you’ll manage in just the one trip – guess you’ll have to book another next year.

Converting The Hog House into somewhere special to stay has always been a dream of Ellie’s, she used to spend many birthday parties camping in the barn and always wanted to share the incredible view and location with others. After a year of hard work, The Hog House has been successfully converted into what it is now and Ellie is incredibly proud of the space.

Incredible from beginning to end. The Hog House is a gorgeous little hide away in the middle of the Lake District. We were lucky with the weather and the views were just outstanding! Owners were attentive and made sure everything was okay during our stay. Highly recommend!

Unique, wonderful place to stay.
26/02/2025Clare
Stayed for two nights in November. Loved it. Such a fantastic location and everything you need for a bit of solace. Wasn't expecting the kitchen to be so well equipped. Would def recommend.
15/11/2024Justin
Absolutely perfect place. Quiet, remote, cosy, peaceful, calming.
14/10/2024Jenny
We loved it here, stunning location with everything you could need. We would have stayed longer if we could.
07/10/2024Amber
We had a wonderful 2 night stay in the Hog House. We loved wheelbarrowing our luggage from our car, it really added to the experience! It was lovely to meet the owners too. We loved being able to walk from the doorstep to Black Crag and into Hawkshead for a lovely lunch and a few beers without worrying about driving home. Tarn Hows is also walkable and a lovely place to visit. We enjoyed 2 cosy nights with the wood burner. The kitchen had everything we needed to make a lovely meal, and we loved the special surprise of the wine and treats. The views across the fells were spectacular! And even better, we could share the experience with our dog too
23/09/2024Helen
Stunning views. Superb place to stay, peaceful and perfect in every way.
20/09/2024Jo
The Hog house is in a magical setting, the views were amazing. We didn’t get in the car until we left to go home. Walks from the door in stunning landscape.
30/08/2024Gill
We had a wonderful stay at the Hog House. It's location couldn't be more dramatic, perched on the hillside looking across at all the high Southern Fells. Remote and silent, it was a great place to be rained in and enjoy the privacy of the cottage. Lots of thoughtful touches made it very comfortable and the kitchen was very well stocked with everything needed to cook up some mountain meals. The hosts were great and were easy to contact. The farm dogs are also very sweet. The walk from the car to the Hog House isn't far at all, and the track is good for the provided wheelbarrow. I'd heartily recommend this place to anyone wanting a remote getaway. Thanks very much for our stay!
26/08/2024David
Wonderful remoteness with amazing views. Comfortable and cosy in a rainy and windy July.
03/07/2024Nicola
We absolutely loved our stay at the hog house. They perfect off grid retreat from the hustle and bustle of normal life. Ellie had thought of everything - the perfect set up. We loved sitting having our dinner admiring the beautiful view and the lambs playing in the field. Really hope we’ll get the chance to be back again.
05/06/2024Laura
Amazing place to stay, off the beaten track, wonderful scenery and spring lambs outside the door. Even as the weather turned, the views were still impressive.
24/05/2024Gerard
We enjoyed a fantastic holiday in the hog house. It is a very special place and Ellie was an excellent host.
05/04/2024Klara
Truly excellent, everything you need in a cosy space high up on the fells
03/04/2024James
We stayed in The Hog House at High Arnside after being gifted a Canopy & Stars voucher following a secret elopement. Although small, The Hog House has everything you could possibly need from a base following adventure in the lakes or just a secluded little escape where you can relax in tranquility. What more could you possibly desire than returning back to a cosy little cottage following a day in the lakes, a warming stew in the slow cooker, roaring log burner and the most beautiful views with the sun setting? The hosts were wonderful and communication was brilliant even before our arrival. I would highly recommend this little delight and we will definitely be back!
01/04/2024Sharon
The Hog House is an absolutely beautiful place to stay. It is surrounded by incredible 360 views and leaves behind the busy towns. I was lucky to have beautiful weather during my stay and enjoyed sitting outside in the sun. The Hog House is situated only 5/10 minutes from towns but it truly feels like you are completely miles away. It is situated close to a number of walkways meaning you don't even need to use the car. The owners were lovely and they are very lucky to call this home. I will definitely be back
29/03/2024Abigail
The Hog House was absolutely perfect as a place to get away from it all. It’s a really well-designed space with everything you might need. It’s so cosy, and after being very unfortunate with the weather the week we were there it was the ideal space to easily get comfortable in the evening, especially with the well-stocked log burner.
11/03/2024Emma
We had a wonderful time staying at the Hogs house. Ellie and her father could not have been more accommodating. The house itself is a one off with unique character and has views to die for. The location is perfect for exploring the lakes and near to civilization should you want it. We had many walks, hikes and explorers of local towns during our stay. I have travelled a bit and have to say the experience of the Hogs house was truly special
04/03/2024David
We stopped off here after a trip round Scotland. It was the perfect end to a perfect holiday. Cosy, log burner, beef stew and board games. Left a bit of my heart here
11/11/2023Emma
An absolutely unique place in a stunning location - felt like such an authentic experience of the Lakes that I'm still carrying inside me 'back in normal life'. The Hog House has been renovated with love and care - adding some comfort, but also retaining a sense of unspoiled wildness. The views from every window are just breath-taking - and with the endlessly shifting autumn weather, you could just sit there with a mug of tea and be enthralled! There are walks from your doorstep - up Black Crag for panoramic views of the mountains, lakes and sea - and you're close to great places while simultaneously feeling away from all the hustle and bustle. Would recommend this place whole-heartedly to anyone hankering after a bit of open space and wild nature!
06/11/2023Clare
Spent 2 nights here for my partners 30th birthday celebrations. A magical place that encapsulates the Lake District! Went for lovely walks, including visiting the cathedral caves and Coniston copper mine waterfalls.
01/11/2023Mark
Getting there was straight forward and well sign posted. The drive up to the farm where the hosts are located is steep, very winding and narrow. It requires a confident driver with focus, although I'm sure the first time is always going to be the most challenging. The Hog House is situated further on along a farm track, accessible by foot. You choose this place because it is a get-away and that is its charm. Everything in the house is well considered and carefully designed with rustic features. The rough stone walls are preserved and the bothy retains it's history and integrity but is perfectly comfortable, cosy and warm. Our stay was delightful and truly memorable. The star of the show is the fabulous view from the bedroom window where there is a little table and stools, perfect for dining and gazing out towards Scafell Pike, watching the stunning landscape change with the light.
30/10/2023Heather
It was genuinely off grid (with data time to time) in a beautiful location at the farm. Lovely hosts, amazing location, nothing could have been better.
27/10/2023Jin-Ah
Fantastically unusual accommodation. Best views in Lake District. Accommodation had everything you could need despite its location. I loved it.
11/10/2023John
We had such a lovely few days at The Hog House for our anniversary. We love little hideaway spots, so this was perfect for us! The location was spot on, and waking up to the sound of sheep munching the grass was great. It was a fantastic place to disconnect from the world for a bit, made all the more special by how well executed The Hog House is renovated. Well done to Ellie and Liam, you should both feel very proud to have created something so special!
02/10/2023Hayley
My partner and I wanted to explore the Lake District and ran away from the chaos of London. We couldn’t pick a better place for our stay. The Hog House is a gorgeous little gem, surrounded by stunning views of the mountains, but most importantly it’s the right place if you want to experience peace and nature. The house had everything we needed, we cooked our own meals, with the radio on in the background. Ellie is a fantastic owner, and she made sure we were enjoying our stay. We definitely recommend to book the Drunken Duck Inn for a delicious meal. A fab reward after a long journey up north. Thank you Ellie!
08/09/2023Lara
The stay at the Hog House was amazing - incredible location, well equipped house, lovely hosts and the most fantastic views from the house on all sides.
01/09/2023Sejla
As soon as we saw the Hog House advertised on Canopy And Stars we knew it would be the perfect place to celebrate a special weddding anniversary. The location was perfect, remote but also accessible to large towns and places we wished to explore, in particular Scafell Pike which we walked one day. The weather was wild and wet for much of the time but hunkering down with the log burner blazing we were super snug and cozy. There are some beautiful walks from the Hog House including some of the Wainwrights. Ellie and Liam, the owners, have created a real gem whilst retaining the character of the building and the Hog House is equipped with everything you need for a few days.
18/08/2023Kare
It’s that moment when you arrive and you first sit and take a breath of fresh clean air and stare out at the magical view that surrounds you and relax and all the tension oozes away! I knew I was in the right place! Walks in every direction right from the door. Wildlife from your window. The Hog House has a lovely comfy bed so needed after a days walking and an excellent easy to use log burner to take out the Cumbrian chills! A kitchen that has everything I needed. Lots of dogs and sheep! Meg the Collie came and sat with me outside on my first evening! Great warm welcome! Liam and Ellie have transformed the old sheep shelter into an excellent mini home away. If you need to switch off it comes highly recommended!
10/07/2023Beth
Just what the doctor ordered…peace, solitude and fantastic views!! Everything you needed for a comfortable stay without being OTT. Liam & Ellie were great hosts and gave us the privacy we wanted whilst also being easy to contact. Thank you for a fabulous short break…we will be back :)
19/06/2023Georgina
What a unique and amazing place! The hog house is in the most extraordinary location, with 360 degree views of valleys and hills that are spectacular - and it's so peaceful! It's tiny, but has everything we needed - it's clear that a lot of thought went into designing it. Would definitely recommend
12/06/2023Fenella
The Hog House is a great little getaway in stunning surroundings. Ellie and Liam have thought of everything you could need for a fantastic break - I cannot recommend this place highly enough. The views alone make it worth staying here! It’s the perfect place for a quiet couple of days to relax and reset!
24/05/2023Lucy
We had the warmest welcome from the family on the farm. They couldn't have been more accommodating. Hog House has every creature comfort which is incredible given the remote location.
22/05/2023Helen
This is one of our favourite Canopy & Stars places we've ever stayed. If you're a hiker or into the outdoors this one is for you. The views and nearby hikes were incredible!
14/04/2023Ruth, Canopy & Stars
Fabulous views, location for wonderful walks thoughtfully refurbished cosy bolt hole and wonderful hosts
03/04/2023Graham
We had an amazing stay at the Hog House. The location is perfect and the views are spectacular. The Hog House is an idyllic place to cosy up by the fire after a long day of exploring. It was clean, comfortable and had everything we needed. We only wished we had booked a longer stay.
03/02/2023Chloe
Had a wonderful stay in The Hog House to start the year. We experienced all the wild weather the Lakes has to offer, but were always kept safe and warm by this incredible little house. The location is unreal - probably amongst the best views we've ever woken up to - and a lot of love has gone into making this small, but perfectly sized, stay homely and welcoming. Loved it.
13/01/2023Jamie
If you are wanting to stay somewhere off grid, quirky, with breathtaking views then the Hog House is for you! All you need to decide in the morning is if to turn left or right as the cumbria way is on the doorstep. We walked to Blag Crag, Skelwith Bridge, Tarn Hows and nearby Coniston and Elterwater. The kitchen is well equipped and cooked many meals whilst enjoying the ever changing view from upstairs, then cozying up by the fire. The hosts were very kind making sure our stay was comfortable.
28/10/2022Kathryn
For our first time in the Lake District, we did not expect such a perfect experience. Not only was the destination incredible for exploration, but the place itself was something out of a fairytale. The place exceeded our expectations and we were blown away. Plus, if you’re looking for a place to get engaged, this is where you want to be. 10/10.
24/10/2022Rachel
It was a lovely an cozy stay. The place is in a very stunning area of the Lake District. The views are breathtaking. We could walk to pretty beautiful places from the Hog house during the day and prepare a warm dinner to eat by the wood burner at night. Really enjoyed it.

What can I say about the Hog House? Quite simply the most idyllic, peaceful, soothing experience of the year so far. Total and utter privacy with 360 views of some of the most beautiful country imaginable. The owners are genuinely wonderful, kind people and you can feel this when staying at the Hog House. The place is immaculate, cosy and clean. I cannot recommend it enough. Oh, and there are the best dogs ever AND goats! I cannot wait to return. Truly 5 stars in every aspect.

I have a wonderful stay at the Hog House. It is set in the most stunning landscape, with views over the rolling Cumbrian hills. The check in was very easy, and Ellie provided very clear instructions. The house was well-kitted out with kitchen equipment and plenty of wood for my two nights using the wood burner. I spent the day exploring the footpaths, followed by cosy evenings admiring the unbelievable views. You only have to walk a few steps from the door, and you are on a bridleway. I loved my stay, and I would absolute love to return again.

Incredible from beginning to end. The Hog House is a gorgeous little hide away in the middle of the Lake District. We were lucky with the weather and the views were just outstanding! Owners were attentive and made sure everything was okay during our stay. Highly recommend!

Stayed for two nights in November. Loved it. Such a fantastic location and everything you need for a bit of solace. Wasn't expecting the kitchen to be so well equipped. Would def recommend.

The Hog house is in a magical setting, the views were amazing. We didn’t get in the car until we left to go home. Walks from the door in stunning landscape.

Wonderful remoteness with amazing views. Comfortable and cosy in a rainy and windy July.

Amazing place to stay, off the beaten track, wonderful scenery and spring lambs outside the door. Even as the weather turned, the views were still impressive.

We enjoyed a fantastic holiday in the hog house. It is a very special place and Ellie was an excellent host.

Truly excellent, everything you need in a cosy space high up on the fells

The Hog House was absolutely perfect as a place to get away from it all. It’s a really well-designed space with everything you might need. It’s so cosy, and after being very unfortunate with the weather the week we were there it was the ideal space to easily get comfortable in the evening, especially with the well-stocked log burner.

We stopped off here after a trip round Scotland. It was the perfect end to a perfect holiday. Cosy, log burner, beef stew and board games. Left a bit of my heart here

Spent 2 nights here for my partners 30th birthday celebrations. A magical place that encapsulates the Lake District! Went for lovely walks, including visiting the cathedral caves and Coniston copper mine waterfalls.

It was genuinely off grid (with data time to time) in a beautiful location at the farm. Lovely hosts, amazing location, nothing could have been better.

Fantastically unusual accommodation. Best views in Lake District. Accommodation had everything you could need despite its location. I loved it.

The stay at the Hog House was amazing - incredible location, well equipped house, lovely hosts and the most fantastic views from the house on all sides.

What a unique and amazing place! The hog house is in the most extraordinary location, with 360 degree views of valleys and hills that are spectacular - and it's so peaceful! It's tiny, but has everything we needed - it's clear that a lot of thought went into designing it. Would definitely recommend

The Hog House is a great little getaway in stunning surroundings. Ellie and Liam have thought of everything you could need for a fantastic break - I cannot recommend this place highly enough. The views alone make it worth staying here! It’s the perfect place for a quiet couple of days to relax and reset!

We had the warmest welcome from the family on the farm. They couldn't have been more accommodating. Hog House has every creature comfort which is incredible given the remote location.

We had an amazing stay at the Hog House. The location is perfect and the views are spectacular. The Hog House is an idyllic place to cosy up by the fire after a long day of exploring. It was clean, comfortable and had everything we needed. We only wished we had booked a longer stay.

Loved it.

For our first time in the Lake District, we did not expect such a perfect experience. Not only was the destination incredible for exploration, but the place itself was something out of a fairytale. The place exceeded our expectations and we were blown away. Plus, if you’re looking for a place to get engaged, this is where you want to be. 10/10.

It was a lovely an cozy stay. The place is in a very stunning area of the Lake District. The views are breathtaking. We could walk to pretty beautiful places from the Hog house during the day and prepare a warm dinner to eat by the wood burner at night. Really enjoyed it.
