Overview
Scandi-design is often lauded for its functionality and style, but where did that genius originate? In the northern reaches of The Yorkshire Dales National Park, you have your answer. Built taking inspiration from the Viking turf houses in Iceland, this space is also themed throughout its interior – with horn glasses, Viking-style oil lamps, and even a helmet in case of impromptu raids. You’ll find everything you need inside, a bed lined with faux fur, a table for hearty feasts – even a cast iron teapot for the wood burning stove. Take it easy for a few days, enjoying the wooded field around you, and the views over the Howgill Fells, cooking smoke-infused delights on your private BBQ. If you’re in the mood for more conventional fare, then just hop across to your kitchen hut to make use of the two-burner gas hob.
If you’re looking to shirk the hard work of cooking, The Fat Lamb is just a mile away and has a mouth-watering menu of locally sourced food – no pillaging required, just a little share of your plunder (please don’t smash the crockery to celebrate the great meal, or as an attempt to request more). You’re in the midst of a beautiful stretch of wild here, and have access to a lot of fells (a word which comes from the Nordic Fjalls, by the way) on your doorstep – so get out there and explore! When the hard day’s exploration is over, head home to marvel at the unpolluted night sky, and settle into your own personal Valhalla fireside.

Meet Anthony
Anthony started with the idea to build a small roundhouse cabin due to his love of history and his inspiration by the beautiful simplicity of a round building. Making and designing a functional cabin was a challenge that Anthony could not resist. The idea of turning it into a business came later. The process was so rewarding that Anthony turned his hand to creating a new cabin and the Icelandic turf house joined the Bowber Head Roundhouse. Anthony has lived at Bowber Head on and off for 35 years so it has become part of his soul. In 1998, they started the vintage bus business as a family and Anthony is still a director. They do mostly weddings and private hires but there is regular bus services from Bowber Head to the local market towns, Kendal, Penrith, and Barnard Castle. Anthony's hobbies are classic cars, joinery and woodwork, and foreign travel. His wife is from Thailand so they visit there quite often.
Wildlife & environment
The property is in the Yorkshire Dales National Park and is a Special Site of Scientific Interest (SSSi). The roundhouse is off-grid with solar power for the shower. The sloping field that the roundhouse is in has been a wild area for a lot of years, Anthony has planted many fruit trees and some ash, walnut and a yew tree which has become a friend. There are numerous birds such as woodpeckers, tits, starlings, thrush, owls, and bats as well as red squirrels living around the area.

Amazing, fun, crazy and definitely memorable. We like something different and this was definitely ticking all our boxes. Didn’t take much to settle in, get the walking legs going for 10 minute walk to the pub, yep you are definitely 10 minutes from a pub. A quick visit for a pint, walk back to a warm cosy turf house, we ate and drank like Vikings, with the house being equipped with everything you need. The wood stove kept us warm and even warmed up mince pies, even pudding wasn’t skipped. Waking up to fresh air and feeling relaxed. Stars in the sky, bright moon and a visual seeing of the international space station and the satellites coming over was a sight we’d never seen. We visited all the small villages, walked for miles in the lanes and fields. Found cheese, and chocolate, rude not to buy any. We had funny hilarious showers, Viking style, definitely a story to tell everyone. Adrian was the perfect host and the surrounding area, full of his own great ventures. Classic coaches, that drive around the Dales and give the old worldly feel. Four amazing nights, with just each other for laughs, card playing and chatting.

It was a really cool and unique experience, Anthony was a brilliant host who made us feel welcome and safe. He’s very knowledgeable about the local area too.

We stayed 4 nights in very wet weather, it was definitely an experience. A good one. We loved Anthonys welcome and enthusiasm and attention to Viking detail. Very cosy and warm all be it authentically dark. We were bracketed as OLDIES but coped well and loved it. Assistance with luggage was greatly appreciated also.
23/09/2024Elaine and Martin
An truly unique and unforgettable experience, we turned our phones off and enjoyed 48 hours of full immersion in nature in Viking style. We would fully recommend to anyone wanting to escape for a few days and to enjoy the simple pleasures of the Viking lifestyle.

We had a fantastic time at the Icelandic Turf House. Anthony was a very warm and welcoming host and his attention to detail was amazing - superb craftmanship! Thank you for sharing this special place with us and for the happy memories.

Greeted with such a lovely warm welcome, the Host Anthony was very enthusiastic & has created the most beautiful turf hut. you can tell a lot of effort and creative talent has gone into the place. It was so so convenient and accommodating everything you need (other than food of course) is there! We felt like royalty being in the presence of such beautiful carvings and structure. surrounded by beautiful trees, views and close to 2 Pubs if you don’t fancy cooking yourself. We happily used the fire stove provided for us - part of the experience! A much needed escape & definitely will be coming back.

It was absolutely wonderful. Such a unique place and a fantastic experience. So beautiful and Anthony’s skill and craftsmanship is exceptional. Every detail was impressive. We loved spending so much time in the outdoor kitchen and cooking on the log burner. The shower was impressively warm and the turf house was so cosy. Anthony was a lovely host and we even left with a gift, a stone Loki which Anthony had made. We had admired his wooden Loki carving in the turf house and had visited the church in Kirkby Stephen where we had seen the original stone carving. Our Loki now has pride of place in our garden. We can’t wait to return in the winter to experience a different season at the turf house.

It was incredible, we had such a fantastic weekend. Gorgeous walks stopping for food and drinks in the pubs near by. Saw lovely wildlife and it was so peaceful.
12/07/2024Kelly
Perfect get away. Turf House was cosy and welcoming. I shared my space with birds, rabbits and a red squirrel. The owner came to check I was settled in on the first evening. The location was perfect for long runs across the fells. I clocked up 50,000 steps on the first full day there. The kitchen was lovely to sit in during the evening. The bathroom was fully equipped, but I wasn't brave enough to use the tin bath provided.
02/07/2024Tink
We had a wonderful stay in the Turf House. Everything was so well thought out, comfortable and clean. It is rustic (and handmade!) but not basic - equivalent to glamping, but with a separate cooking area and bathroom. Everything has been thought of. Anthony is a lovely host and went above and beyond to help with a special request I made. Three pubs in walking distance and great access to local fells. Would highly recommend.
19/05/2024Georgiana
We were looking for peace and quiet, walks, good food, cold swims, and to get away from it all - and Antony’s turf hut ticked all the boxes … with the added extra of great hospitality, imagination and northern lights! Lovely toasty warm and a proper getaway
29/04/2024Rene
He had a great time at the Icelandic turf house. The owners were lovely and gave recommendations for walks. The hut is magical and great place to switch off from the outside world. We booked as a little honeymoon getaway after our wedding and it was the perfect down time.
15/04/2024Catrina
Wonderful very unique stay - extremely nosy with the log burner despite bad weather outside. Close to some great walks, and beautiful scenery all around. All of the little touches inside made the place feel very authentic - we have previously visited Iceland a number of times and it felt just like the real thing!
12/04/2024Richard
Lovely stay despite absolutely terrible weather! The Turf House is very cosy, comfortable and rustic. Beautiful features and touches everywhere from the plates and cups, to the knives, to the decor and architecture - wish you could buy some of it!! The owner is lovely and friendly, on hand if you need anything but not at all Intrusive. Lovely place to get away from everything.
09/04/2024Julie
We already can't wait to go back. Anthony is such a lovely host and always makes us feel welcome. We're so impressed with the thought and care that's gone into the cabin. The area itself is so peaceful and relaxing and the dog absolutely loved it too!
06/04/2024Faye
Me (F, 51), OH (M, 54), Sirius the GSD (M, 8), stayed for 2 nights in absolutely wild weather at the beginning of April, the forecast was 2°c overnight on the first night, and heavy rain for our only full day. I'll admit, I was expecting to be cold, damp and miserable in a glorified shed, but it wasn't like that. At. All. The turf house is really sturdily made, with thick turf insulation over the exterior, and heated up beautifully almost as soon as the stove fired up. The interior is cleverly furnished so you can do everything you need to and still have room for a German Shepherd! Outside, we found the outside kitchen surprising warm with the stove lit and the sides up, and really enjoyed sitting out in the dark until the rain stopped and the owls came out to play. We cooked on the outdoor stove, the outdoor gas stove, and the turf house stove, not bad for a two day stay! If we'd been there longer, I would've loved to slow cook a good thick stew in the big pot, on the indoor stove, but that will have to be next time.
04/04/2024Sarah
Brilliant stay. so peaceful! Birdsong dawn and dusk, and beautiful dark night sky. All of the tiny details were taken care of, ie. plates and cutlery, shower with a view, tin bath, and log burner etc., made it feel authentic. Great host too!
27/03/2024Shaun
What an absolute hidden gem. This place is so unique & gave us an experience of a lifetime. From arriving to leaving, we enjoyed every minute of it & we can’t thank the host, Anthony, enough. Anthony was so accommodating & really welcoming.

We had a great couple of nights at the Turf House. The accommodation was really well thought out, the location offered a number of local walks and Anthony was an excellent host.
28/09/2023david richard ashley
It was one of the best experiences we have had. The level of attention paid to the design of the Turf House and our comfort was amazing. Showers were surprisingly warm, and we were well looked after with firewood and blankets to make for some great, cozy evenings. The host, Anthony, was such an affable and conscientious host. I hope he keeps building.
19/09/2023Philip
What an amazing experience. The attention to detail was fantastic, truly making a memorable Viking experience. Everything in the turf house was hand made and any mod cons cleverly disguised. The setting was great with privacy from the other property on site. The host was attentive and went out of his way to make our stay a true delight (even making some Viking axes for our son, who was celebrating his birthday). Superb and highly recommended.
15/08/2023Helen
Didnt know what to expect but superb and certainly would recommend .
05/08/2023Robert
We had a fantastic stay, the Icelandic Turf House was so much fun - comfortable, unique and with such attention to detail in every aspect of it.
03/08/2023Katie
We celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary at the Icelandic turf house. I can not think of a better place to have celebrated the "wood" anniversary! The attention to detail of creating a turf house with all the modern comforts rendered in wood was phenomenal. It was very comfortable with two english setters and they loved watching the birds and listening to the pheasants in the woodland. The bathroom doubles up as a bird hide and a woodpecker and I had an equally alarming meeting when I was in the shower!! If you have the weather for it, my advise to you is to get the sides down on the kitchen as soon as you can. Such wonderful views!
23/06/2023April
The Icelandic turf house is amazing from the daisies on the roof to the wildlife around in the treetops to the lovely walks and scenery at the door> Anthony has thought of everything and he is very friendly. He thinks we are the only people to stay in the turfhouse and the roundhouse- and it has become a family favourite as my son, daughter and partnerm brother and wife have all been and had great adventures too!
17/06/2023Helen
very friendly welcome from the owner nice little touches eg birthday card and choclates for my wifes birthday very clean and well prsented accomodation in beautiful countryside with amazing views and walks
05/06/2023david
We had an absolutely fantastic time at the Turf House. The owners were incredibly kind and welcoming and the accommodation was great. We loved all the small details that’d gone into the design and it really was everything we hoped it’d be. We’d happily return one day, or recommend the Turf House to anyone. We were very lucky with glorious sunshine during our stay, but can see how it’d also be great in the middle of winter - very cosy, no doubt!
19/05/2023James
Amazing stay in a great location. The hut was comfortable, had everything we needed and the attention to detail was fantastic.
05/05/2023Sarah
Exploring the Icelandic Turfhouse for the first time was a real treat. Anthony has handcrafted the whole build himself and he even handmade the crockery. It's a genuine Viking experience and one that makes you slow down and appreciate the small things. Thoroughly enjoyed the adventure and wish I could've stayed longer, thank you to Anthony and Pen for a wonderful stay - not one to be forgotten anytime soon!
24/04/2023Sarah, Canopy & Stars
What an amazing place to stay! Completely unique accommodation and the attention to detail is fantastic. The hut (and accompanying kitchen and bathroom) is beautiful and all of the practical details have been very well thought out. Everything you need is there, even if the weather is as wet and wild as it was for our stay! The bed was warm and cosy even in the cold, and our 8yo daughter loved sleeping up on the top bunk. The host was lovely and very welcoming. We loved it and wait to go back.
10/04/2023Hazel
Amazing stay. Absolutely fantastic place to getaway with your partner.
20/03/2023Yordanka
A wonderful return to the wild experience with all the trimmings. Switch off, unwind, enjoy the thoughtful welcome touches (treats for my doggie went above and beyond my expectations) and warm reception from the genuinely kind hosts. I wanted to get away from the world and tech and did exactly that. A tin bath under the night sky with a roaring fire was one of many highlights of my stay. Thank you!!
13/03/2023Clare
beautiful handmade turf house with separate kitchen area and another hut with a shower and compost loo- rustic and bijou, beautiful views
30/12/2022Katie
We were the first ones to stay. It was amazing, there has clearly been so much thought and detail put into it, from the the horn cups to the carved bed frame. Will definitely be staying again at some point. 11/10

We had a fantastic couple of nights here at the Turfhouse. We arrived on the Saturday afternoon and had pre arranged with the host to check in early, which was much appreciated. We spent time cooking on the fires, relaxing, listening to music and chatting between us. We visited some local towns on the Sunday afternoon before returning to the Turfhouse for more relaxing! The hosts were very friendly and were available via text. We would highly recommend this stay to anyone who enjoys the outdoors, with a twist! Thank you so much for this stay, we enjoyed it enormously.

We were looking for peace and quiet, walks, good food, cold swims, and to get away from it all - and Antony’s turf hut ticked all the boxes … with the added extra of great hospitality, imagination and northern lights! Lovely toasty warm and a proper getaway

He had a great time at the Icelandic turf house. The owners were lovely and gave recommendations for walks. The hut is magical and great place to switch off from the outside world. We booked as a little honeymoon getaway after our wedding and it was the perfect down time.

Wonderful very unique stay - extremely nosy with the log burner despite bad weather outside. Close to some great walks, and beautiful scenery all around. All of the little touches inside made the place feel very authentic - we have previously visited Iceland a number of times and it felt just like the real thing!

We already can't wait to go back. Anthony is such a lovely host and always makes us feel welcome. We're so impressed with the thought and care that's gone into the cabin. The area itself is so peaceful and relaxing and the dog absolutely loved it too!

Brilliant stay. so peaceful! Birdsong dawn and dusk, and beautiful dark night sky. All of the tiny details were taken care of, ie. plates and cutlery, shower with a view, tin bath, and log burner etc., made it feel authentic. Great host too!

What an absolute hidden gem. This place is so unique & gave us an experience of a lifetime. From arriving to leaving, we enjoyed every minute of it & we can’t thank the host, Anthony, enough. Anthony was so accommodating & really welcoming.

We had a fantastic stay, the Icelandic Turf House was so much fun - comfortable, unique and with such attention to detail in every aspect of it.

The Icelandic turf house is amazing from the daisies on the roof to the wildlife around in the treetops to the lovely walks and scenery at the door> Anthony has thought of everything and he is very friendly. He thinks we are the only people to stay in the turfhouse and the roundhouse- and it has become a family favourite as my son, daughter and partnerm brother and wife have all been and had great adventures too!

very friendly welcome from the owner nice little touches eg birthday card and choclates for my wifes birthday very clean and well prsented accomodation in beautiful countryside with amazing views and walks

Amazing stay in a great location. The hut was comfortable, had everything we needed and the attention to detail was fantastic.

Thank you!!

beautiful handmade turf house with separate kitchen area and another hut with a shower and compost loo- rustic and bijou, beautiful views
