Wild Spas

When you need something to smooth out all the twists and tension of daily life, you might turn to a spa or some time outside in nature. But now, you don't have to choose. Here are our favourite natural spas, where soothing baths and saunas come surrounded by trees, birdsong and a couple of days of perfect peace.

This is just one of ten types of experience in The Feel Good 100, a series of ways to boost your wellbeing with the outdoors. You can see the other types here, or sign up to our newsletter, and have them sent straight to your inbox over the next few weeks.

Lark Rise, Northamptonshire

1. Lake deck sauna

Down at the lake, through the trees from your cabin, you'll find the sauna deck, right next to its own rather large natural plunge pool. You'll need to book a slot, but there are hammocks in the woods up at your space to make the wait swing by and an outdoor bath if you need a soak after your steam.

Oaken Fort, Powys

2. The fort spa

By the time you get around to finding the hot tub that sits with incredible views over the pallisade around this remarkable place in the Welsh hills, you need a relaxing spa day to stop your mind being any more blown. Oaken Fort has you covered, with the perfect balance of wow and ahhh.

The Spa, Devon

3. The Woodland infinity pool

The unique structure of The Spa, with its two cuboid living areas separated by a heated inifinity pool, will wow you visually then work out any tension in your body. There's a sauna on the deck, a pizza oven, a swinging chair and nothing but woods around to trouble your mind for a second.

Helvellyn Hut, Cumbria

4. Mountain view spa bath

After you've climbed up into the hills just south of Keswick, you might be expecting the incredible views, but probably not the Japanese spa bath sunk into the deck. This might just be the best place we've ever seen to retire to post hike and soak up a sunset.

Hay Barn, Devon

5. Double tubs

At Hay Barn, even the debate about who gets the outdoor bath disappears, as twin tubs on the hillside make for a truly wild couple's spa day. Or you can stroll over to the hillside sauna together for a steam with a view of the lake and the Devon hills.

Pomeroy Treehouse, Somerset

6. Treetop steams

This amazing treehouse in Somerset just keeps taking you a step higher. The spa tub on the deck is the first, the twin outdoors showers are the second, the sauna is the third and the fourth comes when you climb the spiral staircase to the roof terrace cinema deck.

Willow Warbler Treehouse, Stirling

7. Surround spa

The shared sauna near Willow Warblers Treehouse isn't just in the woods, its turf-roofed, so you feel like nature is wrapping round you as you steam your cares away. You may meet others coming to hide away, but you've got a private outdoor bath if you want to commune with the natural world solo.

Hideout Treehouse, Devon

8. Sliding bath

If you're not sure how much outdoor bathing you really want to do, this is the spot to head for. Hideout Treehouse's innovative bath on rails can slide outside when you want to feel the sun on your skin, then back indoors when you want a simple, cosy soak.

Galtres Treehouse, Yorkshire

9. Hot steam, cold plunge

As if the bath with a view of rolling fields, the swing suspended under the deck and the firepit area weren't fun enough, the guys at Galtres put a barrel-shaped sauna by the lake, just far enough away that you have time to bottle out of the plunge and stretch out on a waterside recliner instead.

Scandi Cabin, Herefordshire

10. Scandi style

Stylish, chic and perfectly put together. If that's you, then Scandi Cabin is your perfect match. You can drift from the green bowl of the hot tub to the sauna on the next tier of the deck, rising and falling as you walk round the site, while your heart rate stays at a gentle low.
