The Sleepcation

This one is for those who need a rest, a proper rest, a break from frantic living. No alarm clock, no usual routine, just the rare chance to reset. Explore these places to do nothing and enjoy waking up in one of the most beautiful settings in the country. Sounds like looking after yourself to us.

This is just one of ten types of experience in The Feel Good 100, a series of ways to boost your wellbeing with the outdoors. You can see the other types here, or sign up to our newsletter, and have them sent straight to your inbox over the next few weeks.

Faraway Treehouse, Cumbria

51. Wild swim before bed

Spend morning wild swimming in the river, an afternoon on a lounger in the dappled shade of the trees, an evening with dinner overlooking the pond, and a night in the bath with views of the woodland beyond – there’s nothing that can keep you from slumber.

Southcombe Piggery, Devon

52. Sleep al fresco

For one of the wildest nights in our collection, sleep in a four-poster bed surrounded by billowing curtains, fresh air and the stars above. When you wake, head off to the hillside sauna or the twin outdoor baths, never losing the intense connection with nature that sleeping wild, and yet in glorious comfort, has given you.

Falling Water, Yorkshire

53. Waterfall sounds to lull you to sleep

Built next to a small waterfall – this is the place to go for a good night’s sleep. With the sounds of rushing water, the odd owl’s hoot, and the last embers of the wood burner tumbling apart – your limbs will have never felt so heavy.

The Sheiling, Perth & Kinross

54. Natural light

There’s no wifi here, so expect to wind down not to the glare of blue light, but instead to sunset over the broad Tay, where seagull swoops, and light dazzling on the water will make the sleepy amber hue perfect for drifting off. Then it’s easy as pressing the button to lower the blinds.

Humble Bee, Devon

55. Twilight in the outdoor bath

Spend twilight in the private outdoor bath, with wood pigeon call hooting through the wood, leaf canopies brushing against one another in one long, rushing melody like the crashing of waves. Sip a glass of something chilled, and let the forest come to quiet, just like your mind, it’s time to sleep.

Logoutt, Wales

56. Already dreaming

Do dreams start before sleep? Here they do. Wander round the lake, with bare feet on the cool grass. Stroll across the ornate wooden bridge to the tiny island, look out to sea, and sigh. Return to a cabin to watch as light falls, and your warm surrounds are just the hygge you need to drift off.

Brae, Ayrshire

57. Fireside nightcap

With towering pines behind, and the sea out front, long deep sighs on the porch would be enough to drop eyelids – even if there weren’t also a candlelit bath to slump into. If your legs aren’t jelly, and your shoulders aren’t boulders, sway on the rocking chairs by an open outdoor fire to be sure.

The Nest, Devon

58. Soothing starry hot tub

The views stretch all the way to Exmoor, but you needn’t look that far to find a good night’s sleep. After a day taking on beaches and hiking trails – you’ll be ready to call it a day. Or at least, until you see the hot tub under a starry sky. Then, it’ll be bed after a stretch in the bubbles.

Bracken House, Cumbria

59. Mountain air naps

There's almost no need to take pictures when you're out for the day, as the endless views from the bed, through the window of this cabin high up in the west of The Lake District, are a living reminder of where you've been and where you might explore next. Wake up ready for the trails laid out in front of you.

Hidey-hole Cabin, Sussex

60. Late night movie

If you’ve not lost every ounce of energy to a day at Bewl Water round the corner, your lead-like limbs will never recover from transforming your picture window into a movie screen, and spending the last hours using the popcorn maker. Sure, a film might keep you awake, but you can lie in all morning.

Tired of being tired: are sleepcations really a thing?

Just when you thought that trends couldn’t get any more weird than goblin mode and living your grandma era, here comes a whole new craze - sleep. That thing we all do, almost every day of our lives, is suddenly cool. Or if not cool, then at least extremely desirable. Good sleep is now so rare for many of us, that we’re taking time off just to do it. It’s called a sleepcation and it’s yet another symptom of our stressed modern lives.

Cabin Inspiration

Cabins for a great night's sleep

When you’ve had a blissful eight hours of shut-eye you can take on the world, but deep, mood-boosting sleep can feel elusive in our busy lives. That’s why sometimes, it’s important to escape the routine and prioritise uninterrupted duvet time. Swap work deadlines, pinging alerts, light pollution and traffic noise for the chance to unwind in the peace and tranquillity of nature. Put a spring in your step and take a look at our remote cabins that set the scene for a great night’s sleep.

Relax with nature sounds

We've put together a Spotify playlist filled with crackling campfires, calming birdsong and the sound of trees rustling in the wind. Close your eyes and fill your ears. We also asked a couple of members of the team for playlists fit for these times.
