Overview
Vinha da Manta is stunning. The eight canvas lodges are on raised wooden decks, each in their own secluded spot with dramatic views down over the Mondego Valley. The estate has an eco-filtered natural pool for swimming, with a bar where you can get drinks and lunches and meet other guests. For your main evening meal, owner Menno’s cooking is not to be missed - he cooks four-course gourmet meals every other day using home-grown produce wherever possible. A huge continental breakfast is included every morning of your stay.
The lodges come complete with private kitchens and outdoor bathrooms; interior furnishings are bespoke designs inspired by the shapes and colours of the surrounding landscape, while natural materials, neutral colours and soft lighting create a calm, relaxing environment. They're surrounded by olive, almond, peach, cherry and fig trees, as well as the apple trees after which Macieira Lodge is named.
Horses are Jacqueline’s passion, and one of the reasons she and Menno moved from Holland to Portugal. She’s happy to take guests out for a ride on one of their six horses at Vinha da Manta. Menno and Jacqueline can organise activities from guided hikes to wine tasting, or you can go exploring by yourself – fantastic wild swimming, prehistoric cave paintings, Moorish fortresses and much more.

Food & Drink
At Vinha Da Manta
Vinha Da Manta is located in a fantastic area, where small-scale farmers and producers offer unique local specialities. Renowned are the cheeses from Celorico Da Beira, the cherries from Faia, the wine from Aldeia Viçosa and not to forget the olive oil from the valley below - its fruity flavour may remind you of artichoke.

The kitchen is Menno’s domain - he serves a daily breakfast, and an sumptuous evening meal every other night, all made from fresh produce either from his own vegetable garden or from local farmers. He describes his style as "Mediterranean classics with a touch of cheeky input from myself". Think clams with piri-piri and coriander, lamb loin in anise herbs and presunto (dried Portuguese ham from Iberian pigs), tagine with figs and bio-dynamic lamb, bread and pizza from the wood oven and pesto made from Portuguese basil.
If on Menno's days off you'd like to cook for yourself, each lodge has a fully-equipped kitchen and there are shops in Porto de Carne (4km) or Guarda (12km) where you can stock up.
Pubs & Restaurants
Besides Vinha da Manta's own very popular restaurant there are several restaurants in the surroundings ranging from the “all you can eat for almost nothing” to the more “fine dining” venues.

Activities
At Vinha Da Manta
Vinha da Manta is the perfect place to do absolutely nothing - just read a book at the pool, take an occasional nap in the shade and get a snack and drink at the pool.
Outdoor & Active
Hiking
The “Parque Natural da Serra de Estrela” is famous for its rugged granite formations, alternating with savannah-like plains where the indigenous Bordeleira sheep still graze. This protected natural area, that has escaped mass tourism, can be discovered from Vinha Da Manta with some great tours. Old trails that run criss-cross through the area, that often date back to Roman times, lead the walker over vast mountain ranges and through sparsely populated valleys, where wild boars, eagles and foxes wander around in large numbers. This area, even during the hot Iberian summer, is a green oasis. Menno and Jacqueline are happy to drop you off at a good starting point if you're not driving.

Horse riding
This is the perfect place for horse lovers, whether you're an experienced rider or just a beginner. Jacqueline has been working with horses practically her whole life and is more than happy to take guests out fir a ride (at the moment this is limited to two guests at a time).
Swimming
There are several places where you can swim. The natural swimming pond at Vinha da Manta itself has both a deep end for diving and a shallower end for kids. There's also a river within walking distance, ideal for swimming and playing. It is always cool and calm. There are several places. What we think as the best place, which can be reached by car, there are many flat rocks where you can easily lie down on and the kids can play safely. And of course, there are many other places that are not even discovered yet. Just a short drive away, there is a large reservoir, with a small beach where you can enjoy a quiet long swim. There is also a “praia fluvial” in almost every village, which are beaches along the riverside. They often have a little bar with cold drinks and ice creams and a slide for children.
Local villages
In Portugal, in the old villages, there is still plenty of population, and they are very interested in anyone who comes along. Our environment is 5000 years old cultural landscape. From the prehistoric rock art here in the Coa Valley, through the many Roman roads, even next to our property, Moorish fortresses and castles around here to the tangible traces of the medieval Iberian history in the old Guarda from the 11th century. You can find something back from every age in the landscape, which includes people who live partly in the 21st century, but clearly have their roots in an almost medieval society. The old ladies dressed in black with a bundle of sticks on their heads, the last donkeys, the common baker's ovens, the Christmas fire, the busy village pub, the Eastern processions, in short, everything here is very much alive and takes place in an environment that is as it was 200 years ago.
Further afield, you can visit Salamanca (Spain), The Douro valley, and the highest point of Portugal (2000m) which is also a ski resort in winter.

Meet your hosts
From owners Menno and Jacqueline:
"We are Menno and Jacqueline. In 2011 we moved to Portugal together with our 3 children, Finn (now 16), Thijm (now 13) and Kate (now 10). We wanted to create something special for and by ourselves, where we can both live and share our passions at the same time. Menno's passion is cooking and as a viticulturist he is also passionate about wine. Horses are Jacqueline's main passion.
We were both active in the business sector in the Netherlands. Menno was manager of Amsterdam Central Station and Jacqueline was an IT consultant. Vinha Da Manta represents a time for new challenges and a different interpretation of our everyday lives.

Vinha Da Manta is a small estate of 10 hectares that we arrange as we would like to have it when we ourselves go on vacation. We created beautiful spaces and an environment in which peace and comfort together with friendliness and a sociable atmosphere. We love to share all of this with our guests.
We opened the doors of Vinha Da Manta in the summer of 2012. We realized an accommodation where we ourselves would like to go to – light, air, space, enjoying the nature, good food, a good atmosphere and luxury. That is why we would like to keep Vinha da Manta small and intimate, with a certain amount of exclusivity. We run the company ourselves, which means that everything is done to maintain our own high standards. We are constantly improving what we have created, and make it even better, year after year. We are constantly seeking for a way to provide our guests the best holiday experience possible and at the same time we also have a clear ecological conscience. We combine "green" with luxury. We are committed to protecting the relationship with the land, the local community and the natural environment, what goes well together with a luxurious, outdoor holiday. That is also the reason we have a natural pool, cleaned only by plants in which the water is better than from your home tap. Our own well provides us with the purest drinking water. We use local sustainable wood to build the platforms for our lodges and our fixtures and furnishes are designed in conjunction with the shapes and colours of the surrounding landscape. We grow our own vegetables for our restaurant as much as possible, all organic, just like our cheese, eggs and milk. Our fruit trees, vines, fig trees and olive trees are also organic. Total darkness is now a real treat, so we try to minimize light pollution with solar soft lighting. These are all just examples of the first steps we are taking, small but durable ones, to be able to share with our guests and taking them in a new way of seeing the world."

Our stay at Vinha Da Manta’s Macieira Lodge was completely fantastic. Menno, Jacqueline and the rest of their team looked after us so incredibly well and were kind and thoughtful throughout the whole holiday. - Menno’s meals were truly outstanding, we’re still in awe about the quality of food from the homemade pizzas on our first night to the stunning steak and veggie curry on the others. - The natural swimming pool was so beautiful and refreshing, and the frogs are a welcome companion as you glide past the lillypads! - Finally, the tents themselves are fabulous. Beautifully spacious and they come with everything you would ever need. We honestly loved our stay so much and really hope that we can come back in the future and get to re-experience the most tranquil, friendly and beautiful holiday we’ve been on in a long time!

We had a really lovely stay at vinha de manta. The setting couldn't have been more beautiful - looking over the valley from the middle of an olive and cherry orchard. The hosts were incredibly welcoming, they encouraged a very sociable atmosphere with the other guests and they even cooked us a huge feast on the last night.

This place is amazing - the whole family had such a great time. Really comfortable camping holiday with all the perks of hot showers and great food - with the bonus of camping in the Serra Da Estrella . Jacqueline and Mennes, along with their helpers look after everyone as if they are welcoming you in to their own home. We also tried many of their recommended local restuarants and trips - kayaking down the Rio de Mondego was a of road adventure . Never to be disappointed! My children were devastated to leave the large menagerie of pets and animals! The lodge was private, clean and perfectly equipped if you want to cook for yourself. All you have to do it turn up with clothes! - all the beds hv heated blankets and lovely bedding. We will be recommending this place to everyone!
