Overview
Lofftwen Longhouse looks a little like your fantasy of leaving behind city life and escaping to a smallholding in the hills; except the Fulford family beat you to it. Rescuing it from disrepair, they’ve restored the 17th century traditional Welsh Longhouse to stunning effect, uncovering the original inglenook fireplace, bread oven, and the iconic flagstone floor. Break out the walking boots and wellies and even the shortest of strolls will be rewarded with epic views, with plenty more demanding routes to suit. The Longhouse sits in 320 acres of farmland, which for the last four years the owners have been slowly restoring and rewilding, with impressive results. More than 70 different bird species have flocked to the area, with sightings of weasels, stoats, and many other mammals. Red squirrels and pine martens are edging onto the western boundaries, and otters meander along the River Irfon below the southern boundary. This is a place of deep rest and respite from city life, and when you tire of bracken ridden cloud-dipped landscapes, and the echoing call of an ancient line of pedigree Hereford cattle, come home to bathe in natural spring water in the feature bathtub.
Somehow the nearest town (officially the Smallest Town in Britain) is eight minutes’ walk away, yet feels like 800 miles with the fields, trees, and contours creating a natural shield to hide you from the slow country life that rolls by. Within that walk is The Drover’s Rest, award-winning restaurant and tearoom with views of the River Irfon, as well as Caffi Sosban – serving breakfast, lunch and occasional dinners or The Neuadd Arms, offering classic pub food, warm fires and ales from their own micro-brewery. In anything other than torrential downpour, you’ve no excuse not to enjoy the wild swimming, canoeing or fishing at Abergwesyn, Irfon and Wye – all short drives away, or the menagerie of hiking trails, National Nature Reserves or the desperately tempting Penderyn Distillery an hour away.

Meet your hosts
Meet Will, Jane, Charlie, Bill and Hannah
As a family we had been thinking for some time about taking on the restoration and expansion of an ancient woodland not too far from London. We never envisaged buying a farm in mid-Wales, but when we were introduced to Lofftwen it was love at first sight. As we started to discover the stunning wild beauty of this hidden part of Wales, we knew this was the right place for us.
The first five years have been a rollercoaster of an adventure and exceeded our wildest dreams. We've been humbled by the generosity of people living locally, both in their warm welcome and the time and knowledge they’ve given to the project, and astounded by how quickly the trees have grown and the way the land and wildlife have responded. We’ve learnt a huge amount too, gaining new skills and finding the occasional new muscle along the way, all the time surrounded by some of the healthiest air and purest water in the UK. We hope that during your stay you’ll experience a glimpse into this world while relaxing and recharging your batteries ready for whatever your next adventure might be.
Wildlife & the environment
As an ecological project, our goal is to sustain as much diverse wildlife as possible. We have already seen a huge increase in biodiversity, particularly over the last 3 years as the trees have started to mature. More than 70 birds have been identified, alongside a growing list of mammals that include weasel, stoat, badger, fox, hedgehog and various bat species. Red squirrels have been reported just outside the farms western boundary (we are within the red squirrel conservation area), and there are otters in the river Irfon which snakes just beyond our southern boundary. In addition, you can find over 30 different species of tree and over 100 species of wildflowers, grasses, ferns, mosses, lichens and fungi. The list is growing every year.
The property is partly off grid. We have mains electricity but all other services are off grid, including our own spring for water.
We partner with local people on different aspects of the project. Local bird enthusiasts have set up a bird feeding station and bird hide. They also maintain over 30 nest boxes. This year we successfully raised over 30 young pied flycatchers, one of Britain’s rarest birds. Another local couple keep rare breed Eriskay ponies on the farm and are embarking on a breeding programme to boost their numbers (about 400 in the world), and another keep natural beehives in our small orchard.

We stayed with two other couples and had an amazing time. It was a great base to explore the Brecon Beacons and spend a cozy Sunday indoors sheltering from the rain.

Very well equipped property, with excellent kitchen appliances, modern bathrooms and very comfy beds. Plus a cosy log burner. Lots of lovely touches around the house and full of character. Great communication from the owners. Spectacular walks right on our doorstep.

We had 3 days at Lofftwen and had an amazing time. It was a very chilled, peaceful retreat made even more enjoyable by having thick frost and snow during our stay. We enjoyed exploring the beautiful countryside right from our door and returning back at Lofttwen which was cosy and had everything you could possibly want from holiday accommodation and such lovely quality.

Absolutely fantastic stay! Stayed at Lofftwen Longhouse for a birthday with friends and it could not have been better. The house is beautiful and renovated to such a high spec and the location is fantastic. The kitchen is well equipped for cooking meals. The host, Will, was very friendly and replied very quickly to any queries we had.

A fantastic rural spot with walks, views and woodland on the doorstep. A really well appointed property with everything you needed.

Myself and my two sisters stayed at Lofftwen for a special birthday weekend and it was the perfect place for a wet March weekend. We loved its cosy feel, with the log burner and large sofa and everything is so beautifully done and well equipped. Its in the perfect location for feeling like you're away from civilization yet there are amenities not far away in the village.
22/03/2024Amy
Wonderfull stay at the Lofftwen Longhouse. Warm welcome from Graham and Will. Nice, quite remote place but you're still able to walk down to the village with pubs and options to buy stuff. Beautiful and up to date, quality interior. Not to much to add, I think the pictures and description represent the longhouse well. So I just can recommend the place for a stay. Especially if you're up to hiking through the surroundings of the Lofftwen Farm.
21/08/2023Johannes
It was exactly what we expected - excellent outdoors, comfortable house with all the required amenities etc.

This was such a fantastic place to stay that we want to book again for next year! The longhouse itself is beautifully renovated. It preserves history whilst providing a modern & enchanting holiday home. The kitchen is well equipped, the baths are deep & luxurious & the beds were super comfy. The farm that the longhouse is situated on is a wonderful place full of wildlife, fabulous walks & beautiful views. We loved watching the birds feed from the hide as well. It’s was such a delightful place to be. We adored all the people working on the farm. Not only did they give us some wonderful up close & personal experiences with the animals, they were all super helpful & welcoming. Adrian & Graham were such friendly & open people, they made our stay extra special. The local village is also great. Just a short walk away - the garage store is superbly stocked (they even had vegan chocolate) & the cafe does a lovely coffee and milkshake - we visited twice! This is honestly the best holiday experience we have had in a long time & we would highly recommend staying at Lofftwen for a relaxing and extra special holiday. We can’t wait to hopefully explore more next year.

We stayed over Christmas and had a great relaxing festive break. The longhouse was rustic, cozy, wonderful original features and antique furniture and furnishings but lovely modern bathrooms and kitchen. The hosts were also kind enough to decorate for Christmas, including a small Christmas tree and a few other small decorations throughout. The kitchen was very well stocked with great appliances and more than the bare essentials (although we did bring a few extra bits of equipment because we were planning a full Christmas dinner with all the trimmings). Hosts were lovely and responsive and there was also a gorgeous farm cat Juno that loved to wonder in and out! We enjoyed some lovely walks around the local town which was very close if you need to pop to the shops or the pub. We also went on a much longer 8 mile walk through local countryside which was stunning!

We had a fantastic stay at Lofftwen Longhouse! Absolutely gorgeous and super clean cottage, fabulous log burner, high spec appliances and very comfy beds! The farm is well looked after, sitting in stunning countryside - our dogs absolutely loved their holiday! Definitely suitable for those wanting a truly rural and remote experience, getting back to nature and enjoying the countryside. We love that the farm is being managed to build up the local biodiversity, using natural spring water and even having a biodigester!

We couldn't have asked for a better experience. The longhouse was really comfortable and in such an idyllic location. All of the creature comforts that we needed were provided but we also had the outdoor firepit BBQ for the evenings, with the added incredible starry skies. There were excellent walks nearby and plenty of places to enjoy within an hour's drive.

Lofftwen is a remarkable building, brought back to life from its disused state. Much like the site itself which Will and Jane have been lovingly rewilding. Keep your eyes peeled for all the animals and birds that call Lofftwen home. The longhouse is the perfect place to gather with friends and family to have a relaxing time in nature.
