Overview
River is the newest addition to the By the Wye site, sleeping six, with the added benefit of being accommodating to those with additional accessibility needs. Inside, it looks as if River’s grown up out of the ground, with natural wood shapes curling around to make towel rails, handles, and struts. So, no matter whether you’re outdoors, enjoying birdsong on the deck whilst you barbeque lunch or if you’re indoors toasting your feet in front of the wood burner, you’re enjoying the wild shapes of nature.
Even if it rains, a covered deck, and a selection of games indoors will prove a fun afternoon, or a relaxing evening in with the patter of raindrops on the canvas. But if it’s dry, you’ll find yourself out and about exploring the area around Hay-On-Wye, making use of the activities like canoeing, paddle boarding or wild swimming nearby. Offa’s Dyke actually runs through the site, if you fancy taking on a stretch. Or take it easy, either exploring the town for its many shops and restaurants, or even easier, by booking reflexology or a massage on site! Whatever you do, you’ll come away with a calm you can only find by the River Wye.

Meet the Farnworth Family
Dawn and Steve (aka nanny and grampy) ran The Start B&B, successfully, in Hay on Wye for over two decades. When the opportunity came to buy woodland adjacent to their property they jumped at the chance. It has always been a dream to build a treehouse and go live in the woods, while they are still searching for the perfect tree, they opened By the Wye glamping to share the love of all things green.
Their son Dan is an arborist and in 2011 was lucky enough to meet his future wife Edith. They back-packed the world together before getting married in 2016 and they now have three children and joined the By the Wye team in 2018. Edith works in the office and is likely to be the one you speak to before arrival. Dan is head ranger and in charge of check-in's. The Farnworths are a family of adventurers and between them have visited over 30 countries, with many more on the bucket list. They look forward to welcoming you to the By the Wye woods.
Wildlife & environment
By the Wye is situated in 10 acres of mixed ancient native woodland on the banks of the river in Hay on Wye. The wood has been sympathetically structured to allow for space for the luxury tents with strategic tree work and maintenance done to encourage native species to thrive. A section of the wood is a designated site of special scientific interest (SSSI) because of its inhabitants including owls, bats, badgers, newts, dormice and the occasional otter.
