Overview
Hilary left Bristol in search of a more tranquil life and now, with Big Red, she invites you to come and try it for yourself. The 1987 Bluebird American school bus sits in a secluded glade on her farm, with the wood-fired hot tub outside and a shower and loo in a little cabin of their own, just behind the bus.
Gorgeous views across the Usk Valley of the Brecon Beacons change every minute with the shifting light, the clouds drifting by, and you're surrounded by birdsong from dawn and dusk. And if you're lucky you'll see an incredibly clear starscape at night, whilst you sit by the fire. Big Red found her way to Holland after her academic career was over in the States, spending some time as a Santa's grotto, which explains her colour. She's been glammed up quite a bit since then, with a wood burner and a super king-size bed making her a cosy, romantic escape.
Around you, masses of sky, farmland, woodland and not much else. It's a place to get back in touch with nature, drink the delicious spring water and laze in the hot tub or lie in the grass with kites and kestrels gliding above you. If you fancy treating yourself, then drive into Usk and check out the bars and restaurants!

Meet Hilary
Hilary is from Bristol originally, living and working there running several businesses until 2017. The crazy idea of moving to Wales was hatched and she bought New House Farm with 11 acres of land. After living in a caravan for a year, so she could get the house into some kind of order, Hilary finally moved in. It's been a labour of love and a hard journey at times but, she does not regret a thing. The farmhouse is a very special place. It's 600 years old in parts and who knows how many years before that date this place was a settlement. Hilary feels honoured to be part of its journey. And the glamping spot allows people to share in this little slice of heaven.
Wildlife & the environment
There is lots of wildlife! The sound of owls, mainly barn and tawny, at dusk and dawn is very common. There're also several types of wild deer, badgers, bats, very rare dormice and loads and loads of rabbits. Hilary encourages all the wild birds. There are jays, swallows, house martins, woodpeckers, wrens, robins and every other kind of garden bird you can imagine. The valley is a hot spot for all kinds of birds of prey too like kites, buzzards and kestrels.

We had the most amazing 2-night stay in this beautifully converted bus, and it was an experience to remember! The attention to detail was absolutely incredible—everything was so well thought through, from the cozy interiors to the little touches that made it feel extra special. The bus was not only stylish but also fully equipped with everything we could possibly need. Hilary, our host, was so kind and accommodating. She went above and beyond to ensure our stay was perfect, and her warmth and hospitality made us feel right at home. It’s clear she has poured so much care and love into creating this unique glamping experience. The wood-fired hot tub was the ultimate highlight—such a relaxing way to unwind in the peaceful rural surroundings. Sitting under the stars in the warm water was pure bliss. We can’t recommend this place enough and are already looking forward to staying again. If you’re looking for a magical, unique getaway, this is it. Amazing!

This was an amazing 2 night break for me and my partner, it was -3 at night so was brisk but the wood burner worked an absolute treat, Usk is just down the road is your want to go to a Pub for drinks or lunch. Our welcome was warm and would definitely visit again.

Wow, the perfect getaway, we’ve stayed at many places picked out on this website but this has to be a favourite. Lovely private spot, beautifully kitted out bud with loads of sockets, great running spring water, comfy massive bed, great kitchen with hug fridge and the list goes on. Hilary was a lovely host and the hot tub fired up super quick to whatever temp we wanted (we disagree with someone below that said it didn’t get that hot…)

Fantastic stay, great communication from the owner. View were stunning, especially the cloud inversions in the morning. Hot tub was fantastic to relax in after a long day. The bed so so comfy, we slept really well. Facilities were perfect, everything we needed and every where was clean and tidy. Perfect get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

We had a fabulous time staying in Big Red. It was very well equipped with everything we needed. Very comfortable and cosy with the woodburner. Lovely big comfy bed. The hot tub was a great addition with its mineral enriched water. The spring water was really lovely to drink too. Such a quirky place to stay and we got some great photos.

Such a lovely, secluded and unique getaway. Thoroughly enjoyed our two nights at Big Red. Hilary was a very welcoming host and left us to it after explaining a few things. The hot tub was brilliant, especially after hiking from Abergavenny up Sugar Loaf and back! Although secluded, it is within driving distance of numerous places to visit. Would highly recommend.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Big Red! The bus is incredibly comfortable, featuring a spacious and cosy bed, and a well-equipped kitchen and living area. The modern oven and hob are great, and the seating area comfortably fits two. The kitchen is stocked with cooking essentials, including pans, a colander, plates, bowls, cutlery, and even oil, herbs, and seasoning. Theres tea and coffee too, with a cafeteria - though only instant coffee is provided, you need to get coffee granules for this. The large fridge easily accommodates multiple meals and, of course, wine! Outside, there's room for dining and a BBQ. While the hot tub doesn't get extremely hot, it's warm enough to be quite enjoyable. The shower is powerful and heats up quickly, and the outdoor toilet is modern. This experience feels far from camping—everything is clean, updated, and very homey. Hilary is exceptionally friendly and provides thorough guidance throughout your stay.

My grandchildren, wife and myself loved our stay at the big red bus. We didn’t want to leave. Showing the grandchildren some basic skills made my stay worthwhile. Lighting a fire in the firepit for our marshmallows, making a swing on the tree and just walking to the shower and toilet in the dark with our torches made the stay awesome.
26/08/2024Mark
It was a great location and the accommodation was very well maintained. Being totally off the grid was just what we need for a few days.
12/08/2024Mike
The Big Red was well setup inside with areas to lounge, dine, cook and a lovely big bed. Outside was a lovely hot tub that we sat and watched the stars. There was also a well looked after shower and toilet. There was lots of wood for the log burner and hot tub and hot running water as well. We had a fantastic time and didn’t end up cold at all in February! Hilary was very hospitable and had got the log burner and hot tub going before we arrived.
26/02/2024Alan
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Big Red. The accommodation was so cool and cosy; the location was beautiful and easy to find; and we felt like we had the facilities and equipment for all of our needs. The hot tub was super! Hilary was very helpful and communicative, she greeted us on arrival to show us how to use the fires. We felt safe and able to reach out if needed. The kitchen and bathroom facilities were well kitted out and we didn’t need anything extra.
12/02/2024Lorian
Better than we imagined! Hilary was lovely and made us feel very welcome. It was clean and cosy and the location was stunning, the pictures don’t do it justice. Because it was so cold the pipes froze over night but Hilary was so helpful and made sure heaters were left in the toilet / shower room to prevent it happening again. I would recommend to anyone, the place has a lot of character and charm and it was a wonderful trip.
17/01/2024Sophie
A fantastic off the grid get away. Hilary was very helpful and we had a wonderful relaxing stay, the bed is really comfortable and the hot tub a great bonus.
01/01/2024Graeme
We had the most wonderful stay at Big Red, it was perfect. The place was just as it looked on the website (actually probably better). The facilities were amazing, everything was spotless and the area was so gorgeous and secluded. Went for two nights and it was so relaxing. Exactly what we needed. Saw so much wildlife and wonderful starry skies.
22/09/2023Grace
We had a really relaxing and peaceful time at Big Red. The views were incredible, we didn’t see anyone for the whole of our stay and it had everything we needed and more!
09/08/2023Daniella
Spent two nights in Big Red and absolutely loved it! The bus is beautifully done with everything you need inside. The location is great with fantastic views and all for a bargain price.
02/08/2023Sophie
We absolutely loved staying in Big Red. The bus was immaculate and had everything we needed and the location and view was heavenly. Hilary was warm and welcoming but then left us to our own devices which was perfect. The super Kingsized bed on the bus was ridiculously comfortable and we were as snug as bugs. Everything was perfectly thought out and we had a beautiful break. We will definitley be back.
02/06/2023Emma
Big red is perfect. Beautiful walks including a stream nearby. The space is big and has everything you need. Hilary is a great and friendly host
29/05/2023Rayne
We had a wonderful relaxing staff at the bus. Hilary was waiting for us on arrival with logs on for the hot tub. Sleeping in the bus had the same feeling of excitement that you had camping out as a child. The bed was so comfortable, and everything you needed was provided. As for the hot tub under the trees, with that amazing view, wow.
17/05/2023Julie
Our stay at Big Red was amazing. We had the best time sitting outside in the sun enjoying the view, getting in and out of the hot tub, reading and enjoying the bus and it’s beautiful interior. Hilary was very helpful explaining the hot tub and how everything works at the start, and then we saw no one for our whole stay! It felt like we were on our very own private land. Thank you for a wonderful few days! We can’t recommend enough.
01/05/2023Kelly
The stay was fantastic, Hilary was lovely on arrival and very helpful. The bus is just awesome. Such a cool and unique little stay. Beautiful surroundings, gorgeous hot tub and everything you need on the bus. The bed was also ridiculously comfy!
19/04/2023Enya
This was our second stay at Big Red and it won’t be our last. Both times we booked it for our daughter’s birthday weekend. It’s in such a beautiful location. The bus is incredibly well appointed and the owner has thought of everything you might need for a lovely stay. We received a lovely welcome from Hils on arrival. We had a wonderful weekend around the fire pit, toasting marshmallows and playing games. Big Red is our happy place.
07/04/2023Victoria
It was amazing. Overlooked beautiful landscape, which is viewed from the hot tub. Very cosy bus which has everything you need. Visited nearby Brecon Beacons for a waterfall walk and went down a mine at Big Pit. Great location.
20/03/2023Hannah
Amazing weekend! Big Red is perfectly set up in quiet surroundings so no disturbances. The bus is kitted out well with everything you need and Hilary was super helpful and quick in replying if you needed anything. Would definitely recommend and stay again!
03/02/2023Lucy
We had a wonderful time at Big Red. There are loads of thoughtful touches, the wood fire hot tub was great, and we were super cosy inside with the wood burner (particularly given that it was freezing outside overnight). It's a wonderful place to chill out. Hilary was really helpful and welcoming. We will be back!
18/11/2022Harriet
Two nights in Big Red. Absolutely gorgeous inside and very clean. Hilary the owner was lovely and couldn’t be more helpful. Hot tub was great to be in at night and then to come inside to a warm fire. Toilet and shower room spotless, well lit around the area at night if you needed to go to the loo in the night. Our 3yr old thought it was brilliant and Loved pretending to drive the bus.
14/11/2022Alison
Was amazing. Really Peaceful and quiet
09/11/2022Jess
Super, friendly host who was very helpful! Decor inside bus was cosy and inviting! The extra touch of the Happy Birthday banner was much appreciated! The bus, shower and toilet block were spotless. Hot tub was very relaxing with lovely views!

We had an amazing time and everything about the place was great. I can't fault anything.
28/10/2022Chloe
Big Red is delightful. It’s quirky and cute and comfortable.
26/10/2022Sarah
This was a surprise stay for my husbands 40th birthday and it was perfect! Hilary was there to greet us when we arrived and showed us around with explanations of how everything worked and then left us to enjoy the time while ensuring she was available should we have any questions. We enjoyed an amazing lot peaceful weekend at Big Red which was epic in itself! Though very rustic looking, everything has been done to such a high standard and all with so much thought. The Scandinavian hot tub was hands on (which hubby loved!) and worked so well in the surroundings. The shower and toilet, again, was to such a high standard and spotless. The products provided were fabulous! All smelt Devine and knowing they were eco was even better. Needless to say I have already ordered bottles for home! Thank you so much Hilary and Big Red for a wonderful time, I am already missing that bed that was so comfortable and snuggly!
21/10/2022Harriet
From the moment we arrived my head felt calmer. A stunning spot overlooking the Welsh mountains, buzzards flying overhead, bats and owls to keep you company in the evening. The bus was superbly equipped, the beds super comfy. It was surprisingly warm on board as well. The toilet/shower facilities were great. The hot tub was delightful in the evenings, with the glow of the lights making it very atmospheric. I wouldn't hesitate to return, and Hilary was a fantastic host.
02/09/2022Georgina
Big Red is a gorgeous hideaway in the Welsh countryside. Providing modern comforts in a compact and ingenious way makes for a quiet place to relax and reconnect. The hot tub is a lovely touch and it is a short drive to local pubs, farm shops and experiences. We enjoyed watching the sunset each evening, playing forgotten card games and waking up to the birds every morning.
31/08/2022H
Big Red is such a gorgeous, well renovated space with lots of cool features on the bus. My kids totally loved stayed on the bus, pretend to be a bus driver and dancing in the kitchen area & playing games! Super king sized bed is so comfy and huge, perfect for good night's sleep. Loved every quirky details on the bus and cleanliness, very thoughtful amenities like all of your basic essentials for cooking. Hot tub with the view was such a treat, you can just relax and watch the sun go down in the hot tub with your favourite drink. Hils' been so amazing & welcoming too, thanks so much!
28/08/2022Kelly
We had an incredible time, it was so private, we truly felt like we were the only people around. Beautiful views and the facilities were just perfect. Big Red was fun and had everything you needed.
26/08/2022Alice
Big Red was the perfect setting to unwind in, with stunning views, no noise and excellent facilities. Big Red itself was incredibly spacious, with plenty of room to cook and play games, whilst the bed was simply vast! Having the hot-tub available was a massive bonus, whilst everything from the sun-loungers to the picnic table to the toilet and shower made for an incredibly easygoing weekend. The location itself was the perfect base from which to explore the Wye Valley, with the likes of Monmouth, Symonds Yat and Tintern no more than a 20-25 minute drive away. As for Hilary she was the perfect host, kindly offering to get the hot-tub warmed up for our arrival, and simply letting us get on with enjoying the weekend. Would thoroughly recommend to anyone else!
05/08/2022Robin
Absolutely amazing stay. Hilary was so welcoming and the big red was unique and beautiful. The views the hot tub bbq and fire pit at night looking up at the stars so peaceful the place was magical. Suprise birthday gift for the fella went down a treat. Loved every minute of our stay!
13/07/2022Danielle
Our stay at Big Red was perfect, Hils was v friendly, helpful and accessible for questions while still giving us our own space. Even from before we got there we had loads of recommendations of pubs and walks in the area. The bus itself was done to a very high standard, and upsettingly that bed is more comfortable than our one at home, making it very hard to get up and go for a hike! We'd definitely be back, listening to the rain on the metal roof of the cabin with a book and a brew was bliss. Thanks for creating such an idyllic hide away
27/06/2022Erin
We stayed at Big Red for two nights with our two year old daughter and as soon as we arrived we wish we’d booked more!! The surroundings are wild and beautiful, with so much nature to explore and wildlife to find. Lots of bats flying in the trees at night! There’s a beautiful stream and acres of woodland/meadows to walk through. The bus itself is fantastic with loads of little quirky features and everything you might need including cutlery, cookware, an oven, playing cards, blankets, towels.. the list goes on. There’s a nice focus on the environment with really easy to use recycling bins and all eco products by Miniml and Splosh! which all smelt delicious! The hot tub was of course amazing and so toasty! And the separate shower and toilet are beautifully finished. All of our skin feels amazing from washing in the local water from the spring. The bus was a massive hit with our daughter Make sure you sit on the sun loungers on the hill at sunset! You won’t want to miss it! Hilary was perfect and so welcoming and was on hand if we had any questions at all. Book now, you won’t want to miss out on this little slice of wild and calm.

We - two adults and two children - stayed two nights at Big Red - and had an excellent time. The kids agree that the highlight was the wood-fired hot tub - we liked the novelty of the bus, and found the accommodation really comfortable, quiet and great for a relaxing weekend.

We had an amazing stay, Hilary had the luv tub stoked up ready for arrival, which was a nice touch. She greeted us showed us how to use the fire on the luv tub. Inside of Big Red was like a home away from home but with beautiful views of the country side and wildlife. We also loved the board games kept us busy and distracted us from our phones.

We arrived and were greeted by Hilary who was lovely. We were immediately blown away by the amazing views. After a quick tour Hilary left us to enjoy our stay. The big red was very comfortable and had everything we could have needed for our stay. The bed was super comfortable and our 3 year old daughter also slept well in the single bed. We spent lots of time taking in the views and just relaxing around the garden area. The hot tub was perfect for the colder afternoon / evenings and some much needed relaxation. The toilet area and shower was very clean with hot running water. There were plenty of towels provided for our stay for use in the shower and hot tub, along with robes. We loved it and will certainly recommend to all of our family and friends

Awesome host ,great accommodation cosy but spacious bus with breath taking views. The host had warmed up the hot tub for our arrival and had fresh baked mince pies on arrival. Shower was lovely and warm . We loved our stay here .

Big Red is a wonderful and unique countryside retreat, yet just 40 minutes from Bristol! The conversion of the old American school bus has been done fantastically, you can see the craftsmanship that has gone into it with wood-panelled interiors but with added luxuries like a diesel heater keeping it warm all day and a king-sized bed at the back! It feels spacious yet cosy and the windows on all sides make you feel connected to nature!

It was a great location and the accommodation was very well maintained. Being totally off the grid was just what we need for a few days.

A fantastic off the grid get away. Hilary was very helpful and we had a wonderful relaxing stay, the bed is really comfortable and the hot tub a great bonus.

We had a really relaxing and peaceful time at Big Red. The views were incredible, we didn’t see anyone for the whole of our stay and it had everything we needed and more!

Spent two nights in Big Red and absolutely loved it! The bus is beautifully done with everything you need inside. The location is great with fantastic views and all for a bargain price.

Big red is perfect. Beautiful walks including a stream nearby. The space is big and has everything you need. Hilary is a great and friendly host

Amazing weekend! Big Red is perfectly set up in quiet surroundings so no disturbances. The bus is kitted out well with everything you need and Hilary was super helpful and quick in replying if you needed anything. Would definitely recommend and stay again!

Absolutely amazing stay. Hilary was so welcoming and the big red was unique and beautiful. The views the hot tub bbq and fire pit at night looking up at the stars so peaceful the place was magical. Suprise birthday gift for the fella went down a treat. Loved every minute of our stay!
