Overview
At the heart of The Hop Garden at Kingstone Brewery sits Pioneer the hardy converted horsebox. During the winter months warmth won’t be a problem, with the cosy bed up a ladder above the cab, the wood-burner crackling in the corner and Kingstone Brewery on hand to supply you with that special inner glow. As part of a constantly evolving site, you’ll spot the greenhouses on the way in, still being fashioned for purpose. Keen to leave the area to rewild, owners Ed and Tori are busy running the brewery, and home schooling six kids respectively – so if nowhere to be found, send them a text with any queries. The beer is Ed’s domain and if you can find him, he’ll can show you round and talk you through the art of brewing. Ask about the brewery shop too, where you can also pick up ales, cider and local wines; or just meet the other connoisseurs staying on the property.
Getting out into the Wye Valley and the depths of the Forest of Dean, or visiting the ruins of Tintern Abbey and Chepstow Castle can help you work up a thirst. If the weather is holding you can take to the river by canoe, idling round the gentle curves to waterfront pubs like the Saracen’s Head or the Inn on the Wye.

I had a really blissful two nights here, just on a solo trip to unwind. The cabin was cosy and I loved the wood-fired hot tub. The whole trip was so peaceful and I loved that Tintern and other lovely places were so near by. Lots of great pubs as well — my favourite meal was at The Bear Inn in Usk, and I enjoyed the Boat Inn in Penalt too.

Pioneer was a cosy hideaway from Storm Bert! The well-sized wood-fired hot tub was a lovely place to spend the pre-storm evening, the bed was very comfortable and the horse box contained everything we needed for our long weekend of cooking. It's definitely a place to visit if you want to feel relaxed and calm. We're already planning a return trip for the spring so that we can make the most of the wonderful outdoor space!

A truly cosy weekend! Spent a couple of days with a friend to escape the city, everything is so well thought out, the space is bigger than we expected and more than comfortable for 2. There were beers and chocolate truffles on arrival which were very gratefully received and each cabin / horse box has it's own private and big outdoor space. Our stay also coincided with one of the brewery's pizza nights which we absolutely loved and I was thrilled to find they had a vegan option on the menu! Would really recommend staying here, right next door to the offa's dyke trail, there's a super friendly robin to eat breakfast with and all the extra blankets and hot water bottles you could need if the weather gets rough :)
15/11/2024Aileen
Lovely weekend, great location, nice to have long walks in nature, just relaxing away from it all.
08/11/2024Rebecca
Lovely stay in Pioneer, the converted horse box in it's own private garden. Great accommodation with hot tub in a lovely location.
19/08/2024Andrew
We had a wonderful chilled-out weekend break in Pioneer nestled in a quiet corner of the brewery grounds, we could have been in the middle of nowhere! The horsebox had everything we needed & was very cosy - ideal for a quirky, quiet getaway. We spent a lovely day bimbling around Tintern, taking in the Abbey ruins, cakes & coffee at the Filling Station Cafe, a couple of pints of Ed's wonderful beer at the Rose & Crown (I was hooked after sampling the generously provided welcome beers left for us when we arrived at Pioneer) & a lazy walk back along the river. We spent the evening relaxing in the hot tub & sat on the covered porch with a few drinks enjoying the sights & sounds of the nature surrounding us... along with the horses in the paddock just beyond Pioneer's little wooded oasis - & munching on the delicious local Wild Boar sausages we'd found in Abbey Stores earlier that day. We also indulged in breakfast at the charming Old Station Cafe (just opposite the Brewery site) after we checked out. A thoroughly wonderful stay, communication from Ed was great and we were simply left to enjoy the peace & tranquility of Pioneer. I would highly recommend a stay at the Hop Garden.

Stay was lovely. Just about enough space for two people but was all we needed. Location was nice and isolated and not too far a walk away from where our car was parked. Space was clean inside and had some necessary supplies for cooking. Ed was good at communicating by text / phone call when we got a bit confused where our site was. Cabin was nice and warm with an electric heater and the hot water was instant and consistent. Hot tub was lovely and easy to use. All space inside was utilised with more storage space than I expected.
26/02/2024Sydney
We had a fabulous 2-night stay at the pioneer (a converted horse box). It gave us everything we needed with the most comfortable bed, a great shower and kitchen facilities. We didn’t get a chance to use the hot tub but it means we will have to go back!
16/02/2024Demi
Utterly brilliant before-during and all else in between. Ideal place to just 'be' and adored the way it was even better than the photos. Hosts were totally amazing and attentive and caring throughout. Stayed on my own and felt completely in good hands and enjoyed the solitude in safety.
21/01/2024Ruby
It was a unique stay surrounded by greenery. It was very cosy once the fire got going and we had all the essentials we needed from the list provided and also stuff they had already stocked up for us. There was board games and a hot tub as well as lots of fun activities and places to visit nearby.
04/12/2023Molly
Beautiful location right in the Wye Valley. Warm and cosy in the converted horse truck with great facilities. Lovely, welcoming hosts who left us to it but were only a phone call away for anything we needed. The outside area was lush!
25/11/2023Kayla
It was absolutely wonderful, the horse box was so cute and quirky. My husband and I were looking for peace and quiet away from it all and this certainly ticked all the boxes. Even though the weather was dreadful, we still enjoyed the hot tub and the covered balcony area was where we spent out evenings, enjoying a glass of wine and the silence.
10/07/2023Samantha
Wonderful. Turned off my phone and read books on trees. Pioneer was exactly as shown in the photos. Super comfy mattress and birdsong. Exactly what we needed
27/06/2023Emily
We had a lovely stay in Pioneer. It was really cosy and comfortable in the horsebox and we used the fire pit outside on one night so we could look at the stars. Edward was really helpful and was able to sort out an issues we had. It is set in the beautiful Wye valley and we could see buzzards, blue tits and a woodpecker from our window!
27/01/2023Ella
We loved the Pioneer, very quirky and cosy with everything we needed
18/11/2022Nadine
Amazing little horsebox and perfect, out the way set in some woods so peaceful and quiet, a short walk into tintern and local pubs
24/08/2022Neil
We stayed for 3 nights as it was an area we didn’t know very well and wanted to canoe, visit Symonds Yat and visit some of the local market towns. Loved the wagon, great location for beautiful walks and getting to the surrounding area. Cooked on the fire pit one evening in the rain which was still a lot of fun! Very cosy inside and surprisingly roomy with great kitchen facilities!
15/08/2022Charlie
We had the most wonderful anniversary weekend at Pioneer. Arriving from London on a boiling hot day and in lots of summer traffic; the Kingstone Brewery ales were a wonderful touch! We had perfect blue sky days, and the green canopy of trees gave us beautiful shade and coolness from the heatwave. We loved being able to cook and eat outdoors - the barbecue A-frame grid was great! The interior of Pioneer has been carefully, and thoughtfully planned out. It is cosy and welcoming, and has everything you need. A lovely touch is the trivia games left for guests to enjoy, and we spent our evenings quizzing each other with some after-dinner riddles. We felt like nature’s guests and observed (and heard) beautiful birdlife. It was the perfect city break. The nearby village of Tintern is charming, and the Wye Valley won us over immediately. We would definitely return.
12/08/2022Lucia
Had a great weekend in Pioneer. Lovely sitting around the fire pit each evening, & beautiful walk along Offa's Dyke path to have a pint & chips at the pub in St.Briavel's. Ed very friendly, & scenery was stunning!
27/05/2022Elaine
Amazing stay. Quiet, relaxing environment. Accommodation had everything we needed. Warm and cosy, bed was really comfortable and kitchen was very well equipped.
19/02/2022Gemma
We absolutely loved Pioneer! The bunkbed was surprisingly cosy and we loved the wood-burner and played cards late into the night. The surrounding area is stunning, Tintern was gorgeous, we visited the abbey and went to the pub. We walked up to the Devils Pulpit and also walked by Symonds Yat which has wonderful views in the sunshine. We loved our stay and wished we could have been there longer! The beers were ace and we also went to Parva Vineyard 500 yards down the road for a tasting. One small thing to note the shower never gets very hot which wouldn't be an issue in the summer but in November it was rather bracing getting into the shower in the morning. I'd recommend showering only when you've got the wood-burner going in the horse-box. Absolutely loved our stay though and would love to come back!
26/11/2021Clarice
Location was lovely and very easy to find. The pioneer itself was very clean and homely. The bed was very comfortable. It was also incredibly peaceful. The owners were friendly and welcoming.
23/07/2021Lewis
We had a great time, lovely walks into tintern, canoeing and swimming in the wye.
02/07/2021Christina
The location, stunning surrounding, secluded, very original
22/06/2021Arianna
It was a lovely and unique stay for my husband and I. We really enjoyed the barbecue facility, sauces and welcome beers provided to us. We loved the location it was at and the activities available to us as well. We were there for 3 days 2 nights over the bank holiday weekend and I specifically booked a stay in the brewery because I wanted my husband to be able to have beer whenever he wants but unfortunately the brewery was not open throughout our entire stay. It might have been my fault for not confirming prior, but I did send a message to the owners with a question and also telling them that I’m excited for the brewery experience - but didn’t get a response from them. Apart from that though, everything else was lovely
29/05/2021S
It was magical. Waking up hearing the birds sing and falling asleep to the owls hoot was incredible. We went canoeing and came across deer, ducklings, swans and so many different types of birds. The views were gorgeous, everywhere we looked there were pools of bluebells, flowing down the woodlands. And to come back to the cabin, light the fire and have a couple of complimentary beers from the Kingston's brewery ( located on sight) was heaven.
07/05/2021Millie
We stayed for two nights at the end of April and absolutely loved it. The log burner made the place so cosy and we were able to cook a full roast one night in the little kitchen. The owners are so lovely and the beer is delicious, not to mention the environment is stunning. It feels like the a beautiful peaceful corner of the world. Two things that surprised us about Pioneer was the bed was extremely comfortable and the shower unexpectedly good. We had such a nice time just camping by the fire, playing boardgames provided and drinking a local red wine from the vineyard down the road.
25/04/2021Annabelle
Our stay in the converted horse box called the Pioneer was truly idyllic. We arrived to a warm, clean and cosy place with two ales ready to drink. Very easy to find with clear instructions on how to find it. Everything was very well thought out, nothing has been missed. The host were attentive if we needed anything, very friendly like we were speaking to old friends.

Spent a stormy March weekend here with my boyfriend. Such a cosy cabin in a great location - easy walking distance to Tintern where there are lots of great pubs and tea rooms. We were lucky enough to be there for the wood fired pizza night (first Saturday of the month) - the pizzas were delicious! Would recommend for a mini-break escape
06/03/2020Bethany
A great little shelter from a stormy weekend. Nice touches such as books and games to stay busy during the rain. Also the ale from the brewery was fantastic
14/02/2020Emma
Wonderful! Very relaxing, beautiful setting, a really cosy, restorative holiday.
27/12/2019Emily
We arrived for the weekend to celebrate my boyfriend’s birthday. We spent Friday to Sunday in the horse box, and loved it. We went out for dinner to one of the pubs with an amazing view on the Friday night and on Saturday we did our first ever floatation at Float in the Forest, which was nearby in the Forest of Dean. That was a unique experience and I would highly recommend it! We then had something to eat and found the nicest cafe I think I’ve ever been to, where we played scrabble and had brunch. In the afternoon my boyfriend did the tasting at the brewery where pioneer is and he loved it. The ales are amazing and I bought him a box of 12 to bring back with us. Saturday night we stayed in to make the most of our accommodation and we had pizza and played games in front of the log burner. Then on Sunday we went back to our favourite case before driving home. It was a lovely weekend! I always take my boyfriend away for the weekend of his birthday to somewhere unique using the canopy and stars website... it’s become a tradition now!!!

Fab weekend in Pioneer, the space is amazing and has everything you could need! Brewery on site also added to the whole weekend, making sure you catch the pizza night is also worthwhile! Weather wasn’t brilliant but the horsebox was so amazing we didn’t mind much!

We stayed at Pioneer for our anniversary weekend and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. It was our first experience with canopy and stars and it was more than we hoped.

Lovely stay at pioneer. The weather was fab and the horsebox itself was wonderful. Beers in the sunshine and coffee in bed listening to the birds. Would highly recommend!

We enjoyed two wonderful days in Pioneer at the Hop Garden. We had everything we needed in our cosy converted horse box, with a log fire to keep the cold at bay! Despite it being late December, we were still able to enjoy time on the outside seating area, where we watched the birds over glasses of beer. Pioneer had everything we needed including shower and toilet, and full oven. Emma made sure we had everything we needed and was hand to answer any questions. We’ll definitely be back!!

Was really lovely, if a very short two nights. Had (almost) everything we needed and when we didn’t Ed and Tori were very helpful.

Very pleasant and relaxing time away from the city. Secluded location, yet near to some quaint villages for an afternoon pint.

We're super excited to be adding Ed and Tori's latest space. A wonderful addition to the collection. The feedback for Goldings should give you a good feel for what it will be like. Book a stay and be the first to write a review!

My boyfriend and I stayed at Pioneer for Valentine’s weekend. It was a beautiful site with no one around so we could enjoy the quiet. Inside was so cosy and warm, and outside we could light fires and relax under the stars. The location was ideal as we could get out easily in the car to go on walks and explore the surrounding areas, mainly the forest of Dean but we ventured further afield too!

Lovely weekend, great location, nice to have long walks in nature, just relaxing away from it all.

Lovely stay in Pioneer, the converted horse box in it's own private garden. Great accommodation with hot tub in a lovely location.

We had a fabulous 2-night stay at the pioneer (a converted horse box). It gave us everything we needed with the most comfortable bed, a great shower and kitchen facilities. We didn’t get a chance to use the hot tub but it means we will have to go back!

Utterly brilliant before-during and all else in between. Ideal place to just 'be' and adored the way it was even better than the photos. Hosts were totally amazing and attentive and caring throughout. Stayed on my own and felt completely in good hands and enjoyed the solitude in safety.

It was a unique stay surrounded by greenery. It was very cosy once the fire got going and we had all the essentials we needed from the list provided and also stuff they had already stocked up for us. There was board games and a hot tub as well as lots of fun activities and places to visit nearby.

Beautiful location right in the Wye Valley. Warm and cosy in the converted horse truck with great facilities. Lovely, welcoming hosts who left us to it but were only a phone call away for anything we needed. The outside area was lush!

Wonderful. Turned off my phone and read books on trees. Pioneer was exactly as shown in the photos. Super comfy mattress and birdsong. Exactly what we needed

Amazing little horsebox and perfect, out the way set in some woods so peaceful and quiet, a short walk into tintern and local pubs

Had a great weekend in Pioneer. Lovely sitting around the fire pit each evening, & beautiful walk along Offa's Dyke path to have a pint & chips at the pub in St.Briavel's. Ed very friendly, & scenery was stunning!

Amazing stay. Quiet, relaxing environment. Accommodation had everything we needed. Warm and cosy, bed was really comfortable and kitchen was very well equipped.

Location was lovely and very easy to find. The pioneer itself was very clean and homely. The bed was very comfortable. It was also incredibly peaceful. The owners were friendly and welcoming.

A great little shelter from a stormy weekend. Nice touches such as books and games to stay busy during the rain. Also the ale from the brewery was fantastic
