Overview
Caban Eric is far more than first meets the eye. The hut itself is a beautiful, airy space with a king-size bed and sofa double, en suite bathroom and modern kitchen all done with an eye for real quality, but there’s much more to discover as you wander across the grass and down the banks of the stream. First you’ll find the outdoor cooking space, with a canopy, campfire and all the tools provided for a bit of wild dining or making the most of your welcome marshmallows and hot chocolate. Next, you pass the swimming pools, dug to 4.5ft deep and stream-fed for chilly dips in the morning or refreshing plunges to take the edge of the afternoon sun. Lastly you find the hammock and the pallet sofa, where you can haul yourself out to dry and debate whose turn it is to make drinks. All of this is surrounded by your own personal woodland, where even the few footpaths nearby run out of sight, so you can ditch the car (and even clothes if you like) and disappear into your own little world.
The only things you might share the woodland with are the birds and beasts. Foxes and badgers might wander past and the partridge are often heard chattering to each other like old men as they mill about in the morning. Should you ever choose to leave the peace of the glade, owners Gaye and John have left plenty of information on their favourite walks and sights. You can hit the Pen Y Cloddau section of the Offa’s Dyke trail on foot from the cabin or explore Moel Fammau Country Park and there’s a satisfyingly hilly 1.5 mile walk to the Cross Foxes in Nannerch, where a log fire and great beer will ease your aching legs. Of course, you may simply want to stock up with great local produce, take a book down to the stream or raid the board games and spend all day barefoot and half-awake in the sunshine. With such a perfect spot all to yourself, who could blame you?

Meet Gaye and John
The family have lived here for 35 years. John, Gaye and John's parents used to run the farm across the road, Gwrych Bedw. When they had their two daughters Molly & Megan, the farm was no longer big enough to sustain both households so John went to work for the local council, where he still works as a footpath officer. Gaye retrained after the children went to school and has since worked as a self-employed gardener in the local area. Gaye had always wanted to build a summerhouse at the end of the field to catch the evening sun. At the beginning of lockdown Gaye, John, Megan & Molly started clearing the space where Caban Eric now stands. It had become very overgrown & inaccessible over the years. Once started, they realized this was the area to catch the evening sun out of the wind, which is often the problem up in the field.
They decided it was such a beautiful space that it would be good to share it with other people especially now after the pandemic. Gaye's father Eric had given them some money, so what was going to be a summerhouse now became a cabin. Eric loved the outdoors & local countryside of the area and even helped Gaye & John when they first started clearing the woods. Sadly Eric passed away before the space was completed but they have named it Caban Eric in his memory.
Wildlife & the environment
It is in an Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the edge of Moel Fammau Country Park and is a mile away by road, from the Coed Llangwyfan car park which is part of the Offa's Dyke National Trail. Access can also be gained onto the Offa's Dyke Trail (Pen Y Cloddau section) directly on footpaths from the site.
The wood is teeming with birdlife including the usual blackbirds, robins, various tits, as well as treecreepers, nuthatches, long-tailed tits, spotted flycatchers, greater spotted woodpeckers & occasional kingfishers. Frequent visitors include pheasants, partridge, grey squirrels & rabbits. The partridge are really funny, early in the morning you can hear them chattering to each other as they walk through, they're like little old men. There are also lots of buzzards and an occasional Red Kite. Foxes and badgers living nearby pass through the property occasionally and you can often see in the mornings where the badgers have been rooting for grubs and worms. There is also a Rookery at the end of the wood.

We had a wonderful, relaxing and well needed break at Caban Eric. It was peaceful and gloriously secluded. Gaye was the perfect welcoming host - on hand to help, but not overbearing. We sat outside for 2 full days, reading and doing jigsaws. Perfect.

Caban Eric was the perfect spot for our family break. It is a stunning location where you can clearly see the love and attention that Gaye and John have put into it. There was space for the kids to safely roam and explore, with tree swings and hammocks to enjoy. We loved the range of cooking options and the whole place was so well equipped. Plenty of walks on the doorstep. The personal touches were wonderful.

We had a really relaxing long weekend at Caban Eric. We felt welcomed and comfortable as soon as we arrived. Gaye and John are wonderful hosts. We enjoyed the tranquility, the opportunity to cook outdoors and being surrounded by greenery.

This is truly a little paradise. All you can hear is running water from the stream alongside the cabin, a huge number of birdsongs and sheep in the surrounding fields. There’s a number of beauty spots in different areas so you can see the sunrise and the sunset. There’s no light pollution so the stars look beautiful into the night. There’s walks straight from the cabin and recommended walks a little further a field in a beautiful area. The owners were so lovely and helpful! They helped me bring my bags down, had loads of recommendations and as I was staying on my own without they offered to bring me back some groceries when they went to the nearest town. I will definitely stay again.

Fabulous few days spent at Caban Eric, beautiful setting with everything you need to make it special. Outdoor cooking, hot shower, plunge pools. Fabulous walks from the hut. Very peaceful and tranquil get away.
06/05/2024Kate
From start to finish it was an absolute delight. Gaye and John are perfect hosts. Directions excellent and sat nav took us straught there. Idyllic location to get away from the hustle and bustle. Caban Eric has everything you need. Lost of outdoor space and 2 plunge pools. Easy accessible walks and nature all around, from lambs in the field to an array of birds. Saw my first woodpecker and had a visit from a fox during the night. It was our anniversary and Gaye and John had made a lovely anniversary sign for us. There was a welcome pack with basic necessities and tea, coffee and cooking essentials all available. Even a vase of wild flowers on the outside table, a lovely touch. Would highly recommend and will most definitely try and return soon.

We had a fantastic time, very relaxing and lovely walks without having to drive anywhere. Very well equipped and comfortable, lots of wildlife and birds everywhere. I haven't seen nuthatch and treecreepers for years and they just visited us while quietly having a coffee. Very well designed for any weather, only suitable for outdoors people but if you want peace and quiet, some time undisturbed as a couple or simply to read and relax then this is perfect. We also appreciated the dipping pool and mini waterfall. If you like cold water as we do simply light the log burner to warm the caban and have a plunge. The hosts are lovely and recommended some local spots we would not have found ourselves. In particular we enjoyed the Holy Well at St Dyfnogs church.

We had a brilliant time staying at Caban Eric, Gaye and John were the perfect hosts. We arrived the weekend of Storm Babet and the journey had been an adventure with closed roads and challenging driving condition. John and Gaye were so kind and came out to meet us, guide us to the Caban and helped us move our bags as well. It was so nice to get the help. We were only there for the weekend but there was so much that we could do. We had a lot of fun on the Saturday night with the pizza oven. The accommodation despite being a smaller property is full of everything that you need and its all of a really high quality and really well put together.
20/10/2023David
We had such a great time. We had been travelling around in our campervan for a month with our baby so the cabin was a very welcome bit of luxury! It had absolutely everything we could need and was in a beautiful location
29/09/2023Becky
We absolutely loved our stay, could not think of a bad word to say if we tried. It was perfect. So cosy, beautiful little touches and fab hosts full of recommendations.
04/08/2023Georgia
This place is simply amazing - best of both worlds! Everything you need for a wild time outside: fire pits, plunge pools, pizza oven, covered areas, hammocks etc. And all the comforts and luxuries you might need inside: large comfy bed, seating area, well equipped kitchen, toiletries and a beautiful hot shower!! Gaye and John really have thought of everything. The location is superb, incredibly peaceful and lovely walks on the doorstep. Definitely one of the best, if not the best, places we’ve stayed in!
28/07/2023John
It was perfect! Gaye and John have created something wonderful and there was so much love and thought gone into every little detail both inside the shepherd’s hut and outside.
12/06/2023Linda

It was truly delightful. So peaceful... we listened to owls at night as we sat around the fire. Everything we needed was there, it was really well equipped and the green space around the cabin was beautiful: river, pond, outdoor kitchen, lovely flowers...
25/07/2022Lisa
Wow, this place blew us away! The photos do not do it justice, it’s incredible.

Absolutely fantastic stay in Caban Eric. Couldn’t have been better. Wonderful log burner. Super cosy. Very friendly owners. Welcome basket was a lovely touch. Plenty of information about local amenities.
18/02/2022Megan
Our stay at Caban Eric was fantastic. Really lovely place nestled in the woods. The Shepherds Hut itself was really well equipped and beautifully designed. Fantastic shower with instant piping hot water. Gaye & John are lovely people and made our stay really special with thoughtful touches. We’d love to return to explore more of the walks and local area.

I chose Caban Eric as a birthday treat for my wife, a couple of nights away from it all in a nice, peaceful area. I thought personally I would miss having no TV or WiFi but the stunning accommodation, location and scenery more than made up for the lack of Sky Sports.
18/11/2021Richard
We had a superb time at Caban Eric, it provided us with the peace and quiet to totally relax. The hut manages to combine a sense of rustic charm and a feeling of truly being in nature, with touches of luxury, that ensured the experience was authentic but not uncomfortable. There was evidence of a great amount of thought having gone in to providing everything that visitors could possibly want or enjoy. Not just the local information, of things to do in the area, but also the equipment that allowed you to engage with, and enjoy, staying on site, with hammocks, fire pits, outside seating areas, swimming pools and privacy, it gave us everything we could possibly have wanted and was lacking in nothing.
29/10/2021Michael
Caban Eric is a perfect peaceful hideaway, John & Gaye are excellent hosts and the cabin has been carefully crafted. Cosy and comfortable with everything you'd need and a little October drizzle didn't dampen our (recharged) spirits. Great to escape for a little while, highly recommended
15/10/2021Lynne
Caban Eric was perfect! from the warm welcome to the wonderfully designed cabin. The natural pool, hammock, swing, multiple BBQs and beautiful landscape all contributed to the perfect birthday surprise for my boyfriend. We were greeted with birthday balloons and welcome signs.
01/10/2021Jade
Second time staying at Caban Eric, very peaceful and relaxing just what we needed. Had a lovely walk in the surounding hills.
27/09/2021Ryan
Firstly, the pictures do not do it justice! Caban Eric was everything we were looking for and more. It is a secluded little cabin surrounds by birds, trees and the sounds of the running stream. Gaye and John could not have done enough to make our stay as comfortable as possible, even down to the finer details such as having fresh eggs, bread and milk waiting for us on our arrival and even having condiments to hand such as tea, coffee, salt, pepper and a fully equipped kitchen. The cabin has been beautifully built and thought through from a spacious (powerful) shower down to the quirky brass light switches. The garden is beautifully well kept and the perfect place to relax and disconnect from the world but also a place to keep the kids entertained down by the stream, on the rope swing, or just exploring in general. Gaye and John provides a gas bbq and several wood fires (plenty of logs) to keep us warm while sitting out star gazing at night time. We could not recommend this place enough to people and will definitely be returning in the future. Thank you again, Gaye, John & Tara (woof) x
06/09/2021Laura
Lovely cabin in a beautiful location.
13/08/2021Sarah
Our stay at Caban Eric was absolutely perfect. The cabin itself is beautiful and beautifully decorated; thoughtful touches everywhere and has everything you need. We've stayed in much worse hotel rooms! The surrounding land is gorgeous; waking up to birdsong, breeze and the sound of the stream is the best, and cooking food (and the marshmallows we were left!) was the best way to end our first night. Gaye, John and Tara the dog were lovely too, very friendly and full of good advice for walks and places to visit while still giving you all your space and privacy. Their red folder of tips and tricks is spot on. We will definitely return!
26/07/2021Jen
Some places are just special and this is one of them. From the secluded setting that makes you feel you e escaped to the high end bespoke and unique finish of the accommodation, the range of amenities (bbq, fire pit, plunge pools, hammocks, bat and ball various reading and picnic areas) and the warmth of the welcome from the owners. We had an amazing time and left feeling rested, recharged and nourished
16/07/2021Joseph
Just lovely. We needed a break from technology and the hustle and bustle of daily life. Peace and rest were on the agenda and a place where we could just be and enjoy nature. Caban Eric ticked all the boxes and so much thought had obviously gone into the hut and surroundings. Just magical. Thank you Gaye and John for creating this haven and letting us share it. ❤
05/07/2021Carol
The perfect getaway! Secluded, peaceful and beautiful all round. We stayed just 2 night but would’ve loved to stay longer. We would definetly recommend this place to anyone who wants to get off grid. There are so many lovely walks, and a couple of nice pubs does just the trick. Gaye was really helpful and friendly. The cabin itself is gorgeous, everything I imagined. Swimming pods are brill too!
30/06/2021Izzy
We had a 5 day stay at Caban Eric and it is fabulous. John and Gaye are wonderful hosts, the cabin itself is amazing and contains everything you need for a lovely relaxing holiday. It's a great place to be indoors, but it really comes into its own when you are outside - peaceful, only animals for company, properly "away-from-it-all" space. Loved it and have already booked to go back again!!
21/06/2021John
The site is in a small hollow with a shepherd's hut and two small wild swimming pools. It is very secluded and quiet. There are very good facilities at the site.
14/06/2021David
Caban Eric is a wonderful and cosy space to totally relax and disconnect from the everyday. We spent our evening relaxing in the hammock with the sounds of the stream and birds, snuggling up by the log burner and having a delicious meal at the lovely local pub The Cross Foxes. Gaye and John have put so much love and attention into the Caban and the whole setting feels so peaceful and secluded. The amount of outdoor space is a real treat from living in a city and you are totally spoilt for choices to hang out, from the outdoor camp kitchen to the pond area with pallet sofa. Gaye and John are a huge fountain of knowledge for the local area so be sure to ask them for advice on the best spots for walking and mountain biking! We came away feeling completely refreshed after our stay and would highly recommend to anyone needing a rejuvenating break in nature.

We had such a great time. We had been travelling around in our campervan for a month with our baby so the cabin was a very welcome bit of luxury! It had absolutely everything we could need and was in a beautiful location

We absolutely loved our stay, could not think of a bad word to say if we tried. It was perfect. So cosy, beautiful little touches and fab hosts full of recommendations.

It was perfect! Gaye and John have created something wonderful and there was so much love and thought gone into every little detail both inside the shepherd’s hut and outside.

It was truly delightful. So peaceful... we listened to owls at night as we sat around the fire. Everything we needed was there, it was really well equipped and the green space around the cabin was beautiful: river, pond, outdoor kitchen, lovely flowers...

Second time staying at Caban Eric, very peaceful and relaxing just what we needed. Had a lovely walk in the surounding hills.

Lovely cabin in a beautiful location.

The site is in a small hollow with a shepherd's hut and two small wild swimming pools. It is very secluded and quiet. There are very good facilities at the site.
