Overview
Perched on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, just east of the Forest of Bowland AONB you’ll find The Quarryman’s Bothy at the end of a rugged drive (very rugged – you’ll need to walk it) that goes nowhere but the bothy. It feels like a world unto itself, with the sprawling hills stretching out into the distance, the patches of pine forest and the animals that graze on the sandy green moorland, it sits a mile and a half from the nearest building.
From outside the bothy, you see its history, the stonework and slate roof that stood when the space was still the site manager’s office to the Hunterbark Quarry. 100 years have passed, and the stone and slate remain unchanged, but the interior’s a world apart. Inside, it’s the perfect contrast to the wild outdoors, a toasty wood burner to snuggle on the sofa by, a luxurious walk-in shower, stone basin and toilet in a separate cubicle. The kitchen’s well equipped, with one gas burner hob and an electric fridge – all beyond a quarryman’s dreams. But the biggest change is outside. What’s known as ‘dynamite corner’ where the explosives were kept, now hosts the wood-fired hot tub – sheltered in a small stone cove outside.
Six or so miles away, you’ll find the incredible Malham Cove, a huge stone formation that juts out into the sky, and was used as a filming location for Harry Potter (that’s why it looks familiar). There are the national parks, AONBs, hikes, and mountain biking routes – more than you could need. But the real magic will be found back at the space, with the sprawling wild to explore by day, and majesty of the starry dark skies by night.

Getting there
Green Gate Lane, Long Preston, BD23 4HW
Please follow the written directions below. These will lead you to a secure and clearly signed parking spot which is a 10 minute walk to the bothy. There is an unsurfaced gravel access road, which is unsuitable for low riding sports cars (standard vehicles are fine).
By public transport:
The Quarryman's Bothy is situated 2 miles (a 40 minute uphill walk) from Settle Train station on the Leeds - Carlisle line, or alternatively disembark at Long Preston for a 2.3 mile walk (still uphill!) on the Leeds - Morecambe or Carlisle lines.
By Car:
do NOT enter from Settle as it will take you via an off road track and you risk getting stuck
Due to the remote location of the bothy, using a postcode will only get you so far, we recommend you use the postcode BD234HW to bring you to ‘Green Gate Lane’ in a village called Long Preston, and from here, then use the What3Words reference ///inversion.couple.remarried to take you the remaining 2 miles to the clearly signed parking spot (which is the nearest car parking option, requiring a 10 minute walk to the bothy).
The What3Words reference will direct you to continue up Green Gate Lane and proceed up the moor along the tarmac road (Edge Lane) until the tarmac runs out and the road turns into a gravel access track (the route of the Pennine Bridleway).
Continue straight (do not turn off at any point) and you will reach a stone barn on the right-hand side, followed by two metal gates, one signed ‘QB PARKING” – use the code provided after booking to unlock this gate and park in the designated space.
Please note that vehicle access is via an unsurfaced gravel access road for the final half-a-mile, which is unsuitable for low riding sports cars (standard vehicles are fine!) – please contact us to discuss if you anticipate there being any issues.
We ask that you use the lock to secure the parking space each time you vacate it, in order that it remains for guest use only.
Now, use the What3words reference: ///pedicure.division.retrieves
A wheeled trolley is provided within the parking space to assist you with the transportation of your luggage and supplies the remaining 800m (0.5 mile) to the bothy via a gravel track. Turn right out of the parking space and continue along the bridleway, look out for a wooden ‘QB à’ sign to you right, indicating you should take the right hand track when you reach a fork in the road, this will lead you to set of double metal gates with a single access gate to the left, signed ‘QB – No public access’ for which the code is the same as the code provided.
Please again ensure that the gate is closed and locked behind you for the security of our land and livestock.
Once through this gate, turn left onto the grass above the gravel track (please do not use the track as there may be cows in the field on the other side of the wire fence) and continue until you see the bothy. You will see a single wooden gate providing access into the fenced quarry area where The Quarryman’s Bothy resides.
The key safe is located on the left-hand side of the door, please refer to welcome email from owners (or C&S booking confirmation) for key code.

Meet your hosts
Meet James and Amy
James and Amy both grew up in the Yorkshire Dales and now live back in Long Preston, the village they both went to school in, with their children. In 2020, during the coronavirus pandemic, James took the opportunity to leave his career of 20 years in the aerospace industry and buy some land near to the village to pursue his lifelong dream of restarting the family sheep farming business, continuing the work of his grandfather. The land was wild, remote and unforgiving, and perched upon the top of it was the ruin of the old Quarryman's Office.
Amy instantly fell in love with the beauty of the location and the potential of the site and work began to gain permission to bring the building back to life. 2.5 years later, the bothy was finished and has offered a diversified income stream for the farm and also a place for the family to look after their little patch of wilderness from.
Wildlife & environment
In the nearby fields, you will see Herdwick sheep, Swaledale sheep and Belted Galloway Cattle, as well as wild animals including deer and bird life including birds of prey, curlew lapwing and snipe.
The bothy is off grid and powered by solar, situated within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, which is also a 'dark skies' certified area of Great Britain.
James and Amy are also proudly involved in woodland planting on surrounding farmland with over 8000 new trees planted within the last 4 years.

We wanted off grid, away from it all and The Quarryman's Bothy delivered it all. The adventure of getting there and the splendid isolation was a real treat to ourselves for our 25th Wedding Anniversary. We walked for miles, spent time talking, sat and read books in front of the fire and even had a game of scrabble, all the things normal life gets too busy to do. The bed was cosy, the shower had plenty of hot water and the welcome goodies were yummy. James and Amy have created a beautiful hideaway with a large sprinkling of luxury. Thanks for the memories xx

Absolutely amazing stay at Quarryman's Bothy - all had been thought about from the sheepskin covers for the chairs outside to the amazingly comfy bed. We had such a good stay
16/09/2024Edward
Our stay at QB was wonderful, we enjoyed the space and the views, watching the weather change across the landscape. Not only did we have the pleasure of goats, cows and ducks for neighbours, we spotted a herd of deer, a barn owl, meadow pitpit, buzzards, swallows and more. There are so many beautiful walks surrounding QB we were spoilt for choice. The Bothy has been beautifully restored and offers a perfect remote getaway to rest and recharge.
12/08/2024Jo
Loved the location, the remoteness. Lots to see and do with walks from the door or a short car distance. The bothy was superb with a great shower and fridge! Best yet! Eating outside was lovely and easy on a warm sunny night watching the sunset.Equally enjoyable was relaxing in front of the fire reading a good book on the cosy sofa after a 16 mile hike.
08/07/2024Beth
It was fantastic! Our hosts provided a beautiful welcome pack, sent all the information we needed way in advance and were incredibly responsive and helpful. The location was beautiful and more than we expected.
05/07/2024Hannah
Wonderful place to stay, lovely welcome pack and the Bothy was absolutely fantastic! Very remote which we loved, walked ourselves into the ground!
08/04/2024Paddy
This was the perfect antidote to busy city & work life. No neighbours (no people!), no cars, no sirens - absolute bliss! The bothy has been beautifully restored to a very high standard and it's clear the owners have spent a lot of time and effort on it. It's the definition of the word 'cosy' and has everything you could need for an escape from the rat race. I had 2 wonderful days hiking the hills round Settle followed by putting my feet up in front of the wood-burner with a drink and a book. Magical. I can see why it's booked up for the next 5 months!
13/10/2023Andy
The stay was absolutely amazing, the scenery and total remoteness was exactly what we needed. Whether the evening was spent in front of the fire, around the bbq or in the hot tub it was a perfect way to spend our time. Lovely little touches by the hosts make you feel welcome.
29/09/2023Jack
We stayed here for our second wedding anniversary and we loved it! We never like to go to the same place twice but we'd go back to the Bothy in a heartbeat.
15/09/2023Kirstie
Oh wow! I'll start by saying, 'We will be back!' We stayed here for three nights on our honeymoon. We could have stayed much longer. The instructions to find the parking and then the bothy were perfectly clear. It was lovely to find a welcome pack of food, and a card and bottle of bubbly to celebrate our wedding with. I only wish we'd spotted the marshmallows before we were packing up to leave! The location is sublime, we sat in the hot tub at dawn and dusk watching kestrels swooping over the site, and the sun rising and setting. Our only neighbours were sheep and cattle. Our stay was the perfect antidote to all the planning for our wedding. It is the perfect place to stay if you want absolute peace with no human neighbours, no shared facilities. The Yorkshire Dales are absolutely stunning too! We'd love to return in the wilds of winter too!
04/09/2023Helen
The Bothy is a wonderful design with a great set up and facilities. Everything has been made to a very high standard and finished really nicely. The bothy inside and out along with the hot tub was clean and easy to use. The views are amazing and with lots of local walks, bike trails etc you have the choice to venture out or just relax in the hills. Thank you for a lovely stay!
31/07/2023Chloe
The owners have done a fantastic job converting this bothy to feel cosy and rustic yet still luxurious and modern. The location and remoteness is just perfect, What better way to end a day of exploring Yorkshire than drinking wine by the firepit with the sun fading over the moors, jumping into the wood-fired hot tub watching the stars begin to peek through the clouds, then cuddling up in front of the cosy bothy fire with a glass of whisky and a board game. An incredibly romantic weekend away from the stress of everyday life, we found it pretty hard to leave!
28/07/2023Prue
We had a great 3 night stay at the Quarryman’s Bothy. It was a great off the grid experience and an opportunity to relax surrounded by nature. The weather wasn’t great but the cosy log burner and hot tub ensured we stayed nice and snug.
14/07/2023Rebecca
A beautiful little place. Perfectly furnished for both relaxing indoors and outdoors.
10/07/2023Lucy
This bothy is the perfect remote getaway, beautifully positioned between the Yorkshire Dales and Forest of Bowland for exploring, though we found it hard to stray too far from the bothy! We loved that the bothy was sustainably designed to be off-grid, but that it still felt like a luxurious break. We spent hours snuggled by the woodburner and in the hot-tub looking at the stars, as well as lazy mornings in the comfy bed reading. We also ventured out on-foot to explore Settle, and grab some local supplies for dinner, which was less than an hour walk from the bothy. Fantastic place for a comfortable off-grid getaway in Yorkshire!

We had the most wonderful time at The Quarryman's bothy. Beautiful location, great facilities and the owners were really quick and helpful when we needed their help. The location is right by the Settle loop so as walkers this was great for being able to start our walk from the front door.

We had a great 3 night stay at the Quarryman’s Bothy. It was a great off the grid experience and an opportunity to relax surrounded by nature. The weather wasn’t great but the cosy log burner and hot tub ensured we stayed nice and snug.

A beautiful little place. Perfectly furnished for both relaxing indoors and outdoors.
