Overview
This is the perfect place to reconnect with the natural world. The Straw Roundhouse is found 250 metres from any building, surrounded by trees and hedgerow in a world of its own. The Straw Roundhouse isn’t just built into its environment, it’s made from it. The walls are plastered in the clay dug from its foundations, creating naturally breathable walls, helping to create an environment that, just, feels, right.
When you’re not marvelling at design, like the spiralling beams that ascend to the skylight or melting into a puddle of calm on the sofa with a movie on the projector screen – you’ll be outside exploring.
Find the ponds dotted about the farm, wander down the canal to watch the birds congregate, or simply listen to fire crackle round the firepit outside. The farm The Straw Roundhouse sits on was converted to organic in 2006, and the owners have been rewilding large swathes of the land, letting it naturally readjust – setting the scene for an escape into nature.
If you manage to pull yourself away from this space, there’s a farm shop seven minutes’ drive away to pick up supplies back in your large kitchen area. Or, if cooking feels like far too much effort, take the 20-minute wander over to the White Lion for a spot of food, and a glass of something special.

Follow the driveway passing Old Leasowe Farm house and their large green shipping container on your right and then past two houses on your left as you go around a tight right hand corner. When you go past the second house swing round to the left below their garden avoiding driving onto the gravel in front of the barn conversion in front of you. Follow the signs and do not turn left or right at the cross roads but continue straight down the track with the orchard on your left as you do so. Go through the gateway and the car parking is immediately on your left with the gate to the roundhouse on your right. Do not continue down the track/greenway in a vehicle.

Meet your hosts
Meet Tom and Caz
Tom and Caz Ingall live on the farm with their two teenage daughters along with Tom's parents, John and Jane next door. They moved to Leasowe in 2003, a farm that John and Jane had moved to in the early 1990s from the farm Tom grew up on in Hertfordshire. They had been living in cities for university and then for work that took them to live temporarily in Tanzania.
Leasowe was only intended as a landing pad on their return to the UK, but a stunning spring and summer led them to see the English countryside with fresh eyes. Tom had never imagined returning to the family farm and getting involved, but inspired by a plan to convert to Organic practices and the dream of starting a Community Supported Agriculture project they got stuck in.
Wildlife and Environment
The whole farm is a rewilding project that has been put into action as of the beginning of 2025. Funding through the Forestry Commission has meant that they've been able to take the majority of the land out of being grazed by livestock and into woodland and landscape recovery. Over time the land will gradually be stocked with trees and plants that have arrived naturally, either by way of the wind or carried by animals, Oak tree saplings for example are often planted by Jays.
The Roundhouse was conceived, and has been built with sustainability principles at its core. It is a cement free building almost exclusively consisting of minimally processed and biobased materials. Predominantly built with wood, straw, stone, clay, glass, sand and lime. These building materials, some of which were sourced on site, mean that the building has a very low embodied carbon footprint. This is the carbon cost of the production and transportation of each of the materials and the energy emitted in the build process.

The Straw Roundhouse is a beautiful structure. The love and care that has gone into its creation is apparent from the moment you enter the site. Stepping inside is a bit like being enveloped into a big hug. A simple but welcoming space with everything you need for a relaxing stay. The firepit area is equally impressive set underneath a majestic oak tree. Relaxation at its best.
