Overview
As slow travel goes, this is probably the slowest – you’re not going anywhere fast in this old bus – and that’s exactly the point. Old Number 1 is perfect for a couple in search of a digital detox, with no wifi (though phone signal’s available) and a little slice of wild heaven all to yourselves. You can head out to take on the nearby activities, which could be anything from gliding, horse-riding or kayaking to wine tasting. But if you’ve come to escape, then you might prefer to cook in the outdoor kitchen on the BBQ, take on the walks from the front door, or just relax on the top deck, taking in the views, or spying the kites that’ve taken up residence in the tree opposite.
Old Number 1 was once one of five busses made specially for the narrow and twisty roads of The Isle of Man. After that, it became the tour bus for The Isle of Man stunt team, and was later found abandoned in a field – only to be restored and take on a new job as an artist’s liaison bus at festivals, hosting the likes of Blondie, Duffy, Ed Sheeran, and Little Mix to name a few. Now, in her retirement years, Old Number 1 is helping people find the peace and quiet she, and they deserve.

We had a wonderful time! Frankie was really welcoming. The bus and bathroom were beautiful, well-equipped and spotlessly clean. The outdoor space is lovely and relaxing. We couldn't have asked for anything more.

This was an absolutely amazing experience. The bus is beautiful and full of history. As friends for over 40 years we wanted somewhere quirky, quiet and comfortable to spend a couple of days chatting, reminiscing and just hanging out together. It was perfect The bus really is a dream and my friend remembered days spent on one similar with her 'Pa' who was a London bus driver. It is fully equipped and so well restored and converted, situated in a pretty glade with plenty of privacy. The host was friendly, flexible and full of local knowledge. She welcomed us and came to say goodbye (as did her lovely doggies) and whilst we knew she was on hand if needed, left us to it.

We Wanted a completely off grid weekend for my wifes suprise 40th Birthday, Old Number One and host Frankie, provided us with just that, and so much more. Beautiful tranquil location, such character and charm, a setting so beautiful and peaceful. We had rain, sun, snow, frost laden stunning sun rises and sunsets, against the backdrop of the picturesque Shropshire hills, that you can walk straight from the door of the bus. Frankie, the warmest of hosts, and her dogs, supplied us with such a warm Reception, suprise, handmade Birthday banners, and logs for our stay, she was always on hand for all our needs, for a chat, for more logs. She is awesome. Old number one has to be enjoyed by many more people, it's truly amazing. To be allowed to stay in something so beautiful, was an honour, we loved every minute of our stay. We will be back. Hannah& Mark

So I arrived at Kinton with no real expectation, happy to get way, and open to whatever the coming experience was going to be. All I know is that I was driving away from the usual hum and buzz of the city and more and more into open landscapes, quiet and calm. After a long drive, I passed a third cattle grid, parked up, and there it was... Set back and nestled was a bus in the most unlikely of environments! On going on board the inside has been transformed, attention to detail everywhere, and a charming and impressive living space to call home for a few days in the most beautiful of settings. I personally appreciated the eye and imagination in creating such a space for people to enjoy and it was such a pleasure to be able to experience such a place. One of my favourite things to do is to go off on walks into the landscape around, destination not necessarily known. Kinton is already perfectly positioned for you to either enjoy the view from where you are, or to go venturing out into the beautiful surroundings right on your doorstep. All in all I had a wonderful few days, leaving refreshed and thankful for having been able to experience this fun and interesting pocket of peace!
25/09/2023Phil
Amazing from start to finish. Great place, facilities, scenery, the place had everything we could have wished and hoped for.
18/09/2023Duncan
What a fascinating and special place to spend a few nights away from it all. I felt like I really disconnected up here, taking in the incredible views, and the bus itself is a marvel. Everything has been so lovingly repurposed and has everything you need for a comfortable and cosy trip under the stars. There's a lovely secluded feel to the place and Frankie the owner is an absolute gem too. Sitting out by the fire with the bus all lit up felt genuinely magical. If you're feeling the urge to stay here, I'd highly recommend getting onboard with that feeling!
