Overview
Start your day with a hot outdoor shower while you have a chat to the many ducks quacking past. This is a lovely, watery retreat and everything has been built as responsibly as possible. The cabin’s cladding is reclaimed pallet wood, the work tops are re-used oak from the owners’ farm and even the bedside tables in the yurt have been handmade by Ian. All the cooking gear you need is in the cabin kitchen and you’ll find half a dozen fresh eggs to get you started, but it’s a short walk to the communal shop for a veg box, homegrown Shetland lamb chops, sausages from their Mangalitza pigs, chutneys and jams. You can also buy more wood for the burner here or charcoal if you prefer to cook outdoors by the water on the Kadai, which doubles up as a barbecue and firepit. Memorable to watch the light on the water while you sip something cool and wait for your supper to sizzle to perfection. You can also step out onto the jetty and take to the lake on the paddleboards or in Tiddler, the little rowing boat, maybe even trying for a trout or two.
The local pub, the Crown in Pattingham, is an easy walk and has delicious food (some reared by Milly and Ian), friendly staff and a great atmosphere. You’ll also find a shop in the village and nice cafes. From here you can walk to Chesterton and beyond, or head to the Shropshire Hills for some view-filled hiking. Foodies will make the detour (30 miles) to Ludlow for amazing markets and artisan food. On rainy days you’ll find games to play and wildlife to watch from undercover: kingfishers, otters, muntjacs, badgers, dragonflies and ducks give colour to your stay. If you feel chilly later, light the wood-burner, pop a hot water bottle in the bed and settle down with extra wool blankets. There’s a clear ceiling for watching the stars with your head on the pillow and you’ll revel in the peace of this beautiful valley.

Meet your hosts
Meet Ian, Milly, George, Florence and Caspar
In the 1920's Ian's great grandfather bought the estate and although it has changed shape since then, three generations later, in 2012, they took on the running of the 800 acre farm themselves and in 2014 moved into the main house. They love living on the farm and are always outdoors come rain or shine, doing something or other. When it comes to the children it usually involves digging in mud, they are as free range as the chickens! They felt very lucky to have a walled garden at the house which was empty when they moved in, so over the last 6 years they have worked hard to create a very productive veg patch, fruit cage and large mixed orchard where the chickens and ducks roam freely. Although they are mostly arable on the farm they have a herd of rare breed shetland sheep to graze on the lowland heath and also a herd of mangalitzas (very hairy sheep pigs).
At home, like on the farm, they aim to be as sustainable and self sufficient as possible in terms of the food they eat and energy they use. Although they are only just starting out on their farm restoration / conservation adventure they aim to expand the heathland and move towards less intensive agriculture over the whole area. The glamping at Lake William is at the heart of these plans, not only does it allow them to show off what they have done so far, but diversifying the farm business will also enable them to do more.
Having both grown up in Shropshire they are excited to share this beautiful county and everything it has to offer with everyone who comes to stay at Lake William. Slow down, relax and enjoy the peace and quiet of the nature around you.
Wildlife & the environment
They run an 800 acre farm which is a mix of arable land, permanent pasture and woodland. They grow wheat, barley, millet and potatoes alongside a large area of asparagus (which is very popular with the hares). In conjunction with the cropped areas they are also in the Higher Level Stewardship Scheme, under this scheme they grow wild bird seed mixes, pollen and nectar mix as well as wild flower margins and grass corners to protect water courses. However, the most exciting part of the scheme is a conservation project to restore an area to lowland heath (with the help of their shetland sheep), which is a rare habitat in the UK.

We had great communication with the owners before the stay, which really was useful. I felt good knowing I could easily contact them for any issues. When we arrived we were shown around and told where things were kept and how to use certain things (eco-toilet and stove top for example) and there was a handy sheet with more useful information in there. What an amazing stay we had. The yurt was made to feel cosy and comfortable. Loved the bedding, no chance of us getting cold with all the blankets they provided us. We loved just sitting by the fire and watching the lake and seeing all the different animals come and go. We had a lot of rain but we did not let this dampen our mood, we were able to just sit and watch the rain and found that relaxing in itself. When the sun did come out, it was breath taking, the vast amount of colours of green was amazing. Every shade of green could be seen. It was so beautiful. Being able to take the boat out and row around the island was so special too.

We had an amazing time here. Upon walking into the place we had the feeling that we were excited to come back already. It was raining when we arrived but that wasn’t an issue as the downstairs area is open and bright and feels like your sat outside but your dry, you can enjoy the rain. We’d taken everything we needed but there was a great honesty shop that stocked produce and essentials. We loved using the rowing boat, it was nice to park it on our island and use it when we wanted to go out. We didn’t leave the area, apart from exploring around the lake. As it was so lovely to be away from the city. We especially liked the privacy of the island, the owner showed us round and then we didn’t see him again, we had his phone number if we needed him, it was great to just be left alone, it made it feel like our place. Everything worked well, some things better and nicer than at home, cute picnic basket set, great oven and fridge. Everything in the yurt was perfect, clean nice bedding and the log burner kept the bedroom so warm. Before our arrival we were offered a number of different additions that we could order for the stay, this is a nice touch.

Our stay definitely exceeded our expectations! Milly greeted us on arrival and was warm and welcoming, showing us around and telling us about the accommodation and facilities. We had 3 peaceful, relaxing days on the island. The highlights were listening to the sounds of the birds and rowing around the island. It was magical!

I stayed on Otter Island which was situated on a farm. I had the whole duration of my stay to myself. I read, meditated, did yoga... all outdoors overlooking the lake, surrounded by trees and with nothing but the sounds of wildlife all around me. The village, just a pleasant 45 mins walk away was very pretty with a lovely cafe. I had the time of my life and am missing the place already :)

We had the most wonderful, peaceful and relaxing stay at Otter Island. We loved the remoteness and having the water and wildlife all around us. It was so special.

The stay was fabulous. A beautiful place. We have never done clamping before so were not sure what to expect. We fancied something different, but definitely not camping! Everything we needed was there. It was true to the description on the website. The host was friendly, she emailed us as soon as we made the booking and kept us informed.

Otter island is a beautiful place for a relaxing time away. The accommodation is comfortable and spacious with everything you need at hand. Just wish we could have stayed longer.

We fell in love with otter island from the moment we parked our car , there were wheel barrows ready for our laugage so we didn't have to walk up few time , very helpful and thoughtful little thing . We walked past the lake got to the bridge feeding our eyes with stunning views The hut was very nice and very organised, everything we needed and we thought about was there , from umbrella for rainy day to games , books to read , blankets for evening time , all pots and pans , you name it everything was there . What a fantastic place . Kitchen very easy to use , nice fire pit with BBQ outside , upstairs there was a fire pit indoors for chilled night, sitting are just outside the door but stunning views for the lake . Little boat is was great to chill on the water . I can't describe how great the place is . Very satisfied with our stay .

Totally perfect stay! Of all the glamping and camping we've done over the years, Otter Island is absolutely our favourite. It's a beautiful, secluded and peaceful site on a small island in the middle of a pond that is clear enough to watch the trout swim past! Ducklings, a haze of incredible blue dragon flies, lilies and a wonderful array of fauna and flora adorn this extremely well restored lake. The yurt is cleverly designed to sit on the top deck with lovely views over the tree tops and pond. It's beautifully furnished and the bed is very comfy. The log burner provides plenty of warmth and wonderful atmosphere. The lower kitchen and sitting area is just delightful with its open front looking over the fire pit and lake. We ate delicious BBQ fresh lamb and asparagus from the farm and there's a range of home made jams and chutneys to enjoy. The kitchen is well equipped and having a proper gas oven/hob and fridge makes all the difference. The shower is lovely and the loo is a modern compost, so no smells or awkward seats - it doesn't feel like you are camping at all! We loved pottering around in the rowing boat and felt utterly refreshed. Absolutely loved it!!

Otter Island really is a slice of paradise, the views of the lake and wildlife make your stay here peaceful. We enjoyed our nights sat around the firepit. The row boat was a lovely way to see the island and was so much fun. The yurt was designed beautifully and we loved the chilling on the decking in the sun.
26/05/2023Jordan
A peaceful and relaxing two night stay. We enjoyed rowing around the lake and watching the ducklings. The yurt was incredibly cosy and the hot outdoor shower with views of the trees meditative.

A lovely location, very peaceful with great facilities

Amazing place, just idyllic. Location superb, felt like we were miles from anywhere! Every single detail had been thought of, down to hot water bottles in the yurt for if it was cold , to umbrellas on the back of the door for if it rained. Ian was very helpful and showed us around and was on the end of the phone if we needed anything. The kitchen was fully equipped with everything to cook. We loved the outdoor shower and the eco friendly toiletries. Can't fault anything on Otter Island.

Wonderful unique stay, filled with wildlife and peace. Well equipt glam ping. Easy to access but far enough away to be secluded. Hilarious geese!

Otter Island was gorgeous and super peaceful. I spent most of my days sitting on the hammock watching birds and seeing the light change throughout the day. In the afternoon the whole place just lights up and you feel this really lovely glow from the building. I ended up recording and looking out for birds, I never thought I'd be into bird watching but there were so many kinds there that I couldn't resist, I even saw my first kingfisher! There were so many places to relax, from the yurt, the sun loungers on the balcony, the sofa, to the hammock! Cooking was easy as well, with a fridge and an oven; and amazing produce from the farm itself. Honestly this space had that perfect blend of being out in the country and away from it all, but also having enough essentials to make being there straightforward and easy. Would highly recommend this space, absolutely gorgeous.

A weekend of total peace, solitude and relaxation. The perfect way to de-stress, regardless of the weather. Everything you need is provided and although you are greeted upon arrival, the owners leave on alone to enjoy your time there. A truly wonderful experience and we intend to go back as soon as we can.
24/06/2022Susan
Otter Island was beautiful, serene and peaceful. We can't wait to come back.
30/05/2022Michelle
Otter Island was the perfect 2night break away before heading into the Easter BH weekend. Its a great balance between being eco friendly and user friendly, whilst still feeling like you also at one with the surrounding nature. The Geese kept us highly entertained as they chased each other round the lake, the moor hen was busy with her nest, and the birds singing away in the trees. Otter Island is well thought out, complementary eggs, comfy bedding, herb garden, wood burner for extra cosiness, outdoor shower, the shed shop with homemade wild garlic butter, lamb chops/sausages, delicious jams/chutneys and pickles for sale, woodland walks, rowing antics on the lake. Its got so much to offer and definitely a place to visit. This place beat our trip Paris. I needed to unwind, and break away from my phone and I didn't want to leave, a slice of heaven in Shropshire.
13/04/2022Charlotte
It was beautiful. Felt very wild and back to nature, with a bit of luxury ;-) We loved the fishing and the feeling of being completely alone.
06/10/2021Kirstie
We had the best stay ever! We felt so removed from real life and just loved being so close to nature. We bought local meats and cooked them on the bbq, had a fire every night and drank wine listening to the wildlife. This place is a hidden gem and we will 100% be back.

Peaceful Serenity.

We had a fantastic stay at Otter Island. The location was completely perfect, being set on its own island with a bridge and our own rowing boat. The yurt built over the outdoor kitchen was a unique and interesting set up. Everything was well equipped and carefully thought out.
13/08/2021Demelza
If you are looking for a really off-grid rural retreat to relax, unwind and recharge, this place is perfect! During my visit here I was amazed at the amount of wildlife literally on your doorstep, from baby frogs, to little ducklings and even a kingfisher! The warm shower and cosy wood-burner in the sleeping area were there to help me warm up on the cooler and wetter days. You can take the little boat out on the lake, so I got to live my Bridget Jones fantasy before whiling away my afternoons reading and looking out across the pond from the sofa in this little haven!

Otter island was absolutely amazing. It offered a range of things for us to do indulge in. It was raining 3 of the days we were there but we lived every second of it. There was a place for a BBQ which we did and sat outside with a fire pit, playing card games. The yurt was lovely and cosy, exactly what we looking for. We overlooked the lake and while it offered calmness, the wildlife that occupied it were entertaining. It was a surprise trip for my fiancés birthday and it even impressed him. We throughly enjoyed every moment and memories we have made will last a life time.

A peaceful and relaxing two night stay. We enjoyed rowing around the lake and watching the ducklings. The yurt was incredibly cosy and the hot outdoor shower with views of the trees meditative.

It was beautiful. Felt very wild and back to nature, with a bit of luxury ;-) We loved the fishing and the feeling of being completely alone.

We had the best stay ever! We felt so removed from real life and just loved being so close to nature. We bought local meats and cooked them on the bbq, had a fire every night and drank wine listening to the wildlife. This place is a hidden gem and we will 100% be back.

We had a fantastic stay at Otter Island. The location was completely perfect, being set on its own island with a bridge and our own rowing boat. The yurt built over the outdoor kitchen was a unique and interesting set up. Everything was well equipped and carefully thought out.
