Overview
The DugOut manages something extremely rare in the way it makes endless ingenuity and craft seem effortless and natural. The hilltop hideaway is a place to unwind and get back to nature for as long as you wish to escape for, with breathtaking views across three counties. In the evenings, enjoy the constant warmth from the Everhot stove - always ready to cook on, a bath with a unique view, a book by the fire, or a starlit night out by the firepit in your private garden among the hooting owls and the rustles of foxes and badgers.
Ed and Rowena have kitted out this inventive space entirely by hand and lived in it for ten years, which explains why it’s so immediately homely. There’s a craft and passion in everything from the hand cut stone floors, the lines of the rustic bed, the light switches and door latches, the woven blankets, and the hedgerow branches shaped into clothes stands. They’ve personalised each room with local paintings, pottery and weavings, and have even invented (and stocked) the unique bathtub library. The result, even with mod cons like a Bluetooth sound system and Wi-Fi, is a place that inspires you with a closeness to nature and a light, playful character.
The love Ed and Rowena have of the slow life is contagious and they’re happy to introduce you to any aspect of their idyllic lifestyle. Meet the family of farm animals - friendly sheep, goats, ducks and chickens all freely foraging around and about. Learn about the animals and related crafts that make up a smallholding life in courses tailored to suit you.
Ed and Rowena also go the extra mile in treating guests who are visiting for a special occasion and want to surprise a loved one. They offer bouquets of locally grown flowers, a bottle of bubbly set up in an ice-bucket in your room, handmade artisan chocolates, as well as homemade cakes and candles. Get in touch with them before you arrive to create your own bespoke package.
Smallholding sessions cost £50. This price is the same whether for one or two people. Please express your interest in signing up for a session when booking your stay.

We unreservedly recommend the Dug out , Ed and Rowena have built a place of character a place of peace and tranquility which was just wonderful to share . The library bathroom with a view was sumptuous !

After staying in this space you'll want to find land, build a eco house and get some goats! Ed & Rowena have put so much care into crafting a beautiful and inventive space, full of the surprising an unusual. I had a solo retreat and enjoyed cooking my dinner outside on the firepit to the sound of the birds, waking up early to join Rowena on her animal rounds, to experience life on a small holding and exploring the on-site honesty shop, stocked full of handmade pottery and fresh veg from the garden. I left feeling inspired, both by the craftmanship and the sense of generosity.
03/06/2024Tessa
It was a fantastic place to stary! The Dugout is comfortable, quiet and with incredible scenery. The owners, Ed and Rowena, were so helpful and we would definitely want to return there at some point in the future.
29/05/2024Vicky
Gorgeous location and The Dugout is stunning! A really special place to stay. Finished to such a high standard. It’s easy to see why the owners lived in it for 10yrs!

We had the most perfect long weekend at the Dug Out and cannot praise it highly enough. Ed and Rowena had done everything possible to make us welcome and comfortable, excellently well-provisioned, toasty warm and with thoughtful touches of sumptuous luxury. We loved the building itself and the family's warmth, generosity, kindness and manifest respect for the natural landscape and wildlife that is the hallmark of their way of life in this special place. It was genuinely a privilege to be able to have a tiny share in it and to leave inspired and encouraged. The surrounding countryside is very special too and the Dug Out was a great base from which to explore some still unspoilt and peaceful places, for lovely walks on the numerous footpaths which lace the county, beautiful churches and some excellent pubs too

A lovely weekend in a beautiful property in the heart of the Herefordshire countryside with lots of quirky features and thoughtful touches. Highly recommend.

The DugOut is an exquisite place to stay. Such attention to detail & care in the beautifully crafted eco-home. The experience made us mindful of the simplicity of good living, and grateful for buttercups and birdsong, tasty local ingredients, sunshine, beauty and craftsmanship. Everything we needed was at hand, and we were able to relax, unwind and enjoy a few days perfect escape. It was lovely.
01/06/2022Alice
We had a wonderful stay at The DugOut, it was everything we hoped it would be for our escapist weekend from London. The photos don’t really do it justice, it’s much more spacious than we expected and has every comfort you could need. The beautiful bath and the huge comfy bed were both particular highlights. Hope to visit again one day!

We had a wonderful stay at The DugOut. Ed and Rowena were fantastic hosts and made the stay extra special. The DugOut is a beautiful property and Ed has taken care of every fine detail incorporating nature into the design. His hand drafted touches are incredible. The onsite Tump Shop is an excellent addition and cam in really useful. The location is stunning and we had a wonderful stay. Would highly recommend and would love to make a return visit

It was a special occasion and we wanted a very special place, hence we booked it a year in advance to get the dates
02/08/2021Jackie
We had a fantastic weekend at the Dug Out. Ed and Rowena were on hand to welcome us on arrival and they had left some lovely treats inside for us to enjoy. The cottage is quirky, beautifully finished and feels like home from the minute you walk in. It’s the perfect place to escape from everyday life and properly relax and do as little or as much as you like.
02/07/2021Nichola
Quite simply it was among the five best places we have ever stayed in the world. Definitely not everyone's cup of tea but it was certainly ours. We loved the craftmanship of the DugOut, the isolation, the quiet, the ducks, the views and the owners. Price per night is high but we were happy to pay that for the experience and we were drawn in by its magic. The home made lemon cake awaiting our arrival was a lovely touch as was the ability to purchase essentials without leaving base.
21/06/2021David
We had the most amazing weekend at the Dug Out. Storm Dennis tried its best to ruin our break but it made it even better. It meant that we could relax and enjoy doing nothing without feeling like we should be out and about. Ed and Rowena couldn’t have been more welcoming and friendly. We are planning on starting our own Smallholding and the advice that Rowena gave us on the Smallholding course was invaluable. Honestly couldn’t have asked for a better weekend
14/02/2020Amy
A perfect place for a peaceful getaway. I wanted a few days of cosy isolation between busy times at work, and The DugOut was the ideal spot. The cottage is comfortable and has everything you could need, with extra luxuries including a huge extra-comfy bed and the incredible library-bath with a view! It was constructed with great love and craftsmanship, and is filled with organic shapes and cunning touches unlike anywhere else I've ever visited. Ed and Rowena (and family) are such lovely hosts - it was reassuring to know they were close by at the 'Big House' should I need anything, and the addition of the Tump Shop meant I had everything I needed. The DugOut feels like a home rather than a holiday cottage, which meant it was so easy to relax and switch off. I will definitely be back!
17/06/2019Jenny
Our stay was quite honestly exceptional. The attention to detail was first class.. from the little local food store made just for us making meals a breeze to the design fixtures and finishes. It felt natural ant sophisticated, all at the same time. And did I mention the owners? So genuine and welcoming.
13/06/2019Emily
Truly lovely. Can't wait to go back. We stayed from the Friday to Monday. The uniqueness was wonderful and Ed and Rowena were the best hosts. We've stayed in a lot of locations with other companies but this was by far the best.
10/05/2019Michael
We really enjoyed our stay at The DugOut. Ed & Rowena are the most welcoming, generous & friendly hosts/owners. It was lovely having a wood burning stove, whilst relaxing in the evening. The whole design of The DugOut is amazing; what a creative mind Ed has! The decor is very tasteful too. Excellent views from the garden. Fun to meet the animals. We recommend this place highly.
22/03/2019Christine
It was truly wonderful. The Dug Out was an absolute delight and we received a very warm, friendly welcome which was a lovely start to our stay.
04/03/2019Philip
Our time in The DugOut was wonderful. Ed and Rowena are the sort of people who make you feel welcome just by saying hello - although they went a lot further than that! The DugOut is the perfect place to unwind, slow down and just enjoy being alive. The structure is so unique and we loved all the one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted features. The vistas are stunning, the firepit and woodburner make life cosy and we loved the homemade treats. I don't even feel like I've covered all the good parts about our stay. We would gladly return!
31/10/2018Miranda
We had a truly memorable stay. The dugout is beautiful and so is the setting. Rowena had left us some home baked cake, bread, jams and a few essentials which made us feel very welcome. Both she and Ed were incredibly hospitable and helpful. The house itself is gorgeous and the shower is amazing! I would recommend it without hesitation.
15/10/2018Louis
We had a fantastic time at The DugOut. It was a perfect place to get away for an unconventional honeymoon. It really was all we could have hoped for. Rowena and Ed were so welcoming, and we really enjoyed time with them learning a bit about the smallholding, their fascinating home, and some woodworking too. The DugOut was first rate and ticked all the boxes. We loved having a shop at the end of the garden with a fabulous selection of high quality provisions. It was delightful to spend time looking at the buzzards during the day, and the stars in the evening without any interference from the rest of the world. We're looking forward to returning to The DugOut in the future.
01/10/2018Katrina
Where do we begin? Amazing location, phenomenal hosts and everything you could possibly need for a relaxing break. The DugOut is beautifully designed with a real unique character - we honestly didn't want to leave! It had a very peaceful atmosphere. Ed and Rowena were very friendly and the best hosts ever, as was the cat Midnight. We will definitely be back.
27/06/2018Elizabeth
Ed and Rowena are incredible hosts, they have thought of everything! The fact that The DugOut was made with Ed's bare hands, truly it is a feat of architecture really inspired! An onsite honesty shop has a variety of delicious bits from ready meals to wool blankets all made locally or by Ed and Rowena themselves! Spent the evening submerged in an immaculately presented bathtub library of sorts, reading the classics and basking at the night sky from the bathroom window. The views are glorious!

What a great stay, the dug out was brilliant, such a great design, so many quirks and a insight to Ed's creative vision. The living area and kitchen was well set out, the log burner was very good, place was very well insulated as well. The both bathrooms were well set out, plenty of hot water. Bedroom was huge, the high vaulted ceiling gave a great impression of space. The windows looked out on to a outstanding view. Me and my partner loved the place, Ed and Rowena were lovely people and very welcoming.

Our stay was quite honestly exceptional. The attention to detail was first class.. from the little local food store made just for us making meals a breeze to the design fixtures and finishes. It felt natural ant sophisticated, all at the same time. And did I mention the owners? So genuine and welcoming.

Truly lovely. Can't wait to go back. We stayed from the Friday to Monday. The uniqueness was wonderful and Ed and Rowena were the best hosts. We've stayed in a lot of locations with other companies but this was by far the best.
