Overview
At the far side of Jeremy and Clare’s woodland, surrounded by peaceful Herefordshire countryside, Dawn of the Day sits in a secluded position and comes with a cosy double bed in a curtained-off alcove. As a whole, it’s a remarkably romantic spot – if you really want to go all out, get the fire bowl lit, pick up some tips from the ukulele book provided and serenade each other by firelight (the ukulele’s provided as well of course). The shower and compost loo are 150m away through the trees so you’ve got plenty of space to yourselves. Jeremy masterfully built both of the shepherd’s huts at Hollow Ash from local, natural materials.
There are plenty of opportunities to get creative at Hollow Ash, with the guidance of local experts – try basket weaving or green woodworking, and you can even make your own apple juice in the autumn. Or if you’d rather get out and about, the Forest of Dean, Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons are all within reach for anything from a gentle walk to serious hiking.

By car
Broad Oak is approximately 8 miles west of Ross-on-Wye on the B4521 (Abergavenny Road).

Take the Hereford Road out of Monmouth and travel 5 miles to Welsh Newton. Take the second turning left (opposite the village hall) in the direction of Broad Oak and Garway. Meet your hosts
From owners Jeremy and Clare:
"We have lived at Hollow Ash for twenty years. We have part-time work away from the property and have worked to make the smallholding pay with apple juice and cider and a few sheep. Since 2009 we have been building shepherds’ huts. It was a natural progression to share our beautiful spot with others by letting out our own huts.
Wildlife & Environment
We are actively promoting wildlife through habitat creation: the young woodland attracts a variety of birds including tawny owls, and buzzards frequently glide overhead. We are members of Monmouthshire Meadows Group, which aims to protect and increase flower-rich meadows. We have continued our green philosophy into this venture with a ‘Natsol’ compost toilet. We are a Shepherd’s Hut building company so our huts are built on site to high ecological standards. We use local & natural materials - e.g. hemp & sheep’s wool insulation, timber from the nearby Forest of Dean, wrought iron from the village blacksmith, OSMO products etc. The huts are double-glazed using warm-edge technology, they are solar powered and each has a wood burning stove fired by home-grown fuel. One hut is situated in 4 acres of young, native woodland which we planted 7 years ago, and the other is in a small traditional orchard planted with old and local apple varieties."

Katrina
Such a beautiful place, created with such care and attention to detail. Clare was really warm and welcoming and provided us with a little tour and welcome basket on arrival. The location was so peaceful and felt really isolated which allowed us some respite from the City.
21/07/2023Meggie
Our stay was perfect. Facilities were incredible. Our host was.lovely and welcoming. The hut itself was well equipped with everything we needed and very cosy.

Great time staying 3 nights in Dawn of the Day. Clare and Jeremy were great hosts. Wonderful setting amongst the trees. Great walking country and close to River Wye for some canoeing and spotting kingfishers. Lovely sense of seclusion and space to relax and unwind. Fascinating to see coppicing and orchard at work and looking forward to tasting more of the cider and perry we bought.
29/08/2022Nick
What an amazing place. Absolutely beautiful. Clare and Jeremy were amazing. The hut was outstanding, comfortable, and exquisite. Nothing was too much trouble. Peaceful and relaxing. Would highly recommend and will definitely be going back. Thank you for such a warm welcoming.

Had a really lovely stay, beautiful setting. Amazing experience

We had the most idyllic stay at this beautiful shepherds hut. Everything that you could need is available for you, including a well thought out welcome pack. The location is perfect, quiet, off the beaten track and very secluded. The hosts are so welcoming but also not hovering around. We used it as a great base to explore Hereford. This was our first time in a shepherds hut and I think it might have spoilt us for the future, it was kitted out so personally that you'd think the owners had just popped out. A comprehensive outdoor cooking area included an open fire, with all the equipment to cook on, or for the less adventurous, a set of gas rings. The toilet, shower and washing up facilities were clean and comprehensive, first time using a compost toilet and I was expecting some smell but nothing. I really can't fault this wonderful location and we will be going back. If you would like a break from the pace of the world this is the perfect place to get back to nature with all the comforts you could need, oh and a really comfy bed.
29/09/2021Nicky
Such a lovely spot and a really cute hut with everything you need and a feeling of complete isolation and tranquility. The hut was really clean and the facilities all worked well. There are also some chickens about which came to check on us a few times! They have cider, perry and juices for sale which are made in the orchard, and it was really nice to sample a few during our stay. The orchard feels like it is in the middle of nowhere, yet you can quickly get to several large towns and to lots of tourist attractions. Unfortunately for us, we’re not good in heat and there was a heatwave when we went, so we definitely need to go and stay again in more bearable temperatures! We would definitely recommend this lovely place.

We had a really relaxing weekend at Dawn of The Day. The hut itself was cosy and comfortable, and had everything we needed. It's a wonderfully peaceful setting surrounded by trees and wildlife, and beautiful scenery beyond. We have already recommended it to others, and they are hoping to book a stay soon.
18/06/2021Jenny
I greatly enjoyed my stay. It was good to get out into the wilderness and be totally alone, but at the same time to do it in comfort and style!
19/10/2020Catrin
We loved our stay at Dawn of the day as we needed a quite retreat and this was a true getaway and we loved all the little extras given by the hosts of tasty bacon homemade bread butter and lots more ! Would highly recommend .
15/09/2020Kathryn
I had a really lovely stay at Dawn of the Day. I was there by myself for some relaxing time to read and write -- its perfect as a writer's retreat. The place is beautiful: the woods that owners Jeremy and Claire have established contain many different species of tree and are inhabited by a wide range of birds. There are great walks you can do nearby.
25/08/2020Alex
Chose Dawn of the day because we wanted somewhere as far from other people as possible and it was perfect! Located in a dense wood in beautiful countryside. The owners welcomed us with a hamper including their homemade apple juice bread bacon some other items, really friendly and left to our own devices. The hut was lovely just the right size for two, warm and comfortable. Outside cooking on a tripod was great fun and there are plenty of quiet walks in the area. Thoroughly recommend it!
13/07/2020Ian
Our stay in Dawn of the Day was magical! It was incredible to be tucked away in the trees for a weekend. With little noise and light pollution, it proved to be a perfect get away.
16/08/2019Molly
Fab!! Perfect 2 night break in the middle of nowhere- just what we needed. The perfect place to talk and rekindle a relationship!
10/08/2019Donna
We stayed for three nights and it was a surprise for my girlfriends birthday. She loved the shephards hut immiediatly, as did i. It was in a glade at the end of a beautiful (and hand planted!) forest, it was so special i don't have words to describe it! We will definitely be back.
19/07/2019Tom
Jeremy and Clare were lovely, helpful hosts, the setting couldn't have been more magical, the hut was a delight, even the weather was kind! A perfect stay, everything I might have hoped for.
20/10/2018Katherine
An amazing place that truly exceeded our expectations! The quality of our accommodation was exceptional, as were the toilet/bathroom facilities. Clare and Gerald were so friendly and welcoming, giving us privacy but making themselves available if we needed. The food parcel was a wonderful (and very tasty) touch. We truly felt we had a restful and relaxing break away in a beautiful location
17/08/2018sarah
We loved it. Placed on its own in the middle of a small wood, the shepherds hut was beautifully designed, especially the comfortable bed ! We were provided with all we needed for cooking and eating on the stove and the outside fire and spent some lovely evenings roasting meals on the fire. The holiday was made really special by Claire and Jeremy’s personal touches like the welcome basket with their home made cider and their generosity in sharing their local knowledge of the best spots to visit in this very beautiful area of the country as well as their thoughtfulness in anticipating all that we might need.
03/08/2018Jill
Exceptional. A rural idyll with friendly, informative hosts. This is a new benchmark in glamping whilst still being affordable. We ran, canoed, climbed and still had plenty of time to relax by the fire over a long weekend.
01/06/2018Imogen
We had a fantastic stay. Jeremy and Clare were both really helpful and had provided everything we needed. Hollow Ash is situated in a great location with walks and pubs close by and lovely views. We would highly recommend it and are already thinking about the next visit.
04/05/2018Richard
Our 3rd year returning to this beautiful place. Hosts are so friendly but don't bother you at all so you really are left alone. The Hut has everything you need including a welcome basket and the bed is the comfiest I have ever slept in. The location has stunning views but very private so a perfect getaway from the world. Great pubs nearby for good food.
06/10/2017Helen
Wonderful, the most magical and enchanting stay. Two perfect days away in a beautiful location, every thing we needed was provided. The homemade food basket was a wonderful welcome. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting a romantic getaway.
09/08/2017sarah
Wonderful place to stay. Very accommodating hosts. Everything needed was provided and more. Very private location.
20/07/2017Steve
My stay was absolutely wonderful. From the location to the welcome basket everything was just divine. The hut is very well appointed and comfortable. Everything you need is there. The fire pit cooking accoutrements were a nice bonus. I recommend the apple juice and the pear cider in addition to the apple cider you receive in the basket.
16/07/2017Wendy
The hut we stayed in was lovely and we liked that it was a bit away from the toilet and other hut. It was very homely and clean too. We got a hamper with bacon, eggs, bread, cheese and apple juice which was all very yummy. We had everything we needed. The area is beautiful too, quite remote which we wanted, but lovely walks to surrounding areas.
27/05/2017Hayley
My husband and I stayed for a long weekend at Dawn Of Day near Monmouth. We had planned this trip around our 1st wedding anniversary and wanted to do something a little different. You really are able to escape to nature but still feel comfortable. We enjoyed the country side walks and small market towns. I would highly recommend it.
12/05/2017Jemma
We had the most wonderful stay at Dawn of the Day. Everything was perfect from the gorgeous Shepards hut itself to the lovely basket of fresh farm produce which welcomed us on arrival. An absolute idilic place to relax and unwind and with five star facilities.
05/05/2017Rebecca
Such an idyllic place - we loved it. The welcome basket was such a sweet touch, including delicious homemade cider and apple, beautiful jam and bread as well as essentials in the cool box, including milk and bacon. Dawn of the Day is set apart from the toilet and shower and other shepherd's hut, so it feels very private. Thank you for such a brilliant few days!
11/04/2017Lisa
A magical place. The owners had thought of absolutely everything we could need. Will have to try a mid winter stay at some point so we can have the log burner on
23/09/2016Charlotte
Dawn of the day was the perfect place for us to celebrate our first wedding anniversary! It was thoughtfully and beautifully set up, perfect location and had everything we could have needed. Great local river swimming spot was recommended to us by Jeremy and Claire and it didn't disappoint! We really loved it and would strongly recommend to all who are looking for some food for the soul!
05/06/2016rachel
We had a fantastic 2 day break at Dawn of the Day. Clare met us on arrival and took us through an introduction of the site. Our hosts were then on hand but not interfering with our break. The facilities were clean and well presented. The shepherds hit itself was bigger than it seemed from the pictures on the website but was cosy and well maintained. We had a fantastic weekend of being unplugged from the world and were able to build a fire in the fire pit, settle down with dinner and a glass of wine and to just enjoy our time.
04/09/2015Jeni
It's been a wonderfull stay at Jeremy's and Claire's shepherd's hut. Every single detail was provided and the place is truly magical. There's plenty to do and visit around and the friendliness of the people is stunning. Highly recomended!! :)
31/08/2015Daniel
We enjoyed our stay thoroughly and couldn't recommend it more. Claire and Jeremy were so lovely, and the shepard's hut was the perfect countryside getaway. There are also many activities around Hollow Ash to keep you busy and entertained. We climbed Skirrid Fawr, which has spectacular views of the black mountains, visited the last remaining fortified medival bridge in monmouth, saw the fastest animal in the world up on yat rock (the peregrine falcon) and paddled a canoe through the river Wye all in one day.
26/06/2015Amelia
Very relaxing enjoyable stay - felt so chilled out after our few days
23/05/2015Sarah
We had a lovely, relaxing weekend at' Dawn of the Day'. The location is very peaceful and the views are stunning. The facilities were of an excellent standard and we had everything we needed - even somewhere to charge our phones! Clare and Jeremy were very welcoming and provided a lovely welcome hamper with local produce for us to sample. The shepherds hut was warm, cosy and very comfortable. This was most definitely 'glamorous camping'!
02/05/2015Lisa
Lovely place to stay with all the facilities we needed - well equipped kitchen/washing area, lovely huts, loved the hammock and ukelele. We were grateful for the maps and list of things to do and went out to a few of the places listed which we enjoyed.
07/04/2015Zoe
Very enjoyable and novel experience! Made a nice change from hotels and B&B's. Our hosts provide us with everything we needed from chopped wood to fuel the fire to fresh farm produce for breakfast during our stay. The cabin itself was gorgeous and comfortable. The only drawback is that we had to drive for quite a while to reach an affordable pub that wasn't fully booked! Would recommend others to book before arrival. Overall great experience would definitely go again!

"This was a heavenly autumn retreat, The shepherds Hut was beautiful, with a comfy bed and a wood burning stove. I was greeted by a hamper of delicious treats and some friendly chickens who kept me company. The hosts, jeremy and claire were so welcoming and made me feel at home on their farm, i wanted to escape the world, and i had all the space and peace I could want"

"Our stay was perfect from the moment we arrived, it was so good we didn't want to leave. The accommodation is compact and perfectly formed. The facilities are fantastic with some lovely touches from the owners. The owners were very helpful and were really friendly. There is no doubt that we will be back."

Our stay in Dawn of the Day was magical! It was incredible to be tucked away in the trees for a weekend. With little noise and light pollution, it proved to be a perfect get away.

Fab!! Perfect 2 night break in the middle of nowhere- just what we needed. The perfect place to talk and rekindle a relationship!

We stayed for three nights and it was a surprise for my girlfriends birthday. She loved the shephards hut immiediatly, as did i. It was in a glade at the end of a beautiful (and hand planted!) forest, it was so special i don't have words to describe it! We will definitely be back.

Jeremy and Clare were lovely, helpful hosts, the setting couldn't have been more magical, the hut was a delight, even the weather was kind! A perfect stay, everything I might have hoped for.

Exceptional. A rural idyll with friendly, informative hosts. This is a new benchmark in glamping whilst still being affordable. We ran, canoed, climbed and still had plenty of time to relax by the fire over a long weekend.

We had a fantastic stay. Jeremy and Clare were both really helpful and had provided everything we needed. Hollow Ash is situated in a great location with walks and pubs close by and lovely views. We would highly recommend it and are already thinking about the next visit.

Wonderful, the most magical and enchanting stay. Two perfect days away in a beautiful location, every thing we needed was provided. The homemade food basket was a wonderful welcome. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting a romantic getaway.

We had the most wonderful stay at Dawn of the Day. Everything was perfect from the gorgeous Shepards hut itself to the lovely basket of fresh farm produce which welcomed us on arrival. An absolute idilic place to relax and unwind and with five star facilities.

A magical place. The owners had thought of absolutely everything we could need. Will have to try a mid winter stay at some point so we can have the log burner on

It's been a wonderfull stay at Jeremy's and Claire's shepherd's hut. Every single detail was provided and the place is truly magical. There's plenty to do and visit around and the friendliness of the people is stunning. Highly recomended!! :)

Very relaxing enjoyable stay - felt so chilled out after our few days

We had a lovely, relaxing weekend at' Dawn of the Day'. The location is very peaceful and the views are stunning. The facilities were of an excellent standard and we had everything we needed - even somewhere to charge our phones! Clare and Jeremy were very welcoming and provided a lovely welcome hamper with local produce for us to sample. The shepherds hut was warm, cosy and very comfortable. This was most definitely 'glamorous camping'!

Lovely place to stay with all the facilities we needed - well equipped kitchen/washing area, lovely huts, loved the hammock and ukelele. We were grateful for the maps and list of things to do and went out to a few of the places listed which we enjoyed.

"Absolutely perfect, Jeremy made us incredibly welcome. Everything had been thought of, including lovely welcome hamper including cheese, eggs, bacon and cider! Hard to nail one thing down as the absolute best, we really enjoyed cooking our dinner over the campfire however!"

"Our stay was perfect from the moment we arrived, it was so good we didn't want to leave. The accommodation is compact and perfectly formed. The facilities are fantastic with some lovely touches from the owners. The owners were very helpful and were really friendly. There is no doubt that we will be back."

"I had a great time; Clare greeted me as I arrived and showed me around; otherwise I was left to my own devices and loved the solitude the location offered. The hut itself was immaculately appointed, and I was hugely impressed by the beautiful welcome hamper and cool box I was given on arrival."

A really quiet, peaceful little corner or the world. Facilities were all we needed and the campfire area was the perfect spot for two nights of stargazing and roasting marshmallows.
