Overview
Clouds scud above you, green scenes surround you in this ‘pod of plenty’ in the deep Herefordshire countryside. It’s not often that glamping comes with this much luxury thrown in, but you’ll find underfloor heating to warm your toes, dimmer switches to soften the lights and a fancy en suite with rainfall shower. It’s deeply romantic: come as a couple to watch the stars from the deck with a bottle of fizz, wander the well-lit paths on the way back from the pub, and cook up a storm on the campfire or the fully equipped kitchen. Babes in arms and/or a youngster, under 10 years of age and four-legged friends are also welcome here, and there are snuggly towels for drying dirty paws and dog bowls and blankets, too. Of Cynefin's four pods, Hazel is furthest from the small car park, so you won’t feel overlooked despite your near neighbours. There are books to borrow and board games for damp days, but walks in the Welsh hills is interesting in all weathers – the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains are a short drive away.
The Felgate Family has a long history of looking after guests, with previous places to stay in nearby Hay and far-flung Tobago, too. They transformed the overgrown meadow and woodland at Cynefin into a relaxing space where indoors and outdoors merge together: walk barefoot from your door to feel the morning dew kiss your toes, light a fire to keep you warm as you read outside on a crisp and clear evening and toast locally-made marshmallows over the embers. Nearby Hay-on-Wye has plenty of restaurants and pubs to keep you fed if cooking’s not on the menu, plus bookshops galore, a castle and a thriving farmer’s market. Across the river there’s a small farm shop and café for stocking up – you can’t canoe there, but you can mosey on downstream to find pubs for post-paddle fuelling. Treat the place like your own little sanctuary: no one to check up on you, and there is a key to let yourself in. Lovely Becky lives nearby should you have any problems during your stay.

Meet your hosts
Meet Lorna and Steve
Bringing Cynefin Retreats to fruition has been 6 years in the making, starting in 2012 when father and daughter team Steve and Lorna first visited the plot of land, consisting then of an almost impenetrable woodland and some decrepit low grade utility barns. Yet even in its overgrown and unloved condition, Lorna could feel the magic of place. They then started to dream of creating a luxury getaway where people could leave their busy lives behind, and find year-round inspiration and rejuvenation in a short break and holiday stay located in the Wye Valley.
The family's inspiration for Cynefin is the wonder and joy of British landscapes – the mountains, hills, meadows, rivers and streams – and their aspiration to make this stunning Welsh-English border landscape accessible and enjoyable, year-round, whatever the weather. Like others, the pair have often headed to warmer climes where living in the outdoors is more-or-less guaranteed by a stable climate. They dreamt of creating a natural, uncontrived holiday destination in the UK, for people to escape to where it remains possible to enjoy nature and an outdoor lifestyle all year round. Lorna and Steve were so excited when this perfect setting of five acres became available and they began turning their dream to reality.
Lorna and Steve's aspiration is to be an exemplar for eco-tourism, founded on a low carbon footprint in aesthetically beautiful contemporary accommodations, providing year-round employment to local people and service providers. They invite you to celebrate the magic of the British climate, famous for its diversity and changeability, from the luxury of their state-of-the-art accommodations, purpose designed for living in the local landscape, across the seasons.
Wildlife & environment
Cynefin is are located on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, one of only five locations worldwide with a ‘dark sky’ status due to its low light and air pollution. The lodges therefore make for an excellent spot for star-gazing. There is a ‘secret willow garden’ at the end of the woodland, with woven and shaped willow boughs, the perfect quiet spot for a picnic, or reading a book. As you walk through the woodland, you will see habitat piles providing a home for local wildlife, hedgehogs, along with a plethora of bird, bat and owl boxes. There's also a public footpath bordering Cynefin Retreats, which leads up to the hills and down to the river. The path connects into the Wye Valley Walk and Offa’s Dyke is also close by.

We stayed at the Hazel Pod and it was lovely. Very clean & modern whilst still retaining that rustic factor. Kitchen was very spacious as was the bedroom & shower.

The Hazel cabin was the most perfect place for a weekend of relaxation. It was modern, quirky and in a beautiful, quiet location. The hot tub was a perfect way to unwind and we loved the added touch of the fire pit and marshmallows. Waking up with a huge window overlooking the beautiful surroundings was just the cherry on top. Couldn’t have been a better weekend. Thank you so much!
26/07/2024Jessica

A lovely break away from it all, immersed in nature. The cabin was warm and cozy. The hot tub was lovely and hot on arrival. Hay on wye was a lovely little town to visit nearby.

Perfect location. Beautiful cabin, well maintained and all amenities provided. Easy booking process and sufficient updates in terms of arrival information/what to expect. Amazing getaway holiday for couples, lots of privacy and lots of information provided on things to do etc. Friendly hosts.

We came for our mini moon from Monday - Wednesday as a little digital detox from all the planning and organising and I can honestly say we had the best couple of days. What a beautiful place. It looked exactly as advertised and was such a magical place to wake up. A few walks in the countryside, champagne by the firepit and a relax in the hot tub. Just perfect. We even stopped by Hay-on- wye
11/12/2023Danielle
Such a cosy little cabin, it was a perfect getaway for our anniversary, so romantic and secluded! The hot tub was amazing, we never wanted to leave!
16/11/2023Sarah
Hazel Cabin is stunning, it has everything you need and more. An abundance of resources, privacy, luxury, relaxation, and fresh air. The hot tub and outside fire were the highlights, not to mention the really comfortable bed and stunning view. It is also the most private of all cabins as it is off to the left of the site. I would love to go back.
30/09/2023Isabella
Beautiful views across Herefordshire. Just the most relaxing stay.
28/07/2023Georgina
We had a fantastic time, the cabin was lovely, the views amazing, a very relaxing holiday
17/07/2023Lorraine
We spent a couple of nights at the Hazel cabin as a bit of a last-minute get away and general treat. Had the best time: the cabin was perfect and we were spoiled with good weather so made good use of the fire pit and hot tub. Spent a day exploring the surroundings and local footpaths as part of a run to Bredwardine and had a swim in the Wye there. Fully recommend the Bridge in Whitney for an evening meal and drink overlooking the Wye. Also recommend having a look around Hay on Wye which is a short drive
15/06/2023Ben
Beautiful location with uninterrupted views across fields. It’s not quiet though! You will hear the competing sounds of birdsong, cows lowing, sheep baa-ing and lambs calling to their mothers.
09/05/2023Emma
Our stay at Hazel Cabin was amazing. One of the most beautiful and luxury pods I have ever seen, with stunning views and all the amenities you need
07/04/2023Rebecca
Really enjoyed our stay. The views were fabulous, we loved waking up to them, and spent a lovely evening in the hot tub watching the sunset. It was very private and not overlooked in any way. The cabin was spotlessly clean, well equipped, warm and cosy. The bed was very comfortable and we slept brilliantly. Location-wise, it was just a short drive from Hay-on-Wye which had several eateries, bars and plenty of other amenities. The surrounding countryside of the Wye Valley was stunning. We would love to visit again.
17/03/2023Abby
We had a really lovely stay we had everything we needed and the staff on site were great. Great recommendations from them too and we loved Hay on Wye
30/12/2022Hannah
We loved our stay! The cabin has been beautifully designed with everything you could need. The location is perfect - with its own private garden complete with patio, fire pit and looks out onto a field. Hazel felt like the most private of all the cabins due to its location and it backs onto a lovely woodland walk that we enjoyed taking with our dog. The weather was pretty stormy during our stay, but that only added to the cosy atmosphere and we enjoyed cuddling up in front of the fire. Waking up to see the sheep in the field was such a treat. We loved the little touches in the cabin - the lavender body wash made locally, the delicious apple juice and the marshmallows for toasting (used for hot chocolate in our case!), it was all so well thought out.
07/11/2022Fera
We had a fantastic time at Cynefin retreats and only wish our stay could have been slightly longer! The environment and location is perfect. Close enough to make it an easy distance to travel to, but far enough off the beaten track to feel peaceful. Our pod was spacious, well equipped, comfortable and full of natural light. Checking in and out was easy. We truly had everything we needed to relax and enjoy ourselves.
16/04/2022Freddie
It was totally relaxing.
01/04/2022Karen
We loved it! It was the perfect lying in bed with a great view that we’d been after. Lovely location and such a beautiful place to stay in.

Absolutely gorgeous cabin, overlooking fields and hills. The hosts thought of everything - even prepping both the log burner and the fire pit for ease of use. All the little touches made for a really special stay.
17/11/2021Sian
We had a lovely time at Hazel Cabin for the weekend. The cabin is warm (under floor heating is the best) and of course the hot tub. Kitchen and appliances were perfect and everything was clean. The sunrise each morning was absolutely amazing. Will be returning in future!

We absolutely loved our stay at Cynefin Retreats. It was a stunning location only 10 minute drive from the lovely Haye on Wye. There were great facilities for self catering but also options for eating out/ take away. The hot tub is amazing, drinking prosecco overlooking the beautiful countryside! It is a spacious lodge for two people with plenty of privacy.
23/09/2021Niamh
It was a fabulous place to use as a base to explore the Brecons. Only 3 hour drive frim home.
01/09/2021Carol
Had the most wonderful stay in Hazel Cabin. The location was so peaceful, we loved sitting in the hot tub in the evening, listening to the sheep and watching the birds and bats flying past the cabin in the twilight. The cabin had absolutely everything we needed and was beautifully designed had the feel of something between a luxury boutique hotel and an alpine ski lodge. We chose to eat in each evening to make the most of the cabin and the views. Can't recommend enough, we loved our time at Cynefin Retreats.
03/08/2021Hannah

Stunning spot. Beautifully done cabin. Couldn't have asked for anything more in regards to amenities inside the cabin. Finished to a very high spec. Hot tub was perfect for relaxing in on the cold night! Was the perfect spot for both me and the soon to be wife as this is where I popped the question. So very memorable!
04/01/2020Bradley
We were very lucky to get a day of clear blue skies which really showed off the beautiful landscape of the surrounding area, the perfect place to get away from it all and switch off from the world, we spent a wonderful new years eve at Hazel Cabin, with Barney the dog.

Even provided us dog bowls for our little pup. The views are beautiful, felt so private and relaxed. It was a much needed break for us !

The cabins are beautifully crafted with skilful care and precision. The huge glass windows give you views across the fields allowing the sense of being connected to nature from the comfort of the cabin. You can open the doors and let the fresh air in or close up to the night sky and cosy up in-front of the roaring fire. The perfect peaceful escape and stones-throw from Hay, our favourite town of books where you can spend days wandering from bookshop to antique store to deli and more.

This was our first stay at Hazel Cabin and will definitely not be our last! The cabin was better than expected. It was very secluded and peaceful which is what me and my boyfriend wanted. Highly recommend if you’re after a relaxing break away.

Beautiful location with uninterrupted views across fields. It’s not quiet though! You will hear the competing sounds of birdsong, cows lowing, sheep baa-ing and lambs calling to their mothers.

Our stay at Hazel Cabin was amazing. One of the most beautiful and luxury pods I have ever seen, with stunning views and all the amenities you need

Absolutely gorgeous cabin, overlooking fields and hills. The hosts thought of everything - even prepping both the log burner and the fire pit for ease of use. All the little touches made for a really special stay.

We were very lucky to get a day of clear blue skies which really showed off the beautiful landscape of the surrounding area, the perfect place to get away from it all and switch off from the world, we spent a wonderful new years eve at Hazel Cabin, with Barney the dog.

We stayed in the most beautiful cabin, a whole wall of glass doors floor to ceiling. What better way to enjoy the incredible views of the countryside? We were lucky enough to wake up to enjoy a beautiful sunrise one day!

My partner and I went for my partners birthday, it was incredible! The area was secluded, quiet and perfect. The cabin itself was 10x better than I expected! Hot tub, fire pit and underfloor heating! What more could you want?

Had an absolutely fantastic stay at Hazel cabin. The place is so beautifully designed and finished, and the attention to detail is spot on. We enjoyed the peace and quiet, watched the sunrise from bed, and walked around the ground and woodland. We took our puppy with us and she loved enjoying the grounds, and all the thoughtful dog friendly touches!
