Overview
Yurtis, a beautifully crafted space of natural beams and soft blankets, is on the left-hand side of the lovely Campwell Woods village as you approach down the path. There’s a stove in the corner, a big double bed, and nothing else to get in your way. The yurt is your bedroom, and the shower, loo, wood-fired sauna and kitchen facilities are shared with villagers in the other spaces scattered through the woods. The village has been carefully designed to inspire you with nature and help you rediscover your inner wild child, from the primal cooking to the rope bridges over to the bathrooms. Once you’ve settled into the yurt, you’ll be ready to explore.
You can adventure or relax as you wish. Find the lake and you can canoe, paddleboard and swim. There are courses and classes on offer, from yoga, qi gong, archery and woodworking to foraging and campfire cookery. Meals, cooked on the open fires of the kitchen, are a sociable affair but you can find private spaces among the trees if you’d rather be alone. Bath is nearby, if you fancy stepping back into modern life, with sandstone buildings, historic sites and shops that make for a relaxing day trip.

Meet Tim Bowles and Tim Gatfield
Campwell Woods was born through a friendship between two Tim's who worked together for a number of years. Tim Bowles (Tim Jr) owned Campwell Farm on his 5th generation family farm since 2013. A number of structures were inspired and built with Tim Gatfield (Tim Snr) from Campwell Woods. Tim Snr, with the help of his apprentices and many volunteers, has been building Campwell Woods since 2005. It is a low-impact eco-village where they ran a number of green woodworking courses. They were named in the Top 10 creative retreats in Europe in 2019. A change of circumstances meant Tim Snr asked Tim Jr to take on the site and run it. He was honoured and saw it as another perfect space to inspire people to live more simple, natural and adventurous lives. Campwell Woods will continue to host woodworking courses and a number of other retreats and activities. Watch this space and join the adventure.
Wildlife & the environment
Wildlife is abundant at Campwell Woods. Taking time out to sit still and listen will bring all sorts of exciting wild moments. Bird life is thriving with a full canopy of mixed woodland around the valley - you’ll hear and see everything from woodpeckers to buzzards soaring above the trees. Deer are often seen roaming the woods along with foxes and badgers at dusk or after dark. Be aware, if you leave some food out overnight, some woodland creature might well be very grateful for it. It’s their patch too.
The woods is fully off-grid and feels in harmony with the natural environment. All structures have been built from the trees in the woods using centuries-old traditional techniques.

What an incredibly special place Campwell is. It felt like we’d been given golden ticket into a secret magical woodland, stepping back in time, back to a simpler life! Each space is it’s own character nestled into the village and the communal areas are the perfect place to learn to connect and light fires together. The woodland is alive with nature and you’d never guess you were only a stone’s throw from Bath. Talk about unique experiences, the open-air loo and the shower with the view of the woodland and the most beautiful swimming lake for your morning dip. What a place.

My partner, my dog and I spent 5 days at the beautiful Campwell for a short break away from our busy lives. Having spent the last 18 months working as an intensive care sister in a covid unit, getting away from everything and getting back to nature was much needed. Campwell was relaxing, peaceful, clean and well equipped for all our needs. Our little dog had the most amazing stay too!
