Overview
It would be nice enough to sit outside the shepherd’s hut and look at the green fields of Essex stretching out in front of you. But add some extremely local fine wine, made from the vines around you, and it starts getting really special. Then switch from the firebowl and deck chairs to your private hot tub and you’re on an absolute winner. It’s all part of the decadent experience that Angus and Pod Crowther have created on their small vineyard, where The Poacher’s Hut, and The Grain Silo, about 50m down the path are the latest careful additions amongst the vines that produce the delicious wine that you really should try. The rest of their work has been in planting flowers and hedgerows to encourage wildlife to visit, although with the often-vain hope that they leave the grapes in peace. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot muntjac deer, hares and foxes rambling over the land around the hut or when you’re out walking.
As well as the rambles round the vineyard, you can track down great walks on the parish maps in the hut and set off in search of one the many local pubs. The Foragers Retreat in Pebmarsh has wonderful locally sourced and seasonal food and at The Henny Swan outside Sudbury you can have a drink by the riverside and even hire kayaks, although preferably not in that order. If you do fancy a dip that doesn’t come as a result of falling out of a canoe, head for Gosfield Lake a great wild swimming spot only a few miles down the road. When you get back, you can fire up the hot tub, open a bottle of something superb and settle in for a steam under the stars.

Angus and Pod Crowther are fourth generation farmers who are the current custodians of the farm, with their four young children; Amelie, Beatrice, Charlotte and Hamish. The Crowther family continue to diversify, between farming arable crops and producing award-winning English wines from their vineyard. They have also converted a 400 year old threshing barn to host wine tours and tastings, plus a small number of weddings each year.
Wildlife & Environment
Tuffon Hall Vineyard plant acres of wild flowers and hedgerows to encourage bees, insects and birds. There is an abundance of rabbits, hares, foxes, pheasants, partridge and fallow deer surrounding the vineyard. Tuffon Hall Vineyard often works with charities such as FWAG, the farming and wildlife advisory group.
Tuffon Hall Vineyard wines are vegan and the packaging for them is 100% biodegradable and recyclable. Grape skins are reused to distill into grape gin, and the sloe gin is produced using sloes gathered from around the farm.

We had the most relaxing and enjoyable stay at the Poacher's Hut. The hut itself was clean, well equipped and catered to almost every need you could have. The outdoor fire pit and hot tub made the stay even more special and even though we didn't have the best weather, this did not dampen our stay in any way!

My boyfriend and I had a wonderful time! The hut was clean and cosy! The hot tub worked brilliantly. Perfectly situated there was enough for us to do but we also loved chilling in the hut and enjoying the peace and quiet. Thank you so much!

The silence, it was so peaceful & tranquil. The hut was spec'd to a high standard & was spotless. The bed was so comfy & the sheets were all very pristine. Facilities were excellent & the hot tub was an excellent added bonus. We also had a wine tour with the owner which was really nice & the wines are superb!

We stayed for 2 nights and were lucky with GLORIOUS hot May weather. The Hut is totally wonderful, so peaceful and private. Beautifully decorated. Absolutely wonderful.

We were given a voucher for Christmas, my husband didn't want to spend more time traveling than relaxing.... So I looked close to home. 25 miles to this gem. Sadly the weather was wet for the first 24hrs. Regardless we settled in to the spotless hut. I got the wood burner going and we were cosy in no time! Husband got the hot tub burner going, we were not about to let the rain spoil anything. Spot of reading and dinner, then hot tub. Lovely! Next morning we were rained off cooking breakfast on the fire pit. So a Google and 5 mins drive to The Moot cafe for a really good breakfast. Fabulous start to the day, next week did the tourist thing and went to the Colne Valley Railway Museum. Back to the hut for lunch, the weather brightened, dried up and we were outside. Getting the hot tub going again, water was still warm, so didn't take as long. We just enjoyed the peace and the views. We really managed to relax and enjoy the break. Talking, laughing, reading, just doing nothing together. Bliss.

It was perfect! The peace, stillness, quiet and privacy were beyond what we expected! We didn’t realise that we would literally be in the middle of the vineyard! One morning while having coffee in front of the vines we saw a rabbit hoping past! The cabin and outside area were pristine and were luxurious! The hot tub was the star of the show of course. Absolutely addictive watching the stars at night from the hot tub hearing nothing other than fizz from our Champagne!

The Poacher’s Hut is an absolute gem. We loved it. It had everything we needed for our two night stay. The decor inside is lovely and very restful. The bed was very comfortable and it has a sweet little bathroom with a decent shower. The kitchen area is well stocked, with a microwave, plates, cutlery, utensils, glasses etc. The hot tub was wonderful and we had fun heating it. We ordered the continental breakfast, cheese board and a bottle of wine. All was superb. For us, nothing was wanting and we would love to stay there again.
15/07/2022Zoe
The Poacher's Hut is set in a beautiful vineyard. We drunk the wine and gin from Tuffon Hall, and spent the days lounging in the sunshine and evenings cooking over the fire and relaxing in the hot tub.
10/06/2022Rebecca
Gorgeous spot, would highly recommend. I went for a weekend to escape the city.. the view and the quiet surroundings was amazing. I enjoyed a sunset in the hot tub and another by the fire, perfect weekend away.

We had a lovely, romantic 2 night stay. The poachers hut was cosy, comfortable and well equipped.
07/05/2022Sarah
Staying there was so cosy I didn't want to leave. The underfloor heating was a big plus when during the night it got quite cold outside. The bed was so comfortable I woke up feeling that my batteries were fully recharged. In the afternoon, staying in the hot tub watching the vineyard was a unique experience. During the night, going back to the hot tub to watch the stars was yet another unique experience. Having an ensuite with a shower and flushing toilet was a luxury which I always appreciate! I also went to a 30min walk to the nearest castle and later in the same day drove to Lavenham, a picturesque village only 15 miles away. The owners are lovely and around to answer any questions and make suggestions or things to do and places to visit. Had an amazing relaxing time and wish to go back soon!
