Overview
This quiet spot in a rural corner of Essex is the antidote to stressful London life. As you sit out on the private patio with your morning coffee, you’ll notice that the background noise isn’t sirens and traffic, it’s birds and the breeze. Red Kites wheel overhead, ducks and swans glide across the lake and pheasants forage for breakfast on the edge of the water. The hut has everything you need to sit back and let the countryside lower those stress levels. There’s a hob and oven for cooking, running hot water in the sink and the modern en suite bathroom and a big comfy double bed. There’s a wood-burner to warm the space too. Outside there’s a BBQ area and your private patio, screened from Teal, the other hut thirty yards further down the track, by the trees. You’ll find lovely local apple juice and jam, fresh bread and the farm’s own eggs, so you can enjoy breakfast and views of the lake and the vineyard without having to leave the peace of the woods.
When you do decide to head out, there is much to explore, with the coast less than a mile away. A walk past the duck pond and its many curious residents will bring you to the old tide mill, one of the few in the country still functional. Past the mill, a footpath runs along the Colne and you can follow it through the fields and woods all the way to the village of Wivenhoe. As well as being a charming place, with colourful houses along the estuary, it’s home to the Black Buoy Inn, well worth a stop for a good pub lunch or an evening meal, although you’ll need torches to navigate back if you stay late. While you could spend a couple of days just lazing in the woods or exploring the vineyard, there are great day trips around. Mersea island is a pilgrimage for seafood fans, there’s a seal colony at Walton on the Naze and great birdwatching in two nature reserves, Hamford Water and the Blackwater Estuary.

We stayed at Wigeon, Shepherd’s Hide in Colchester for 2 nights to celebrate our anniversary. The hut was located on a farm with a vineyard and a beautiful lake - it was tranquil and relaxing!
28/06/2024Kalpana
I stayed here with my husband for a long weekend and we absolutely loved it. The hut was both cozy and modern in its design and included a huge comfy bed and fully functioning toilet and shower. The view of the lake/river was stunning, and we particularly enjoyed having our dinner on the pic nic bench and breakfast at the little breakfast bar inside the hut.
11/08/2023Siri
Absolutely perfect. We did a 2 night stay for our anniversary and to escape a toddler for some quiet and widgeon absolutely delivered. The peace and quiet was stunning, the whole area was beautiful and being able to only hear ducks in the morning instead of screaming for an iPad was absolute bliss.
17/07/2023Frances
Overall we had a wonderful recharging weekend. The shepherd's hut was very cosy, tastefully decorated and well-equipped. The surroundings (the lake, the trees and the birdsong) were beautiful.

My husband and I had a very relaxing, comfortable stay at the cosy Wigeon hut. It's very well-equipped, has a comfy, big bed and it's tastefully decorated. The location is lovely and quiet and you'll hear gorgeous bird song all around. It's in a great location and the walk to Wivenhoe is long enough to get up an appetite if you fancy a meal at the Black Buoy Inn or the other restaurants in the village. We didn't really want to leave but normal life in London was calling! We'll definitely be back though.
02/06/2023Jessie
Really lovely stay, the hut had everything we could want for a cosy break. Modern touches here and there for comfort but still retaining that beautiful rustic charm. Lovely location with a little stretch of water right outside and the coast nearby.
13/03/2023Jenny
We were in need of some time away just the 2 of us and our stay at Wigeon was perfect in every way. Perfect easy to get to location, great countryside walks, great for bird watching and the farm birds added to the lovely charm of the place. The hut itself was superbly comfortable, lovely and warm with the woodburner/electric heater, lovely big comfy bed with views over the fields and lake. Couldn’t fault our stay and very reasonably priced too.

Me and my partner has the most relaxig 2 night stay at the hut. The walks round this area are stunning and getting to watch the sunrise and sunset over the beautiful lake just topped it off nicely. If you’re looking for a quiet, no phones, no internet getaway - this is the spot for you!
17/08/2022Kayley
I had a very relaxing stay for 3 nights at Wigeon. It was the perfect way to reset before I started a new job and I really had a chance to switch off and rest. The photos don't do justice to the location - it's stunning!
15/07/2022Kate
My partner and I had such a great time at the Shepherd’s hide. We had a 3 nights stay, which allowed us to completely disconnect and recharge our batteries. Waking up to such a beautiful location with singing birds, trees all around and a lake view was amazing. There was a beautiful walk though a natural reserve from the hut, and although we did have a car to explore the surroundings I could have been content staying at/around the hut. We were also very spoiled by the weather as it was sunny and warm. I’m very happy we chose this particular stay and would definitely recommend it to friends!
15/04/2022Anna
We loved our cosy winter stay - so relaxing - walking, resting, reading, talking, watching sunsets from Wigeon.
11/02/2022Lucy
The stay was incredible and was in fact my best holiday yet. Me and my partner celebrated our anniversary and the location and facilities couldn't have been any better. This was the most amazing place and Polly was so accommodating and made it clear she was there if we needed anything. She even helped us look at places to order dinner from.

We had a lovely relaxing stay at Wigeon! The surrounding area was beautiful.

Wigeon is a nice cabin, in a fantastic location. The cabin is well-equipped and the hosts are friendly. It is close to a bus stop, so can easily be visited, with a little forward planning, by people without a car.
23/10/2021Josie
This stay was booked for a friend's 60th birthday. She had an amazing time and we were close enough to go down for a surprise day with her and her husband. The owner was fantastic with helping us with this and giving suggestions about things to do. It was fantastic.
15/10/2021Michele
What can I say - perfect peace (apart from the laughing ducks), surrounded by ancient oak trees, long coast marsh walks from the door. Polly and her Mum were so welcoming and friendly. They have created a little slice of rural paradise here. Spotlessly clean, everything you need, really nice shower and loo and gallons of hot water. It's romantic, spacious, tranquil, beautiful .... just perfect. Thank you! 2 night stay. fyi the bed is a really good size, and easily big enough for tall people!
20/09/2021Lucy
I had 4 nights in Wigeon and I'd say it was the perfect amount of time for unwinding away from London. I honestly couldn't have asked for a better trip. It's the perfect little fairytale cabin, complete with fairylights inside and a lake/pond out front with plenty of wildlife wandering about to watch. I enjoyed being quite remote (the closest shop is 25 min walk and it's 1hr walk down to Brightlingsea to enjoy the coast and various watersports) as I love walking, but for people that maybe don't want to trek everywhere I'd suggest coming in a car or hiring to make journeys quicker.
05/09/2021Stephanie
We loved this place. We went there with two other friends so between the four of us we felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. The location felt so private and secluded, and the surroundings were just stunning. Wigeon had a lovely entertaining space outside with a great little kitchenette in the hut, making for the perfect entertaining space. At night the festoon lights along the pathway looked so pretty, and the whole stay was so comfy, relaxing and peaceful.
13/08/2021Daniel
Fantastic stay in a beautiful location. Relacong, comfortable and peaceful. The accommodation was well thought out and had everything we needed. The view of the mill pond and the local walks were stunning.
01/08/2021Melanie
My partner and I stayed for a couple nights to escape city life for a breath of fresh air and we couldn’t have asked for a better host. Poppy was amazing. She was there to greet us on arrival. The wagon was in pristine condition, fitted with everything you would need. My partner and I walked for miles through the farm. It was simply gorgeous. We will definitely return for another little getaway. Thank you.
25/07/2021Raquel
Lovely comfortable relaxing stay.
23/07/2021Declan
Absolutely loved this place. Getting away from the city life was well needed and this place was perfect for it. Waking up to chickens, ducks and nature was a lovely experience. Wish we could of stayed longer!
29/06/2021Ciara
We stayed at Wigeon for 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our time. The farm is absolutely beautiful and the accommodation itself was very nicely done up. We had everything we needed and would come again!
07/06/2021Charlotte
Lovely place with very calming view over a lake with oak trees
03/06/2021Alice
We had such a lovely stay at The Wigeon! Such a beautiful and relaxing place with some lovely local walks. A real cosy cabin get away! Can't wait to go back!
03/05/2021Jennie
Three night stay, Friday to Monday. Visited Wigeon for some relaxation away from work etc. The hut is in a great spot with a view across the lake to the fields beyond. Birds flying past, sheep in the distance, and ducks everywhere! Host was very friendly and I am sure would have been able to sort any issues if their were any. The hut was cosy, and the log burner was excellent in the evening. Everything that we needed to chill and unwind. Excellent trip
30/04/2021JOSHUA
Myself and my boyfriend had the most amazing stay at the Wigeon shepherds hut. This has been the first holiday where we’ve felt completely relaxed, and it was the perfect way to shut off from our busy lives. The shepherds hut was stunning in every way possible, and the bed was incredibly comfy. I loved the detailing with the fairy lights and the decor was beautiful. To wake up to the sounds of bird song, and the view of the lake was something else. It takes you to a place like no other, and when packing up our things to go home, we were both incredibly sad. We’re already looking at when we can stay at the Wigeon again!
28/04/2021Holly
Peaceful and beautiful. Comfortable hut with gorgeous view of the lake. Everything you need for a short stay away from it all.... We just sat and watched the swans nest and the birds sing. Walked along the Colne estuary into Wivenhoe via the Essex marshes.
18/04/2021lori
It was beautiful, we arrived and even unpacking the car set the weekend up perfectly. Quirky wheelbarrows to help us take our stuff to our little hide away. Chickens, ducks and geese (friendly ones) all walking about freely and greeting us as we walked about. We heard deer, said hello to some adorable little pigs and made friends with some sheep and cows. On top of all this the scenery and location is stunning, a view of the lake and vineyards from our window as soon as we wake up. Even when the weather took a turn and got a bit rainy, everything was so picturesque that we didn't care. Our hosts were very friendly and though we didn't see them much, we appreciated that they let us just get on with it and explore as we wanted, as long as we were respectful of the others who live close by. We were greeted as we arrived, and they were always just a text away if we needed anything. The wagon/caravan itself was beautiful, it was decorated brilliantly and when we arrived we were both blown away by it's character. It had everything we needed and despite the cold nights outside, we stayed warm inside with the help of a brilliant little log burner and electric radiator.
01/11/2020Charles
Instructions to the hut were very clear and was a beautiful drive to it. Was in an amazing location!! The hut itself was next to a lake with ducks and chickens and was a great place to sit on the huge log placed by it to have a hot chocolate whilst watching the sun go down :) we loved the hut. It was very nicely decorated (loved the fairy lights) and cosy with all the amenities that would be needed for staying there. The owner Polly was very nice and came to check on us to see if we needed anything else.
29/10/2020James
An amazing place to stay. The location was perfect and the setting so quiet. We loved the way that space was maximised in the hut. The host was delightful and so welcoming. The changes made for COVID meant we felt very safe. Thank you for a great few nights break.
19/10/2020Jodie
We had a really lovely weekend, switching off form technology and decompressing from city/lockdown life. Delightfully secluded and nestled in nature, but close enough to walk to nearby towns and seaside. We loved it.
25/09/2020Lucy
It was fabulous, a home from home, I would definitely go back here again.

a lovely little winter stay away! you could enjoy this wagon in all different types of weather. it was torrential rain and heavy winds throughout our stay. but we were more than happy cuddled up with the fire going, with our books and hot chocolates listening to the sound of the rain against the windows. the wagon was kept warm with an electric heater and use of the fire. we woke up to the sounds of the horses, geese and ducks and it was just so tranquil and lovely. we were really sad to leave. you have both frinton and walton on the naze only a half hour drive away so there was plenty to venture out and do. can imagine it being lovely in the summer sitting out on your bench on the patio looking over the small lake right outside the wagon. fairy lights lit up all the way up the path to guide you to the wagon was a really nice little touch. thank you so much!

Fantastic stay in a beautiful location. Relacong, comfortable and peaceful. The accommodation was well thought out and had everything we needed. The view of the mill pond and the local walks were stunning.

Thank you.

Absolutely loved this place. Getting away from the city life was well needed and this place was perfect for it. Waking up to chickens, ducks and nature was a lovely experience. Wish we could of stayed longer!

We stayed at Wigeon for 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our time. The farm is absolutely beautiful and the accommodation itself was very nicely done up. We had everything we needed and would come again!

We had such a lovely stay at The Wigeon! Such a beautiful and relaxing place with some lovely local walks. A real cosy cabin get away! Can't wait to go back!

Peaceful and beautiful. Comfortable hut with gorgeous view of the lake. Everything you need for a short stay away from it all.... We just sat and watched the swans nest and the birds sing. Walked along the Colne estuary into Wivenhoe via the Essex marshes.

An amazing place to stay. The location was perfect and the setting so quiet. We loved the way that space was maximised in the hut. The host was delightful and so welcoming. The changes made for COVID meant we felt very safe. Thank you for a great few nights break.

We had a really lovely weekend, switching off form technology and decompressing from city/lockdown life. Delightfully secluded and nestled in nature, but close enough to walk to nearby towns and seaside. We loved it.

Woke up and sat on the deck drinking coffee, sipping that amazing local apple juice, watching red kites gliding over the fields and pheasants wandering around by the hut.

a lovely little winter stay away! you could enjoy this wagon in all different types of weather. it was torrential rain and heavy winds throughout our stay. but we were more than happy cuddled up with the fire going, with our books and hot chocolates listening to the sound of the rain against the windows. the wagon was kept warm with an electric heater and use of the fire. we woke up to the sounds of the horses, geese and ducks and it was just so tranquil and lovely. we were really sad to leave. you have both frinton and walton on the naze only a half hour drive away so there was plenty to venture out and do. can imagine it being lovely in the summer sitting out on your bench on the patio looking over the small lake right outside the wagon. fairy lights lit up all the way up the path to guide you to the wagon was a really nice little touch. thank you so much!
