Overview
The Old Orchard Shepherd’s Hut is the epitome of simple, homely elegance, with its hand-stitched plum curtains and roses entwined around the door. It’s an entirely local project, made from local timber, and even the wrought iron curtain rods were forged on site. The shepherd’s hut is at the top of the hill looking down over the orchard, which at the right time of year is carpeted with gorgeous pink apple blossom.
There’s a standard double bed in the hut and a wood-burner to keep you cosy. There's also a small fire pit just outside the door with a bench just for two, where you can warm your fingers in the evening and watch the sun go down behind the Chillies Copse on the other side of the valley. There's a fire pit for cooking al fresco, as well as a shed-come-kitchen with a kettle, double ring gas hob, toaster, crockery and sink. There's a dinner table in the kitchen, which can also be carried outside, weather-permitting! The electric shower is in the bathroom hut just 50ft away.
If you'd like to explore the farm, there is a signposted farm walk. Once you've worked up an appetite, you can make your way to one of the many excellent local eateries – two are within walking distance. Alternatively, if you fancy getting out and about, being just outside Exeter makes the West Town Farm a great place from which to explore the rest of Devon, whether you want walks in Dartmoor, local swimming spots or surfing off the coast.

Meet your hosts

Andy’s family have been leasing West Town Farm from the Church Commissioners for the last three generations, and they've been farming in the area for even longer, starting out on the other side of the valley. Originally the family just kept a dairy herd, but in Andy's capable hands the farm is now a successful organic beef and pig farm.
What makes West Town Farm a bit different is Andy's belief in farming as stewardship of the land, and in encouraging people to come out and experience farm life. This means that, in addition to inviting people to stay in the shepherd's hut, the farm organises weekend walks looking at the its environment and history, and holds events such as live theatre performances and the popular annual Barn Dance, as well as private events like wedding parties.
This dedication to the community is also reflected in the farm's special partnership with OrganicARTS, a charity based at the farm. They work with West Town Farm to run school visits and open days for the local community, as well as running volunteer days in their community garden, organising artistic workshops such as life sculpture or Raku firing, and taking part in Devon Open Studios where, for a couple of weeks every September, the farm buildings and trails are transformed into a gallery space.
Wildlife & Environment

Andy was an early convert to organic farming methods and the farm is now in its 21st organic year. The farm is also managed under Natural England’s Higher Level Stewardship scheme, which involves replanting orchards and hedgerows, growing fields of wild flowers for bird food and ground cover and maintaining areas of woodland. This means the farm is abundant in wildlife, from flowers, bees and butterflies to badgers and over 50 species of birds, from the rarer hawfinch to a very entrenched family of buzzards. Visit the West Town Farm website for loads more information on its history and wildlife, including videos of some resident badgers!

We stayed for 3 nights. We loved our visit to Topsham. Exeter cathedral is 15 minutes by car. Comfortable bed. Great log burner & log supply. Outdoor fire pit. A great place to be in touch with nature.

An absolutely charming little hut, warm and cosy. Perfect place to get away from it all, and yet still be really close to plenty of things for us and the kids
27/08/2023Andrew
We loved staying here. Compact, with everything we needed; simple, elegant, stylish. Lovely grounds and surroundings to enjoy from our fireside.
12/06/2023Rosalyn
We stayed 2 nights in the Old Orchard Shepherd's Hut - it was perfect. Theres no shortage of things to do and explore nearby, and we loved spending hours at the Orchard having dinner in the sunshine and having some beers by the fire. Waking up to the sound of birds and sheep was idyllic - it was such a relaxing stay. The kitchen hut is well equipped and the shower is nice and warm. Away from the hut we explored the local pubs, Dartmoor and Totnes. Would recommend!

A beautifully peaceful plot, the sheppards hut was superb and the additional kitchen and bathroom buildings were well equipped and clean. A great spot to get away from it all with great walks, beautiful views and just a shiort walk away from welcoming local pubs.

What an amazing place to stay and only short distance from the local city, beautiful layout, well kept eco toilet (no smells) Great walks, peaceful, lovely little farm shop, everyone was very helpful and they have basic camping and Bell tents so I'll definitely return and also not far from the village which has 3 pubs, I visited the huntsman, the food was great and staff lovely Also nice to have a key safe which I used while I was out so I didn't loose the key I felt safe here as a solo female
10/06/2022Nicki
We had a lovely weekend at the Old Orchard Shepherd's Hut. It is situated on a farm with lovely walking routes clearly signposted. The nextdoor field had a cow and calf which really made our stay magical! It was lovely to open the hut door in the mornings and see the animals. There's a fire in the hut which made it really cosy and heated the space up really quickly. The loo is compost which was much nicer than anticipated - no smells. There is a kitchen hut with gas stove and all the basic kitchen equipment you'd require. We went out for the days, and visited Tophsam and cycled from Exeter to Dawlish along the waterfront. A really lovely stay.
08/04/2022Alice
I spontaneously booked in for a self-directed Artist's Retreat. Not where I would have expected to go (see below) as I live about half an hour away and have known West Town Farm for years - but didn't know it had this Shephard's Hut. Worked out perfectly in the end and was really glad I did it. I am also recommending the venue to friends.
25/02/2022Amerie
We had a great stay. The spot is secluded in a lovely area. The fact there's power in the hut gives you a bit of luxury like a hair dryer!
05/02/2022Rebecca
Lovely relaxing stay from start to finish. A truly needed break from the busyness of everyday life
16/10/2021micha
A long weekend at a delightful shepherd's hut with separate kitchen and toilet/shower facilities. Secluded, different and a brilliant experience. Peace, seclusion, no TV etc. And we ignored our mobile phones.
16/07/2021Yvette
Excellent. liked the hands-off 'check in' which added to the sense of remoteness
14/07/2021steph
Three ladies on a relaxing girls weekend away from the hustle and bustle of work and family life enjoyed the peace and tranquility of this lovely location.
02/07/2021julie
We had a lovely stay together! The location was beautiful, and it was a short walk to the local shop, with buses going into the town centre regularly. The farm shop nearby had some delicious meat which we enjoyed cooking in the kitchen. Some items were provided for us in the kitchen, including a brownie and some milk already in the fridge upon our arrival.
28/06/2021David
Great location, great welcome, clean, remote, idyllic. 2 nights by the camp fire in a cosy shepherd'shut. Friend's camped next to us
25/06/2021James
We had a wonderful two night break at the Shepherds Hut. It is so peaceful and tucked away in total privacy. We particularly enjoyed watching the bats along the hedge at twilight
20/06/2021Steph
Nice spot, good hut as expected and described on the website. Good facilities, cosy and surprisingly spacious.
16/06/2021Owen
Very nice. Beautiful setting, lots of nice little touches. The shepherd's hut was a good size and very snug.
31/05/2021Benjamin
Relaxed, sunny, all was in order. Just right.
28/05/2021Bea
We had a very relaxing stay at the Old Orchard, the location was lovely, and the shepherds hut was very comfortable, with the bad weather the firewood was very welcome for the wood burner.
12/05/2021Christina
Great stay, the hut was cute and the facilities much better than ones I've been to before - lights and electricity, indoor kitchen with fridge, nice compost loo, and a good hot shower. The location was beautiful, and walkable to Exeter. We particularly liked that there was a key lockbox rather than having to collect the key, which meant we could arrive whenever we wanted, and although we could see people out on the land it didn't feel as if we were in somone else's space and we weren't disturbed at all. My only gripe would be the total lack of signal, but that's not really a surprise when out in the country.
10/05/2021Sarah
We had a really lovely time at the Old Orchard Shepherd's Hut. It was a cute place to stay with everything we needed to have a good break. The owners had also left us some sweet treats, which was really thoughtful. Having access to a kitchen shed was super useful when the weather was bad to eat in the pub garden, so we could get takeaway and eat it in the kitchen hut.
03/05/2021Lucy
Lovely stay in nature. Hut was equipped with everything we needed, log burner and campfire was a lovely addition. Setting was stunning - beautiful views from every direction and farm was gorgeous.
01/05/2021Elaina
We had a really lovely stay at the Shepherds Hut. It's lovely and cosy with beautiful views, we couldn't fault it! The farm is gorgeous and the cows bought their calves up to the fence to say goodnight. The service is excellent, thank you Holly for the fresh bread in the morning, half of which my husband left when he 'cleared the kitchen'. If you want peace, quiet and stunning views this place is a must.
29/04/2021Su
It was amazing! We had such a relaxing time, it was easy to find with some lovely lemonade, a brownie, and some milk left for us when we arrived. Everything was cosy with the fire pit outside and the wood burner inside the hut and it was lovely to be in nature and explore before returning to the hut each evening. We loved cooking in the kitchen hut to the sound of bird song and when the cows in the nearby field came to say hello! We had some lovely walks and enjoyed escaping here. The hosts were great at answering questions before we arrived and made sure there was a pack of info including a map for a walk when we arrived. Honestly could recommend this more and was just the getaway we needed to recharge, slow down, and breathe. We’ll definitely be back!
19/04/2021Megan
We had a really peaceful stay here and thoroughly enjoyed the quiet setting, comfortable accommodation and all the little details like the extra blankets, trunk of games, hot water bottles etc. The wood stove in the hut was super efficient, so we were toastie all weekend. The shower was a bit breezy, especially as it was blowing a gale outside but left you refreshed :) Would definitely stay here again.
30/10/2020Rebecca
I had the most wonderful week at West Town Farm. As the first of two weeks in Devon, it was a little haven where I could recharge my batteries after this very peculiar year, throwing myself into a beautiful patch of nature that felt like a treat to wake up in each day. I remember when I first arrived at the orchard, the view and autumnal sunshine just instantly filled me with absolute joy. The hut itself is cosy and so comfy, a lovely little home. The facilities are just a short walk away, which actually enhances the whole being-out-in-nature thing more than anything, pulling on your boots and grabbing your torch after dark. The kitchen is brilliantly stocked and I cooked some of the farm's delicious meaty things on the BBQ pit at night. Grace was a great host, always there if I needed anything. I had everything I needed for my mini-retreat in comfortable walking distance - a small, but well-stocked village shop, country trails and of course, a few nice pubs. It's also close to Exeter if you want to head there too (or use one of the many train routes for a day trip - we popped to Dawlish.) I loved it and can't wait to come back soon.
08/09/2020Lucy
Lovely location, so peaceful, surrounded by beautiful nature, just what we were looking for. Very helpful host, thanks Grace. Would definitely visit again.
25/07/2020Christina
Wonderful stay despite the slightly moody weather! Hut well appointed, very comfy and beautifully clean. So lovely seeing the working farm. You must buy some ice cream from the onsite shop - delicious!!
06/07/2020Rachel
Dreamy. Really lovely hut, with great views of the countryside through the windows and out the front door. Walks around the hut and surrounding hills were a nice way to spend the afternoon, and local pub was fab. Added bonus was that he hit was easy to get to even without a car.
21/02/2020Ben
A lovely weekend away in a beautiful location
25/10/2019Georgina
Excellent stay, with a caring owner who helped us settle in quickly, amazing views, access to the farm shop with the freshest produce
08/08/2019Charlie
Lovely setting very peaceful and gorgeous shepherds hut.
26/07/2019Sophie
exactly as I hoped it would be - quiet and peaceful, a lovely area
14/06/2019Helen
Beautiful and quirky place to stay. Absolutely loved it! Such a fab place to chill out and relax!
10/06/2019Anna
This was the first time we used canopy and stars and what an experience! We ventured out on a snowy weekend, and Grace (the host) went above and beyond to ensure we were warm and happy. I contacted her multiple times to find out what to do in the area beforehand, each time she was more than helpful. The location of the old Shepard’s hut was so beautiful, perfect for a winters night with the log fire on. We stayed local most the time, going to the local pub and walking, and with it being so close to Exeter we ended our roast dinner with a roast dinner there. If you are after a quiet, romantic weekend away this is absolutely perfect, I couldn’t thank Grace enough and we will definitely be back!
01/02/2019Alice
Lovely and quiet nice walks. Hut nice and clean ideal place to recharge the batteries.
24/09/2018Ray
Lovely weather helped make the Old Orchard idyllic. Peaceful setting, green view, sheep for company. Helpful staff and fine meat from the farm shop.
20/08/2018Peter
We stayed for three nights at the Old Orchard Shepherds Hut and what a tranquil stay it was! All you could hear was the cows moo-ing. The hut itself had everything you needed and the bed was super comfy. There was also plenty of cooking facilities - either over the fire pit (where we cooked amazing steaks from the farm!) or in the kitchen hut, great to have to choice. Grace was also a perfect host - offering advice about the local area/being on hand if we needed anything. Thank you for such an enjoyable stay!
30/07/2018Sam
Loved it, so peaceful, lazy mornings, breakfast sat outside the hut, very comfy bed, the mooing of the cows in the morning. Perfect!! Apologies to Grace, tried to clean all the leaves up Sunday in the hut but they kept blowing back in!!
25/07/2018Penny
The Old Shepherd's Hut is wonderful! Grace couldn't have been more helpful in the run up to our stay and the little extras on arrival were gratefully received. The hut is in such a beautiful location. The most picturesque morning views to wake up to, the sound of birds, the occasionally bleat of sheep, moo of cows-it is the most peaceful and relaxing place. Oh and the bed was comfort than our own. We loved how close the kitchen hut and shower/compost loo were but enjoyed the short walk to get there trying to decide how many more mole hills had popped up over night/what bird we could hear singing near us. I couldn't rate The Old Shepherd's Hut highly enough and we do hope to return. Thanks so much to Grace and all at the farm that the hut is located on.
22/06/2018Rachael
We absolutely loved staying at the Shepherd's Hut! It was the perfect weekend break away. Our host, Grace, made the process super easy, and provided us with all of the home comforts we could have asked for. The location is breathtaking, and we loved following the farm trail and communing with the cows and sheep. The hut, kitchen and toilet/shower room were all perfect; with a comfy bed, fluffy towels, and everything we needed to make meals.
26/05/2018Sarah
A lovely little orchard to myself! The shepherds hut was delightful and l felt very content enjoying the company of the sheep, listening to the birds and enjoying the fabulous views. Here is restorative peace! An idyllic walk into the pretty village of IDE with good pubs and all a stones throw from Exeter. l felt very, very close to nature here. West Town Farm has got a good thing going!
18/05/2018Sue
We had such a wonderful weekend in the Shepherd's hut. We were given a Canopy and Stars voucher as a wedding gift and couldn't wait to use it! The hut is situated on a lovely farm, and although we live and work in agriculture, the change of scenery was lovely. We spent the weekend having lazy mornings, long walks in the afternoon along the sea front and eating and drinking in pubs that were walking distance from the hut. It was a peaceful weekend and couldn't fault the Shepherd's hut. Was very spacious, comfortable, (especially the bed!)and well decorated. Had a great feel to it.

Wow! What more can we say?! It was INCREDIBLE!! This place is like heaven in a tin hut! We had glorious weather on day one and nothing but continuous rain on day 2 and it made no difference! It was still wonderful!!! To get there and have breakfast things waiting along with all the meat available on the farm to cook was fantastic! We left a saucepan there, put some milk in it and make some hot chocolate on top of the woodburner and do some marshmallows it was PERFECT!!! we can't wait to go back!!

My daughter and I spent two nights in the shepherds hut. It was a lovely place to be, surrounded by the blossom trees in the orchard. The location in the valley is lovely and it's hard to imagine you're only a couple of miles from Exeter. Grace met us at the farm and was super friendly and helpful. You're then left with the birds and farm animals for company! Having come from a yurt off the grid, it was lovely having a few mod cons ie electric lights, a toaster, kettle and small fridge, big enough for a bottle of wine! While the yurt was freezing at night, we were toasty warm in the hut and the woodburner heated up the small space perfectly. The compost toilet and shower and wash basin are in a wooden 'pod' a short walk from the hut and were clean and had the bonus of electric lighting! Loved walking round the farm on their mini trail, it really is a very special place and was hard to leave behind.

We had a great 3 night stay at the shepherd's hut- the scenery is gorgeous and the hut cosy and warm! We managed to really get into the rustic experience ( 3 days with the compost loo....!), and the hut has enough games and books to keep you occupied in the evenings. I'd recommend heading to the farm shop on site for the best bacon and sausages we've ever had, cooked over a lovely fire pit. Perfect.
20/10/2016Tanya
it was a piece of paradise, comfy, clean, totally amazing
06/08/2016lee
We stayed in the Shepard's hut for 3 nights in total. We sat having coffee admiring the views in the morning! It was the perfect base to go exploring the area - we went to dawlish, exmouth, Torquay and teignmouth! We also had a lovely BBQ with meat from the farm shop on site, over the fire pit. On the evenings we would drink beer and play cards in the cost hut. There are many walks around the farm, which we explored and lots of animals which Andy was happy for us to visit. We had all the basics needed such as an electric kettle, toaster and provided with milk, butter and bread. Having Electricity was fab!! - an extra luxury. We felt miles away from everything there and had such wonderful views to wake up to
03/08/2016Chloe
Beautiful hut, really comfortable. Secluded, lovely views. All basics available. Ideal for a little break in Devon
17/07/2016Hannah
Fantastic place to stay - the hut had everything we needed in it and was a perfect place to relax. It is very remote and ideal if you do not want to bump into anyone else!
09/07/2016Nikki
We had a lovely time at the old orchard shepherd's hut. The area is beautiful and the hut was very pretty, clean and secluded, and having electricity in it was a real bonus. We were very lucky to have three days of very warm sunshine and it was delightful to spend it outdoors. Stargazing on the second evening was a particular highlight. The local village is about a twenty minute walk away, and has a particularly excellent community shop. We took a day trip out to the coast too, and enjoyed some very nice campfire dinners. The orchard itself was a bit overgrown with stinging nettles and thistles so I'm not sure I would recommend taking younger children, and I'd suggest that other visitors take plenty of their own cookware and cleaning stuff along as not much is provided. Overall a lovely experience though.
06/06/2016Rebecca
was a lovely peaceful weekend break with my son-nice base to explore the quaint little village of Ide and not too far to travel from the motorway
21/05/2016fiona
We had a lovely time, the shepherd's hut has a great view over the Devon countryside. Our hosts were welcoming and even prepared the fire before our arrival. Very much recommended.
24/04/2016Tom
Our stay was absolutely perfect! 2 nights at the hut, as part of our 7 day road trip of the south coast. Beautifully secluded off the beaten track. Sian was lovely and welcoming - and just left us to it. Plenty of nice walks around the area. Ide village has a couple of awesome pubs. We had lunch at The Poachers Inn - amazing. Fire pit and well stocked wood shed to keep the fire going all night. Also electric in the hut which we really weren't expecting - added bonus. Would recommend to anyone looking for a quiet couple of nights out of the way.
10/08/2015Tom
We had a wonderful stay on the Shepherds hut. It was peaceful and romantic, cooking on the open fire pit was lovely and fortunately we had fantastic weather! Comfy bed and Sian was helpful recommending resturants for us. I would highly recommend for a break away from it all!
30/07/2015Harriet
We really enjoyed the beautiful location of the hut. It was wonderful to sit by the fire pit and reflect on the view across the valley. Being able to walk to the farm was a plus too.
28/07/2015Tom
Amazing stay. Perfect location, lovely farm, great for a romantic getaway. I could not recommend it more.

We enjoyed the rolling hills, the dawn chorus and feeling one with nature.

"We loved our stay in the shepherds hut which was just perfect in every respect for a relaxing weekend away. There is something very appealing about cooking your dinner over an open fire in the middle of a beautiful secluded orchard and then crawling into a proper warm comfy bed! Everyone at the farm was incredibly friendly and made us feel very welcome."
03/08/2014Constanze
"We loved our stay, it was peaceful, we were left to our devices and the hut was beautiful. It was an experience that we'd love to repeat."
10/04/2014Ray
"We absolutely loved it! Harriet was welcoming from the moment we arrived, the hut was beautiful, the farm was a lovely setting, we ate at The Huntsman which was great, and we spent time in Haldon Forest as it was so close. Best things... the scrambled eggs were incredible, seeing the piglets was great, the hut itself was gorgeous! Worst thing... our fire-lighting skills!"
04/04/2014Victoria
"We absolutely loved our stay. The hut was beautiful, simple and spotless. The owners were lovely and very helpful and even enabled my husband to accomplish a wish off his life to do list with driving a tractor. Have told everyone about our weekend and didn't want to come home when our stay was over. It was heaven in a field."
06/09/2013Elizabeth
"We really enjoyed our stay in the Old Orchard Shepherd's Hut. It was a peaceful location and the cabin was charming, cosy and just as we expected it to be from the pictures. We were really well taken care of and left to enjoy the farm and surroundings as we wished. I've recommended this to all my friends as a great escape."

"We absolutely loved staying at the Shepherd's Hut. It was the perfect little getaway, in a very secluded location and beautifully decorated. We were made to feel very welcome by the host and would not hesitate to recommend to anyone looking for camping with a difference."
11/08/2013Amy
"Loved it. We have stayed in a shepherd's hut before, and enjoy the added luxury of sleeping in a bed yet still being able to enjoy the camping greats of cooking on a fire or stove. The location is great and Kate and Andy are very friendly."
24/07/2013Sara
"We really enjoyed the stay - we didn't expect to arrive and to be completely secluded, looking out into Devon hills, or for the cabin to be as comfortable and well kitted out as it was. The people who run the farm are lovely - you are left to it completely, apart from being visited by sheep and cows (from behind a fence...). It's a beautiful part of the world."
15/07/2013Cara
"Thoroughly loved our stay. It was the perfect escape from work, home and general life. We cooked our supper on the open fire and spent the evenings enjoying each others company and playing the various board games provided. The Old Orchard Shepherd's Hut was the perfect place to enjoy the great outdoors with the comfort of a lovely double bed and a wood burning stove. Perfection."
28/06/2013Vicki
"Stop searching! If you are a couple this place is amazing. At the end of a windy country lane, surrounded by fields of buttercups and dozing calves, is the old shepherds hut. The hut comes with beautiful attention to detail and a comfortable bed. We wanted to just relax after a very hectic month and on the first night we slept for fifteen hours! The dawn chorus is spectacular and you can roast marshmallows on the fire no problems. There are no other campers and so the spot is perfect for ultimate seclusion. The shower is very hot and there is even a nod to luxury in the Neil's yard hand soap...very nice! We had our tandem with us and so we spent a lot of time along the river path visiting pubs and watching birds among the water. This would be the perfect spot for cyclists, walkers or just those looking to get away... Think novelist or artist! What a spot. Don't hesitate!"

Such a beautiful and special experience. My boyfriend is not normally particularly outdoorsy but he was transformed on this holiday! It had the perfect amount of comfort combined with wildness. So beautiful and everything so well thought through. Thank you so much!

We loved staying here. Compact, with everything we needed; simple, elegant, stylish. Lovely grounds and surroundings to enjoy from our fireside.

It was a really lovely stay, very tranquil & relaxing. Loved hearing all the birds & cows. Shepards hut clean & tidy and just perfect. Staff on the farm all very lovely too! Thank you

A beautifully peaceful plot, the sheppards hut was superb and the additional kitchen and bathroom buildings were well equipped and clean. A great spot to get away from it all with great walks, beautiful views and just a shiort walk away from welcoming local pubs.

we had a very chilled time here. lots of simple pleasures. walks, blackberry picking, fires, early nights, eating in the little kitchen. such an enchanting spot, amazingly good farm shop

There is something very appealing about cooking your dinner over an open fire in the middle of a beautiful secluded orchard and then crawling into a proper warm comfy bed! Everyone at the farm was incredibly friendly and made us feel very welcome."

"Loved it. We have stayed in a shepherd's hut before, and enjoy the added luxury of sleeping in a bed yet still being able to enjoy the camping greats of cooking on a fire or stove. The location is great and Kate and Andy are very friendly."
