Overview
This is true seclusion. As if being all alone in the incredible peace of an eight-acre private woodland wasn’t enough, you even have a bridge to step over that separates you and the rest of the world. Once you’ve strolled over and into your floating cabin, you can take in the incredible views, maybe fire up the BBQ or run the bath, and completely relax. If you’re quiet, the wildlife of the woodland will pass by the deck and you can watch the foxes, deer and badgers as they forage below you. You have a fully-equipped kitchen as well as the BBQ and, to complete the indoor/outdoor living, a shower out on the deck. The king-size bed, like the rest of the wagon, was lovingly handcrafted by owner Matt, a skilled woodworker and tree surgeon. He and Amanda have designed Woodman's Wagon to whisk you away from modern life for a few days of natural relaxation. The moment you’re sitting on the deck, with views all the way to the Exe estuary and even out to sea, you know they’ve got it right.
The quiet of the forest and the tranquil bath will be enough to keep you happy for a few days, but you can always work up an appetite for all that soaking by exploring the lovely part of Devon around you. Haldon Forest Park is great for a stroll, a gentle cycle or a picnic, but there are tougher trails and massive hikes on Dartmoor, along the coastal path, or down the Exe estuary. Canoes and paddleboards can be hired nearby and the beach at Dawlish Warren isn’t far off. There are farm shops to discover if you’re eating in, the Orange Elephant ice cream parlour for a delicious treat and plenty of places for dinner if you don’t feel like cooking. The Riverford Farm Field Kitchen and a host of lovely pubs are within easy reach, most notably The Ley Arms, in Kenn, a one-mile walk partly through the woods, so you can have a great pub meal and wander back to your forest retreat by torchlight.

Outdoor & active
Visit the Yew Tree in St Andrew's Churchyard at Kenn which claims to be one of the oldest in the country. Apparently some experts believe the gnarled hollow tree could be close to two thousand years old and potentially predates Christianity itself.
Explore Haldon Forest Park where you can enjoy a quiet stroll and a picnic or hire out bikes or segways if preferred.
The sweeping sands of Dawlish Warren and the open expanse of Dartmoor are both nearby. There are numerous cycling and walking trails in the area and Exeter itself is just a few miles away to the east.
You can hire a bike from Saddles and Paddles in Exeter and cycle along the river and canal right down to The Turf Locks about 5 miles away avoiding any roads. Or go no further than the Double Locks, another good pub on the edge of Exeter. Saddles and Paddles also hire out canoes and kayaks (hence the name) and offer basic tuition if you've never canoed before.
Or swing through the trees at Go Ape! Haldon Forest with two incredible zip slides offering amazing views over Dartmoor.
Places to visit
Powderham Castle is about a mile away, located in a unique, picturesque setting beside the Exe estuary. Housing over six hundred years worth of history as one of England's oldest family homes, there is plenty to explore both inside and out, situated in the centre of a deer park home to around 600 fallow deer. They hold concerts and events and you can even try out Yoga in front of the fire in the great hall.
Dartmoor National Park is only 5 miles away and great to explore. There are other National Trust places worth visiting close by such as Killerton and Castle Drogo.
The Bicton Park Botanical Gardens span nearly 300 years of horticultural history set in East Devon's picturesque Otter Valley. There are also the RHS gardens at Rosemoor.
Exeter is only a 15 minute drive away and has a magnificent cathedral. Also worth touring are Exeter's Underground Passages that date back to 14th Century with tours available, along with many other historic sites and lots of shopping.

Absolutely wonderful

We had a beautiful time in the treehouse for my husbands 60th Birthday.Off grid cabin surrounded by woodland and rolling hills.Peace and quiet and solitude from the outside world watching nature from an amazing viewing deck .In the evenings,we had the firepit roaring, glass of red in hand! We visited quirky Totnes and did the round Robin which included a steam train ride with great views of the coastline and a cruise along the river Dart which was really interesting and we were even lucky enough to see some seals! On returning, we fired up the water heater the old fashioned way with wood and kindling and had a wonderful bath overlooking the greenery from the big window and then fell into the most comfy bed ever!...Lovely stay and would highly recommend!

We had a very relaxing stay at the Woodmans Wagon. It was in a lovely setting away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Listening to nature all around you is both relaxing and fulfilling, it feels like you have gone on a retreat. Getting to spend time as a couple instead of being a parent or carer for an elderly member of your family is essential as you can come back relaxed, invigorated and clear of mind. Truly an experience I would not of wanted to miss and will definitely be booking again.
11/09/2023David
One of the most wonderful experiences we have had for a long time! Everything about the stay was just perfect and it ticked all the right boxes! We left feeling recharged, refreshed and relaxed. The wagon was beautifully made and the surroundings were stunning. Matt the owner was very friendly
03/08/2023Chris
Such a beautiful setting - we had the most relaxing time, long lazy baths gazing at the view, toasting crumpets on the fire and wrapping up warm to enjoy the campfire.
07/04/2023Julie
Matt the host was very helpful and nice, we would be able to reach him if we needed anything. The place was breath taking, full of life, very secluded, relaxing like a fairy tale. The wagon was very clean and cosy and had everything we needed. To appreciate better you just need to be in silence, so you can take everything in. We did yoga and meditation on the deck, we did a fire on the Indian firepit. Was lovely to hear the sound of all the animals, to see the sheeps, deers, cows etc and hear the tree shaking and the winds. That place is magical and we would like to go back. The view was breath taking and you can really feel the love and connection with nature.
03/04/2023Marta
We found this break away a complete 'time out' from all the hub up of our 'normal' life. It's the sort of abode we would aspire to live as a new 'normal'. It really makes you consider what you really need to call home & to live in a more eco friendly way. The natural environment amongst the woodland, with the canopy of trees, with an opening for the stars at night, the creatures that dwell there & appreciating the wellness that gives to the frazzled soul. Absolutely loved this place. Matt & Amanda were perfect hosts. There at the beginning of the adventure & left us to our own devices but softly aware of them if we needed them. Perfect construction of craftsmanship & thoughtfulness to nature, as well as the guests sharing it. Simple but majestic.
17/10/2022SARAH
Wonderful stay, the cabin had everything we needed and such a beautiful location and the cabin itself was beautiful.
16/09/2022Philip
We had an idyllic 3 nights at the wagon. Matt met us upon our arrival and showed us how everything worked. The outside shower was a quirky but brilliant concept.
26/08/2022John
Totally peaceful and private, a real get away from it all. Variable weather allowed us to have a bbq in the blazing sun, lighting the log burner as raining and chilly, bathing with the most amazing view and the sheer novelty of an outside shower. We absolutely loved our stay and left with a feeling of having totally relaxed on our break
18/07/2022Jan
Absolutely magnificent. Back to nature but with the necessary amount of creature comforts. The sun deck is fabulous. We never left the cabin ( apart from meal at Ley Arms) in 3 days. The privacy and solitude was liberating. Inspiring work by Matt. Never forget it.
10/06/2022susanna
From the moment Amanda met us it felt like we were going somewhere special...the fact we had to follow someone to our destination made it feel all the more remote. Driving across the field full of sheep and cows to our own private ‘wood island’ with such amazing views put such a HUGE smile on my face, the woods themselves filled with the scent of bluebells was gorgeous, all of this just added to the winding walk through the woods till we could finally see our home for the next few days. It was simply and beautiful set up. The bed was beautiful and comfortable, the bath with those views was sublime and the shower was completely liberating...the whole pace of life made for a perfect escape.
06/05/2022Nicky
We really enjoyed or stay in the woodmans wagon. It has been completed to a very high standard with everthing you could need provided. The setting in the woods is beautiful and the local wildlife charming. Plenty of nice walks in the surrounding area but the wagon is so comfortable we did not want to leave. A soak in the bath was heavenly.
01/10/2021Kate
We had a wonderful stay here, the whole setting was fantastic and beautiful. Very peaceful. The wagon we stayed in was gorgeous, very cosy and well-designed. We had everything we needed and lots of peace and quiet. But also close to some nice pubs and restaurants.
20/09/2021Richard
We've stayed at three places from C & Stars now and this was easily our favourite. The wagon/treehouse is so beautifully built and maintained. Unlike the previous places we've stayed this truly felt secluded, being encamped in our own private woodland. The privacy and cosiness was unparalleled and having a bath overlooking the view and stargazing on the deck are experiences we'll never forget
27/08/2021joel
Arriving at Woodman’s Wagon Treehouse was just jaw dropping, being led through the ancient woodland that it’s set in is paradise in itself and then you see the cabin nestled in the trees and it’s just perfect in every way. From the beautiful smoky scent to the sounds of nature, everything about this place is peaceful. The view from the deck all across the rolling fields take your vision right out to sea, it’s incredible. We couldn’t have asked for more, it was everything we wanted.

We had a brilliant time. We chose to stay over our wedding/honeymoon and was a perfect way to unwind. Matt was very welcoming and allowed us to check in earlier than normal which was very much appreciated.

Our stay at the Woodman's Wagon Treehouse was incredible - it is such a special place and is tonic for the soul. Thoroughly thoroughly recommend.

It was fantastic, we fully recharged our batteries and loved everything about our stay. Matt and Amanda were lovely hosts and even provided a bottle of bubbles to celebrate our honeymoon. The wagon is truly secluded and a tranquil heaven to relax in.

We had a fabulous stay here for our mini-moon - the setting is idyllic, in the middle of an ancient woodland and surrounded by wildlife. The treehouse itself is beautifully crafted and cosy, with a gorgeous view from the decking. We had a very warm welcome from Matt, who kindly escorted us from the Ley Arms, and they very generously left us a bottle of champagne to celebrate our honeymoon! There are a lot of things to do around the area (can highly recommend the riverford field kitchen - make sure you book well in advance), but it was equally enjoyable to sit in the bath or on the decking and watch nature, or snuggle up by the woodburner while it was raining. We felt very relaxed by the end of our short stay! Many thanks to Matt and Amanda for creating such a wonderful retreat.

We had a wonderful few days in this woodland hideaway. We had made various reservations but cancelled most to enjoy chilling out on the deck in the beautiful weather and using the local shop and pub.

A wonderful and magical stay in a completely secluded location. Very comfortable and well equipped wagon, we loved every second of it and felt emotional leaving this slow life!

If you want to escape to a beautifully designed treehouse within a private woodland and be given the gift of time to appreciate the small things then this is the place for you! Listening to the birds with the gorgeous view from every window was bliss. Matt could not have been a more accommodating host. We loved chatting to him about his creation. This stay exceeding our expectations. We fully recommend the local pub The Ley Arms which served fantastic food! Thank you for having us!

Beautiful luxury glamping experience. Really quirky cabin, it felt like living in a movie set!

We had the most wonderful stay at the Woodman’s Cabin. It’s been designed beautifully. Such a romantic spot to hide away. We loved working for the hot bath. Was so worth it. We are already planning another visit for the future. Thanks Amanda and Matt you did a great job!

Such a lovely warm welcome from owner Matt and well informed prior to setting off by Amanda. Together they have created a beautiful, off the grid and private glamping spot. Although weather was not on our side over our stay we were still able to enjoy the outdoors, a hot bath with breathtaking views each morning and cosy indoor snuggles! There’s everything you need in the wagon for a comfortable stay. We will be back to visit (hoping to enjoy summer weather next time). We really didn’t want to leave!

We're super excited to be adding Matt & Amanda's latest space. A wonderful addition to the collection. The feedback for Orchard Wagon should give you a good feel for what it will be like. Book a stay and be the first to write a review!

We had a wonderful off grid stay at Amanda and Matt's Treehouse . It was lovely to meet both of them and Amanda gave us a very warm welcome . A great place to unwind and enjoy nature on our doorstep . We loved the recycled furniture and portholes . Everything was well thought out including the outside space with shower. The Harvest Super Moon during our stay was an added bonus .

One of the most wonderful experiences we have had for a long time! Everything about the stay was just perfect and it ticked all the right boxes! We left feeling recharged, refreshed and relaxed. The wagon was beautifully made and the surroundings were stunning. Matt the owner was very friendly

Such a beautiful setting - we had the most relaxing time, long lazy baths gazing at the view, toasting crumpets on the fire and wrapping up warm to enjoy the campfire.

We had an idyllic 3 nights at the wagon. Matt met us upon our arrival and showed us how everything worked. The outside shower was a quirky but brilliant concept.

Absolutely magnificent. Back to nature but with the necessary amount of creature comforts. The sun deck is fabulous. We never left the cabin ( apart from meal at Ley Arms) in 3 days. The privacy and solitude was liberating. Inspiring work by Matt. Never forget it.

We had a wonderful stay here, the whole setting was fantastic and beautiful. Very peaceful. The wagon we stayed in was gorgeous, very cosy and well-designed. We had everything we needed and lots of peace and quiet. But also close to some nice pubs and restaurants.
