Overview
You follow the road to Orchard Wagon so deep into the countryside that it literally runs out, the tarmac stopping at the door of owners Matt & Amanda’s cottage. Behind their house and hidden by the trees at the top of the orchard is your private camp, made up of three unique creations. The Shepherd’s hut is your bedroom and lounge, with an armchair and a gateleg table making flexible use of the space, plus a kettle for making morning tea without having to leave the bed, which Matt carved from chestnut coppiced in their own woodland.
Just outside you’ll find the field kitchen, which is on wheels from an old chicken coop and still isn’t your most fun cooking option. Its gas hobs are handy, but a true outdoor chef will love getting the fire going and hanging the dutch oven off the tripod over glowing coals. While one of you gets dinner going, the other can be firing up the wood-burner that heats the unbeatable bath with a view. The bathing hut, where you’ll also find the compost loo off to one side, is decked out with brass portholes and lighting from an old cruise ship and you can soak up views of hills unspoilt by even a single pylon or powerline.
If you sit quietly, Orchard Wagon and its peaceful surroundings will provide all the entertainment you need. Badgers, deer, barn owls, bats and foxes all call the woods home and might even pass by as you bathe. If you feel like exploring a bit further, Dartmoor is half an hour an away and you’re right on the Exe estuary, where you can hire bikes or kayaks and glide along taking in the views of the broad channel. You can stop to refuel at anything from riverside pubs to fine restaurants, or treat yourself to the unique experience of catching a boat out to the floating River Exe Cafe, which you definitely need to book in advance. Retreating back to Orchard Wagon to sit by the fire and watch the stars in the unspoilt sky makes the perfect end to the day, whether you’ve been adventuring or just lounging in the shade of the trees.
Experience the joy of e-biking this summer! From 15th July - 16th September, The Wood Life will be offering two e-bikes for hire and is also part of our Green Travel collection. Visit the Yew Tree in St Andrew's Churchyard at Kenn which claims to be one of the oldest in the country. Apparently some experts believe the gnarled hollow tree could be close to two thousand years old and potentially predates Christianity itself.
Explore Haldon Forest Park where you can enjoy a quiet stroll and a picnic or hire out bikes or segways if preferred.
The sweeping sands of Dawlish Warren and the open expanse of Dartmoor are both nearby. There are numerous cycling and walking trails in the area and Exeter itself is just a few miles away to the east.
You can hire a bike from Saddles and Paddles in Exeter and cycle along the river and canal right down to The Turf Locks about 5 miles away avoiding any roads. Or go no further than the Double Locks, another good pub on the edge of Exeter. Saddles and Paddles also hire out canoes and kayaks (hence the name) and offer basic tuition if you've never canoed before.
Or swing through the trees at Go Ape! Haldon Forest with two incredible zip slides offering amazing views over Dartmoor.
Places to visit
Powderham Castle is about a mile away, located in a unique, picturesque setting beside the Exe estuary. Housing over six hundred years worth of history as one of England's oldest family homes, there is plenty to explore both inside and out, situated in the centre of a deer park home to around 600 fallow deer. They hold concerts and events and you can even try out Yoga in front of the fire in the great hall.
Dartmoor National Park is only 5 miles away and great to explore. There are other National Trust places worth visiting close by such as Killerton and Castle Drogo.
The Bicton Park Botanical Gardens span nearly 300 years of horticultural history set in East Devon's picturesque Otter Valley. There are also the RHS gardens at Rosemoor.
Exeter is only a 15 minute drive away and has a magnificent cathedral. Also worth touring are Exeter's Underground Passages that date back to 14th Century with tours available, along with many other historic sites and lots of shopping.

What can I say... the Orchard Wagon truly is a slice of paradise! From making campfires to exploring the beautiful countryside, this is truly the best place to switch off and recharge. Amanda was so lovely and we had the best time. This was also ideal as we do not drive, so being a short taxi from Exeter station was amazing. Could not recommend the Orchard Wagon enough - we can't wait to come back and stay in the Treehouse next time!
27/05/2024Hannah
We had a brilliant weekend stay at the Orchard Wagon. From the minute we arrived we didn’t stop smiling. Amanda welcomed us warmly and showed as around. It was a beautiful location, it was so quiet and green and beautiful. We loved cooking in the open fire and the best part of all without a doubt was the wood fired bath experience looking out on to the fields - just WOW! It really was the perfect getaway weekend for us. Can’t wait to come back.
17/05/2024Caroline
Great place - totally lived up to expectation
03/05/2024Daniel
Our stay at the orchard wagon was just what we needed. As a young couple it completely allowed us to disconnect from our phones and enjoy what was around. The cabin was lovely and Amanda made us feel very welcome when showing us around. It had more than we could’ve wished for and overall allowed us to have a very enjoyable, relaxing anniversary stay.
01/05/2024Elicia
We couldn't have asked for a better place to stay! The perfect excuse to disconnect, to slow down and to reconnect (with nature, with ourselves, and with each other).
12/04/2024Carolina
We had such a wonderful stay with Amanda at the Orchard Wagon. A perfect getaway in the truest sense of the word. Amanda was a very warm and welcoming host, she clearly has thought through the guest experience brilliantly as there was not a thing I would change. This was our first Canopy & Stars experience and it certainly won't be our last!
18/03/2024Tate
This place is near-perfect for a weekend retreat. The wood-fired bath is brilliant, the view is magical and the space has everything you need within reach whilst still feeling simple and minimal. The perfect place to relax, restore and also indulge in simple luxuries. Thank you Amanda, such a friendly welcoming host!
06/10/2023Catie
We enjoyed every minute of our heavenly stay at Orchard Wagon. For us, to be able to be so immersed in the beautiful landscape and nature but also to have luxurious comfort (e.g. the wood fired bath) made it the best holiday ever. We loved the design of the huts and facilities and the local walks.
06/09/2023Monica
A lovely break in a super peaceful location.
28/08/2023Shaun
Idyllic location and very friendly welcome from excellent hosts, who left us to do out thing. The bed was comfortable and having a dip in the wood fired bath was lovely. Just far enough away from civilisation to be tranquil, but near enough for us to enjoy some fun days out and fabulous food.
09/08/2023Dale
Very enjoyable; Amanda was a very welcoming and accommodating host. The composting wc and chopping our own firewood were new experiences.
03/07/2023David

We had a very relaxing, peaceful, easygoing couple of days in lovely accomodation and beautiful surroundings.
02/04/2023Katy
We really enjoyed having a bath looking out over the nearby field and hills. In addition to this Amanda the host was really friendly and helpful. I also enjoyed creating campfires and using the wood burner to heat hot water. The place is approx half an hours drive from a lot of good locations. Overall it was a superb holiday. Normally, we don't spend a lot of our non-sleeping time at our holiday accommodation. Orchard Wagon was so lovely that we did!
09/09/2022Neil
We had a wonderful stay in the Orchard Wagon. The location was beautiful and peaceful and the wagons were both well-appointed. We loved the bath with the gorgeous view and the feeling of being at one with nature. We could hear owls and foxes at night and watched some beautiful sunsets over the orchard. Amanda’s recommendations were very helpful.
08/08/2022Lilly
It was completely wonderful. Everything we had hoped for and more - great views, comfy bed, everything spick and span. And that bath! Utter heaven.
25/05/2022Jinni
We stayed for two nights at the end of September, very lucky with the weather but at orchard wagon it doesn’t matter what the weather is doing it’s the perfect stay rain or shine.

We loved our stay at the Orchard Wagon - the best shepherd’s hut we’ve stayed in (and we’ve stayed in a few!)
11/06/2021Richard

Didn’t want to leave. Such a lovely place, lovely wagon and lovely hosts!
14/09/2020Megan
My sister and I only get to catch up very seldom and we try to make a walking weekend of it when we do. The Orchard Wagon was the perfect setting for downtime after some hefty walks. We loved the location, the aesthetic and the amazing view from the bath! The attention to detail on the shepherd’s hut itself was really charming and we had everything we needed to make it comfortable and cosy.
11/09/2020Naomi
Lovely weekend at the wagon. The bath wagon was amazing, beautiful views over the countryside and we had the perfect weather for it. Bed is really comfy and the area is nice and private. Lovely pub down the road for evening meals too. Really friendly hosts and the place was well thought out and finished very well. Would love to return soon
07/08/2020Katy
We stayed for two nights at the Orchard Wagon and had a wonderful time! It was in the most idyllic location with beautiful views of the countryside. A little slice of heaven!
20/07/2020Camilla
On arrival we were meet by the lovely Amanda and Matt They showed us how everything worked and supplied us with with tea and coffee and our toiletries. Showed us the local map and pointed out a few walks. Local pub were very friendly and served amazing food . The time we spent at orchard wagon was peaceful and relaxing ,watching the birds ,field mice and on an evening the bats .Going back to basics making fires cooking out side was a pleasure. And taking a bath overlooking the meadow was magical. It truly was an amazing experience and we came away feeling rested ,which we really needed as we are one of the lucky ones who have been able to work through covid 19 . Just perfect
10/07/2020Alison
Wonderful weekend away at Orchard Wagon with a typically varied set of weather conditions thrown at us. The cabin was very easy to get cosy when it was raining and the separate bathroom cabin with wood burner was amazing. Cooking outside at this time of year is perhaps a touch ambitious, but perfectly doable. It's also a good excuse to be able to sample some of the great local pubs. Great proximity to Exeter and the moors. Amanda was a lovely host and very patient with us arriving late due to my poor navigating!
01/11/2019Jules
We had a wonderful stay at Orchard Wagon. Amanda was really friendly and gave us some great recommendations to explore the local area.
11/09/2019Rebecca
We really enjoyed our stay at the Orchard Wagon! It was exactly what we were hoping for and it did not disappoint. The location and setting was so relaxing and the hut was rustic but functional! Cooking dinner on the open flames and having an evening bath looking at the view were some key highlights!
30/08/2019Ashley
BEAUTIFUL!!! Having a bubble buth, whilst looking out the window, seeing the milky way and a few shooting stars, is an amazing experience! The owners were lovely, very kind and helpful.
28/08/2019Jon
It was absolutely lovely.
26/08/2019Hannah
We thoroughly enjoyed our break, the camp was clean and well set out. We loved the quirky bathroom. The views made for a relaxing few days.
12/08/2019Alison
Orchard Wagon is honestly amazing, we loved every minute of our stay, it was so relaxing and peaceful. The location was great because we had access to so many different towns also Matt and Amanda were so welcoming from the second we arrived, while still giving you your privacy. Our favourite part about the trip was the location, the bathroom and our next door neighbours (the cows) Everything that we needed was there the only thing we bought was food. Overall I would recommend both Orchard Wagon and Canopy & Stars to both family and friends and will 100% go back and stay again.
19/07/2019Sydney Anne
It was beautiful comfy, pretty. Amanda the host was bloody great! She was funny and she waited up for us to get there because we came late. I loved everything about it!
05/07/2019Chantelle
Very welcoming hosts and a beautiful retreat to relax in peace and tranquility. Matt and Amanda have thought of everything, and the quality of the facilities is top notch. I wish I had booked for longer but I will definitely be going back for another visit!

What an amazing place! Matt and Amanda were wonderful hosts and they have managed to turn the wagon into a sanctuary. We had such a restful stay. What's fantastic is that once you've arrived, you don't need to go anywhere else. You've got amazing walking right there with views for days and all other needed amenities. Would love to return in summer! A must do if you want to explore the Devon area.

We absolutely loved our stay and were immediately welcomed by our lovely host, Amanda. The location was so quiet and beautiful and the bath really is incredible. The wagon itself was cosy and warm and cooking on the fire outside made us feel very relaxed.

Very happy to leave the first review, this place is amazing! Perfect location, we were lucky enough to have snow and glorious sunshine so everything looked gorgeous. Matt and Amanda are wonderful hosts, so friendly and they make you feel incredibly welcome. They’ve thought of everything and nothing was too much trouble. The wagon was lovely and cozy, and the bathing wagon was equally as impressive. Everything was perfect and I would highly recommend, and to save yourselves from having a domestic in the car trying to find the place, just type “Thornton Cottage” into Google Maps - it’ll save you a headache!

We couldn't have asked for a better place to stay! The perfect excuse to disconnect, to slow down and to reconnect (with nature, with ourselves, and with each other).

A lovely break in a super peaceful location.

Idyllic location and very friendly welcome from excellent hosts, who left us to do out thing. The bed was comfortable and having a dip in the wood fired bath was lovely. Just far enough away from civilisation to be tranquil, but near enough for us to enjoy some fun days out and fabulous food.

Very enjoyable; Amanda was a very welcoming and accommodating host. The composting wc and chopping our own firewood were new experiences.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Orchard Wagon! It was exactly what we were hoping for and it did not disappoint. The location and setting was so relaxing and the hut was rustic but functional! Cooking dinner on the open flames and having an evening bath looking at the view were some key highlights!

BEAUTIFUL!!! Having a bubble buth, whilst looking out the window, seeing the milky way and a few shooting stars, is an amazing experience! The owners were lovely, very kind and helpful.

It was beautiful comfy, pretty. Amanda the host was bloody great! She was funny and she waited up for us to get there because we came late. I loved everything about it!
