Overview
The Piggery is a laidback sort of place where unwinding will come to you without the slightest effort. A trip to the glorious hillside sauna is included in the stay and is a wonderful way to relax, particularly when followed by a dip in the cool waters of the natural swimming pond…
The Piggery lets you live as wild as you want. There's everything you need inside, but the firepit or the pond jetty make wonderful places for picnics and late-night stargazing under the skies of a Dark Sky Reserve. There's also the notable feature of an outdoor four poster bed, crafted from a fallen tree, where floating in a sea of wildflowers you can take an incredible afternoon nap. There are also wood-fired outdoor baths, a range of wellness treatments, meals that can be ordered onsite and creative activities you can arrange as part of your stay.
Owners Tom (who also happens to be co-founder of Canopy & Stars) and Vashti offer artist residencies as part of Southcombe Arts, host wellbeing days for local refugee groups, as well as giving over some of their land to the local school for weekly forest sessions. The plan is to welcome as many people as they can to benefit from this landscape, while carefully preserving it for future generations and the birds, bees and butterflies they share it with today. There’s more than meets the eye here, and with so many other offerings onsite – this isn’t just a getaway, it’s an experience.

Meet your hosts
Meet Vashti and Tom
Tom is co-founder of Canopy & Stars and so even their daughters have probably already had what most people would consider a lifetime of stays in cabins and treehouses. Vashti is a curator and runs Southcombe Arts as a community arts space and artist residency venue.
In 2019, the family left Bristol and moved to Devon, with the aim of setting up a wellbeing retreat. Having sold their house in Bristol and not having found the right patch of land to create a new home, they lived on an ex Canopy & Stars bus in a friends field for a few months. They then found a house and started creating their retreat at Southcombe Barn.
Wildlife & environment
They have deer living on the land, and also an owl, but there's some much biodiversity throughout with an interesting mix of fauna and flora. The wildflower garden is a haven for bees, birds and butterflies. The ancient woodland is where you'll most likely see the deer (if you're lucky). On the pasture it's highly likely during your stay (but not always) that you'll see pedigree Dartmoor ponies.

Wonderful place, a true retreat in gorgeous surroundings. Lovely warm, cozy space. The pond, grounds and sauna are very very special. It’s a wonderful place to be away from the demands of the working week.
22/01/2025Katy
Was an amazing winter getaway!! The hosts offered great recommendations and the sauna was lovely.
17/01/2025Savannah
It was wonderful! The accommodation was stunning and it was our first time in Dartmoor. We used it as a quick escape from London and we both felt so rested afterwards - a combination of the beautiful accommodation and countryside, the helpful owners Tom and Vashti and the fact we were surrounded my carpet of snow! The lack of signal and WiFi also massively helped.
10/01/2025Kate
We booked our stay for our 10yr anniversary which became our engagement weekend. Tom was incredibly helpful and a wonderful host!
13/12/2024Sam
We had a lovely stay over 2 nights and thought it was perfect. It was great being so out in nature and having no wifi made for a great getaway. The piggery was well equipped with everything we would need and the sauna was perfect. Tom and Vashti were very welcoming and gave us tips of where to eat and where to walk. We enjoyed our stay very much and would love to stay again.
29/11/2024Hazel
We had an amazing stay at the Piggery! Vashti and Tom were very friendly and welcoming, the location was beautiful and the Piggery was so cosy with a lovely rustic aesthetic. Very clear instructions on how to get there and checking in was very smooth.
06/09/2024Imogen
We had a fabulous stay at the Southcombe Piggery. Our hosts were incredibly generous and welcoming. The location is excellent for enjoying the charm of Widecombe in the Moor and for setting off on Dartmoor hikes.
26/07/2024Beth
We had a wonderful stay, thank you. The setting was perfect, in the beautiful grounds with easy access to some fantastic walks and the local village. The piggery felt very private, was wonderfully peaceful and equipped with everything we needed. The sauna was a fantastic experience - what a view!
05/07/2024Emma
Like stepping into a fairytale, our stay at the piggery exceeded our expectations. The setting was dreamy, our accommodation had everything we could have hoped for and more, and our hosts were beyond generous.
01/07/2024danae
We had a wonderful couple of days, very relaxing and grounding. The location is beautiful the Piggery well laid out and the hosts friendly and welcoming.
22/05/2024Sue
This is one of the most wonderful places I stayed. Vashti and Tom are very welcoming and generous hosts, offering the extension of their home to visitors to explore. Uniqueness and wildness of the place contributes to the unforgettable experience I had. From apothecary, amazing woodland garden to sauna, crystal clear pond and studio ready to be used. My mind is still going back to this amazing space, and I believe it will for a while.
10/05/2024Adrianna
We had an amazing stay. Such a sympathetic renovation of the piggery… making it cosy and rustic all at once. The hosts were very friendly and helpful on arrrival.
29/03/2024Paul
We loved the piggery because it was off the beaten path, and nearby many amazing walks. The hosts were very friendly and accommodating, going out of their way to ensure we had a good stay. The piggery itself was beautifully decorated and everything was to a high standard including the shower, bed and log burner. We enjoyed the private garden and the highlight was the sauna and pond!!
16/02/2024Ollie
The Piggery is a fantastic place to stay. It’s the perfect place to escape to and use as a base to explore the surrounding areas. The information and recommendations that Tom&Vashti provided were spot on, and we ended up covering most of what they suggested - we had a brilliant time as a result! We also braved the cold and got in the spring fed pool on their land. This was a brilliant experience in the most beautiful and restful surroundings, particularly when followed up by a visit to the sauna. The views from the sauna are second to none. The lack of WiFi and signal was perfect for the escape we were aiming for, though it meant you had to be clever enough to load maps on sat nav before leaving etc, but caused us no real trouble when we went off exploring. Vashti could not have been more welcoming and helpful. We will 100% be back as we want to experience the place in a different season! Thank you so much Tom and Vashti!
09/02/2024Alexandra
It is a perfect sanctuary to retreat to, beautifully restored, with every detail thought about and styled with care. A place where every moment felt magical. Loved the wild sauna with its sumptuous views, and the clear spring fed pond to dive into for refreshing dips. Felt so alive and totally relaxed and left the piggery after just a couple days feeling like we'd had much longer. It was very difficult to leave. Loved our stay....❤️

23/10/2023Kay
Lovely stay- beautiful, nourishing, relaxing. All I'd hoped it would be.
04/09/2023Claire
We had such a lovely time. Tom and Vashti have created a beautiful space to escape from the day to day. Even though we had atrocious weather for part of the trip, we managed a perfectly balanced weekend away of cycling, hiking and wild swimming with the comforts of the wild spa (amazing sauna!), log fires, and fantastic feasting (Tom's local recommendations and the curry in a tiffin they provided). First holiday in a long time that we've both completely relaxed. I'm sure we'll be back.
04/08/2023Indu
We had a wonderful time at Southcombe Piggery. It is a truly magical place surrounded by wildflowers and beautiful views of Dartmoor. The owners were incredibly helpful, we loved the delicious curry they made on our first night and we're grateful for their tips on places to visit. We managed to fit in some lovely walks, even with the rainy weather and loved fe ling connected to nature in such a beautiful place.
31/07/2023Hannah
We absolutely loved our time at the piggery. The whole place from the accommodation itself to the wildflower gardens, woodland and the swimming pond, is stunning. The hosts are incredibly nice and helpful, offering us loads of useful suggestions whenever we asked them for something. The weather was not particularly idyllic but we were able to enjoy the beauty of the area and settle into the cosy space very easily. No phone signal anywhere nearby, which was actually lovely to be able to fully switch off from the outside world.
14/07/2023Calum
Absolutely beautiful place to stay - the Piggery was warm and cosy, whatever the weather, and it was amazing to have access to all of the outdoor space - the meadow and the pond were beautiful. The sauna and the baths were amazing experiences.
10/07/2023Nic
Southcombe Piggery was perfect for our weekend away, not only was the accommodation itself lovely, well-considered and nicely put together. The surrounding property was a delight to stroll around, and for further walking there are great hiking routes directly from the gate. Tom and Vashti were very welcoming and helpful throughout, and I can definitely recommend both the curry and the ice cream!
28/04/2023Oscar

I’m not normally one for superlatives, but this stay was fantastic. We were made to feel so welcome and the converted piggery was lovely, clean, cosy and private. Great access to the moors and in a lovely setting. The sauna was perfect!
17/12/2022Tom
Snuggly stay in a beautiful renovated stone piggery, misty moors, sauna and freezing plunges in the pond. Exactly perfect for a romantic weekend away.
02/12/2022Louise
Wonderful stay, the piggery is laid out perfectly for a couple of days away and Vashti and Tom were very helpful. The location is wonderful, so many walks you can do straight for the piggery and lots of lovely spots to eat close by. Especially loved the sauna at night with the stars!

Incredible place to stay with kind, considerate and very helpful people. What Vashti and Tom have created is everything you could ever want, outdoor beds and baths as well as a charming, converted piggery studio apartment and beautiful grounds. I surprised my partner with this stay for his birthday and requested some of the extras that Vashti and Tom offer and he absolutely loved it.
30/05/2022Beth
We had such a wonderful stay here - it's a truly magical place to be and we came away feeling totally inspired and refreshed!
13/05/2022skye
Vishta and Tom were unbelievably welcoming on our arrival. We had three nights booked at the Piggery and although we live very local, we were excited about the chance to relax in the peace of Dartmoor at a romantic location away from it all. We had the most magical holiday and the accommodation in the Piggery, plus the wild camping bed in the glade were beyond expectations. Everything was extremely clean, well presented and very comfortable. The wood fired baths were a once in a lifetime experience and it was stunning lying under the stars until late in to the evening.
06/05/2022Georgina
We really enjoyed our stay. It was just what we needed from a break away and our hosts were lovely. Very informative and welcoming but also gave us space to relax and made themselves available if we needed anything further.

Absolutely perfect stay, the location in the middle of the moor was ideal and we loved the fact that there was no phone signal! There were so many brilliant details: the outdoor beds, swimming pond and fire heated baths especially. The cabin itself was cosy and perfectly furnished - it had everything we needed and plenty of charm. It felt like the perfect size for a quick escape. Our hosts were also so lovely and thoughtful and really elevated the whole experience to a dream. They even had a hamper for our arrival!

Our stay at Southcombe Piggery was wonderful. Vashti and Tom are kind and attentive hosts and we're so grateful for the opportunity to spend time in the cosy and peaceful space they have created. The piggery and surrounds find a perfect balance between rustic and luxury, and it was lovely to return home from long walks on the moor and curl up by the fire. The fire baths under a clear evening sky were a real highlight and well worth braving the elements for!
11/03/2022Barney
Southcombe Piggery was everything we hoped it would be and more. We had the warmest of welcome and Tom really did take notice of what we needed. There was no pressure to be on the go at all. The mere fact that it was quiet, remote and without TV, Internet or phone connection, saw a significant drop in pace and a reconnection with each other and nature. The welcome basket, with local produce, the delicious curries and the meal at the Rugglestone Inn, were so delicious and way more than you bargained for. We had the most wonderful stay and will certainly be back for a longer stay. Thank you

Wonderfully relaxing stay We were reluctant to go out too far as the piggery was such a beautiful place to spend time to unwind The host was so welcome and helpful organising alternative option for a massage as Vashti was away Despite being February we were lucky enough to experience the wood fired baths which was a serene experience
21/02/2022Laura
The Southcombe Piggery was lovely with everything we needed. Really comfortable bed and great linen! We also used the baths, they take a while to get hot but were really magical under the stars.
18/02/2022Connie
Absolutely magical. Our accommodation hugely exceeded our expectations, feeling perfectly cosy and tucked away, yet stylish and spacious. Our hosts were wonderfully friendly and welcoming, with Vashti bringing us a luxury welcome hamper and Tom suggesting a fantastic wild swimming spot which ended our trip perfectly. Being able to access the moorland by foot from our hideaway was fantastic and so one of our days we headed for a long trek up into the moors, returning to a log fire and hot bath. The nearby Ashburton town was great for picking up foody bits and the Rugglestone Inn was a lovely traditional pub for dinner one evening, walking back to our bothy under a star lit sky.

A wonderfully simple and inviting bolthole, away from the pace and madness of everyday life, and beautifully hosted and kindly supported by the owners.
03/01/2022Gideon
We had the most magical stay at Southcombe piggery. We stargazed, enjoyed the local pubs, walked in the beautiful moors, sat in front of the log burning fire and escaped from the loudness of everyday life. We ended up staying 2 extra nights because we enjoyed it so much. It was a well needed rest and the most beautiful and welcoming place to be.
01/11/2021Dorothy
We had such a wonderful time in such a special part of the world. The piggery was scrupulously clean and so much attention to detail had been made. We often stay in cabins/huts/in the sticks(!) and this is one of the best places we’ve stayed. Despite the poor weather, we were still able to enjoy the peaceful surroundings and had an incredible meal in the Rugglestone Inn. We would definitely return, and have recommended to so many of our friends.

From the moment we were welcomed by Tom and Vashti we knew we had chosen the right location for our short break. From the hamper that was provided, to the warmth of their introduction, Southcombe Piggery had that unique, special feel. The room itself is cosy, beautifully finished and lovely and warm. The bed was exceptionally comfortable and the bathroom was fantastic. We opted for some treatments with Vashti and both were relaxing and helped re-charge the batteries. Location wise, the Piggery is perfect. Great for those wanting to get onto the moors and explore this beautiful part of Devon. We cannot wait to come back!

We had an amazing time at Southcombe Piggery. The Piggery itself was gorgeous, so cosy with everything you need for a relaxing break from a log burner to a bath. What made the stay even more magical was the outdoor four-poster bed which we stayed in for a few nights too. It was so special to be able to sleep under the stars and wake up with the sunrise. Tom & Vashti were incredible hosts, so welcoming and helpful. They were really happy to share lots of tips of amazing places to visit on Dartmoor which made our stay even more special. We would really recommend the curry made by Vashti and also booking in for a relaxing and healing gong bath! Thank you so much, we had a great time!

We had a lovely last minute mini break at the Piggery. Really enjoyed the location & quiet.

A really magical stay for our honeymoon - we absolutely loved the Piggery. We were lucky enough to stay in the outdoor bed as the weather was glorious and it was a night I'll never forget - the stars were stunning. I would definitely recommend the delicious home cooked curry and Vashti's soundbath experience. Everything was just really special - from exploring the grounds of Southcombe, to the lovely little welcome hamper we got on arrival. It felt like a really magical place, and one I didn't want to leave. The Piggery was also really beautifully decorated. Highly recommend!

The Piggery is a beautifully converted, cosy and nourishing space. We stayed for a week and ate in every evening (going out during the day) so had the opportunity to put the kitchen and living space to the test. It’s well equipped, the knives are sharp, the log burner is cosy, the bed is comfy and everything is perfectly proportioned. Oh and there’s no WiFi or mobile reception in the Piggery which is absolute bliss. We read, played board games, sketched, watched the fire, chatted, star gazed… Tom and Vashti are attentive and welcoming hosts, keen to make the stay as relaxing as possible. The yoga and massage with Debs was great, and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience of the gong bath with Vashti. The grounds of Southcombe are a delight to explore and I couldn’t get enough of the gentle magic of the lake / pond. We spent a relaxing afternoon up on the Moor Bed with rain falling around outside. We were sorry to leave…

We had an absolutely wonderful stay at Southcombe Piggery as part of our Devon honeymoon. Before arrival, we weren't sure what to expect as it was a completely new venture, but were blown away by the extremely comfortable and well equipped accomodation, beautiful surroundings and warm and attentive hosts. The Piggery itself is cosy with some luxurious features such as a roll top bath and log burner, which really add to the experience. There was also a welcome hamper with local produce that was a really thoughtful touch. During our stay we spent a night out on the moor bed, under the stars, which was loads of fun, as was cooking on the open fire in the camp below it, looking out over the valley and Dartmoor. Our hosts, Tom and Vashti also provided a delicious curry one night, organised for us to have massages and even provided a complimentary gong bath. They really did go above and beyond to make our stay the best it could be. All in all, we had a fantastic experience and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys the outdoors, but also likes the option of a bit of luxurious comfort on the side.

We're super excited to be adding Vashti and Tom's latest space. A wonderful addition to the collection. The feedback for Midsummer Meadow Bed should give you a good feel for what it will be like. Book a stay and be the first to write a review!

Wonderful place, a true retreat in gorgeous surroundings. Lovely warm, cozy space. The pond, grounds and sauna are very very special. It’s a wonderful place to be away from the demands of the working week.

We booked our stay for our 10yr anniversary which became our engagement weekend. Tom was incredibly helpful and a wonderful host!

We had an amazing stay at the Piggery! Vashti and Tom were very friendly and welcoming, the location was beautiful and the Piggery was so cosy with a lovely rustic aesthetic. Very clear instructions on how to get there and checking in was very smooth.

We had a fabulous stay at the Southcombe Piggery. Our hosts were incredibly generous and welcoming. The location is excellent for enjoying the charm of Widecombe in the Moor and for setting off on Dartmoor hikes.

We had a wonderful stay, thank you. The setting was perfect, in the beautiful grounds with easy access to some fantastic walks and the local village. The piggery felt very private, was wonderfully peaceful and equipped with everything we needed. The sauna was a fantastic experience - what a view!

We had an amazing stay. Such a sympathetic renovation of the piggery… making it cosy and rustic all at once. The hosts were very friendly and helpful on arrrival.

Absolutely beautiful place to stay - the Piggery was warm and cosy, whatever the weather, and it was amazing to have access to all of the outdoor space - the meadow and the pond were beautiful. The sauna and the baths were amazing experiences.
