Overview
You’ll spend a lot of time on the deck here, reaching for the binoculars that hang by the door to catch the swooping martins and other thriving wildlife. Or by the wood burner, with the kettle on and the sofa in bed mode, when you really want to kick back. The real bed is above the cab - a king-size double under a low ceiling that’s fine for the tall, but perhaps not for the suddenly waking. The horsebox is completely off-grid, so it might take a few minutes to heat the water, but there’s electric lighting and USB charge points run off solar panels that give plenty of power if used sensibly. Just down the bank, you’ll see Jennings, Martin Green’s sibling horsebox. No facilities are shared, but you might meet the other guests while you’re coming and going.
Where you’re coming from and going to will be a tough choice. At the Blue John caves you can explore a flooded mine by boat, while nearby Anchor Church caves have a beautiful wild swimming spot and a gory legend. For drier adventures, hit the canal towpath on a lovely ramble down to The Dragon pub for lunch, or get in touch with Greenwood Days for a course on natural woodworking. Whatever you get up to, you can raid the breweries of Burton on Trent, take a few fine ales back to the deck and watch the martins dart above the water as the sun goes down.

Essentials
The important stuff
- Check in: from 4 pm (owner prepared to offer earlier check in by prior arrangement)
- Check out: 10 am
- The horsebox is completely off-grid and because of this guests need to expect all the things that this entails, like a time delay to heat the water, perhaps a shorter shower experience than they would be used to at home, although the water will be nice and hot!
- Please bring torches and wellies
- The proximity of the river is extremely close therefore driving right up to the horsebox is off limits for the safety of guests. This is also why the minimum age for children is 6 years old.
- Please be aware that to reach the Dragon pub via the canal path there is initially a section of road without a pavement
- A fireguard is provided for guests when bringing children
- Mobile phone signal and 4G
- No WiFi
- Initial firewood is provided, extra is available to purchase at £10 per bag
- The site is also used for the owner's canoe hire business, and they do occasionally have bell tent / yurts on site, but there is plenty of space within the 2 acres to maintain privacy for all parties
- Please note whilst the horseboxes are set in a farmland setting with fabulous riverside views, the fields on the opposite side of the river are currently being worked for sand and gravel extraction. During their hours of operation (ie. between Mon & Fri, but not weekends) diggers and dump trucks can be seen and sometimes heard over the water.

Meet Robin and Jose
Robin and Jose have been involved in farming for all of their lives and are lucky enough to rent this small slice of heaven from their friends that farm Poplars Farm. Robin and Jose are lovers of all things country and have a passion for recycling / repurposing other people's cast offs. It is a small family run business and they enjoy sharing their beautiful location with other like-minded lovers of the countryside.
Robin likes all things river related and has a love of livestock. Jose runs her own outside catering company, and has a passion for good sustainably produced food and is a seriously good cake maker! They both enjoy how their work helps them to meet some really great people along the way.
Wildlife & Environment
Trent Adventure is a bird watcher's paradise, with good chances of seeing kingfishers, swans, grebes, little egrets, herons and oyster catchers by the river and lots of farmland birds when looking in the other direction. The Sand Martins nest in the bank from March-October, there is usually skylark song in summer, a hobby, buzzards, barn owl, yellow wagtails and much, much more. There is a pair of binoculars hanging by the door of the horsebox! There's also been recent sightings of an otter. The horsebox is solar powered for all electrics, and uses bottled gas for cooking and water heating.

Our guests say...
Michelle
Very peaceful stay in very novel accommodation. Nice touches from the owners who obviously care that their guests enjoy their stay.

We couldn't have been happier with our little stay in Martin Green. The horsebox is so beautifully put together and well equipped...there wasn't anything we needed that it didn't have. It felt airy and bright and had views out every window to sit you right in the middle of nature. Location was perfect for us and we loved having so much all within a short drive or even a cycle. Robin was very welcoming and the extra touches of having the essential groceries already in was so thoughtful. We'd absolutely stay again.
14/09/2024Chloe
Martin Green was the perfect off-grid getaway, just what we needed! Sitting watching the cows from the terrace, enjoying the cosy inside when it got cooler and hiring a canoe for an afternoon - all perfect!
04/08/2024Beth
We absolutely loved it. So much nature all around. The actual accommodation had everything we could possibly need. The games were perfect for the rain showers and blankets to snuggle under while reading.
14/06/2024Amy
We absolutely loved Martin Green. Robin and Jose had thought of everything and it was such a novel experience sleeping in a horsebox for a couple of nights. They have used the space so well and we loved the little touches like the welcome brownies and other treats as well as messages to let us know we could check in early and ensure we were settling in well. Both beds were so comfy and the peaceful setting meant we slept like logs. Lots to do in the area - we had a day at Calke Abbey which was excellent but loads of other options if you have longer and we'd love to try their kayaking another time.

We had a lovely stay at Martin Green. The place was lovely and the brownies, bread, butter and milk were a lovely welcome touch. The bed was so comfy and to be right next to the river was great. It was lovely and quiet and relaxing. There were lots of things to do around the area which were all written down in the little guide. Lovely place and Robin was so helpful and quick at replying to all of our questions and messages. Thank you for a great stay!
13/10/2023Aimee
The area was beautiful and Martin Green was very well equipped. Robin was so helpful and nothing was too much trouble. Can't praise them more. I am already thinking about going back.

We had a lovely, relaxing stay at Martin Green. Beautiful views from the Horse Box with lots of wildlife to spot. The Horse Box was comfortable and cosy, with lots of little features. The host was friendly and easy to contact if we had any questions. We booked onto one of the canoe-paddles and had a brilliant morning paddling down the Trent.
31/07/2023Becca
Fantastic location, great forwarded information about directions and how to get in and enjoy your time there. Robin and Matt were excellent help and offered great information about the area and safety on the river. The little touches made the horsebox stay even better. Chocolate brownies and essentials. If you want a place to escape this is fantastic. Fantastic wildlife and a great place to just chill out .

Stunning! Peaceful surroundings, surrounded by nature. perfect off grid horsebox. So cosy and decoration was lovely. Everything had been thought out so well, we needed nothing. The local eggs, milk, bread and brownies were lovely!
07/06/2023Lesley
We had a lovely time here, it was a very quiet and peaceful location, and the owner was very friendly and helpful.
16/09/2022Georgia
Martin Green was our first choice for a relaxing weekend of adventure as a couple (children not included this time). Every thoughtful touch in this cleverly converted horsebox makes for a comfortable, cosy and unique stay. We'll be back again without a doubt.
12/08/2022Jeanette
What a brilliant horse box, lovingly converted with everything we needed. The location was also perfect, right on the river with beautiful fields all around
10/07/2022Lucy
This holiday was a treat from my son and his wife. We chose to book this particular weekend as it was our wedding anniversary. It was a beautiful location, very peaceful and relaxing. We enjoyed staying in the caravan which was cool in the evenings of very hot days. The brownies, milk, eggs etc were very welcome. The water was hot in minutes. The shower was good.
08/07/2022Janet
Wonderful stay, great location and just the break from the city that we needed
30/05/2022James
Such a wonderful couple of nights at Martin Green! The location on the river is so lovely, so much wildlife to see whilst enjoying a drink out on the deck. It’s even better than the photos and much more spacious than it looks! Some great little touches in the kitchen that made cooking breakfast in the morning a treat. Left feeling relaxed and wishing I’d had longer!
20/05/2022Cat
We really enjoyed our stay at Martin Green. The Hosts were amazing - so easy to contact and the introduction videos were great. Arriving to a homemade brownie, milk, bread and eggs was also a lovely touch. A weekend without a TV or the laptop was just what we needed and we had the PERFECT neighbours (a field full of lambs). We sent videos to our families and they have already booked to stay for a weekend. We will 100% be revisting
15/04/2022Sophie
The horse box was even cuter than we were expecting. It had everything we needed and was spotlessly clean. We were not expecting it to be quite so cold during our trip but once inside the box with the fire on it was lovely and cosy and the addition of the hot water bottles for bed was great. It’s perfectly placed for watching the sun rise in the morning. The location is great, not too far to the local pub. I definitely want to come back when it’s a bit warmer to make the most of the lovely terrace and maybe do some canoeing. Although we never met the owners they made us feel very welcome by leaving us eggs, bread and delicious cake. It was the perfect weekend away from the city.
31/03/2022Stacey
The Horse Box was absolutely fabulous, really cosy, it had everything you need while being off grid.
13/10/2021Claire
Lovely stay, very peaceful.
06/10/2021Fred
Excellent. Quiet riverside site, able to sit and watch all the wildlife such as the swans on the river, saw a heron, hare, watching the cows going to the river to drink, hundreds of flying geese and ducks, flying swans lovely to see. Lovely converted horsebox for accomodation with everything you could need ,just had to buy food but Robin provided a loaf of bread ,milk ,piece of cake, eggs ,butter and drinking water .Especially enjoyed sitting out on the decking quietly reading my book and also really enjoyed the walk to Anchor Church ..an ancient hermits cave ,a lovely peaceful walk by the river. Mercia marina was lovely too and enjoyed a canal boat ride.Really loved the horsebox ,the bed at the top of the ladder was really comfy and cosy although hubby slept on the couch as not so agile but he was comfy too. Loved that the box had solar power and the usb points were useful .Well equipped with everything ,pots ,pans ,cutlery, gas oven and hob, fridge, toilet and shower, log burner but we were warm enough. Robin is the pefect host, friendly and informative.Would have liked to have stayed longer .

We always go away at this time of year as it is our wedding anniversary. Martin Green is just what we wanted as it provided us a chance to reconnect with each other as well as nature. The Horse box has everything you need in such a fabulous place and with the addition of Tent Adventure it was a fantastic few days.
02/09/2021Nathaniel
Beautiful peaceful location - really thoughtfully and well appointed recycled horsebox, I especially valued the well appointed kitchen stuff (so rare to have good sharp knives) and it was also pretty
25/08/2021Esther
Our stay was great, we watched the sunrise from bed, we lit a fire pit by the river at dusk with a glass of vino, we bbq’d, saw so much wildlife, relaxed and unwound. Thank you
09/08/2021Gemma
We stayed at Martin Green for 2 days with our daughter. Soon as we arrived we were welcomed by Robin who took us to our beautiful horse box. The horse box it self is just stunning with 2 very comfortable beds. What was a lovely gesture too was milk and butter in a fridge and eggs and bread to start our day with. The surroundings are absolutely beautiful! We played in a river and watched the cows coming to have a drink. We flew a kite that was in a horse box for kids to use. We also visited the marina near by which is lovely place to see, have a food and mooch around shops. Just perfect getaway.
26/07/2021Jira
It was great: exactly what we needed, peace and quiet, lots of wildlife to watch while we drank wine on the deck, canoeing on the beautiful river
24/07/2021Ben
Had a wonderful time, very relaxing.

Fantastic stay, sun was shining, felt great being with nature and off-grid.
13/06/2021Justine
Martin Green was unique, it was very well thought of, everything you needed in a small space. It was peaceful. Waking up to the beautiful views was amazing. Nothing was too much trouble, Robin and Jose also added some personal touches for my partners birthday. There was much to explore with maps of various trails left for us too. we even joined in with the canoeing down the Trent adding a little wild swimming in too. Highly recommend
11/06/2021Marica
We had a fantastic time! The horsebox was lovely and cosy and well equipped. The location was so peaceful and we really enjoyed watching the birds on the river. Canoeing down the canal was a real treat as well!

We chose this place as it looked lovely and remote and had great potential for relaxing, walking and some wildlife spotting. The horse box looked well equipped and cosy and the host had good reviews

Property finished and maintain immaculately, surroundings were dreamy and hosts were extremely accommodating. Couldn’t ask for more.

We had a wonderful time - having stayed in many different glamping places over the years, this one rated very highly. We loved the design and layout, with every little detail thought of. The river location is perfect - so peaceful. Lovely walks and canoeing with Trent Adventures is highly recommended. We’d love to come back!

Me and my partner had 2 nights at Martin Green - we had the most relaxing and wonderful time taking in the views and watching the wildlife on the river, the owner was extremely friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Just an all round wonderful experience and would definitely stay again.

Wow..... absolutely beautiful place to stay, the scenery gets 10/10.... Peaceful, Beautiful and in the heart of our gorgeous countryside. The horse box was finished to the highest standard, very clean and the final touches were super special- Rob our Host was a fine gentleman, friendly, welcoming and genuinely a lovely man. I will most definitely be returning again.
14/04/2021Michelle
Easy contactless check in, useful videos sent prior to arrival, beautiful riverside setting, very quiet and not overlooked. Very well appointed accommodation with well thought out design and lots of little extras. Very lazy days just watching the river and evenings by the fire. Just what I needed after a busy couple of months.
12/04/2021Edward
We had a gorgeous stay in the river side horse box. Lovely to be nestled up by the log burner watching the birds.
02/11/2020Katy
We had a lovely stay a Martin Green. It was so cosy and homey and being off grid was exactly what we needed! Little extra touches from Robin made our stay even more special.
28/10/2020Katie
Everything about our stay was beautiful. Robin was a lovely and warm person who made us both feel welcome. We got into the Horsebox with a big smile, not only did it look amazing Robin left fresh bread, eggs and milk for our stay and to add his wife made brownies for us that were delicious, so delicious that we've spent the passed week trying to make them exactly like hers. The view from every window is a beautiful experience, the river is so calming to look at and hear especially at night when you've got the roof window open above the bed. Thank you so much Robin for a wonderdul stay. We will definitely be coming again. All the best, Matthew.
18/10/2020Matthew
Martin Green was a gorgeous experience! It's the perfect cosy retreat after bracing Autumnal walks, and with it's roaring log burner at the heart of the horsebox you'll never get chilly. The horsebox is so well thought-out with every nook and cranny geared towards maximising the space and making your experience as easy as possible. For example, the indoor shower and loo are compact and perfectly formed. We were really impressed by the hot shower too! The hosts really went the extra mile by providing homemade flapjacks (to die for!) and leaving birthday messages dotted about the place for my partner's birthday. The welcome hamper of bread, eggs and butter was also a great bonus. Even in (a sometimes rainy) October, the setting was beautiful - with swans, geese and more playing on the river and its banks. 11 out of 10. We would highly recommend.
05/10/2020Laura
We loved staying here! This is where I proposed to my girlfriend and she said yes! :) We will always have the nice memory of that lovely day by the river, watching the birds and enjoying the tiny house.
20/09/2020Diner
A wonderful relaxing time. Great hosts. Martin Green was cosy and comfortable and a lot of thought has gone into it. Lovely to relax by the river and watch the wildlife. Fishing on the River Trent with some great catches. Perfect relaxation location.
18/09/2020Alison
We had a lovely tranquil stay. The horsebox is beautifully converted by the talented hosts, with a wood burner and very comfortable bed above the cab. The outdoor seating area looks out over the river and the glass doors mean you have a wonderful view even when you are inside. We saw herons, cormorants, kingfishers, geese, egrets.... We also took advantage of the onsite canoeing. It was great fun!
11/09/2020Amelia
Our stay at the horse Box was so tranquil and was such great service by Robin who gave us all the information we needed and more. The canoe hire next door was great too as we ended our canoeing outside the horse Box which was perfect. Lovely views of the river and wildlife all around. 100% would recommend and would go again in the future!
04/09/2020Sarah
Absolutely fantastic, great setting, great accommodation, great host
28/08/2020Danielle
Check in/out were easy. Some lovely welcome touches with bread, eggs milk etc. Our boy loved the cake left for us. Fabulous facilities. So cleverly designed to fit everything in. Glorious spot by the river. Comfortable and relaxing. We wished we had booked a longer stay. We were well positioned for exploring the area and our hosts were so warm and welcoming.
08/08/2020Cheryl
Staying at Martin Green was one of the best experiences I've had in months - the owners had thought of absolutely everything and the horse box itself had been put together with such care. The bed was unbelievably comfortable and I got the best night's sleep thanks to that and the total peace and quiet. Our hosts were so considerate, and the setting was delightful. Couldn't fault it one bit!
14/07/2020Florence
Relaxing in a beautifully converted horse box with nature on the doorstep.
06/07/2020Katy
We chose this place for a mini retreat from the current situation - couldn’t have asked for more it was just what we needed. Peaceful, quiet and pretty location by the river. Super friendly hosts for whom nothing was too much trouble they gave us a friendly and safe welcome and farewell and we’d love to come back again!
05/07/2020Ruth
Wonderful stay. The location was PERFECT and the accommodation was tastefully renovated with a very homely feel. Nothing was too much trouble for the host (Robin) who stopped by to top up our wood for the log burner and checked in regularly. Will definitely be booking again.
16/03/2020Jonathan
We had an amazing weekend in this lovingly restored horse box sat on the edge of the river Trent
29/11/2019Claire
The horsebox transports you away from hustle and bustle. The calming influence of the river and warm log burner helps you truly switch off. It was cosy and beautifully built. An absolute delight.
26/10/2019L
It was an absolutely lovely little place. The location is amazing! Really convenient as a stop off going up North from down South. There was plenty of food and drink for us to keep us going and it was really warm due to the fab log burner!
24/10/2019Johnny
An amazingly peaceful location, great for getting off grid for a while.
11/10/2019Donna
We arrived from the stress of work and commuting straight into a little slice of paradise. Martin Green is an idyllic spot by the river with green as far as the eye could see. Despite the rain and wind we had such a relaxing time enjoying the horsebox and surroundings. The little fire kept us snug and cosy and we really had every comfort we could need for the weekend. Thank you Robin! We will be back!

So relaxing, so welcoming. Beautiful conversion with all the thoughtful and cosy touches for everything you'd need. Duvet was out of this world and so warm! Husband spent the day fishing while I sat I the moon chair reading my book. Weather was glorious so ate outside by the solar lights on the decking. Very romantic!!

An amazingly peaceful place to lose time as you watch the river and wildlife just pass you by. A very cleverly designed horsebox, and generous and helpful hosts.

The location was superb; stunning views, no houses or roads, birds to watch etc.. The accommodation was first class; all facilities worked well and were well thought out. Robin was welcoming, efficient and nothing eas too much trouble.

I work abroad every other month. When I arrive home I care for my 12yr old daughter as a single parent. I regularly seek unique and novel short stay holidays for my daughter and I to enjoy. This holiday provided all of the above at great value. My daughter will benefit from wonderful memories of being with her dad, spending quality time together. She loves horses, so her eyes lit up when she heard that we were staying in a horse lorry. She totally loved it!!! Thanks

Lovely relaxing stay in the horsebox. The horsebox itself has been stunningly remodelled, with lots of lovely touches. The location right on the river bank is very peaceful.

Absolutely fabulous!!!!! Location and accommodation second to none, 1st class hosts nothing was too much trouble and Dennis the dog is lovely! Robin is clearly so proud of his achievements in restoring the Martin Green and rightly so, every necessity covered plus lots of thoughtful essentials as well. We had a lovely break by the river, thank you for making it perfect :)
14/08/2019Marion
Wonderful spot by the River Trent. As a keen birdwatcher I was particularly enchanted by the sand martins swooping over the river (and much more besides...). Robin was very friendly and welcoming, and the horsebox is a thing of beauty: lovingly converted with great attention to detail, and very comfortable. All in all, an excellent, if brief, stay, and one I’ll definitely look to repeat sooner rather than later.

We stayed for 2 nights and had an excellent time. Welcome package lovely - including newly laid eggs. Rural location but within easy reach of lots of places to visit and supermarket etc. Very relaxing - with everything thought of.

Myself and my fiancé stayed for a couple of nights at Martin Green and loved it! The location is beautiful and the accommodation is too. The horsebox is lovely and has everything you're likely to need. We had one night of less than pleasant weather but it didn't matter at all when we were cuddled up around the log burner. The next morning was beautiful, so we flung open all the doors and had breakfast on the decking, by the river. Add to this that Robin was a superb host and it made for a pretty perfect weekend.
10/05/2019Paul
We had an amazing stay at the horsebox! Fabulous views of the river and a great place to get away and unwind. The horsebox itself has been converted thoughtfully to contain everything you would need for your stay, and Robin the host is super helpful if there are any questions. Would definitely recommend hiring a canoe from Robin and exploring the river as well.
19/04/2019Kayleigh
We were welcomed warmly everything was explained and shown. The horse box is very well thought out and fitted to a high standard including a toilet and shower, a lovely verander and beautiful location with resident swans ,martins and lambs to watch across a fast flowing river. Beds were large and firm , glass doors and windows made it a pleasant light filled space. Games books and usb points were availiable. A remarkable transformation lovingly restored, ideal for 2 a little cramped for children should weather be poor.we enjoyed our stay and would love to visit again. An unexpected bonus we encountered baby chicks at the shed.

Martin Green has such an enviable spot right on the river, it's no wonder this part of the bank is a local wildlife hangout. After offloading our rucksacks, we perched out on the deck with a couple of ciders and watched the sun disappear before settling in for the night. There's plenty of games, books and a pair of binoculars to keep you occupied - Robin's even kindly left a pair of reading glasses if you've forgotten yours! Had we been staying longer, we'd have stuck in with the canoe hire too, which is conveniently located next door and run by owner Robin, but even so, you'd happily find us sitting on the deck and watching the river swim by.

We chose this location as it was not far from us. We wanted to stay in a unique place and that's what we got. There are plenty of pubs to walk or a short drive to. We were surrounded by wildlife and fields. It exceeded our expectation and was perfect for chilling

Martin Green was the perfect off-grid getaway, just what we needed! Sitting watching the cows from the terrace, enjoying the cosy inside when it got cooler and hiring a canoe for an afternoon - all perfect!

We absolutely loved it. So much nature all around. The actual accommodation had everything we could possibly need. The games were perfect for the rain showers and blankets to snuggle under while reading.

Martin Green was our first choice for a relaxing weekend of adventure as a couple (children not included this time). Every thoughtful touch in this cleverly converted horsebox makes for a comfortable, cosy and unique stay. We'll be back again without a doubt.

Thank you

The river location is perfect - so peaceful. Lovely walks and canoeing with Trent Adventures is highly recommended. We’d love to come back!

Wow..... absolutely beautiful place to stay, the scenery gets 10/10.... Peaceful, Beautiful and in the heart of our gorgeous countryside. The horse box was finished to the highest standard, very clean and the final touches were super special- Rob our Host was a fine gentleman, friendly, welcoming and genuinely a lovely man. I will most definitely be returning again.

A wonderful relaxing time. Great hosts. Martin Green was cosy and comfortable and a lot of thought has gone into it. Lovely to relax by the river and watch the wildlife. Fishing on the River Trent with some great catches. Perfect relaxation location.

Wonderful stay. The location was PERFECT and the accommodation was tastefully renovated with a very homely feel. Nothing was too much trouble for the host (Robin) who stopped by to top up our wood for the log burner and checked in regularly. Will definitely be booking again.
