Overview
With double decks and big windows on this ingenious conversion, you’ll be able to sit and feel the peace, as birds come flitting over the water or swooping in to land. You could head for the canal for some easy cycling, or take the three-mile wander to the Dragon at Willington, where you can stop for a pint on the banks before wobbling back. Anchor Church caves have a great wild swimming spot, Blue John a flooded mine you can explore by boat, while owners Robin and Jose can instruct you in green woodworking if you fancy a drier activity.
Jennings is also a beautiful space for idling. The snug raised bed is a king-size nest, perfect for long lie-ins, the bathroom has a gas-heated shower and compost loo and the kitchen a proper oven and hobs, so you can cook up fine meals or make a quick cup of coffee in the morning. It’s been kitted out with a loving nod to its 60s origins and decks on either side mean you can follow the sun or the shade and that you have plenty of space for yoga or just a stretched-out nap. You’ll see the other horsebox, Martin Green, about 30m away, but the two share no facilities, so you’ll only meet guests when you’re coming and going. There are USB charge points but no mains power, meaning you can run what you really need, but are encouraged to simply switch off for a bit and enjoy the countryside, the birds and the gentle sounds of the river.

Perfect - lovely surroundings and a beautiful little horse box. Loads to do in the area and Robin was really helpful with instructions for check-in and with communication throughout our stay

Cozy couple of nights away from home in the lovely Jennings horsebox. Spent cozy nights in reading with a fire and enjoyed the wildlife surrounding us.
12/07/2024Jessica
We loved it, it was a very special place.
21/06/2024Toby
A wonderfully peaceful weekend, sitting out on the deck reading and watching the wildlife around the river. Fantastic sundowners spot too. Robin is very friendly and on hand to help if you need anything. Book in for canoe hire before you stay and then you can stumble back to your horsebox after a good day's paddle. Thank you to Robin and Jose for a brilliant stay!
08/06/2024Sarah, Canopy & Stars
Fantastic location, gorgeous converted horsebox, with all you need and more for a quiet off grid riverside break. Hosts are easily contactable for any help or advice and are very friendly. I will happily stay here again, and recommend anyone else does as well.
29/04/2024Gareth
The horsebox conversion has been done extremely well and I commend the owners on their attention to detail. A beautiful place to stay. For me, the location wasn’t as good as I’d hoped. I felt like I was staying on agricultural land rather than in “nature”, which resulted in me driving away each day to find something more natural.
02/04/2024Louise
Perfect little getaway. The place itself is really well thought through, off the grid and focuses you to really relax and recharge. The kitchen fitting is gorgeous, with a gas oven and stove, everything you need. The bed is comfy and deceptive as a king!! Beautiful views and setting. Although no plugs for anyone thinking hairdryers :)
22/09/2023Sarah
Absolutely fantastic. Such a quirky place to stay in tranquil surroundings. Great use of space and everything you need provided. Comfy bed once you’re up there. Great outdoor space with seating and fire pit. Private but owners on hand if needed (which we didn’t). Will definitely return. Thank you
01/09/2023Sally
Delightful converted horse lorry in a quiet rural area. Owners very welcoming and attentive, and add some really good extras.
09/08/2023Stephen
My fiancé and I had a fantastic weekend at Jennings. The location is fantastic and the accommodation itself was nothing short of spectacular. Robin was an amazing host, explaining everything well. The place was inviting and it was easy to understand what needed to be done to enjoy the space. The place felt private despite having another accommodation on site.
28/07/2023Merle
My stay at Jennings was just wanted I needed/ a place that felt like food to my soul. A quirky place to enjoy in the expansiveness of nature. I could switch off from everything and just enjoy the birdsong, the sunsets, the hares playing. The places to visit nearby were in keeping with the peace and beauty I craved. I loved Calke Abbey and Repton in particular. The information left by the owners guided me in the right direction for my stay and visits. The welcome hamper was a treat too.
23/06/2023Joanne
Absolutely loved this gem in the heart of the Derbyshire countryside. This little horsebox had all of the home comforts we could have needed and we couldn't have enjoyed the peace of the surrounding any more!! Robin was a lovely host, knowing he was around in the area, running Trent Adventures was reassuring but never imposing. Highly recommend this lovely little accommodation and definitely likely to return ourselves
10/06/2023Sarah
Jennings exceeded our expectations with a much more beautiful rural setting than we had expected and a brilliant conversion of a classic vehicle. Robin was friendly and helpful and everything worked well.
24/05/2023Kate
We had 3 nights at Jennings in April 2023 over the Easter break. The horsebox has been converted into a lovely bolthole in a beautiful setting - even though we had wild and wet weather for most of our stay, we enjoyed sitting inside and looking out at the river, fields, sheep and cattle. Very cosy with the stove and the little kitchen for plentiful tea, and well equipped for everything you'd need for a few nights - including a lovely welcome 'hamper' with eggs, bread, brownies, butter and jam, and board games to while away a wet afternoon.
12/04/2023Jessica
Well what can we say. It was one of the most amazing stays ever!! Accommodation was perfect. Robin the owner was brilliant. We were given clear instructions on how to use all the facilities and the little extras for when we arrived were perfect! We would highly recommend for anyone looking for a weekend away to relax. Seeing the sheep and lambs in the next field was lovely when having your morning breakfast. 10 out 10
31/03/2023Sophie
We had a lovely stay in the horsebox, so peaceful and homely. It was such a great experience I was sad to say goodbye.
25/03/2023Olivia
The stay at Jennings was absolutely perfect, if you have any doubts about it, just go for it!!!
20/09/2022Kristijan
Lovely well built/refurbed and maintained original horse box set along side a river, in a very peaceful location. Robin met us when we arrived and instantly new who we were, he was very friendly as were the others who worked with the canoes. We took a trip out on the river in the canoes which was also lovely. Highly recommended.
02/09/2022Jennifer
We had an amazing stay in Jennings. It was the perfect getaway to get away from it all and really switch off. In the summer heat we spent the days swimming in the river and relaxing under the shade of the big trees. The kitchen is great to cook in and we felt so relaxed we even cancelled our dinner reservation to stay in! Would 100% recommend. The hosts are so helpful too.
12/08/2022Harriet
This was our 4th stay with a Canopy & Stars HorseBox and was absolutely perfect. This unit was spacious with kitchen, Table, sofa, Bed and Bathroom. Bathroom was great and the location was perfect.
10/11/2021Nicholas
We had a wonderful stay at Jennings. The pre-arrival intruction videos were very helpful and the additional touches - bread, milk, cake and eggs were much appreciated. The horsebox is incredibly cost and well appointed, with a beautiful location looking out over the river and fields.
26/10/2021Louisa
We had a very peaceful realxing weekend away. The location was lovely and the horsebox was really special.
22/10/2021Matthew
It was just wonderful. We forgot to take the charger for our laptop and didn’t miss it fir. Moment. Sitting in front of the stove at night or on the balcony was so peaceful. We used our own inflatable canoe abc didn’t hours paddling or just walking. The horse box is delightful and do well equipped. Communication was excellent and avoided us wasting a single moment
08/10/2021Julie
beautiful accommodation , in a very peaceful and tranquil setting.
06/09/2021caroline
We had a wonderdul stay at the Jennings. The horse box was clean and had so many lovely touches that it really made us feel at home. it is just perfect for a short break. The views were lovely and with Robins help we went out kayaking on the nearby river which was a highlight of our trip! we would definitely reccomend.
27/08/2021Lisa
Amazing stay again, so good last month I came back again!
04/08/2021Suzette
We had a wonderful, relaxing stay. Lots of wildlife surrounding the property: hares, buzzards, herons, Martins, bats, kingfishers etc.
23/07/2021Kayleigh
We stayed at Jennings for two nights, to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. We enjoyed the chance to get away from everyday life and literally just relax, and it was great to experience being off the grid.
21/07/2021Chris
Loved it again!
18/07/2021Nathalie
We could not recommend our stay at Jennings enough. The horse box is beautifully done and has absolutely everything you could ever need for a short break. We were particularly impressed by all the small touches left for us, including basic groceries, some incredible homemade brownies and fresh flowers! The setting is stunning and while we we only there for 2 nights, it felt like a real getaway. Our host, Robin, was very helpful and welcoming, and even managed to find us a last minute space to take out a canoe on the river. Could not recommend enough - we’ll be returning!
09/07/2021Ella
This place was just a little slice of heaven. The Location is very private and immersed deep in the countryside with views of the River Trent and fields around. It was easy to find and The Horsebox had everything I needed, including lots of food and extras to keep me going for a few days. It was comfortable and finished to a very high standard and the double deck was just brilliant for Yoga and chilling to the amazing sunsets. A great off grid retreat to just get away from it all and reset
07/07/2021Suzette
From the moment I got there I relaxed. Jennings is located in a field with the Trent at the bottom, so there is a vast array of wildlife, birds, hares, pheasants and the most stunning little dragon flies.
16/06/2021Lauren
A stunning quality and beautifully appointed horse box conversion in a gorgeous river side location. Eco/Solar powered throughout which appealed to me. A warm welcome on arrival. Complimentary milk, eggs, bread, butter, jams, bottled water and yummy homemade brownies. All other basics provided and more! I had a wonderful stay, cosy nights in beside the log burner (logs provided), read an entire book in one day! Lovely walks, engaging wildlife. A real haven and oasis. Utterly charming. I will most certainly be returning. I have stayed in various conversions over the years, Jennings comes in at No.1!
18/05/2021Angela
This was our second time at Jennings horsebox and once again it was just perfect. Hospitality, most awesome chocolate fudge cake, comfortable bed...the view from our horsebox...the silence!!! Everything! Very soul healing. I actually felt emotional leaving!
17/04/2021Iwona
I stayed for a couple of nights in April. It was a much-needed break alone to recharge my batteries and take some time for reflection.
15/04/2021Emma
I stayed at Jennings for 3 nights in October 2020 and it was the perfect retreat for me to spend three days on my own. It's off grid and cut off from the world, surrounded by nature on the bank of the river Trent...but with all the luxuries you might want. The horse box has been renovated with so much love and care creating a remarkable little home from home to recharge the batteries. Robin was a fabulous host and supplied me with extra logs during my stay as well as allowing me a few extra hours upon check-out which made a huge difference to me. The horse box is stocked with firewood, blankets, bedlinen, a range of teas, coffee, eggs, bread, cake, butter and milk which meant I was stocked up for my first night without having to venture out, perfect forethought from Robin. I cannot wait to return and already miss the rain drumming on the roof and the sound of the birds on the riverbanks.
25/10/2020Sarah
We had such a wonderful time, Robin was so friendly and had made some helpful videos to introduce us to the place while being covid-safe. We really appreciated the bread/ eggs/ butter that was left for us, as well as the books, games and binoculars.
08/10/2020Bibi
We just loved our stay at ‘Jennings’ it was such a cosy and beautifully designed renovation. The bed was super comfy and we slept so well each night in the very peaceful surroundings. We thought it was lovely to have the bread, milk, eggs and cake on arrival always a nice welcome after a long journey. Particularly enjoyed the delicious cake and the bread was really tasty too.
21/09/2020Fran
What a lovely place to stay! The conversion of the horse box is wonderful - best kitchen of any of the cabins/conversions we have stayed in and the bed is very comfortable. Loved getting away from it all but definitely not ‘roughing it’!
31/08/2020Zoe
We really enjoyed our stay in Jennings. The horse box has been beautifully and lovingly restored Robin was a perfect host and was on hand and ready to answer all of our questions during our stay.
29/08/2020Charlie
I loved the idea of the converted horse box, being near the lake.
19/08/2020Elaine
We're super excited to be adding Robin and Jose's latest space. A wonderful addition to the collection. The feedback for Martin Green should give you a good feel for what it will be like. Book a stay and be the first to write a review!

We had a wonderful stay at Jennings. The pre-arrival intruction videos were very helpful and the additional touches - bread, milk, cake and eggs were much appreciated. The horsebox is incredibly cost and well appointed, with a beautiful location looking out over the river and fields.

We had a wonderful, relaxing stay. Lots of wildlife surrounding the property: hares, buzzards, herons, Martins, bats, kingfishers etc.

We stayed at Jennings for two nights, to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. We enjoyed the chance to get away from everyday life and literally just relax, and it was great to experience being off the grid.

From the moment I got there I relaxed. Jennings is located in a field with the Trent at the bottom, so there is a vast array of wildlife, birds, hares, pheasants and the most stunning little dragon flies.

I stayed for a couple of nights in April. It was a much-needed break alone to recharge my batteries and take some time for reflection.

We had such a wonderful time, Robin was so friendly and had made some helpful videos to introduce us to the place while being covid-safe. We really appreciated the bread/ eggs/ butter that was left for us, as well as the books, games and binoculars.

What a lovely place to stay! The conversion of the horse box is wonderful - best kitchen of any of the cabins/conversions we have stayed in and the bed is very comfortable. Loved getting away from it all but definitely not ‘roughing it’!

We really enjoyed our stay in Jennings. The horse box has been beautifully and lovingly restored Robin was a perfect host and was on hand and ready to answer all of our questions during our stay.

I loved the idea of the converted horse box, being near the lake.

We're super excited to be adding Robin and Jose's latest space. A wonderful addition to the collection. The feedback for Martin Green should give you a good feel for what it will be like. Book a stay and be the first to write a review!

We had a fabulous time staying in the horsebox , absolutely no ‘white noise’ at all just the sound of nature . Perfectly positioned for peace and tranquility with a very short drive to the marina for a coffee and cake .
