Meet your hosts

The concept behind Scales Plantation was born through Tab and Rob’s desire to share the sensational beauty of their home withthe rest of the world. The working sheep and cattle farm sits roughly 1000 feet above sea level where life on an upland farm is not always easy. Nevertheless, the breathtaking views over the North Lake Fells easily make up for all the hard work and long hours.
Environmental Policy
Tab and Rob are working hard to safeguard their little slice of Cumbria for future generations. With solar powered electricity, self composting loos and enthusiastic recycling, the green ethos at Scales Plantation is clearly visible. The family is involved in numerous environmental schemes. They have cleared acres of woodland to preserve and encourage wildlife breeding grounds and laid over 1km of hedgerow, planted over 2500 upland hardwoods and created seven ponds and wetland environments. They have also set aside 100 acres of moorland for heather regeneration to provide habitat for grouse.

Wildlife
Scales Plantation is home to a variety of wildlife. The woodlands of the Lake District remain one of the few areas of the country where the red squirrel can still be found in the wild. Cumbria is rich in birdlife and over 200 bird species are recorded in Cumbria in any one year. Many visitors to the Lake District in recent years have shared in the excitement of seeing ospreys breeding in craggy woodland near Bassenthwaite Lake.

So peaceful, beautiful setting, majestic scenery. Really fabulous. All facilities excellent. The hut and kitchen are in a secluded , peaceful spot.Great walks and pub lunch. Tab is absolutely exceptional. Nothing is too much trouble for her. As a first time shepherd hut/ log burner person she talked me through everything. So helpful.

We had such a wonderful time here. We stayed there nights but felt like we'd been away for a week. It's was so relaxing. Everything from the bedding to the kitchen ware was such high quality and so it felt very luxurious whilst also feeling as though you were amongst nature. We caused all sorts of bother with sleeping arrangements for our baby and getting a flat battery on our car and the hosts couldn't have been more helpful and kind. We would love to stay again and will be recommending it to our friends.
20/10/2023Sophie
We had a lovely peaceful stay in the Lakes. The location was great for exploring the lakes and nice and private away from the hustle and bustle. We had everything we needed and had a lovely family trip.
28/08/2023Kirsty
My daughter & I returned once again to our much loved adventures to Scales Plantation. We spend our time climbing Wainwrights and returning to our Shepherd's Hut to spend happy times surrounded by fells, herdy sheep and peace - we love our time - thank you so much to Tabs who always is there with a smile if needed.
18/08/2023Helen
Lovely stay at a unique location
14/08/2023Sam
We had a fantastic time at Carrock. Everything was perfectly set up to give you the idea of being off the beaten track with all the comfort of home.
29/05/2023Natalie
We had a fantastic time (despite the weather!).
10/04/2023Stuart
We really enjoyed Carrock. A peaceful location and fabulous accommodation. The shepherd's hut was cosy and the kitchen area had everything we could need. The kids loved the warm bath. The fact that soaps, towels, bedding, milk and bread were provided were a real bonus.
19/08/2022Kate
We loved the set up, one of those rare places where thought and attention to detail are apparent everywhere. Felt right at home from the off and it was the perfect place for a family of 4 to spend some time together away from the distractions of the outside world (no mobile phone signal or WiFi = bliss and board games). We shall return.
12/08/2022Rachel
at one with nature, was so peaceful
25/07/2022Ann
This was our second stay at Scales Plantation and couldn't ask for more. It was an ideal location so peaceful and quiet yet not far from Penrith etc.
27/06/2022Richard
Absolutely fantastic place, beautiful location and wonderful facilities. The whole camp is perfect, such a lovely kitchen with great facilities, and the shepherds hut's have super comfortable beds and stay lovely and warm. The bathroom is incredible, a lovely, warn and powerful shower, unlike anytime we have ever experienced in a "glamping" situation..... Tab the host is so lovely and accommodating, and could not do more to make us feel welcome and deliver us some extra firewood. We really cannot recommend Scales Plantation enough, if you really want to get away from it all. There are a few lovely walks right on the doorstep, so we gladly didn't use the car for 3 days while we were there.
15/04/2022Martyn
We had such a lovely time here - despite the torrential rain! It was beautifully secluded and really comfortable - we had absolutely everything that we could possibly have needed and we're warm and cosy the whole time. Tab was helpful and made sure that we had enough fire wood (did I mention the torrential rain?!?) as we had to spend most of our stay at the site. DEFINITELY booking again so that we can enjoy this gorgeous place in better weather!
25/10/2021Kate
The stay was amazing, great homely touches like the bacon and eggs and the tea and biscuits. Great location and facilities. Felt like you were away from everything.
23/07/2021Laura
Great stay with the kids, we loved cooking over the campfire and relaxing outside after a long day of walking. Peaceful and really dark at night for stargazing.
19/07/2021Catherine
Scales Plantation is the perfect place to relax. Such peaceful and beautiful surroundings. The shepherds huts are so cosy and comfortable. We've been a number of times and are always excited to come back and are reluctant to leave! Tabitha is great, very welcoming and friendly and quick to respond with help if you need it. We walked, cycled and sat around the campfire - perfect weekend!
18/06/2021Kim
We absolutely loved our stay at Carrock. Perfect surroundings, lovely hosts and wonderful facilities. The huts were cosy and the kitchens work really well. The welcome pack from the hosts was a lovely touch. The kids loved the freedom of the woods and seeing the spring lambs.
04/06/2021Gemma
Our stay was brilliant. Our hosts communicated well with us on run up to the stay, it was easy to find and everything we had hoped for.Carrock of scales plantation is a shepard’s hut , cabin and fire pit set in a glade in beautiful woodland. The set up was fantastically equipped and comfortable, with running hot water, a super clean compost toilet and cosy bathroom. Our hosts had set up all of the wood burners in every room ready for us to use and thoughtfully left us milk eggs and bread for arrival. The camp is 30 minutes drive from stunning lakes and walks which we enjoyed every day. We would love to return sometime.
31/05/2021Emma
Me and my husband found the place very relaxing and it was lovely touch from the host to leave a few food essentials. The whole experience was amazing.
07/05/2021Julie
It was fantastic. Super cosy and fun place to stay. Lots of private outdoor space.
23/04/2021Carolina
We had a great stay even though the weather wasn't great. The log burner kept the kitchen nice and warm and we had everything we needed. The area surrounding the hut has plenty of things to do and some lively walks. Great views over to Blencathra and lovely to be in your own clearing in the woods.
24/08/2020Gemma
What an amazing place - beautiful location, amazing hosts. The accommodation was so cute and everything thought through and catered for. A cosy Shepards hut with a little fire burner, compost toilet and a wooden living area with canvas doors and windows, fire burner, kitchen area. Even a full size bath, toiletries and fresh towels. Rustic and beautiful with views over the mountains, a truly special place.
16/03/2020Clare
We have been before to carrock and it was just as good as the first time if not better
02/08/2019Mark
Stayed at Carrock with a 6 year old and 4 year old who simply loved the wildness of the woods, the comfort of the kitchen and caravan and they couldn't wait to get the campfire lit each evening. Tab was hugely welcoming bringing along a hamper of bacon, eggs and bread for our first breakfast and was super helpful with any queries we had. It was a very comfortable and relaxing stay and would highly recommend it!!
26/07/2019Danny
Lovely location, very peaceful, good reception, everything you need, clean, lovely bedding, generally comfortable. Only criticism, seating in hut would benefit from cushons.
19/07/2019Simon
My partner and I had a lovely time at Scales Plantation. We had everything we needed and felt very cosey and secluded. Was a lovely weekend away from everyday life and we really enjoyed being in a peaceful environment getting back in touch with nature! Full of little touches by the owners to make you feel welcomed.
24/05/2019Holly
If your looking to get away from the crowds of the South lakes, and after a bit of adventure then I would definately recommend. Beautiful surroundings and perfect location for exploring the north eastern fells. Tabs was so helpful and welcoming during our stay, despite being in the middle of planning season. Kitchen area took a while to warm up but it was snowing whilst we we were there so wouldn't be a problem during most stays! And the bedroom area was quick to warm up even in the snow. Water in kitchen and bathroom piping hot - great after some chilly walks!
01/04/2019Claire
Our stay was perfect, loved every minute of our stay
18/03/2019Angela
Wonderful. A great set up that was comfortable, clean and cosy even in the rain. Tab was friendly and helpful, how she keeps the cabins so spotless i dont know! It was great to have such peace and be able to disconnect from everything.
01/10/2018Kate
Great place - loved sheltering from the slightly crazy weather with the log burner raging in the brilliant kitchen area (the pictures don't do it justice), having long relaxing baths in the bathroom (with another log burner!) and sleeping in the cosy shepherds hut. Loved it. Super friendly hosts - both humans and dogs made very welcome
17/09/2018verity
We had a nice few days in Carrock. We loved the set up with the shepherd’s hut, kitchen/bathroom hut and loo. My husband is fussy on toilets but he didn’t even mind the compost loo! The kitchen was well equipped and we were able to cook indoors on the rainy days and outside the one sunny evening. The log burners were a real bonus even in summer to keep us warm in the evenings.
18/06/2018Elizabeth
Having stayed at scales plantation five times over the years, Tabitha remains very warm and welcoming on arrival. The location is peaceful and tranquil, allowing you the chance to unwind from the day to day bustle of every day life, sitting in the evening by the open fire and enjoying a bbq
30/04/2018Andrew
Perfect weekend away. Very cosy shepherds hut and kitchen. Had everything we needed. Tab was very helpful on arrival showing us around. Loved every minute. Very peaceful and beautiful location.
29/12/2017Louise
It was fabulous. Carrock was huggee in every respect. We were beautifully looked after by Tab and loved every minute of our stay and cannot wait to go back.
07/08/2017Sara
What a wonderful place! We had a lovely welcome from Tab, who has thought of everything, the kitchen is well supplied (the welcome pack was perfect)' the stoves in each room make everywhere cosy, and the location is beautiful. Highly recommended & would definitely return. Many thanks to Tab & Rob.
30/06/2017Jo
We had a lovely long family weekend away. No computers, no phones just good old books and games and visits into Keswick.
12/05/2017Emma
Lovely place, good location and helpful host. We would go back in a heartbeat
31/03/2017Sara
This was a 5* weekend break! We enjoyed every second and didn't want to leave!!!
30/09/2016Christina
Our stay at Carrock was really wonderful. Typical Lake District weather but we still managed a lot of hill walking made possible by having such a cosy place to come back to each night. The owner has thought of everything! She was super flexible when we arrived an hour late as we got stuck in traffic. The place was beautiful, we absolutely loved our shepherds hut, the kitchen, the bath and the wood burning stoves were perfect! All wonderfully eco friendly with compost loo and encouraging lots of recyclying and really dog friendly too. What more could you ask for?!
26/09/2016Sarah
We loved it! My kids were bouncing up and down as they explored our camp and declared it the best place ever! The beds were so comfy, the shower was fantastic, the kitchen has everything we needed. I was apprehensive about the compost toilet but it was clean and hygienic and environmentally friendly. Tab arrived just after we did, with a welcome basket and the kids declared the eggs from the farm hens to be the best ever (see a bit of a pattern?). She was friendly and showed us around the camp and let us know she would be available if we needed - we didn't but it's nice to know! We loved the camp and the wild raspberry bushes, where the kids helped themselves. The stay was brilliant?
15/08/2016Alison
We had a very warm and friendly welcome, the camp was tucked away in its own little woodland glade, lots to explore and very dog friendly
08/08/2016emma
I took the girlfriend away for a long weekend at this lovely location for her birthday. Being from the lakes originally i knew it would be a good place to base ourselves from while gaining tourist free access into the lakes. Tab was bery welcoming and the induction to her site was thourough and brief.
22/07/2016Tom
Ideal quiet location. Lovely personal touches to make the glamping experience more hotel and less camping. Cosy beds and great access to the lakes
24/06/2016Kat
A beautiful bolt-hole for getting away from the rat race. We really enjoyed our relaxing few days here, getting back to basics.
04/04/2016Leah
We had a wonderful time at scale plantation. The surrounding is magical, with lots of things to do beautiful trails in the amazing scenery. The huts are great. Well equipped and thoughtfully organized.
28/03/2016Gal
We loved everything from the location , to the set up and the facilities. Very cosy, even in the rain we were snug ! The privacy was good although you were aware there were other people on the site it felt very private. Lots of hot running water, one of the nicest baths I've ever had ! We will definately go back . We wanted to take our children away from this electronic age and return to basics - it was a hit even with them. Played board games and cards, did arts and crafts ! Great fun all round !
24/08/2015Julie
Great accommodation, very helpful hosts and fabulous location. Would have liked less rain to make use of fabulous fire pit. Warm, clean and very comfortable beds. Great shower and bathroom. Interesting loo! Superb to have our own private camping area. Brilliant. Local food provisions were there when we arrived. Almost convinced the family they love camping again! Great location for exploring the lakes. Thanks to Tabitha for all her help before and during our stay - super host!
27/07/2015Phil
We had a lovely weekend at Carrock, and even the unpredictable weather didn't spoil it! The Shepherd's Hut itself was beautiful and very thoughtfully fitted out. Tabitha was helpful and friendly, and the basket of fresh breakfast goodies was a lovely touch.
24/07/2015Vanessa
short break, lovely peaceful time away with our boys. first time glamping
20/07/2015marie
Overall, this was a lovely stay and we only really had one issue. The 'rooms' were all very clean and the little kitchen had all that we needed. We were given a little box of provisions (eggs, milk, bread and bacon) when we arrived and the fires had all been laid for us. The clearing is quite small and is almost surrounded by trees (so no view), but the good aspect of this was that we were very sheltered from the wind.
17/07/2015Sarah
What a fantastic place to go! I went with two friends for a short break to get away from the hussle and bustle of daily life. It sure did help us to relax with a fab greeting and introduction from the host, a beautiful setting in a secluded area, great utilities taking us all back to basics yet not to the cave man era and a short drive away from all the Lake District has to offer. I can't wait to plan my next stay with Canopy and Stars! :)
06/07/2015Georgina
Very happy with are stay. Area was outstanding and could of not been better
19/06/2015Mark
We had a lovely stay! Great hospitality and the place was very clean and tidy. We loved how private it was and it was also very peaceful.
11/05/2015Rebecca
It was excellent!! the hosts were very friendly and helpful. The accommodation was lush and a cracking location. Will certainly be recommending to friends.
06/04/2015lynne
Our stay at Carrock was wonderful. We loved living back to basics and immersed in nature but with just enough comfort to make the experience special and relaxing. Loved the cosy shepherds hut that heated up quickly with its very comfortable bed. Also liked the separate cabins for the loo and kitchen and was so pleased there was proper gas heated hot water so despite the howling wind and rain we could sink into a hot bath. Beautiful surroundings, bracing walks in the hills and a very warm welcome from Tab, the owner. Will definitely come back.
30/03/2015Hannah
"Stayed for four nights, loved the bath candles and wood burning stove. Cooked every night and the stove in the kitchen hut and snuggled up in the shepherds hut again with the wood burning stove. Very relaxing and peaceful. Sheep came to just us on the morning. Can't wait to go back when the nights are a little lighter"

"It was great to be living life so simply - no tv, no internet, no phone pick up! I loved being able to get up in the morning and be there straight in the great outdoors!! Although the bed in the shepherd's hut was too small for us (me being just under 6ft and my hubbie being over 6ft) so we didn't get a good night's sleep; we absolutely loved it! I love the simplicity of the way of life and as always I loved the pace of life there; I would happily move up tomorrow. From the kitchen we heard owls, foxes, saw bats and deer - it was just utter bliss :)"

"It was lovely, the set up had everything we needed, and in style! Loved the stoves, and very warm even in October. I had a cold at the time and we were so comfortable it really didn't make a difference I wasnt at home!"

"Tabitha really went out of her way to be helpful. You feel more like a friend staying than a paying guest. The whole place is so well designed - you fee private in your own little camp clearing in the woods even though there are other people around, The fire pit is always a huge hit with our family, but having a proper kitchen too means that if it rains you can still cook in comfort."
25/07/2014Alison
"We had a lovely time and would definitely recommend it to other families. The best thing was to spend time as a family without distractions of the outside world. The kids loved the place and had a great time outside. The worst thing was....actually can't think of anything bad."

"It was the perfect way to spend our two year anniversary, we had really good weather, the hosts' were fab and the campsite was more than we expected. Honestly no worst thing at all, it was our first time booking a place off Canopy & Stars & our first time staying in somewhere outdoors like that so we didn't even know what to expect but we enjoyed every minute to cooking local beef burgers on an open camp fire to sleeping in the shepherds hut hearing all the animals/rain outside."

"We had a wonderful time. The shepherd's hut was delightful, spotlessly clean and cosy. The set up with a kitchen, bathroom (with bath!) and compost loo was great. The loo didn't smell at all! It helped that we had great weather. The location is fabulous, a quiet corner of the Lake District, no road noise at all, all we heard at night were the owls!"
24/05/2013Shirley
I thought it was wonderful the shepherds huts were wonderfully cosy, the kitchen cabins very homely. The bathrooms were very cosy too with the wood burning stoves and copious amounts of hot water. The shepherds huts which were very romantic. The worst thing was the weather, but all the home comfort offered provided for an outdoor experience without the usual unpleasant sogginess."

"We had a lovely time, a lovely little breakfast hamper presented to us by Tabitha on our arrival was a lovely touch, both huts were beautifully clean, well equipped and homely and the lovely little stoves made us hope for chilly evenings, not out of the question in a Lakeland summer! Even the weather surprised us, despite the gloomy forecast before we left, TWO days of glorious sunshine. The Lake District plays by its own rules and this time that suited us fine! We'll be back! Gill, Mark Nicholas and Jessie the dog"

We’ve stayed here before when the kids were young and loved it. This time 3 teenagers with patchy internet connection would be a challenge! But they loved it! We read books, played cards, chatted and laughed a lot. The teenagers took responsibility for dinner and cooked over the open fire outside - it was amazing. Carrock is just a wonderful place - peace and quiet with touches of life’s essentials like a great shower. I loved the bread, eggs and milk provided (I forgot the milk). Carrock is located close to Ullswater, Keswick and the Aira Force waterfalls. But we spent most of our time spending time just relaxing in this beautiful place

We had a lovely peaceful stay in the Lakes. The location was great for exploring the lakes and nice and private away from the hustle and bustle. We had everything we needed and had a lovely family trip.

We really enjoyed Carrock. A peaceful location and fabulous accommodation. The shepherd's hut was cosy and the kitchen area had everything we could need. The kids loved the warm bath. The fact that soaps, towels, bedding, milk and bread were provided were a real bonus.

We loved the set up, one of those rare places where thought and attention to detail are apparent everywhere. Felt right at home from the off and it was the perfect place for a family of 4 to spend some time together away from the distractions of the outside world (no mobile phone signal or WiFi = bliss and board games). We shall return.

This was our second stay at Scales Plantation and couldn't ask for more. It was an ideal location so peaceful and quiet yet not far from Penrith etc.

The stay was amazing, great homely touches like the bacon and eggs and the tea and biscuits. Great location and facilities. Felt like you were away from everything.

Great stay with the kids, we loved cooking over the campfire and relaxing outside after a long day of walking. Peaceful and really dark at night for stargazing.

Me and my husband found the place very relaxing and it was lovely touch from the host to leave a few food essentials. The whole experience was amazing.

It was fantastic. Super cosy and fun place to stay. Lots of private outdoor space.

We had a great stay even though the weather wasn't great. The log burner kept the kitchen nice and warm and we had everything we needed. The area surrounding the hut has plenty of things to do and some lively walks. Great views over to Blencathra and lovely to be in your own clearing in the woods.

We had a lovely long family weekend away. No computers, no phones just good old books and games and visits into Keswick.

This was a 5* weekend break! We enjoyed every second and didn't want to leave!!!

We had a lovely weekend at Carrock, and even the unpredictable weather didn't spoil it! The Shepherd's Hut itself was beautiful and very thoughtfully fitted out. Tabitha was helpful and friendly, and the basket of fresh breakfast goodies was a lovely touch.

short break, lovely peaceful time away with our boys. first time glamping
