Overview
It’s always lovely to visit the Lake District, but it might just be even more lovely to take a bath in the middle of it. Down a gravel track from the farmhouse at this cosy space, you’ll see soak under the trees, watching the light change on the peaks and a few distant rooftops, with the sounds of sheep and cows drifting over as you bathe. From this remote spot, you can hike an almost endless selection of trails, spotting wildlife from badgers to buzzards. There are warming climbs and stunning views up Blencathra and Skiddaw to the north or Helvellyn to the south, and more gentle strolls down the old railway line into Threlkeld and Keswick, a mile or so away. In this lovely village you’ll find The Horse and Farrier, where you can enjoy local ales, spirits from the nearby distillery and hearty meals of locally-sourced pub classics, although Luke, the owner of The Stag, strongly recommends making the 15-minute drive to Grasmere and checking out the family-owned, cow-themed restaurant The Jumble Room.
As well as being a great source of local knowledge, Luke is also the creator of the space you’re staying in and the other cabins that share the field, but are positioned for privacy. The Stag is constructed to his own design using almost entirely local materials. Most of the wood comes from a sustainable sawmill a mile away, the slate from Honister and there’s a douglas fir tree stump from up the valley holding up the bathroom sink. Even the coffee was locally roasted and the vintage tractor seats at the breakfast bar haven’t travelled far. You’ll find the king-sized bed wonderfully comfortable, the hobbit stove in the corner backed up by underfloor heating, the kitchen equipped with kettle, toaster and gas hobs and the en suite bathroom all modern and excellently finished. Outside, the wood-fired bath makes a perfect spot for lying back and looking at the hills you’ve been walking through or, with the light pollution so minimal, the glorious night skies.
Please note The Stag has moved approx. 40m in the same field, and the positioning is slightly different to the images shown.
Experience the joy of e-biking this summer! From 15th July - 16th September, Birkett Mire will be offering two e-bikes for hire and is also part of our Green Travel collection. With around 3-4 hours of battery life, explore the stunning scenery right from your doorstep. Please speak to the owners for more info and how to book. Rental is £35 per day, per bike, plus insurance. If you're not already covered, you can find specialist e-bike insurance via our partners, Laka.

Meet your hosts
Meet Luke, Wendy, Ellie and Jack
The Birkett family has farmed on these hills for generations. Eldest son Luke is the craftsman who has handmade each of the luxury hideaways. Daughter Ellie is the baker responsible for fresh farmhouse treats you will find inside your accommodation on arrival. The youngest son Jack is on hand to make sure there’s plenty of wood for the log burning stove and the hot tub. Finally, you will see the loving crafted finishing touches throughout the cabins, put in place by Mum Wendy.
The Birkett’s are traditional Lake District sheep farmers and their flock of 350 fell sheep spend most of the year roaming free on the side of Clough Head. When they come home to lamb - from March to May – you might see their Swaledale ewes and lambs close by. Their friendly herd of Belted Galloway cattle slowly roam around the fields beside the farmhouse, setting the pace of life for visitors. These girls, gentle in nature and clearly marked with a wide white band around their middle, enjoy the lush green pastures of Birkett Mire.
Wildlife & the environment
Birkett Mire is located in the heart of the Lake District National Park which has recently become a World Heritage Site. Throughout the grounds of Birkett Mire guests can expect to see foxes, red squirrels, hares, badgers, owls, buzzards, kestrels, salmon, trout and the occasional osprey.

We had an amazing stay at The Stag. From the welcome bottle of Prosecco to the amazing wood burning hot tub. The views from The stag and the tub were beautiful and constantly changing. The privacy and peace made it a relaxing the stay. The Stag was set up to a vey high standard and felt luxurious. The hosts were amazing always on hand to answer any questions and help in any way. The location was great for being able to take many walks direct from the accommodation including into the town of Keswick and the local village Threlkeld cafe.

We had a brilliant time at The Stag, great location with gorgeous views and complete luxury. Loved the cabin and the massive outdoor bath and so many lovely touches to make it feel special including the robes, prosecco, coffee and cookies down to the unlimited wood and very friendly hosts. Despite not being too far from the other cabins it felt very private and like we had our own space. The cabin was beautifully made but also large enough for a rainy day and had everything we needed with the kitchen, bathroom and giant and comfy bed.

Our stay was amazing in every way. Beautiful accommodation in the most stunning location looking out at Blencathra in the Lake District. Our host met us with a friendly greeting on our day of arrival and gave us some really useful information on where to walk and places we could eat. We were then left to enjoy our stay knowing we had privacy but our friendly hosts were on hand if we needed anything. We didn't end up eating out other than fish and chips in Keswick as we decided to stay in and soak up the beauty of the place instead.

We were totally blown away by The Stag, the location is beautiful and the accomodation is gorgeous with every little detail considered from the wonderful toiletries to the thoughtful welcome drink/cookies and tea and coffee. We had a wonderful time at The Stag! It’s a little bit of luxury in the Lakes. Amazing location with incredible views. Gorgeous shepherds hut with some many lovely touches. We had a couple of rainy days but staying cosy by the fire, drinking hot chocolate was heaven. The hot tub looked amazing but the rain had other ideas for us!

Had a wonderful, relaxing couple of nights at The Stag to celebrate my husband’s 50th birthday. Beautiful, comfortable, cosy hut with the most fantastic views, lovely luxury touches with bathrobes, Prosecco, homemade cookies, fresh coffee, tea and flowers. All logs for the log burner, hot tub and fire pit included. Made some new friends ( the cows ) who always came to see us when we went in the hot tub! Lovely, friendly welcome at check in. Thank you for the surprise birthday balloons. We’ll hopefully be back soon!

Our stay at the stag was wonderful. It's a beautiful hut, seculded but still close to both the farmhouse and easily walkable to town (4 mile but flat). The welcome we had from the birkett family was great and the welcome drink and cookies a lovely touch! I would recommend the stag to anyone looking for a relaxed break!
25/07/2022Jessica

Incredible location with outstanding views. The walk to Keswick along the old railway line is worth it. The accommodation is second to none. Beautifully handcrafted, top specification and and outside wood fired bath, a must! Very warm welcome, they couldn’t do enough for us. As a couple who work in the hospitality and entertainment and arts industry, we were very impressed with the thought and detail that has gone into building the Stag. Very impressed.
27/04/2022Nige
The Stag was a beautifully finished Sheppards hut with every detail high quality and thoughtful. The setting was outstanding, private, amazing views and tranquil and close to lots of stunning walks and lakes. The hosts were very welcoming and went above and beyond with restaurant recommendations and welcome gifts for a special occasion.

Wonderful place, and lovely hosts. The accommodation was exquisite, super quiet and withdrawn. Clean, well equipped, cosy, and peaceful. Would definitely stay here again. The wood fired tub was excellent too and surprisingly hot! Pro tip; ask for help getting the fire started and save yourself some frustration.
25/02/2022Oliver
We had an excellent stay at the Stag. The hosts were very welcoming and made the stay even more special with complimentary prosecco, chocolates and they put up birthday balloons for my partners birthday! It was lovely and clean and had everything you needed for a comfortable stay. The surroundings are beautiful and we couldnt have asked for more.
08/12/2021Chloe
Really enjoyed our couple of nights despite rainy weather that turned into a storm. Cute and well presented cabin with cosy couch to curl up on while munching the yummy welcome biscuits. We had fun building the fire in little stove. Nearby pub very nice (needs booking) and we cooked the second night as didn't want to leave, kitchen has a couple of hobs. In an amazing part of the world near some beautiful walks/drives, aira falls nearby was busy but a nice excursion.
25/10/2021Fiona
It was great! The owners were very helpful and the set up some great surprises for us as we got married during our stay!
18/10/2021Helen
Warm welcome from Wendy on to this working farSpotlessly clean, surrounded by the beautiful countryside and wildlife of the Lake District. Everything we needed and very comfortable bed. Using the outdoor bath was great fun, a test of patience and I'm sure very puzzling for the watching sheep.
20/09/2021Julie
We had a wonderful stay at The Stag! Very luxurious and relaxing, owners had thought of everything.
01/09/2021Deb
What a stay! The location is stunning the details of the place are tiny and beautiful. The owners couldn’t be more helpful and friendly! The stag is a stunning cabin with all the mod cons and homeliness you could imagine. Spotlessly clean, looking like new with plenty of essentials like toaster, hob and decent knives. It appears the grass was cut the day we arrived and enough wood to heat the tub daily with plenty to spare. The view from the cabin was outstanding and with a pub not far away we settled with one meal out and warm nibbles of an evening! We walked from the hut through lovely valley path up Hall’s Fell, down Blease fell and back home with a stop at the community cafe across the main road! We used it as a base also to take the motorbike over Hardknott Pass. It’s so nicely situated that you don’t need to drag yourself through busy roads in the heart of the lakes but still can explore everything if you have transport. A huge shout out to the Birkett team for this get away. I mentioned to them that it was expensive (definitely for us) but I have no regrets for spending it to stay there! Thank you so much for a wonderful weekend!
27/08/2021Alex
Staying at The Stag was beautiful! The surroundings were amazing, the hut extremely comfortable, clean and well equipped. It all felt very special!
06/08/2021Hannah
An amazing Shepherds Hut with amazing views , we had a relaxing few days in our own field, the wood fired outdoor bath was a relaxing experience, simply laying in the bath with steamy water with a perfect view of the hills listening to birds singing was perfect, have already recommended the stag to family and friends, will be back soon , luxury ,relaxation and much more
25/06/2021Andrew
I took my husband on a surprise weekend away and he loves being in the countryside in the middle of nowhere and The Stag was exactly that. Although it was on a farm, you walked through a field to get to the hut and it really felt like you were in the middle of nowhere. The views were amazing and the hut was super clean, kitted out and beautifully designed. The host was helpful but gave us our privacy. The location is great as it's a walk from the local village and a great Mountain to climb - Blencathra. We had the most amazing, relaxing weekend and would definitely recommend The Stag to anyone who wants to get away from it all.
04/06/2021Hanna
We had a wonderful stay at The Stag on our honeymoon. The hut was beautifully decorated and was lovely and comfortable with stunning surrounding scenery. The hosts were really friendly and provided us with tea, coffee, milk and amazing cookies when we arrived. We told them that it was our honeymoon so when we returned from our day trip, they had put up a 'just married' banner and balloon which was a lovely surprise. On a day when we had booked a late evening meal, the owner gave us freshly baked brownies to keep us going till tea time. We really loved our stay and would certainly stay again.
31/05/2021Lorna
We loved it thank you. The outside area felt nice and isolated and not overlooked but was close enough to the main roads that it was easy to find and get to where we needed to be. The hut itself has a really luxury finish, very comfortable bed, bathrobes and lots of finishing touches like homemade cookies and prosecco. It was very special
12/05/2021Sophie
The tag was ACE! Everything about it was really really good! We used all the potentials it offer - from the kitchen (cooked meals and breakfasts) to the outdoor fire pit with BBQ and also the hot tub although this requires a long wood burning time! We loved it!
10/05/2021Andrea
Amazing remote location, luke couldn't do enough for us, definitely highly recommend
07/05/2021Claire
From the moment we arrived we were in love! Beautiful views, beautiful cabin! The hosts were fantastic, before hand I contacted them to tell them it was a getaway for my boyfriends 30th birthday, they left balloons and a banner up and a bottle of Prosecco out for us to celebrate! The place itself is stunning and the hut is so spacious and the comforts like the huge sofa are lovely after a long walk, like home from home! The bathroom is gorgeous and the way the windows serve as picture frames for the backdrop of the mountains is so cleverly done! The hot tub outside is lovely and when the weather starts to go dark very romantic! Would certainly be coming back.

We absolutely loved our stay at The Stag. The hosts were incredibly helpful, kind and hospitable. It felt like the whole cabin and amenities had been built and made just for us. Everything was super clean, fresh and there were extra details from the host that made it the most wonderful stay. I could not praise this enough and it was easily one of the most memorable getaways we’ve had. It didn’t matter that the weather was bad or we were terrible at getting a fire going. We were well looked after and as comfortable as could be!

Absolutely fantastic break away for my fiance's birthday. Beautiful views, lovely accomodation and the host couldn't have been more helpful. I contacted them in advance of our stay to ask if they knew anywhere that could arrange an afternoon tea. They offered to provide one and it was beautiful with all local produce. It really helped get our break off to a good start. The outside bath was a lovely experience, very romantic!

We returned to The Stag for a couple of nights to experience being somewhere other than home! Yet again we had a marvellous stay, made even better by the sunny, blue skies (our previous trip in October was wet and windy) so this time we could sit outside and enjoy the occasional sound of a sheep, whilst watching the lambs playing in the adjacent fields.
14/04/2021Sarah
Our stay was absolutely perfect. After a long time at home (lockdown) it was just amazing to get out into nature. The hut was spotless, unique and modern! The hot tub was lovely, we enjoyed having to light the firewood to heat it up!! There are plenty of local walks you can do from the hut including the walk from Threlkeld to Keswick and to Castlerigg Stone Circle. We would recommend this place to anybody and in the future we will come again.

Absolutely beautiful space in the lake district, we have been here twice now and have another stay booked next year for our anniversary. It is spotless with amazing views over Blencathra and the surrounding hills. Walking down the gravel path from the car feels like you're leaving everything behind and you can see the beautiful glow of the Fairy lights and it feels so cosy. We had some awful weather this time round but the sound of the rain on the roof was so calming and the hut was really warm with a huge comfortable bed. We managed to get the bath up to temperature despite the wild rain and cold and we sat in there for hours 2 out of 3 nights listening to the wind and rain and stargazing when it finally cleared up. The owners were happy to help us getting the bath set up the first time as the weather was pretty wild and we were struggling! They also left us complementary milk, tea, coffee, mince pies and prosecco with some Fudge! We had another amazing stay, truly luxurious and one of the best places we have stayed. Thanks again!

The most idyllic place we have ever stayed in and we are well travelled! Loved the hot tub and the 360 views you get of the mountains even on a gloomy wet day. The placed was equipped with everything we needed. The bed, WOW, just WOW! Everything about the build, design and interior was perfect. We loved the little touches with the rustic. Popped our complimentary bubbly in the hot tub on my partners birthday. We will 1000% be returning. Thank you! :)

Brilliant views and a lovely cabin!
02/12/2020Paige
We agree with all previous reviews on here - this place was wonderful and had everything you needed for a secluded break in the lakes. We struggled to get the hot tub going but Jack was more than helpful to get it going for us. Unfortunately the weather just wasn’t on our side so didn’t get chance to use it! We want to return next year in the warmer weather to make use of the bbq and get the hot tub going!
02/11/2020Stacey
We had a wonderful stay at The Stag! The weather wasn't on our side but the cabin made for a cosy hideout from the rain. It was very thoughtfully decorated and everything was to a very high standard. The views were spectacular even through the clouds! We loved the idea of an outside bath but the elements were against us and we couldn't get it warm enough despite trying for over three hours. We had a throughly relaxing time and would definitely recommend!
26/10/2020Beth
What an amazing place. We had clear directions for how to get there which meant our trip there was easy to achieve. The shepherd's hut is on its own in the corner of a field and looks and is gorgeous. The work that has gone into this place is evident, it is beautifully finished with a high spec. From the steps up to the front door with their small plants placed there, outside lighting by the hot tub, bathroom fittings of local wood and stone, tractor seats on the bar stools, massive and very comfortable bed; it's all designed to make your stay very enjoyable and an easy place to relax. We loved the Prosecco left for us to drink and had this in the hot tub! The dark skies where we hoped to see a skyful of stars didn't happen because it was too cloudy/raining. The setting is wonderful - parking just for you and a footpath to the site, sheep in the adjacent field, views of field and mountains. It's a fabulous, relaxing place to stay.
21/10/2020Sarah
We had a fantastic stay at The Stag and would happily recommend it to anyone. The room was clean and comfortable and the location was perfect, just a short drive from Keswick and with access to the surrounding lakes and peaks.
09/10/2020Callum
My husband and I booked this holiday as it was our first one in 9 months (and we were celebrating our first wedding anniversary) and WOW! The Stag was just what we needed. It was easy to navigate to the hut which was clean and a joy to step into. Every detail had been thought through and we loved sitting on the sofa watching the changing scenery of the clouds going past the hill tops! The owners were wonderful in staying in touch and really making us feel at home! We loved the outside hot tub and used it one evening to sit outside under the stars! My husband and I are already planning our next visit as it was such an amazing place to be!
02/10/2020Letty
We had an amazing stay, the location was amazing, views out to blencathra, short drive from Keswick and we did Helvellyn from Swirls car park which was 5-10mins away. The place itself was really nice, brand new, with everything you need (except a corkscrew) there was plenty of logs for the log burner and for the hot tub, this takes a while to heat up but to be expected with all log burning hot tubs (around 2.5/3hrs). Luke went above and beyond to help us bringing more kindling and even started the hot tub for us knowing our aching legs would need it after a hike up Helvellyn! Couldn’t fault the place, but the only thing I would recommend Is a lid and a paddle to stir the water in the hot tub to speed up the process. Unreal stay, have already recommended it to friends and family
28/09/2020Jonny
It was just what we needed. The lodge itself was so clean and just perfect, you can see every detail has had love and thought put into. The outside hot tub and firepit/ grill made for some relaxed and perfect evenings. The views from waking up I will miss so much just looking at the clouds going past the mountain/hill tops. The most relaxed I've been in years and it's thanks to this place. The family is honestly just so friendly and lovely too, being it our honeymoon they went the extra mile...I'll honestly never forget staying here and hope to back in the future.

A perfect break. Very comfortable and luxurious accommodation. The owners could not have been more helpful. Top quality everything in the Stag. Beautiful location, short walk to Threlkeld and an enjoyable 4 miles to Keswick along the old railway line

Wow. We were totally blown away by The Stag, the location is beautiful and the accomodation is gorgeous with every little detail considered from the wonderful toiletries to the thoughtful welcome drink/cookies and tea and coffee. I couldn't have asked for me. We loved watching the lambs playing in the field and found the location perfect for walks and day trips. thank you we will be back again :)

Heavenly! Just the most beautiful, comfy and luxurious place to stay. It was secluded and peaceful but we knew if we needed anything the hosts were immediately contactable. Such a lovely, friendly welcome from Luke and his family, it was perfect.

We had the most amazing time at the Stag, the most gorgeous shepherds hut in a secluded spot in beautiful countryside and the hosts were lovely and had left everything we could need.

Staying at The Stag was beautiful! The surroundings were amazing, the hut extremely comfortable, clean and well equipped. It all felt very special!

The tag was ACE! Everything about it was really really good! We used all the potentials it offer - from the kitchen (cooked meals and breakfasts) to the outdoor fire pit with BBQ and also the hot tub although this requires a long wood burning time! We loved it!
