Overview
Behind the grass-cloaked roof and round hobbit door, a quirky space awaits. The wooden yurt looks delightfully homemade and appears to have grown up from the land – the labour of love was created using only reclaimed or recycled materials, like elm floors and an oak dining table that seats six. After long yomps on the moors, fold into a big pile of cushions and dry your socks in front of the toasty Rayburn as your pasties warm inside. Up to six can sleep on the bed and fold-out futons; bring a thick duvet for snuggling up together. After dark, stoke the firepit and sizzle sausages on the barbecue as you dine by the light of the candles and stars. Leave your devices in the car and enjoy a digital detox – this is the perfect place to finish a book (or start writing your own). The compost loo is yours, but you might meet other sociable souls down at the bath cabins, where the hot water is wood-fired and the baths are deep for leisurely lounging. It's a rambling, laid back site, with a true festival vibe!
A freezer box will come in handy for keeping things cold, and bring wellies too for country stomps – towels for soggy paws will help if you’re bringing four-legged friends. Head further afield to wild Bodmin Moor – you can ride bikes there along the Camel Trail. Close by there’s a riverside path with a pub at each end, woods carpeted in bluebells and a watermill, all with views of the rolling hills. North Cornwall’s beaches are close: you’re seven miles from Rock and Polzeath, a little further from Padstow where you’ll find Rick Stein’s seafood empire. Back at the camp you’re welcome to join in on Lisa and Neil’s approach to clean, pure living: feeding the pigs, playing with the dogs, asking about their commitments to sustainability – they’re always happy to share.

Meet Lisa & Neil
Lisa and Neil started Mill Valley about ten years ago, as they felt that there was a shortage of old fashioned campsites where you can have genuine freedom. Where you can light fires, collect firewood and generally unwind. Get back to nature and appreciate life's simple things without the trappings of modern technology. Most of all, they wanted to provide a holiday experience where dogs don’t have to be left behind! Lisa and Neil live in a converted water mill, which is the last working undershot water wheel in Cornwall.
Wildlife & Environment
Mill Valley is situated on a 15-acre organic smallholding in an exceptionally beautiful Cornish wooded valley. Lisa and Neil have a small herd of Dexter and North Devon cattle, as well as a few sheep, some Boer goats and old-breed pigs. Part of the farm is a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its wetland habitat. Only a short distance are two stunning woodland riverside walks and in the spring they are carpeted with bluebells. There is a weir and a natural swimming pool a short walk away – perfect for dogs who like a dip! A mother otter has also been spotted here, teaching her young to fish! Kingfishers are quite regularly seen on the river and sightings of roe deer are nearly an everyday occurrence. Tawny owls are heard most nights and even the occasional magical glimpse of a barn owl.
Mill Valley is off-grid and everything is wood-fired, with a couple of solar lights for lighting at night. Water comes from Lisa and Neil's own borehole. They have planted over 800 trees of over 30 different varieties, and are passionate about tree-planting and the environment.

Just had a lovely time at the Cornish Hobbit! We spent a few days with our dogs, and it was just the perfect place!

The Cornish Hobbit was a great place to stay with kids running free and to experience the simple pleasures in life. Reading books, jigsaw puzzles, exploring the Cornish Countryside and cooking on open fires.

A beautiful, friendly and rustic place to stay. We loved it.

We had the most beautiful and relaxing stay here, the scenery is lovely and lots of brilliant walks so perfect for us and our dog!

The Cornish Hobbit House was exactly what I expected loved every minute of it, it was so quiet and peaceful and relaxing which is what was required. Off grid and back to basics.

Such a unique and quirky stay we absolutely loved it and will definitely be going back. Close enough to shops and activity’s but so so peaceful when your at mill valley. Would highly recommend especially if you have dogs as lots of space for them to be outdoors. Lisa and Neil were amazing hosts and super friendly. Thank you for a wonderful place and stay x

We had such a great time at Mill Valley Yurts that we've already booked another short stay in the summer! We all enjoyed the back to basics approach and being so near to all of the woodland walks and nature. Lisa and Neil were so friendly and really lovely hosts, too.

A perfect spot deep in the stunning Cornish countryside! The site is lovely, with each of the huts beautifully and uniquely constructed. The Cornish Hobbit was perfect for a family of four, we really enjoyed exploring the local river and walks, using the wood fired showers, toasting marshmallows over the fire pit and stargazing at night. The hosts were incredibly welcoming and friendly, and we really appreciated the eco-friendly ethos of the site. It’s also a great base from which to explore some amazing beaches, and we also packed in a visit to the Eden Project and some off road cycling at Lanhydrock. We were so sorry to leave and hope to book to come again in the future!

We had an absolutely wonderful stay in our hobbit hole at Mill Valley Yurts. Lisa and Neil are lovely and so accommodating, the site is awesome and really helps you connect back with nature and go off grid for a little while. There is pretty much no phone signal, heat comes from keeping the fire in the aga going, you have to go outside to the outdoor compost toilet and light a fire to have a hot shower but that’s what we loved about it! A proper eco-friendly site with character and lovely little personal touches.

Beautiful Cornish countryside!!

What a delightful stay in a beautifully secluded little pocket of rural Cornwall. We really enjoyed the slow life and relaxing into lighting up the fires for showers and cooking. The hobbit house was stunning, rustic, beautifully furnished and had everything we needed. We slept so well, being awoken by the birds and sunrise as it crept in through the round roof window into the very comfy bed. Our dog Bonnie also loved the stay, with plenty of room for her, people to wag at, and a gorgeous stroll down to the nearby river each morning where we all had a dip. Highly recommend this off grid stay for a truly restful break away from it all, we felt we’d been away so much longer than we actually had! Would love to return.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Cornish Hobbit. The 'hut' itself is quite big, more than enough space for two adults, and the site is nicely laid out. You do have to plan ahead a little - all hot water is wood fired. Bring a large water bottle if you don't want to be going back and forth to the tap! Lisa and Neil are very helpful too, and left some nice cookies for our arrival.
22/02/2020Roy
We had a brilliant time in the Cornish hobbit. It proved a great location to explore many of Cornwall’s beaches and also allowed for a quick detour to the Eden Project when the rain came down. Proper off grid experience and great to get the kids away from iPads and technology for a week

A pure slice of soul cleansing heaven! My partner and I brought our four children aged 3-13 and wow...what a place. From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel like members of the family. The whole site harbours an air of relaxation and you immediately stop, take a deep breath of pure Cornish air before indulging in a heady mix of "back to basics" fun and home comforts. The Hobbit Yurt was perfect for our family and the memory of them all waking up to the gentle sound of logs crackling in the Rayburn as I boiled the kettle will stay with me forever. I'm also now in serious trouble as I'm adamant that I want a wood fired shower at home and my partner is somewhat less keen! The site is an eclectic mix of converted accommodation and everyone we met was friendly and pleasant. Ideally situated for many of Cornwall's attractions and amenities, I would not hesitate to recommend the place to anyone and will definitely consider a return trip. Thank you for having us, my only regret is that we couldn't stay forever!

We're super excited to be adding Lisa and Neil's latest space. A wonderful addition to the collection. The feedback for Pixie Yurt and The Stumpy Hobbit should give you a good feel for what it will be like. Book a stay and be the first to write a review!

A beautiful stay in the Cornish Hobbit, the accommodation was lovely and was very much a back to nature experience. The hosts were fabulous and the neighbours friendly. I was made to feel very at home and welcome as a solo traveller with my dog also very much relaxed and enjoyed the experience of playing with the hosts dogs freely. I enjoyed the lack of strict site rules. The simple pleasure of a wood fired bath/shower and off grid site was great.
